Brother, i always thought kobe was better than shaq and i still do. If you really disect the shaq and kobe era, you will find that their dynamics are more of an ernie and bert duo rather than batman and robin lol. It just so happened that shaq have no real competition during the finals but man, tim duncan would have won 6 or 7 rings if kobe was just a sidekick to shaq lol. Here are some interesting facts: Lakers faced the spurs during 00-01 and 01-02 playoffs. During those series, shaq averaged 24.2pts on 49.3%fg. Timmy averaged 26pts on 45%fg. Kobe 29.75pts on 48.2%fg. Clearly that aint no sidekick stat. If shaq was really that dominant, he would have put up hakeem olajuwon numbers when met with real competition. In 95, Hakeem averaged 35pts on 56%fg against mvp robinsons 23pts on 44%fg during tge wcf and he averaged 32.8pts on 48%fg against shaq's 28pts on 59%fg. That is real domination. Keep in mind that kobe was the main facilitator for the lakers during that era, and he was also their closer, he had more responsibilities than shaq,. Plus teams cant just easily souble shaq because kobe also draws double teams. Kobe did all that before he turned 24. Kobe may not be your cup of tea but you cant call him a sidekick to shaq just because shaq was the one who had no competition during the finals lol.

Bill Russell responded "I take Bill Russell, bcuz I will never distort your offense or your defense, the way I play, my team wins" In other words Bill Russell is saying he is the Greatest team player in the history of Pro-Basketball and the 11 rings in 13 years proves it!

nba is about context and something i get tired of is the ring stuff...the ring stuff matters between say mj and bird or lbj because they led their teams to titles as the clear best player so its their rings so its fair to compare....when you say kobe has 5 rings you never mention shaq being 2x better than kobe in 2000 for that first ring and being league mvp while kobe was not yet top 10 and how good shaq was in 2001 drawing double teams and getting guys intofoul trouble helping pace the floor for the open kobe who got open as teams guarded shaq...i like kobe but until 2002 he was not at his true prime...he had a great 2001 season and playoffs no doubt but he was not as skilled so like in 2011 he was not good enough to lead a team to the title he needed a 1.a to his 1.b as we saw....its facts...so when you say this nonsense like kobe led 5 teams to titles is a lie without shaq hes ringless for 12 years...just like dirk was unless he had another top 5 player somehow next to him like duncan or kg i guess...

@andwhat83 kobe definitely. Look at this fact, shaq and kobe are separated by 3.83 points in the playoffs during their 3 peat run. Kobe a perennial 1st team all defense member. Pau gasol and kobe are separated by a whooping 11.5 pts during the playoffs of their 3straight finals appearance. Kobe still all defense 1st team. Kobe can carry a much heavier load than shaq on both ends od rhe court. Add the fact that kobe can make plays while shaq need other players to make a play for him. Kobe is overrated by his biggest supporters and underrated by his biggest detractors. Dude is legit the 2nd greatest shooting guard of all time. The only reason the Lakers got through the Duncan-Robinson Spurs in 2002 is because Phil make Shaq defer to Kobe so he could abuse their pathetic excuse of a backcourt. Kobe pulled his fair share of the weight in that 3peat, Shaq just happened to pull his weight in the finals, because there was no center in the East that could even look him in the eye, let alone actually contend with him.

This is a very subjective question and is just really a matter of one's taste. Respectfully COJ, your top 10 favors Big Men and I can understand that. But, Shaq won nothing without great guard play let's not forget that. It is no coincidence that he had Kobe and DWade for his chips. And, not forgetting that Orlando Magic team with Penny, DScott, Nick Anderson etc. The fact of the matter is that Kobe and Shaq needed each other. Even after Shaq left Kobe needed skilled big men to get him 2 more chips (Gasol, Bynum). I'm no Kobe fan boy but I do believe that the media takes unwanted shots at him because he is the closest guard we've seen to MJ...and that ruffles alot of feathers and makes people uncomfortable. And, let's not act like MJ wasn't a "shot jacker" as well. I saw many nights when MJ would take about 40 shots to get his 50 points...but because he was MJ no one cared. But, when Kobe did it he was maligned for it.

I personally think both Shaq/Kobe love this and get off on fans remembering them because that's what they crave.... Both Shaq and Kobe left a lot on the table when it came to rings and potential... Kobe got hurt but he could have had 2 more titles alone had he been a more complete player or unselfish.

