This is a license I will pick up as soon as it is available for my GH6. I have not added the GH7 to our inventory quite yet. We are still considering some of the attractive full frame Lumix cameras, however that is tempered by our extensive supply of classic glass that has been adapted for MFT and not L-mount. I honestly like the cost and variety of lenses we can afford for MFT that would be bank busters on full frame L-mount cameras. Seeing if we can adapt everything to PL-Mount is a thing we are beginning to look at also. I think some clients will like the sound of us delivering Arri LogC3 files to them. Yes sometimes name recognition will make a potential client more interested in the value you are delivering to their project. Arri is a name that is respected by many.

Unless you are going to match Panasonic GH cameras with Arri cameras then this Arri Log C3 ia an expensive folly. Panasonic's own vLog profile is exceptionally good to begin with and with a bit of tinkering you can get close to the Arri profile.

As I say, it's really those base ISO values that make it interesting to me. If they just end up being the same, then the interest is largely gone for me at least 🙂

@@stevelitton Just so I understand, the arri log won't bring the ISO down on the GH6, right? That's locked into the hardware/sensor, correct?

@@lanceevans1689 That I am not sure of, because it seems to bring down the base ISO on the GH7 down from 500 to 320. I could be completely wrong here, it might just come in and be the same, there is nothing concrete yet to confirm either way.

@@stevelitton 500 down to 320 seems within margin of gamma shifting resulting in effective ISO variation. Rather than any actual HW sensitivity shift. Remember back in the film days, you could choose to rate iso depending on your dev and techniques. Similar concept. Let us know when you find out, thanks Steve!

dude, honestly there is already a comparison of GH6 vs GH7, the colors on the latter are worse than the first, the latter goes green due to the addition of focus points. I don’t think it’s worth paying for arias when your V log is cooler!

It's not so much that I don't like V Log, it's great. My issue is more with the base ISOs available when using it. I am just wondering if the base ISOs might be different with this picture profile.

@@stevelitton color is more important than DD, that's why they offer to buy you loot from arri because color is the most important thing!

@@ggdfggdfgdffgfddg34 For me, if I can just reduce that noise floor a bit whilst retaining the maximum DR I would be a lot happier. Whether thats in V Log or Arri LogC3 I don't mind.

That's obviously not confirmed. I am just stating that at the launch of this profile they know that it won't be in the camera at that time. If there ever was a time to introduce it, it seems like alongside this picture profile would have been a good one.

Very Cool info Steve. I'd like the idea of getting it for my GH6. Are you going to go for it. How much is it? Like 200 bucks? Interested in seeing how you make out with it. The thing I’m interested in is if it will handle aces transforms better than vlog. That would be a huge advantage if so, because currently the only option for a vlog aces transform is the v35 which is technically an incorrect transform but the results are still better than a rec709 cst. if I can use logC3 to transform my gh6 footage in aces, im confident that would be a pretty heavy upgrade

Ah I don't use ACES, so am not really up to speed on the workflow there but hopefully this update makes it easier for you.

Even if you install ARRI LogC3 on the GH6, I don't think dr boost on the GH6 can be shot at ISO 500.

There is no confirmation on any of that at the moment but it will be interesting to see what the ISO values are with DR Boost disabled and enabled. Lets just wait and see.

That's my assumption as well. I'd like to be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that is locked into the sensor hw. If not, and it brings DRB base to 500 or whatever, then totally worth the $200. Though as gh6 buyers got a bit shorted (price drops, no phase AF, etc), it would be a nice thanks to gift it to the gh6 users.

Question: why would you want the extra dynamic range when shooting indoors? I personally never felt like I needed it indoors. Outdoors in sunlight it’s a different story. And then yes, ISO2000 in V-log with DR boost on is cumbersome. But indoors I just leave dr boost off and find the dynamic range to be plenty

I thought that might get asked. I find it useful for additional highlight recovery in some event or attraction shooting situations where there are quite dark rooms with bright spotlights for example. The shoot I did the other day had a very dark room where there was very harsh upward lighting and without DR Boost a lot more of the shot was completely blown out. Just for general indoor use, I don't really need it but I don't like to be restricted when I do need it.

Unless I ever get my hands on Arri footage, which I doubt will ever happen, then Panasonic's own vLog colour profile is perfect for me. At first I got all giddy wanting to buy this colour profile, until I worked out that its not Arri's Colour Science and does not offer much if anything at all over vLog can give me with my Panasonic GH6. The GH7 is a great camera, but I won't be rushing out to get it. My G9m2 is practically a GH7 minus the Tally Light and flippy screen.

@@frankinblackpoolHow did you work out it’s not ARRI colour science? I had a brief chat with Daria Fissoun the other day and she seems to think there’s more going on under the hood. I’m hoping to get some more info tomorrow

Yeah, I think it kind of just struck me a bit when I was shooting indoors and I had a moment where I had to consider using an ND filter Vs changing the aperture which is just a bit mad 🙂

Being a different sensor on the GH7, I doubt if updates will come to the GH6 any longer, except perhaps an update that cuts across board their cameras.

@@daytad Different sensor but clearly the same internals as the GH7 otherwise we would have seen much more of a upgrade, it essentially shoots the same as the GH6, bar ProRes RAW which is more of a licencing thing than anything else. But with the GH7 out now they won't want to take anything away from that.

@@stevelitton When I film outside, I find that ISO 2000 limitations during summer months can be quite frustrating. I checked other GH cameras and they got at least 4 years firmware support (such as GH5, GH5S). I hope GH6 can get real improvement soon!

@@stevelitton The 2000 base is my biggest peeve with the gh6. Alas I agree. If that was going to be corrected, it likely would have been already. But its not like shooting w/o boost is the worst thing in the world. After all, half the time we don't see a diff anyway.

@@lanceevans1689 Yeah you are absolutely right, there are only certain situations where DR Boost really pays dividends, the rest of the time I don't bother to toggle it on 🙂

Do you see the difference between a standard vlog and an extended one?

I do find there is a little bit more that I can recover, I did the shot with and without DR Boost and it did make a bit of difference. It was quite an extreme lighting condition though where having the most dynamic range is really beneficial. I don't use it all the time, sometimes it's just not needed.

@@stevelitton At ISO 2000 there is a bit of noise in the video. If the lighting allows, I don’t shoot at this ISO.

What ISO 500 are you talking about? In gh6 ISO 250 with vlog.

No sorry, that's 500 iso V Log on the G9m2 and GH7 (under 60fps)

@@lnuponom2678 but that's without DR Boost on. The new cameras are doing 500 iso with DR Boost enabled. That's pretty good. But if you don't use it then I guess it makes no odds.

I thought I heard last week that ARRI was good for both GH6 & GH7. But what I wondered is if you had to pay the $200 extra for both cameras or if one license was good for the pair if you happened to both models.
