I've got a PC and I use Davinci Resolve, so I would have preferred BRAW, since ProRes doesn't even work in my computer.

The problem with adding BRAW to their cameras is the fact that it's BMD's property. They sell their own cameras and Video Assists for that purpose.

Yeah, I mentioned in another comment that although their cameras sit in a whole other camera category, I do still think there is some cross-over in the market. The Video Assist is certainly a good option for those wanting to shoot BRAW. They have actually just announced an update with support for the GH7, so they are being very reactive to the market.

BLACKMAGIC joined the L-Mount alliancy so perhaps they will offer BRAW INTERNAL as an extra to the leica family. Santa might supprise us, who knows

Yeah that was a fundamental mis-step in my opinion and one of the reasons I have held off from pre-ordering the GH7. I do understand that another CF Express slot adds size and additional heat output to the body though. As a consolation, I would have liked to see a second USB port introduced in to the camera. It seems like they just re-used the body to save money and with that they re-introduce all the same flaws.

@@stevelittonits not a misstep. The gh7 is a hybrid camera for hybrid shooters like me. I use cfexprexss for high quality video and the sd card for me fotos. The gh line is and never was for filmmakers only. Just think outside your box and you know why gh7 is like it is after all the video only guys always can use a ninja or record on a harddrive. People like me are very happy with what lumix did.

Yeah I get that its not an issue for everyone but I find having mismatched cards that cannot do backup recording internally very frustrating. Its also a bit of a pain in playback having to switch between the cards.

@@castielvargastv7931 I have the G9II and I think it was a misstep not including cfexpress on that one. The 60fps burst mode is near unusable, even on the a V90 SD-card. Culling photos is slow (even with FastRawViewer) due to the 40MB size per raw file. I ended up just permanently strapping an SSD to mine with a hair band and that mostly solves the issue, except now I have to go through the menu to switch to internal recording any time I want to record 4k120p. A cfexpress slot would have remedied all of that. I don't want to sound too negative. I can just go to 20fps burst, which is plenty, and overall I love the camera, but I'm already eyeing possibly upgrading to the GH7 at some point just for the screen and the cfexpress slot.

@@vanzetti7 some people won't want to have 2 CFEXPRESS cards. The cards don't come cheap. I'm sure in future cameras thier will be two CFEXPRESS sluts and Ssd cards will fade away

They are targeting this camera as a companion to Arri Alexa where Alexa has Arri Raw and Apple Prores codecs only. Many projects in Alexa are shot in Prores 422 or HQ for easier file management. So it makes sense. If you can set your exposure and white balance to approximate levels, Prores 422 is a better choice. It also records via USB to an SSD drive.

This is purely just ProRes RAW I am talking about here. You can already shoot ProRes 422 or HQ on the GH6 and even the G9m2 which is great. Although only the GH6 has the option for the paid Arri LogC3 profile out of the 2 cameras. I know Arri have their own RAW video format, so I figured that using ProRes RAW doesn't really make sense there. But you will have to excuse my ignorance because I haven't shot on Arri cameras and that is why I didn't really go in to that in the video 🙂

I only use up to standard ProRes with the GH6, I don't use ProRes RAW, though I wouldn't be surprised if Panasonic offers Blackmagic RAW in a future firmware update for the GH7.

I am not sure we would ever see it in the GH7. Blackmagic just announced a Video Assist update for BRAW support over HDMI. Who knows what might happen in the future though.

No problem. You are in a good spot if you are using FCPX as that has the best compatibility for ProRes and ProRes RAW.

Internal BRaw would be amazing but no other cameras other than those made by BM can shoot it internally. I hope that changes and BM opens up the licensing for internal BRAW to other camera companies now that the whole RED patent nonsense is over.

Who knows, it seems like a lot of other companies came up with their own RAW formats, I thought Panasonic might follow suit there. I guess its a lot of work to get it supported natively by all the major editing suites. I think BRAW always fell in to a grey area of internal RAW because its semi-compressed RAW.

I actually went for a p4k after plannning to buy the gh7 - i realised i dont want auto focus and preferred the Braw and there is no IBIS but it does record gyro data inside the clip so it can be stabilized in post (with some control)

It sounds like you made the right choice from what you have said there. The P4K looks like a great camera and getting Resolve Studio with it makes it such a good deal!

@@NixCM Oh really. If you are selling the licence key, I would be interested. I was planning on getting the speed editor for that exact reason but I am not really sure how much I would use it. How do you find it?

BRAW is great and resolve supports it. External recording of BRAW is not very practical.

In that case, the Blackmagic cameras are the most suitable product for your workflow.

On the upside there is a Blackmagic Video Assist compatibility update already for the GH7. So there is an option for BRAW, albeit not internally.

