Thanks to the comments we now know that; Joey could have attacked into Kaiser Sea Horse instead with Blue-Eyes [TURN 10]. This would force Kaiba during his turn to use monster reborn to bring back Kaiser Sea Horse, so that it could be sacrificed for Blue-Eyes. Kaiba then Crashes his Blue-Eyes into Joey's, then he attacks the defence position Hayabusa Knight with Blade Knight. Joey's turn and he draws Baby Dragon, he summons it into defence and Ends his turn. Finally back to Kaiba's turn he draws stop defence, he switches Baby Dragon to attack and then attacks with blade knight. Since Kaiba is dealing less than 2000 damage Joey cant use Nutrient Z and since joey only has 100 life points left then that means Kaiba Wins the duel even earlier.
Use grave robber on card of demise. He would have gotten time wizard earlier. Use time wizard, clear kaibas field(since IMT wasn’t set), reborn blue eyes and attack for game.
You also said that Equip Cards can't be Equipped to Gearfried the Iron Knight, which technically isn't correct; they can be equipped, they just immediately get destroyed afterward
Even if Joey wasn't gonna win this duel, him taking control of Blue Eyes even for a second and seeing a seething Kaiba have to witness that has always been a moment that stuck out to me for this series.
Especially since Kaiba proved how villainous he was by ripping up the Fourth Blue-Eyes card. All because he didn’t want to see Blue-Eyes used against him.
@@spv4711 Kaiba would lose to Dark Marik cause of (Viser Des, Holding Arms, Holding legs, Lava Golem). Also his "remove trap" (spell card) can deal with kaiba's crush card easily. While Dark Marik also had Legend Devil (a monster whose atk increase by 700 per turn).
Kaiba’s reaction to seeing Joey steal his Blue Eyes is absolutely priceless. You can see the pure anger and disgust seeing the pride of his deck be in the possession of someone he deems as a deadbeat. Meanwhile, Joey is taking great pleasure out of it and at the time, pulled one of the best troll moments of YGO.
I did something similar with my Tech Genius deck some days ago, he summoned his alternative BE and I trigger that TG card that allows to swap control of the monster and I took his BE, and he got booster Falcon, he ended turn there for my laughs, he didn't surrender tho, we played through the end even if I had advantage
@@sonicsucks20 When Kisara saw Kaiba gritting his teeth she must have been like "My darling Seto is in a jealous rage, it just shows how much he cares!"
The best thing about this duel is that even though Joey lost, he was extremely humble about it and even felt bad for Kaiba that he'll never truly would enjoy duel monsters for what is supposed to be for: Having fun. Compare Joey now than back when he first lost to Kaiba at Duelist Kingdom. Dude practically threw a tantrum when he lost but he is now so humble at the guy he dislikes more than anyone barring the villains like Marik.
Dude grew up. He found out he wasn't as big back then. After his lost to Kaiba back then, that's when he became more humble and started learning quicker after each game
@@williamr1088What's the point of winning if it doesn't bring you happiness? Winning for the sake of it is a silly mindset to me, because in my mind, if it doesn't serve a purpose to make you better off emotionally, it's stupid. Anything external matters only do much as you value it, to place it above your own happiness, to pointlessly continue in something that brings you now happiness or betterment if you don't have to, is to me, true stupidity.
I'm half surprised that after Joey took his Blue Eyes that Kaiba didn't tell a sniper he had nearby to ready his shot...He looked ready to literally kill Joey.
@@DragoSonicMile Kaiba knew everyone had an escape, that's why he wasn't worried, even if the blimp was out of commission the helicopter was still there.
[REDACTED: SEE PINNED COMMENT] As the comments say, if Joey would have attacked Kaiser Sea Horse instead of Blade Knight toward the end of the duel. Then next turn Kaiba would have been forced to use monster reborn to bring a monster back so that he could tribute it and Blade knight to summon his second blue-eyes. Then when he crashes his blue-eyes into joeys blue eyes, Kaibas field is now completely empty. And Joey would be able to attack for game next turn. You guys so smart, how did I miss that.
I think the points about Kaiser Sea Horse are right, and make it so Joey actually loses even earlier. Kaiba revives Kaiser Sea Horse, summons Blue Eyes, double KOs both Blue Eyes, and then has Blade Knight (1900) to take out Hayabusa Knight. Joey summons Baby Dragon in defense. Kaiba uses Stop Defense on Baby Dragon, Blade Knight attacks into Baby Dragon, and damage isn't high enough to activate Nutrient Z so Joey loses there without any options.
Even though Joey lost this duel, You got to give him credit for how far he pushed kaiba. He brought Kaiba down to 700 LP without access to his best monsters, Kaiba still had access to his best monsters, where as Joey only had access to his monsters that were under 1500 ATK. The fact that Joey was able to not only last as long as he did but also bring Kaiba down to 700 LP without something like Jinzo shows how great of a duelist Joey actually is.