Cleveland drafted Kyrie as a franchise player and they could do so because LeBron James (another franchise player) left because he could not get it done... Irving was learning so the Shaq/Kobe thing in Kobe wanting to prove to himself he can do it alone with him being in the lead; Kyrie Irving wanted the same thing which is why he wanted out of Cleveland when he saw LeBron tried to get him traded... the Boston thing was like a franchise that was already established so Kyrie wasn't going to create his own legacy there... so that's another reason he chose Brooklyn instead of the Knicks because you have to have your own root/foundation of your legacy - whatever that legacy is... Irving is in the midst of it to see how far he can lead and take a team....It's the same thing LeBron learned but he went a different route than Kobe... Kobe Bryant is the only top 75 player to win back to back rings Finals MVP without another Top 75 player. People keep acting like Pau Gasol was a world beater or some shit. Pau Gasol was not as elite as he was until he teamed up with Kobe. Kobe Bryant has an argument for one of the greatest five year stretches in NBA history 06 to 10. Also the efficiency argument is so over blown because out of all those early 2000 guys who were also inefficient. None of and I mean none of them played defense as well as Kobe. In the first three peat with Shaq there are so many clutch plays on offense and defense that Kobe had that allowed them to win so often. This is not to say that Shaq wasn’t the best or undisputed. I just think your notion of saying Duncan is most disrespected player is wrong, it’s Kobe. For you to not see an argument for Kobe Bryant to be considered a top 10 player of all time, just sounds like hate or you are surrounded by irrational Kobe fans. How can a player be so highly regarded by his contemporaries. People who played in the NBA. Who know more about the game than any of us be so disrespected by people in the media.
@hardwoodthought1213

The issue here is your considering how a player ie viewed historically rather than how they played in the moment. Gasol from 05-07 made the playoffs three times with trash Memphis teams, Kobe during that same time only made it twice. Kobe never even made it out of the first round without a current All-NBA teammate (Shaq 96-2004, Gasol 08-11). Flip that, Duncan won 4 titles without a current All-NBA teammate, no one else had done that more than once. His help is vastly overrated and Kobe’s underrated

@@hardwoodthought1213 Those lakers teams were trash too and Kobe was injured in 2005. And the way you are talking you might as well just say Gasol was a better player than Kobe from 05 to 07. But he wasn’t, you know it and I know it. And it’s not like Duncan hasn’t had the most consistent supporting cast of all time. A lot of that is due Duncan functionality in the team concept but after the 2003 season I would venture to bet workload for Kobe was much greater for Kobe. Kobe had to be the best defensive and offensive player on his team. Duncan just had to be the best defensive. Not to take anything away from Duncan but the media loves him. Fans love Kobe. Duncan gets his flowers and the way he gets his flowers is by being in this argument with Kobe. Especially when you look at the head to head match up goes to Kobe.

Parker and Ginobli are better players than Gasol and Odom in my opinion. I saw Ginobli take over the 2005 Finals and I saw Parker win the 2007 Finals MVP as the clear cut best player. To say that Duncan teammates are underrated when Parker, Ginobli, Robinson, and Kawhi are HoFers is crazy. Outside of Shaq and Gasol we only have role players.
@hardwoodthought1213
@hardwoodthought1213 2 года назад
@@nov11794 Duncan was his teams best offensive player for 12 years and on 3 title teams, so more than Kobe, and best defensive player for 19. Flip that, Kobe, who is primarily a scorer, didn’t even lead his own team in scoring until his 7th season. Part of the reason Kobe’s workload was so much post-Shaq and pre-Gasol was because of Kobe, let’s not act like the team just suddenly decided to trade Shaq and fire Phil without input from Kobe. Gasol was of course not better, but fact remains from 08-11 he was one of the 15 best players in the NBA, as evidenced by All-NBA teams. In 99/03/05/07, Duncan didn’t have a top 15 teammate and still won. You act like Duncan shouldn’t be considered better? Dude has more MVPs, more FMVPs, more defensive teams, same All-NBA teams, far better longevity, higher highs (2003 what he achieved is far better than anything Kobe did) without the lows Kobe had, and was the best player for more champions. It’s Kobe who should feel relief that he is mentioned alongside Duncan, not the other way around
@nov11794
@nov11794 2 года назад
@@hardwoodthought1213 Not really. Kobe has the advantage in the head to head matchup against Duncan and throughout his career he has had to shoulder a huge burden on both sides of the ball and to just erroneously say he was the teams best offensive player until his 7th season is so disrespectful there were plenty of playoff series where he was the main option on offense on those early Laker teams. He was definitely the closer and he had a lot of clutch defensive and offensive moment in the three peat that led the lakers to win. And I’m not saying Duncan don’t deserve to be here I’m just sayings it’s a conversation for me. Kobe going to three straight finals from 08 to 10 is so underrated and under appreciated. Again in this three peat he had to be the teams best offensive and defensive player playing along side a guy for the majority was considered a top 15 guy, but is not a top 75 player like Robinson, Kawhi. I can also make the argument that a peak Parker (07) and Ginobli (05) played better than Gasol at any point of his Lakers stint. Like I said, he definitely in the conversation. And for people to shit on this man legacy and say he’s not is disrespectful when all of his contemporaries agree Kobe was the best player in their era We can look at stats and accomplishments, but at the end of the day it’s a team sport and when judging players individually ex-players first eye view needs to get more value than shooting percentage or whatever bullshit they like to use to shit on this man legacy.

