Legendary producer and Michael Jackson collaborator Quincy Jones recently accused the King of Pop of stealing parts of songs, copying rhythmic grooves, and other forms of musical plagiarism. But do Jackson’s borrowings add up to actual theft?

The so-called "moonwalk" was called: "Backsliding" in my 'Hood in Oakland, California, USA, in the 60's & 70's, b4 breakdancing, Michael popularizing it, and the mass media calling it: "the moonwalk". It was a "Boogaloo" maneuver, ("Boogaloo" WAS a non-violent, urban, street dance style/type popular in the ghetto's and barrios in the USA, in the 60's & 70's) usually danced around an opponent to designate a challenge to a one-on-one "boogaloo" dance off. So the Backslide would b p4med to: intimidatingly denote all the enclosed ground area as the dancer's personal space: "my dance floor", marking the dancer's "territory & stage", and would mark the beginning (and often ending) of the dancer's solo per4mance. The backslide/moonwalk is an example of an aspect "peculiar", once exclusive, 2, & originating in, a minority culture that becomes widespread and co-opted after introduction 2 a wider audience. (Popularized). After white people saw Michael's per4mances showcasing the dance move, said he invented it, (out of ignorance because they had never seen it b4! It sure wasn't per4med at the Grand Ole Opry in Tennessee or on Dick Clark's (White) American Bandstand Television Show!) I used 2 hear people correct their kids in "The 2'Hood" 2 call it "Backsliding" not "moonwalking". "white kids "moonwalk", Black Kids Backslide!!!" heeeheee! Note: The term "Boogaloo" has now un4tunately & sadly, been co-opted by the Far-Right, Republican, white Nationalists/white supremacist tribes & bases 2 mean a deliberate, pre-meditated, violent, populist up-rising, anti-liberal, anti-government insurrection, and civil war. (Why couldn't they the use the waltz or the shag? Why did they have to use a term that was from the domain of people they despise?)

Similarities should not be labelled as plagiarism. All of those songs haven't even aged well like Michael 's. Michael was a legend who knew music. Who was inspired by literally anything he saw and studied.. Michael made great music. He was not a theif lol. The music Quincy has been crying about doesn't even sound the same. Also there’s a difference between blatantly copying and putting stuff in your own words or in Michael Jackson’s case beats. He may have taken inspiration but never copied things all out. Like his dancing. He took moves from James Brown and Fred Astaire and made them his own. He refined the moves and did them in his style. Like the moonwalk Michael Jackson didn’t create he just made it better to where people think of him when you do the move. Also the Robot dance was made famous by MJ during dancing machine. Michael just made the moves look better because he did in his own way and style 💯

This is very common in heavy metal for example, like: the down picking in the riff of Looks That Kill (Motley Crue) and Look What the cat dragged in (Poison) (Like, you listen to something so much that your brain uses it when you creates without you see it) . No one truly creates from nothing. Philosophically you can't get something from nothing. Creativity doesn't work like that. Everything is a recombination of various elements of what we know to produce something new. That same Moonwalk but into a different context IS new. Or the bass line put into a new rhythm and key context is new. That is how creativity works. You can't create something from nothing.

This would be how creativity generally works in fact. This is neurobiology. Creativity is using things in a way that is either useful or plays with the way your brain works in certain ways. However, when you create something, it's rarely ever (directly) something new. Whatever you create is taken from things you already know or skills you already posess. If a dance were to freestyle, they will always use steps they already know. Even the ones that they've never seemingly done before are likely a combination of steps they already know. That's how creating things works in the end. So yes, the music industry is full of stuff where people are inspired by one another and then interpreted in their own special way. Michael is no exception to that.

This video is dumb. They didn't explain well everything : - Billie Jean is just a coincidence, and it's not even similar. And Michael never admitted stealing stuff for Billie Jean, or any other songs. - he won the lawsuit against The Ink Spot so we shouldn't even talk about it. - The Girl Is Mine doesn't even sound similar to the other song - Don't Stop 'TilYou Get Enough : Greg Phillinganes did write the bridge BUT Michael modified it a lot, removing his co-writing credit. - Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' : it was Quincy Jones idea, not Michael's.

Greg wasn't credited. He wrote that c-section on Dont stop . MJ otherwise wrote the whole song. I think it was dear to MJs heart so he didn't want to share credits. Also Quincy said MJ didn't want that part on the song, Quincy forced it on. I personally love that part, but MJ didn't. Its probably another reason he didn't want to give credit? Just remember Greg was on MJs Bad, Dangerous tours as musical director etc and always shared good memories of MJ and spoke of him fondly. Who knows the real reason why MJ back tracked on Gregs 10% - it might just be the shrewd businessman in him not wanting to give away royalties and knowing that Greg's mere association with MJ was value in itself?
@CCI320

Greg did get a arrangement credit. He does not deserve half a writing credit for a few bars of horn playing. Michael wrote Don't stop til you get enough. and he shouldn't have to share credit with someone who contributed a few seconds to his song. putting him on as writer would have had people thinking he did half of the song which is false. Michael wrote most of we are the world by himself but gave Lionel Richie half credit for the tiny contribution he made. He was very generous.