The only reason Kaiba was that low was because he gave up his own points. He lost 1000 life points for crush card and 1000 for enemy controller. So technically joey only did 1300 points of dmg. Not saying Joey doesn't deserve credit. because he definitely has come a long way but its weird how people gas him to an unrealistic extent
Kaiba don't even lent Joey his rare card like he did to random duelist in battle city(to test his deck) because he don't wanna take a risk of losing against joey.
i forget, why did he not have jinzo, insect queen, or legendary fisherman at this point? i know he gave red eyes to yugi, but what about the cards he won in the tournament
There is one thing Joey could have done, if he had set Graverobber and his Nutrient Z earlier in the duel, waited till Kaiba activated Card of Demise, then, once his turn started, set Pot of greed before activating it; he could have activated Graverobber to steal Card of Demise and drawn 5 cards since Joey's hand would've been empty at that point in the duel. Then activated Jar of greed to draw 2, making Joey have 7 cards in his hand, we already know he would have had Monster Reborn, Hayabusa Knight, Baby dragon, and Time Wizard, so the other 3 cards could've helped him win or at least help him survive the next few turns. Hopefully I didn't miss anything.
If your expecting him to draw into a monster with 1500 or more attack like Guilford the lighting if you missed it crush card virus basically send all of his monsters with a original attack of 1500 or more attack to the gy and while crush card is in the gy those monsters with 1500 or more attack can't be special summon from your gy
@@brysonreese3664 Yes, he wouldnt be able to draw a "stronger" monster, but there is one card in his deck that couldve won him the duel, or at least get him closer to victory - if he is lucky: Devil Dice. He also has Magical Arm Shield in his deck, which couldve also been able to turn the duel around. So in my opinion those 3 extra cards couldve been the difference between him losing or winning against Kaiba. Of course we will never know for sure, but there was definitely a possibilty for Joey to win if he played optimally.
The problem is hindsight bias. There's no way Joey could have known that Card of Demise was coming up, and therefore had no reason to NOT play pot of greed as normal to try and dig for one of his remaining answers to the inevitable Blue-Eyes. Joey doesn't play much direct removal in the first place and leans on combat-tricks like the Dice cards to get an edge, and after crush card none of his monsters had enough base attack to overpower one Blue-Eyes without both of them in play. Let alone the two others he knows Kaiba's got waiting in the wings. Kaiba was correct, Joey was wasting his time with a duel he couldn't win after running into the first-turn Crush card.
@@Silyon487 I dont think your hindsight bias argument is valid in this case. He literally set Graverobber the turn before Kaiba used Card of Demise, and after Kaiba ended his turn Joey drew into Pot of Greed. Of course the duel wouldve played out differently from this point on since he wouldnt have been able to destroy Kaibas Blue Eyes with the graverobbed Enemy Controller, so it really just depends on what those 3 extra card wouldve been, which we will never know.
Joey: You said nobody could use your Blue-Eyes White dragon against you if you had every copy, but you were wrong, Koiba! Feel the power of my Brooklyn rage! Kaiba: *Intetnally screaming and cursing Joey with all his might*
You can see the difference between Kaiba and Marik when Joey faced them. Marik wanted to torture and play with Joey. Because of that, Joey almost pulled a win from right under Marik. Joey had a chance. Kaiba wanted to end it right then and there. He wasted no time eliminating almost all of Joey's options. Joey had no chance, but he managed to anger Kaiba by taking that Blue Eyes.
I mean kaiba isn’t as salty as everyone says when he began winning he basically wanted to start trolling Joey through out the duel he has a soft spot for Joey wheeler even the big five feared Joey even though they probably sucked at dueling
Joey is strongest when he's fighting for a purpose . Revenge against Seto is guaranteed to fail because his mind is on revenge. That's why he lost to Duke when he could've won.
I think the ONLY reason Joey lost against Marik is because he was being overly cautious. If he'd played Jinzo when he had the chance, he would have absolutely trashed Marik's trap-heavy deck, regardless of whether Marik was taking the duel seriously. It would have been HILARIOUS to see Joey come out ahead of Kaiba in his own tournament.
Yeah my vote is the 2nd duel. The first duel didn't have that many turns anyway. Turn #1 summon Cyber Dragon. Turn #2 summon Cyber Twin. Turn #3 Summon Cyber End. Only thing Jaden could have done differently is bring out Mariner instead of Mudball, reducing Zane's life points to 200 instead of 1600.
Baby Dragon always seemed like the card that represented Joey best, it's young and inexperienced but with time becomes stronger. I'd still love to see Joey face off with Kaiba with Red-Eyes and Joey putting what Red-Eyes' nature of being the potential for power come to fruition. Seeing Blue Eyes go up against different Red-Eyes forms or something. Could you imagine how much Kaiba would seethe if he had like a Meteor Dragon in his deck for some reason, Joey steals it and fuses his Red-Eyes with it to make Meteor Black Dragon to beat Blue Eyes?
@Aquarium Gravel Except that by the time any of those cards are available to Joey in the anime, Kaiba will probably have many more of Blue Eyes' fusions, synchros, and advanced forms, as well as cards like Melody, King of D., Return of the Dragon Lords, Maiden and Sage with Eyes of Blue, etc.
@@PurpleEyedMint I had to double check just to be sure. But no, Time Wizard is a light attribute monster. Edit: I looked it up out of curiosity, and in fact, the ONLY cards he has ever used that would have been legal targets for Crush Card are Claw Reacher and Skull Stalker, which are in his pre Duelist Kingdom deck, which was just 40 monsters.