The arguments made here doesn't make sense. It could easily be said that Shaq never won a finals MVP or season MVP without Kobe. It's often stated that Kobe created the beef between them but why was Shaq so quick to say that Miami was Wade's team when he moved. Shaq was NEVER the centerpiece of any team after he left LA. Kobe was more than an offensive player. He was first team defense 9X. But let's look at his offense, which is currently at 4th. Is Melo, McGrady, or any of his offensive contemporaries even close. MJ never won without Phil, would you take Shaq over MJ? Duncan never won without Pop, who is considered one of the greatest coaches all time. He played in the same system for his entire career. @@chroniclesofjudah144 His Daddy Joe played with the 76ers. At 3 & 4 years old KOBE was studying Doc & all the 76ers. Joe was doing with KOBE what KOBE was doing with GIANNA (GIGI). KOBE wanted to play for the 76ers, they took Iverson instead & Charlotte drafted him then traded him to L.A.L. I like your Channel, you give good info on the various Star/Superstars in the NBA. KOBE followed Jordan, but I see an awful lot of Doc in KOBE especially on his drives to the bucket. There's a lot of Doc in Jordan, tho' Jordan says that David Thompson was his favorite. Go figure. Few want to give Doc his credit & legacy in Pro Basketball. You are one of the very few that even calls his name.

Bruh, Kobe Bryant wasn't even 1 years old when his dad left Philadelphia to play for the San Diego Clippers. You have the right to your feelings, but please dont make things up. Jordan and Julius were both known for their large hands. Bryant had very small hands for his size and would routinely lose control of the basketball trying to do moves that Jordan and Dr. J did with ease. Thanks for viewing the video.

I understand your point of view but I think Steven A answered the question concisely. You may not like the answer but in the modern era of basketball, great centers have often relied on great guards/wings to get them easy baskets. Wilt doesn't win without Robertson/West, Kareem doesn't win without Robertson/Magic, Shaq doesn't win without Kobe/Wade and this was proven in Orlando. As great as Penny was and as dominant as Shaq was, they were still swept by Olajuwan and company (including Clyde Drexler - one of the all-time great shooting guards). In those finals, Hakeem & Shaq pretty much cancelled each other out. You have to stop with the pettiness regarding Kobe's shooting percentage. You mentioned the 5/28 performance in the finals but all great players have bad shooting night. Including the highly esteemed GOAT. Jordan shot 9/26 in the 98 Finals vs the Jazz. Does that diminish his greatness? There are more examples of those instances. It happens. It's part of the game. Regarding, Kobe vs. Duncan, would you not have to give credit to Coach Popovich regarding Tim Duncan's success with the Spurs in the same way you credit Phil Jackson for Kobe's success? We never saw Duncan play under any other coach so it's speculation to automatically assume Duncan guarantees 50 wins and a shot at the Finals. I've said it before and I will continue to say so: Shaq & Kobe were a partnership. Shaq was the Hub and FMVP because he was a household name. Lakers don't 3-Peat without Kobe. And there is a fairly legit argument for Kobe being awarded the FMVP in the 2001 Finals. Anyway, great video as usual. Peace.

I had to pause the once the time duncan part came lol so you're telling me time duncan wasnt the same as kobe in the mannerism that his coach elevated his game better than it would have been without him . I feel without pop tim Duncan wouldnt have had as much playoff success as he did because he knew how to make players play past their expectations

Let's just say one could shoot a free throw and despite how much I love the other one.. the other one couldn't. Actually KOBE> lebron all time, Kobe a better shooter, better defender, better dribbler, better footwork, more sports physco, more sports assass*in, played for longer in an era with real defense and never even tried to make a superteam.. and by the way..one more championship.

Kobe wasn't better than Shaq in his first 3 rings, although Shaq was just slightly better. Kobe needed Shaq to win and Shaq needed Kobe to win. Funny how you never mention that Kareem and Magic both needed each other to win, one has 2 finals mvps and one has 3 finals mvps and you criticize Kobe's rings bruh 😂. I agree fully with your other takes. In their primes, Shaq was better too and I can say that I can see why you don't have Kobe in your top 10, even though I do.

Aztec Prince Jordan in that same system with no Shaq type because he was capable shooting 51-54% FG, never scoring under 22 points in finals games, never under 15 points in playoff games, and went to college, playing in a passing offense, where originally Worthy was 1st option, Perkins, was 2nd, so he didn’t mind feeding his teammates once he trusted them, but they and Dean Smith like Phil Jackson, never won a title, until they got their hands on Jordan. We saw prime Kobe he missed the playoffs, blew a 3-1 lead and couldn’t leave the first round. We never saw prime Jordan without Pippen. But we saw a non prime Pippen barely contributing and bulls made it out first round. We saw MJ make it to ECF win 2 games vs Pistons when everyone else got swept, before Phil was Bulls head coach as the alpha!

Aztec Prince rules were changed for Kobe to stop having those Utah Jazz series , and for Lebron to stop having that 41% FG rookie season same as Kobe, and to stop having those 2007 Spurs FG% series and 2008 Celtics FG% series! Without those rule changes these dudes would be even more inconsistent and inefficient and Kobe still had some bad finals FG%, multiple game 7’s. Because They didn’t understand utilizing your teammates to find easier shots in the physical defense era with dominant big men, consistently enough when facing great team defense! We saw what the Pistons did to Kobe the bad boys the inspiration for all that defense shit never did that to Jordan because he went to college and listened and worked he wasn’t a know it all!