Hi Steven, I purchased new GH7 and was testing/recording during the weekend. but when I came home, I realized, I cant play prores RAW on my Windows PC and I cant also EDIT them in Premier Pro. I checked every possible info online, installed codec from Apple, everything I'm using has newest drivers etc. And I still cant even check what I recorded. I will check with Lumix tomorrow, but if they dont help, I dont know what to do honestly. Cheers, Tomas

Hey Tomas, you will need to download the ProRes Raw decoder from the Apple website here - support.apple.com/en-us/106401 then restart Premiere and try importing the footage.

@@stevelitton yeah I saw and checked this, sadly I dont have internal graphic card to disable. Ill try to call Panasonic support tomorrow, will let you know if they have any solution. I didn't expect issues like this, thank you for suggestions, appriciated!

it's not about choice, it's about licensing I guess. BMRaw is still exclusive to BM products

Yeah, if they did start licensing it would certainly have an impact on the camera side of their business. Although they are clearly defined as cinema cameras and not mirrorless hybrid cameras, there is definitely some market cross-over.

Pro res raw files are way to big and do not work with resolve so i do not understand why they put on the `GH7 when they have ext BRAW on the video assist ? anyway I bouhgt the video Assist for sdi converter playback ext recording and BRAW to the GH6 , because my other camera is a BMPCC4k the GH7 would complete the pack. (DJi Focus Pro is a must for the prior two cameras)

Sounds like a nice setup and BRAW makes a lot of sense there. But I suppose if you can use ProRes RAW in your workflow it removes the need to have to buy a Ninja or Video Assist monitor.

ProRes Raw was added to make the GH7 more stand out other then the PDAF. To camera will cost 2k witch is more then the S5ii and the S5iix. Its the most expensive MFT camera Lumix as done. Also think Lumix added Prores Raw to get the cameras RU-vidrs to buy it as they are often obbsess with ProRes Raw . Thing is the CFEXPRESS card. They cost far more then Sd cards. If you're shooting wedding's in ProRes Raw witch is around 7-8 hours that 1.5tb of stroage needed or higher. So a TB CFEXPRESS card would be needed witch would be 600USD. If the videographer already have the Atomos Nijia or Black magic they wont need to shoot ProRes Raw just use ProRes ProRes raw is great but the file size means bigger cards.

Yeah it's just the same price as the GH6 was when it was released. It does have more options than the entry level S series cameras, so the additional cost is justified. For ProRes RAW you can just use an SSD and get 2TB for just over £100 or use a DIY NVMe CF Express card if you are really hard up. Yeah it's not something I shoot in much but it's handy to have that option if you need it without having to use an external monitor.

@@stevelitton the GH7 is what the GH6 was ment to be. The GH6 had the hype then faded really quick. Think Lumix rushed it as thier was such a demand for it. They could have waited and released the GH6 with PDAF. As for the Specs. Yeah for the price it would have to have better or more specs then the S5ii or x. Though how often will users shoot in 5k or 6k ? Computers still struggle with 4k when editing so will diff struggle with 5k or 6k editing and with ProRes Raw added even more. Would need a top end system to handle it. The GH7 will be like haveing a Ferrari that can do 193.9 mph but living in a place that the speed limited is 40mph. The car looks nice feels good driving but can never go full speed so it's just wasted.

@@orinorio1 The timing of the GH6 was not the best, there is no denying that. To be honest I mostly shoot in 5.8k open gate or 5.7k 60fps. They are both great for 4k delivery or if you need multiple crops for different formats. You have that extra bit of space for cropping or stabilising footage if needed. I use an M1 MacBook Pro and have no issues editing the files. I really enjoy using the GH6, I just wish they made some improvements to the camera design alongside the additional features.

@@stevelitton for YT you do videos like you do can use those Codcs. As you don't have to edit much. For someone shooting a 8hr wedding day in 5K an ProRes or PPraw that would wouldn't work for them as the file sizes would be massive and they have 8hrs footage to edit and colour grade. I have a 1tb card for the Atomos Nijia Five. If I shoot in ProRes I have 4hrs with Raw it's far less. If I shoot H.264 I get 19 hours. Also since I use PC and have the specs made for editing I don't struggle to edit H.264 so easy to edit and rander. Also I don't shoot V log when doing weddings so just made small tweaks on the footage. ProRes is cool but it's not the end all be all. Great footgage is great footage based on the person who captures the footgage.

@@orinorio1 I do long event shoots all the time and just use the internal LongGOP or All-I footage and it is fine. I find ProRes (not RAW) doesn't really make any noticable difference in terms of speed or image quality. I would only generally use RAW for something like an interview where the client had requested it as it takes longer to work with.

ProRes Raw is useless unless you use Final Cut Pro X. Even in Premiere it requires extra steps to put it in the right colour space you don't get full controls. If u want to use it with Davinci you have to convert it to CDNG which takes ages and requires even more space.

Its not ideal for a lot of people but nice to have for those who can use it in their workflow even if that is a small portion of the market.