Whats ironic about Kaiba is that he is one of the very few opponents Joey has faced (especially in span of battle city and virtual world) that plays fair. - The Rare Hunter who stole Red Eyes used counterfeits (or marked in the dub) - Esper Roba had someone spy on Joey's hand - Weevil hired someone to sneak a card in Joey's deck. - Odion tried to play fair but Marik blackmailed him into playing a fake Ra. - Johnston fixed all of Joey's luck cards so they would fall in his favour. - Marik used a shadow game to weaken Joey.
And Mai marked her cards with perfume. But Kaiba also plays anime card of demise and uses crush card virus without having dark monsters with less than 1000 attack.
@@ChhrrisH2496 Anime card of demise is obscenely broken. In the real world, it's effect was super nerfed and STIL saw competitive play. Crush card virus is fair but Kaiba activates it unrealisticaly.
I'll be honest, Jounochi/Joey was my favorite character, but I never wanted him to win massively important main antagonist duels. If he did, it would ruin his character. Think of it. Joey is the underdog, he's the everyman. He's the guy like you and me that's doing what is right, and always trying his best. He's the guy who did better against Marik than Yugi did, and Yugi beat him. Joey, a random nobody, had Marik *screaming* in fear and anger about how impossible it was to be pushed so far by a nobody. In the Japanese version, Marik throws up after his duel with Jounochi because he was at one moment so absolutely terrified of this underdog of a guy who made him a literal joke in front of everyone watching. Joey has Moral victories. He duels because it's the right thing to do. To many extents, even more than the Pharoah, Joey can be called a real hero. He doesn't get disheartened from losing, he always gets back up and he keeps going. When the chips are down I'll always bet on Joey. Even if he loses, he fought his best, and he holds zero regrets.
Finally. Someone else gets it. When it comes to the good guys in this series Joey has always been my top. I like villians and the other heroes. But if I had any one of the characters as my real friend. I'd choose Joey.
A similar thing happened in VRAINS, Revolver would have Defeated Lightning but he wasn't "Allowed" to because the whole point was being good was more important... And The Main hero needed the Biggest Win

Kaiba used the virus on Joey's first turn. Even if Jinzo was in Joey's opening hand there would be no way to get him on the field before Kaiba makes the virus play
Kaiba is a dick to Joey specially during this duel, yes, but Joey has the nerve to keep using battle warrior on his deck this far up on the story so he deserves to lose just for that (Also, had Joey somehow won Kaiba would've snapped and blown up the island instantly)
Let’s not forget that back in Duelist Kingdom (sub mostly), Joey was always seen by Kaiba as someone who never “earned” his wins, someone who always gets something handed to him on a silver platter. Joey wasn’t even supposed to enter the tourney since he didn’t “earn” his ranks.

At the end of the Duel Joey is basically treating his losses to Kaiba the same way Kaiba does when Yugi defeats him. Kaiba Always keeps wanting to continually duel Yugi until he wins, and Joey by telling Kaiba that it's never over until he beats Kaiba is giving Kaiba a taste of his own obsessive medicine.
This Duel exemplifies how much Joey and Kaiba directly mirror the themes of their ace monsters in their philosophies, Red-Eyes' potential and Blue-Eyes' power.
Another point for red eyes is that it is willing to claim help from friends just like Joey. Clear when you look at the number of fusions monsters and I can name two that use yugi’s cards
I love how salty Kaiba was about Joey using his own Blue Eyes against him. That’s the ultimate flex. XD Thank you for another awesome entry in this series, TGS Anime!

@@playerslayer1787 Even with that card Kaiba gave to Yugi (whichs cheating) still yugi practically lost and it was Mariks other half that interfered to save yugi from losing, so Marik is a good duelist and would win even if kaiba got 2 god cards. Kaibas overrated and lost to Alister.
There's one thing I don't see. During his duel with Espa Roba, Joey summons, then attacks with Thousand Dragon. So, either the writers forgot that, TD wasn't a fusion at that point in time but is now, or Joey misplayed.
They always contradict themselves. If you watch the duel where everyone goes each other in Battle City, Kaiba used Shrink on Gearfried. So anything can happen in the anime.
I thought Joey misplayed because, at first, Thousand Dragon was an Effect Monster like Dark Sage, that could only be special summoned if you got the coin toss right while controlling both Time Wizard and Baby Dragon, but if that were the case, it would've been destroyed by Crush Card, so I think by this point Thousand Dragon was a Fusion Monster. They do this all the time in the DM anime, I remember Big Shield Gardna was a Normal Monster in Battle City, but then an Effect Monster in the Yugi vs Atem duel.
It's made more complicated because in the dub, cards are often painted to match what they are in the actual card game, rather than what they are in the anime. Example: Flame Swordsman is frequently painted as purple, in spite of the fact that Joey plays it as a normal monster in the anime
I think what's rather the case is that Interdimensional Matter Transporter in the anime allows you to return your monster at any time rather than just at the end of the turn. After all, BEWD returned while Joey was still having his turn (though granted, it wouldn't be the first time in the anime the opponent just decides it's now their turn).
I think Joey's biggest misplay was destroying blade knight instead of Kaiser seahorse. It was the stronger monster, but Joey knows kaiba has two more blue eyes in his deck.