Take a listen to the end tune of Jaws or the Al Bano song. Yes he transferred these songs into his own songs, but those two cases can be seen as plagiarism. The song Heal the World was just partially using an melody that was the backbone of it. There is also some similarity in the song of Dokken (hard rock) Alone again. The song of Al Bano was more similair then the Inkpot song. I fail to see how he got away with it. Furthermore his producers owned rights of songs and used them. That wasn't just Michael's fault. Michael was an idea's man. The greatest songwriters are real musician's like Mark Knopfler, Steve Harris, Bob Dylan. Nowadays you can't find songs that are just played in on the first take without using overdubs and many songs are interpolated. That exactly shows are music is degrading. Real musician's like Motorhead did record in one take without overdubs. This music level is gone and that is very sad. Men like Jimi Hendrix or Rory Galagher those are real musicians. songwriters. Michael isn't a real musician but he did well with the talent he had to get the maximum out of that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fS_jrDlimOI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PHgY53QXTyA.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qf5Q2Ix-VJs.html

@@CCI320 I know that "you are not alone" was written by R.Kelly. But it was plagiarism. But not by Michael. Will you be there was based on an old song like I mentioned. But so was Michael's song. But he didn't mention based on etc. which still makes it plagiarism. Compare it to Black rose or Whiskey in the jar (Thin lizzy mentioned the origins of the songs). Furthermore as much as Michael was about perfect dancing and clips. There hasn't been any artist who had to deal with this many plagiarism cases. Of course he has the benefit of the doubt because it very often wasn't proven. And of course we have all these discussions about the involvement of Toto. It was also a common thing that playing musicians didn't get recognised in those days. Steve Luthacker wrote the solo of Running in the night (Lionel Richie), bass and guitar parts of Beat it. It's on RU-vid were he claimed this (interview in which he was quite annoyed). I can send the link if you want. They brought in Van Halen to play it because he was a hard rock guitarists. In both cases Michael could have given them a percentage. Of course we know MJ wasn't a decent musician (professional level). Other trendsetters who died not too long ago like David Bowie, Lou Reed and Prince who both in my opinion were contributing much more to the improvement of music and have not been involved in this many plagiarism cases.

Disappointing to find out so many famous musicians and bands ripped stuff off...Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath. Fortunately Jethro Tull is one of the few bands that never ripped anything off, at least not on their main albums (although there is a Dire Straits case, but that was on a terrible album). They are pretty much 100% original, like most prog rock bands, Rush as well.

And that someone taught him the move, and then he put his own spin on it, then did it for the first time live. And guess what, Jeffrey Daniel, the guy who taught Michael the moonwalk, didn’t create it either. Like Michael, he saw kids doing the dance on the streets. If you look at all the video clips of people doing the moonwalk, and then you look at Michael’s, you’ll clearly see that the moonwalk evolved and changed overtime and became what it is today when Michael Jackson came along. Cab Calloway, who was a dancer and did the moonwalk in the 30s, was asked in the 80s about it, right after Michael did it, and Cab said that move has been around forever, and that back then, it was called “the buzz”

Lot of composers and producers owned rights and interpolated songs, that is not just the fault of Michael. But the Jaws end tune and the Al bano song are clearly plagiarism. The song of Al Bano was much more similair then the song of Inkspot. The Jaws end tune is clearly copied and that was the backbone of the MJ song Heal the world. Michael has written some songs. In the end I wouldn't put him on the same level as real songwriters like Steve Harris, Mark Knopfler or Bob Dylan. Those were true musicians. Mark Knopfler may have not written songs in his head but the end result was never a stolen track. That is what counts in the end. Michael had idea's but the difference to Mark Knopfler is that the latter is much more of an advanced musician who doesn't need that much of help from other's. Steve Harris, Adrian Smith of Iron Maiden are in the same league; brilliant songwriters. Or let's not forget David Gilmour. Nowadays you don't find that much of strong musician's who can record a song without overdubs in the first take. Motorhead could do this. Michael was a great artist, but not the ivy league of song writing.

Like Lemmy explains in this interview. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vSfr4dHuMv0.html Michael Jackson and all his influences like Bieber are way overrated from the standpoint of composing and musicianship. Makes you kind of sad what kind of "musicians" we still have in the younger generation. Michael is way overrated. Better education in musicianship is necessary. Sadly music lessons on an instrument are not part of the education of kids in the Netherlands.