Came on here looking for this exact comment. If Kaizer Seahorse was destroyed, Kaiba would have been able to destroy Joeys blueeyes and Joey would have won
One thing you missed is that even if Crush Card was useless to Joey, taking it out of Kaiba’s grave would’ve allowed him to summon back the monsters locked in his graveyard with Monster Reborn. You even mention the secondary effect of the card in the beginning. Would he have won with this play? No, probably not, but it wouldve given him a few more options.
Crush card in battle city is different than duelist kingdom. You're still allowed to special summon any of your strong monsters from the gy after Crush card sent them there. It's not a global effect that prevents monsters with 1500 atk or higher from appearing on your field.
@@SKMedia252 while crush card virus locks him from summoning strong monsters out of the graveyard, once ccv is out of the graveyard, joey couldve use them via special summon for example by monster reborn and that by itself couldve given him more options like bring back jinzo,no more traps still doubt joey wouldve won,hes supposed to be a mirror of kaiba but whitouth the insane power,so my guess is,joey wouldve lasted more turns, probably even lowered kaiba LP even more, driving kaiba mad just as he did to marik, before loosing anyway...the only diference kaiba lost even more time and gets more pissed that someone he considers a joke pushed him so far and thats the point, make kaiba so angry it becomes pointless or irrelevant and realizes it just a game and loosing its not that bad
16:38 According to Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series, if I enter the Konami Code, I get unlimited cards which is useless because it’ll make it harder for me to draw the cards I need.
@@scottbecker4367 Nah. Considering a lot of players go for the minimum 40 for CONSISTENCY, you're more likely to brick with "unlimited cards". Whether it be combo/aggro decks that want to get their boards set up with multiple negates on the 1st turn, or Control Decks that slow down tempo to their pace but STILL want to push for game as soon as possible. That, and 60 cards in Main Deck (15 in Extra Deck, 15 in Side Deck) is the official maximum limit in the game. This was after an incident in a German regional tournament where a player and his friend brought a 2222 CARD DECK (and a 222-card Fusion Deck (Now called an Extra Deck due to other cards besides Fusion monsters)) stored in a very long case carried by the 2 of them that also had to be shuffled ever so often. Dude apparently meant to do it for the lulz, and dropped out after a few rounds and after a lot of laughter was accomplished.
One thing you missed was that Joey should have used Blue-Eyes to attack Kaiser Seahorse instead of Blade Knight. That way, if Kaiba wanted to summon his second Blue-Eyes, he would need to Monster Reborn something and then tribute it and Blade Knight. Regardless of if he crashed it into Joey's Blue-Eyes or not, he'd be wide open on Joey's next turn. If Blue-Eyes was still on the field, Joey could crash his into it, then attack directly with either Hayabusa Knight or Baby Dragon to win. Edit: I suddenly realized Kaiba could just Monster Reborn Kaiser Seahorse and then tribute it to summon Blue-Eyes, but then that means he couldn't bring it back after crashing it into Joey's. Then Blade Knight will attack and destroy Hayabusa Knight. On Joey's turn, he summons Baby Dragon in defense. On Kaiba's turn, he plays Stop Defense on Baby Dragon and attacks it with Blade Knight. Since it will only inflict 400 damage, he can't play Nutrient Z, so he'll lose.
That COULD work on paper, but he could've also have Blade Knight attack Hayabusa and put Joey in the same position, Just with blade knight being there instead of Kaiser Seahorse.
I'd like to give Joey the benefit of the doubt here. He has no real reason to know Kaiser Seahorse's effect as I can't recall it ever actually being used at this point.
Joey was so strong in this duel, he did amazing and its one of my favourite duels because its so back and forth even though kaiba ultimately has control the entire duel.
I can't believe it's technically a filler duel too. Yu-Gi-Oh had some really decent filler for what it was imo - since the structure is duels, you don't really need _strong_ strong reasons for filler to happen. Heck, I don't even hate the Virtual World arc, I just don't like its placement in the series. If it were a stand-alone saga after the Battle City finals or something, that would make a bit more sense.
Joey did awesome. The anime version of crush card virus was one of the strongest cards in the game especially for old school yugioh it was ridiculously over powered.
How would the game have changed if he would have attacked Kaiser Seahorse instead of Blade Knight ? There wouldn't have been the tributes needed unless Kaiba used his reborn early
Kaiba could’ve used Monster Reborn to bring back Kaiser Seahorse, tribute it for Blue-Eyes and crash it into Joey’s Blue-Eyes, and then possibly have Blade Knight destroy Hayabusa Knight. Then Joey would’ve summoned Baby Dragon in defense, Kaiba would’ve played Stop Defense on Baby Dragon (or Hayabusa Knight if he didn’t destroy it earlier) and have Blade Knight attack for game. Since Nutrient Z only works when you’re about to take at least 2k points of damage, Joey couldn’t use it since Blade Knight would’ve done 700 points of damage when attacking Baby Dragon or 900 when attacking Hayabusa Knight and Joey still had 100 LP.
Mai vs Marik would be a great addition to this ‘would ____ have won the duel?’ series! She was so close to winning had she not sacrificed her harpies for Ra! 🙌🏽
This one really pisses me off lol even more than the Joey and Marik one. She just had to attack with the harpies and its gg but she had to summon Ra, dumbest move ever.
Joey vs Marik was largely faithful to the manga, but for Mai vs Marik the anime pushed too far in making Marik look weaker for this duel. In the anime they were basically going blow for blow, but in the manga Marik was dominating basically the whole time. I forget what he had on the board at the end in the anime, but in the manga he had a monster immune to battle destruction, so even if Ra worked or she attacked with the Harpies it would come to nothing.

5:13 That's weird, because during Joey's duel vs Espa Roba, he also uses his Landstar + Graceful Die combo, but the effect did not expire at the end of his turn.
I gotta admit, seeing Joey use Monster Reborn to bring back Kaiba's Blue Eyes was nice! It doesn't take much to piss Kaiba off, and to see a "second-rate chump" steal his "most prized possession" was enough to make him see red. I loved it!
the reason Kaiba takes it so hard is because the Blue Eyes White Dragon is the reincarnation of his lover in his past life: Kisara. Imagine Seto Kaiba is sharing a dance with Kisara and suddenly someone like Joey or Pegasus cuts in and takes his girl.
It would be cool to go through the main characters decks in the anime and see if they would work irl or if theyd be terrible. Cause Joey's deck seems to be just god awful with all the luck based cards
In my my opinion if your taking Seto kaiba from all the movies and the show I'll say after of everyone in the entire series that his deck would actually work in irl
I think that is dependent on what we classify as "irl", as if we're talking about in a tournament setting, I don't think any of the main characters' decks would be viable, as for the most part they tend to lack consistency. Any deck can score a few wins here and there, so if we're just talking a friendly duel with your friend at the kitchen table, then sure they would probably do fine, but to get consistent wins in competitive dueling they'd need to be adjusted with, for example, more searchers to avoid bricks. Even dedicated Blue-Eyes decks have trouble with brick hands, and Kaiba's deck contains a lot more cards that doesn't synergize with Blue-Eyes at all, like the XYZ Dragon Cannon cards. This isn't an issue in the anime, as the characters tend to draw cards that synergize with each other, but this will land you in hot water more times than not if you're playing in real life.
Yugi's anime decks are just god awful. If you actually try to build them and test them against any deck that you could have built even as a casual player during the time when the Battle City arc was running, your own personal deck would probably destroy Yugi's main series deck almost every time. I remember I was trying to build a Dinosaur deck but there were almost no Dinosaur cards back then, so it was a Winged Beast and Dragon deck mostly, and Yugi's Battle City deck doesn't stand a chance. Its cards do not support each other, it has no main theme, and deck engines were almost nonexistent back then (short of a couple of monsters that could search others, but only a couple). Joey's deck at least has some Warrior synergy, Pegasus' has a bit of a control theme, and Kaiba's is the most playable. Marik's deck actually doesn't work well either, but Yugi's is by far the worst.
You know, it's actually quite accurate to say that Joey is a third rate duelist with a fourth rate deck. Ignoring the naval definitions of "third rate" and "fourth rate" for obvious contextual reasons, Joey's always been in that awkward spot of being a good duelist but not good enough to really challenge the main cast, making him third rate. But his deck is crap, because it's really just a random assortment of cards he threw together, making his deck fourth rate.
11:24 After Joey draws Pot of Greed he could have set it and activate Graverobber, instead of Enemy Controller Joey could have chosen Life Shaving Treasure to draw 5 cards then activate Pot of Greed to draw 2 more giving him 7, then he could have summoned Time Wizard to activate it's gamble effect, if he gets right he could have destroyed all Kaiba monsters and then activate Monster Reborn to special summon Kaiba Blue Eyes from the graveyard, attack directly and win the Duel.
reminder joey wins in the end. yugi muto's dream is to retire from playing duel monsters and create his own game but because of gx and 5d's we know this never happens and even in the far distant future duel monsters is still the most popular game so yugi fails and kaiba leaves the world of the living to go chase after the pharaoh, this makes joey automatically the best duelist in the world and that means he gets to enjoy a very successful career as a pro duelist. also he gets mai. we won joeybros WE WON
@@melancholicthinker9291 yeah I was about to point that out, DSoD takes place BEFORE Gx and all the retcons it made bothered me, but Kaiba DOES come back eventually lol, he's even mentioned in 5ds.
Great video. Love this series! This duel always frustrates me though, especially the English version, because after Joey’s loss to Marik Kaiba states that with Joey’s death he’ll acknowledge him as a true duelist. Then we go to this duel and have him trash talking and belittling him again and it completely ruins that moment of Kaiba finally giving Joey respect imo.
Cheers for this bro! I still suggest was Alexis about to defeat Jaden (Heart Of Ice Part II) as had she just played her facedown Stray Lambs, Flare Neos wouldn't have the strength to wipe her out.
As far as I'm concerned Joey is the _real_ best duelist in the world. Kaiba has an unsportsmanlike advantage with his vast wealth and while not owning Duel Monsters is able to use his influence to continue to make support for his special BEWD archetype that is exclusively his. Meanwhile Yugi has all sorts Millennium Item shenanigans which makes every duel he is involved with essentially cheating in some form. But Joey? An honest man with an honest deck with no ancient Egyptian fuckery.

I think Joey had a major misplay on his first turn. Not only has he seen Kaiba use the Crush card strategy against Yugi, but he also used it against Ishizu in the Battle city finals, and attempted it against Pegasus, so Joey should have seen that one coming, not attacked, and waited for Jinzo to destroy the crush card virus.
@@RenaldyCalixte If he had here a tiny bit of the cautiousness he had against Marik, he wouldn't attack. Kaiba with a Dark Fiend monster on the field and 2 Set cards is as obvious as your opponent playing a lone weak Light monster in attack while having cards in hand. If you don't know what's coming in this case, you've earned the 3rd rate duelist title big time.
@@roncerjani9063 The reason Joey was cautious against Marik is because Marik placed Mai's mind in the Shaodow Realm. Joey wants to play smart in order to save Mai. Joey is dueling Kaiba to prove to him dueling isn't always serious and that it can be a way to make new friends and that Kaiba needs friends. So Joey has no reason to play cautiously against Kaiba.
@@RenaldyCalixte That's one of the reasons but he also wanted to test how much he has grown as a duelist. And what he did there doesn't talk in his favor. Crush Card was played 3 times, 2 succeeded and 1 attempted (vs Pegasus) and all these times it completely warped the game around itself. Kaiba himself got straightout decked out by it. So, if you wanted to win and prove how much you've grown, you have to be ready for this much. If Joey is having difficulty with that, what if Kaiba had used Obelisk, Ultimate out CED? Sorry for the long rant, but I hope you see my point. Joey threw all of his growth as a duelist completely out of the window in this game.
I'd love to see one of Yuma vs Kaito (their 2nd duel, at the end of the first half of zexal) or of Reiji vs Yuya (also their 2nd duel, right before the synchro arc)
Kaiba could Reborn Kaiser Sea Horse, tribute for Blue-Eyes, crash his Blue-Eyes with Joey's, attack with Blade Knight into Hayabusa Knight and Joey would still be at a disadvantage.
@@jacobweatherford4696 Not really. He draws Baby Dragon and summons it on defense. Kaiba uses Stop Defense and attacks it for game. He can't use Nutrient Z because the damage is low.
The anime had this habit of making Joey look weaker than he actually was when he's dueling Kaiba or when kaiba's even present, and while it's much less present in this duel him falling for Crush card always seemed like one of those moments. Aside from that I really love this duel and especially Joey taking control of Blue eyes, I always wondered why he did'nt just take control of Blue eyes and then use monster reborn for one of his own high level monsters but your explenation cleared that up.
I think everyone is missing the point of this duel. Kaiba calls Joey a third-rate duelist, but in the duel, he treats him like a threat by destroying his strongest monsters. Destroying Joey's strongest monsters in his deck is a move you use on a duelest who you know can crush you. After watching Joey's duel with marik, he made him realize that Joey isn't a weak duelist you think he is. Joey is still embarrassed, Kaiba by first taking his blue eyes and managing to get Kaiba down to 700 LP with only weak monsters 😂😂😂. That sounds like the skills of a high-ranking duelist to me.
You do make a great point, and something I wish they'd pointed out to him at the end. It's definitely very telling Kaiba immediately went with the Crush Card Virus play to decimate his deck right out of the gate. And yet, even with Crush Card Virus, Joey got him down pretty low on life points AND turned his own Blue Eyes against him. That is not a feat done by "a third rate duelist with a fourth rate deck"
@santosic I honestly believe Joey can defeat Kaiba, and even kaiba knows it. Do you want to know what else is funny? If Joey would have manage to hold on a little longer and have his panther warrior strike marik directly and defeat marik and take his winged dragon of ra card from him, kaiba would have changed the line up from facing off against yugi and face Joey instead to get his Egyptian God card then go after yugi. Now that's sounds like something kaiba would do 🤣 🤣 🤣
This is one of my favorite duels. I like how Joey still has confidence through the whole duel and shows Kaiba that he has grown as a duelist since their first duel in Duelist Kingdom. He plays some sweet combos and has Kaiba sweating when he gets Blue Eyes. My kids love watching this duel. Thanks TGS Anime for doing this breakdowns of the duels! 🐐. Side note: I’m a Kaiba fan and when he roasted Joey saying he had no business being there, that was savage.
This isn't about this duel, but... One that always bothered me was the Strings duel. I'm looking at all the card advantage that Strings has with that setup, the massive hand size he's got going on there, and all I can think is. "Summon another monster. Play another spell to destroy Yugi's monsters. Attack directly with something else." It wouldn't make an especially interesting video for this series, because the answer is pretty decisively - yes, Strings could have easily beat Yugi way before he worked out how to deck Strings out. Still, the series always makes me think of it. I suppose a more interesting question might have been, could Yugi have won any other way, sooner in the duel? Though I don't think he really could have, even if he'd known Slifer's effect.
Joey might have lost. But he did get one small victory. Kaiba wakes up every night in a cold sweat remembering the time Joey touched a Blue-Eyes, and almost won.
I would've loved to see Joey take on Kaiba with his deck at full strength. But once Crush Card Virus took out all of Joeys powerful monsters, the duel lost its luster.
11:45 Graverobber to get Enemy Controller, use Enemy Controller to summon Blue-Eyes, normal summon Hayabusa Knight, attack Blade Knight with Blue-Eyes and go for game with Hayabusa Knight...
I would loved to see a Joey capable of use Crush Card and Blue Eyes to make almost the same move Pegasus used to defeat Kaiba . Rich boy's face in fear would be priceless
Even without the quick attack spell card I wouldn't have been surprised if the "fusion monsters can't attack the turn they are summoned" rule had an * that read "unless it's kiba using blue eyes ultimate dragon" and even then the rule was probably to make sure yugi couldn't just pull a new fusion out of his ads in his next duel with kiba
Remember when he kept crashing his monsters against Rabid Horseman in season 1? Did he somehow grow blind to the atk/def stats or something? Or forget defense mode existed?
Cards available for Kaiba: Crush Card Virus, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Cards of Demise... Cards available for Joey: Little Winguard, Swordsman of Landstar, Hayabusa Knight... ...yeah.
Fun fact: Twin Headed Thunder dragon’s TCG artwork is a recolor of a vanilla monster “Two-Mouth Dark Ruler”, and they never fixed it, so the anime actually made a proper Twin Headed Thunder Dragon model, but they left the card as it looks in the TCG
Of course Thousand Dragon isn’t really a fusion monster in the anime; more of an effect summon. It should be able to attack right away? Though it certainly wouldn’t break canon for Kaiba to carve out an inclusion that would specifically target Joey :P
I just realized that Kaiba took a game with set rules, comlletely changed them fpr his own benefot including the weird fusion rule just to spite Yugi...and it still didn't work but him changing the rules lasted forever. Sort of.
I don't see how any of that benefited Kaiba. He has the strongest tribute summon monsters in the game (first Blue-Eyes, then Obelisk) and his best monster is a fusion monster. He actually hampered himself with that rule. By making tribute summoning a thing he actually made the game more balanced. Same concept with direct attacks. Original rules were basically a stall fest when you were down until you drew a card to turn the tables, which isn't really fair to the one with advantage. So I think it was another valuable rule. And the host of the tournament has the right to make their own house rules. Pegasus did that with the "Field Power Bonus" thing.
@@kyuubinaruto17 okay, you're going to have to take that up with the writers, not me? Canonically kaiba did change the rules to benefit him, it just didn't work out how he planned is all
@@Aetium Blue Eyes and Obelisk are 3 and 4 thousand, enough to beat over almost any other high level monster, so adding tributes did nothing for him. Though I guess with his beatsticks direct attacks were a benefit. So it's a bit 50/50.
Interdimensional Matter transporter is a favorite card of mine, I love it And blade knight’s pose in this duel when it’s summoned I also liked, made it look really cool
The thing that comes to my mind on something he could have done differently would be to have Blue-eyes attack Kaiser Sea Horse instead of Blade Knight... While I don't think it would have changed the result. It would force Kaiba to use up his Monster reborn to summon Blue-eyes before the dragons clashed (reborn Kaiser and use it's effect), so neither of them are on the field afterwards.
I think that Kaiba and Joey would've had a much more even duel if Kaiba did not use the cheap crush card virus to crush all of Joey's powerful monsters! I mean the battle was already set on Kaiba's favor after Kaiba crushed Joey's ability to use any strong monsters against him, yet Kaiba had access to all of his powerful monsters!....; And the mere fact that Joey was still able to give Kaiba a pretty descent challenge in my opinion, even after having all of his powerful monsters rendered useless, shows that Joey is great duelist! Kaiba got lucky drawing monster reborn. If he had not he would've probably lost the duel. Joey used Kaiba's own blue eyes white dragon to attack him!...I mean that was simply awesome and a great play from Joey, and again, if Kaiba hadn't drawn monster reborn to bring back his blue eyes, Joey may have won the duel, and again, Joey had nothing but weak monsters, so if Joey had not had his deck crushed, he would've given Kaiba even more of a run for his money!...Kaiba only had 700 life points left when it was all said and done...losing with your opponent has less than 1000 life points left is a feat when your opponent is the Prestigious, Seto Kaiba! Joey did basically defeat Marik also...Joey has some skills. In any case, it was a great duel and it was a smart move for Kaiba to crush Joey's deck like that...it gave Kaiba the advantage against Joey and the fact that Kaiba had to do that in order to gain an advantage over someone he considers a 3rd rate duelist...I think Kaiba was nervous a few times throughout this duel because I believe that deep down inside, Kaiba realizes that Joey is a great duelist and is more of a formidable opponent than a so called 3rd rate duelist!.......What I would like to see is a rematch between the two with the crush card virus banned from the duel...simply power against power to see if Kaiba is indeed the more powerful duelist!
If Joey used Graverobber to take Crush Card Virus couldn't he then special summon the monsters it sent to the grave with Monster Reborn? That would give him access to his ace cards like Jonzo or Red-Eyes Darkness Dragon.
Problem with that is that Joey has no Dark monsters with less than 1000 Atk and Kaiba didnt play Saggi, which would have been the only viable target for it So no matter what, he wouldnt have been able to use the crush card
What's so funny is in the later series of Yu-Gi-Oh!, that quick attack spell card to let fusion monsters attack once they've been summoned, is NEVER seen ever again, even when the player who fuses monsters on the 2nd turn. So why would they even use it in the first place? Oh, that's right: for plot device. lol. I swear, this anime just does whatever it wants.
Well the thing is, Joey misplayed... Thousand Dragon isn't a Fusion monster in the Anime... In the Anime it's an effect monster, so it was allowed to attack that first turn.
Wouldn't have worked. The God Cards, at least during the Battle City arc, could only be used by the chosen duelists. Joey was not one of them. On top of that, Ra comes with an extra layer of security, which we saw with Mai. Kaiba, Marik and Yugi could see and read the text because of their connections to Egypt, which Joey lacked. He would have been in the same predicament as Mai.
@@DarthPyrusTheVirus been a few years since i saw the original series, but didn't joey have a connection to Egypt? I thought I remembered him, yugi's grandpa etc. as helpers for the pharaoh when there was the flashback when they fought bakura (totally messed up his name, the dude with the millennium ring)
Even if it wouldn't have accomplished much in this particular duel, I think it's worth mentioning that Joey actually could have "lifted" the affect of the CCV (Crush Card Virus). Since it only stop the bigger monsters from being summoned while it's in the GY, Joey could have Graverobber'd it, set it to his field, and just left it there, giving him access to all his stronger monsters again. As I said though, this wouldn't have really done too much to help him win, but it's cool to think about
@@kaire5638 Anime Graverobber literally just reads "Steal 1 card from your opponents Graveyard" and Anime Crush Card Virus has a line of text on it that reads "Negate this effect if this card is not in your GY" so Joey could have used graverobber so stop the part of the CCV that makes it so any of his strong monsters would be destroyed immediately upon being summoned back from the GY. I did my research on this
This is honestly one of my favorite duels for the dub dialogue no matter what anyone says. They both had some fun and harsh lines and it fits their relationship. one of my top 5 Kaiba lines that always stuck with me for how harsh it is to Joey is the epsiode cliffhanger on Part 1. yeah Kaiba's a jerk, but thats why we love him. "Now it's time for me to use my Dragon to finish you off, and expose you as the FAILURE you truly are! You have no business being here, and soon youll learn that the hard way!"
Kaiba would've had 500 LP left if Joey would've attacked Kaiser Seahorse with the stolen BEWD and then Kaiba would've not have special summoned BEWD to the field, so there's a misplay. Who knows? Maybe Kaiba would've inevitably activate the Interdimensional cannon to save himself from another of stolen BEWD's attack on the next turn. It's still predictable Joey would always inevitably lose to Kaiba, so I honestly don't expect Joey to win against him.
If Thousand Dragon can't attack the turn it is summoned (despite the BS of Kaiba's contact fusions doing so), Joey would have used the regular effect of time wizard (destroy opponent's mosnters and reduce their life points, which is the anime effect of time wizard). Kaiba would have saved his dragon with the trap card but baby dragon then attacks directly. Joey won this duel. Another case of writter BS. If they didn't want Joey to win, they shouldn't have written the duel with Joey winning.
As much as I love him, Kaiba is a cheat. Remember when Kaiba used XYZ dragon cannon against Yugi? That was a fusion monster technically. Shouldn't have been able to attack. It gets a pass because the parts were attached and weren't fused. Thousand Dragon should have been able to attack since it was aged by an effect of time wizard and not fused with it. Winner should have been Joey. Lol
Okay wait, I have a question here. Thousand Dragon was summoned via Time Wizard effect which makes it an effect monster not a fusion monster because of the conditions to summon it (just like Dark Sage) Why is it that he didn't attack then? He was able to, that's some plothole right there tho.
I actually figured out 2 ways joey could have won both involving the turn he took blue ey 1. Instead of attacking blade knight attack kiazer this would have bricked Kiara as he couldn't afford to crash blue eyes as he'd need to activate monster reborn just to summon it and joey even with his current hand would just beat over him as even if reborned kiazer blade knight would loose 400 attack from demise so even if he crashed than destroyed the other monster once joey got time wizard he'd win with thousand dragon 2. Instead of enemy controller take virus (ur not required to activate what u steal) than with full access to his grave summon Gilford don't let kiaba have 3 blue eyes at once and attack until he wins
So, in short, due to 3 anime only rulings....Joey lost when he should have won. Boy, oh boy....If he knew what we know right now, that chip on Joey's shoulder would be massive. 😂
you said that the virus sends all monsters in joeys hand, field, and deck with 1500+atk to the graveyard right? and then as long as the virus is in kaibas graveyard, joey can't special summon them? So what if joey Graverobbers the virus? Not to use it, but so it's passive is rendered useless. He now has a monster reborn and every strong monster in his deck in the graveyard.
Had to look up Crush Card Virus after this and thank goodness they didn't go with the anime interpretation of "Burn half your deck, kthnx" and thank goodness they then proceeded to update it several more times to make it something that could feasibly be allowed in games.
One thing that should be remembered is the game is much, much less accessible than the RL version. Blue Eyes itself is a card only the president of a multinational corporation with its own private military has access to. This duel is really a loss for Kaiba just by how much damage he received, both LP and pride.
Well if Joey played monster reborn if I had a lower monster like soggy the dark clown in his graveyard and Joe we would play his grave robber and take control of kaiba's crush card virus so does that mean that if he had the third blue eyes like dragon in his deck would kaiba lose a Yu-Gi-Oh duel between him and Joey.
