Was Sumeru... Disappointing?

I'm starting to realize that Sumeru is one of the least explored regions for many players, even those around my same AR level, and I see the reason as to why.
Coupled with how lackluster many of the Sumeru 5 stars and 5 stars are, I'm speaking on them as to how they could be the main issue why so many players probably don't see Sumeru in a great light anymore.

Sumeru's desert is the root. The rainforest area was simply magnificent idk why they never expanded it
@doug3454
@doug3454 11 месяцев назад
I'm thinking they thought "we already have a good amount of forests; even though it's a rainforest, it's still a forest; we probably won't put out any deserts anymore (maybe in Natlan though?), so let's put more deserts instead". I didn't really mind the first one because it did truly feel like a breath of fresh air to me (just really wish we already had the layered maps at that point) and the 3rd one because it looked different enough with the abyss thingy, the swamp and the huge oasis (and Sorush exploration was actually kinda fun to me), but the 2nd desert was just... ugh. I wish the 2nd desert was a rainforest expansion instead; that way it would've been rainforest-desert alternation instead of 3 deserts in a row.
@fleetingimmersion
@fleetingimmersion 9 месяцев назад
@@doug3454 I suspect it's because the rainforest is so multi-layered. It has many underground caves as well as tree canopies to explore, so probably took a lot of work to model and design. The desert is a lot more straightforward, at least away from any 'features' you investigate (temples, camps, outposts, etc).

@@doug3454i agree. they should have done forest - desert - forest - desert. the forest - desert - desert - desert was just too much. too much sand.

To be honest, I was really looking forward to the desert. BotW handled the desert so well that I was expecting an even grander and more immersive experience. I was expecting environmental hazards that spice up the desert exploration, quicksand, (true) sandstorms, (true) mirages, maybe some mechanic with desert heat... instead it was just... a giant empty space, where you have to press forward on the controller for minutes to get where you want to go. There is almost _nothing_ to see on the surface...

@JeSt4m

I mean have Genshin handled anything as good as BotW? Every nitty gritty detail in BotW is basically what made it BotW. To be fair tho the dessert in BotW is also pretty boring If not for the sand lizard fast travel, it's cool but not as cool as the snow mountain. Genshin dessert is fine if you look it as multi-layered map like Chasm and Sumeru as a whole... it's just that the dev are far too late in releasing the layered map. Usually I'm really good at remembering location using map but the lack of underground map made the TP waypoint in dessert into a lottery.

I actually think that underground mazes make a lot of sense, cuz in actual pyramids, where faraons were buried, their tombs had lots of treasures, so to prevent thiefs from getting in, people were constructing those mazes, where thiefs would get lost and die eventually. Imo sumeru dessert was supposed to be hard and tricky. Just a thought I suddenly had.
@cynicalducky1041
@cynicalducky1041 8 месяцев назад
Even if their intent was going for hard and tricky, that doesn't mean it has to be a pain in the ass to do. The fact that Genshin didn't release Sumeru with the underground map feature was a huge dumb oversight. Sure, they fixed it with the underground map now but for portions where the underground had multiple layers was absolutely a huge pain in the neck.

in my opinion, the story that sumeru gave was actually really great. so many twists and epic cutscenes made it really enjoyable for me. also it was nice to see scaras development as a character. but the only wary thing was the exploration. usually i have no issues with exploring the map. in fact its something i adore doing. but sumerus map, espescially the desert was such a chore. i didnt even wanna explore it for primos. at a point i even thought i was burn out from genshin. but when fontaine released i realised it was not genshin i was burned out with, it was sumeru.

The second act was so great.. I keep trying to understand what is happening but every guess is wrong.. and the story slowly shows more evidence as to what is actually going on.. and that's probably the only story where I felt so invested in a character that I felt really sad that Dunyarzad died, and was so relieved that Nahida managed to save her from her dying breathe.. it has so much mystery and the race against time thrill it added together with that twist ending was top notch storytelling for me..

Sumeru is what made me have a 6 month break. I missed out on fontaine, its new areas, stories and characters. Only now that im actually getting back to it. It feels way too much. The maze like cave system in the dessert, the amazon type jungle and vast dessert made every single quest that made me explore a chore. This is the only region that I rushed into, getting all the waypoints as soon as possible cause I wanted to do these archon and world quests asap. I also hated how some places are just closed. You can’t go here unless you interact with this person in the middle of dessert, or the most hair tearing puzzles. Don’t know what feature this item does and I also don’t care. This is the only region that I will not try to 100% it’s so terrible that if I go back to it, I might actually just quit the game. Fontaine on top.

2:15 - you don't need to find the 76 aranara to unlock that desolate region. All you needed to do was to do a chain of 4 quests for few aranara. The 76 dreaded thing was about unlocking treasure chests in a cave in their "village"

I absolutely loved sumeru exploration (dont kill me pls) but because I did the desert part over time. Those underground explorations were indeed very long and confusing, but if I started getting stressed I would give up and search up a video on how to get to somewhere, and it probably took me a longggg time to finish 100%, just as I did with aranara quest (which I also adore). It may be because I'm sick of genshin easy puzzles, such as any puzzle we find in fontaine (or really anywhere except for those statues on inazuma that we push and pull), so at least the fact that it would take me a while to understand how to get to places inside a labyrinth was fun. The superior part was really a disappointment, but also kind of accurate, since it made me feel like that place really was abandoned and suffered after the forbidden knowledge, and how the desert people were separated from the rest of sumeru. Oh, and about everything being locked behind quests (such as aranara quests) I dont really get it. I would just mark the places on my map and return there later. It was actually a great way of still having things to do even after almost completing the exploration.

You did not need to find all the Aranara for the quest tho. it was just a for a few chests. And how do you not go to the city? Aranara quest (which is not even mandatory) takes place over all of the jungle. If you had time to explore that much, you could have definitely went to the city. If you talk about damage, Tighnari really does not have much on Cyno. They aren't the strongest, but they function as intented. If anything, I would say Tighnari deals even less damage? Correction, Nilou is not used for hyperbloom (she does not work there). She is used in Bloom teams. Nahida did not save dendro. Dendro was already really strong even with characters like dmc and collei (who are already really weak by themselves). Nahida just completely broke dendro though.

I joke with my friend that genshin is not powercreeping, but it's 'real estate'-creeping. Everything just seems to be getting bigger: bigger land to explore, bigger cities, bigger harddrive to put all that in. At least with fontaine they reigned it a bit for exploration, the areas are smaller but are more saturated with things to do.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I'll just say this. the nation itself isn't disappointing, the music is beautiful, but the archon quest...yeah- I don't even know what they were trying to do with it, it felt like a chore. once I FINALLY got to the somewhat interesting parts (which were at the VERY end of the archon quest ffs-), at that point, I was extremely bored and wasn't really shocked by anything. and Sumeru's archon quest isn't the only quest that has this problem, many other quests do. I actually wonder when will the Traveler finally snap out and go "manage the problem yourself goddammit" to the NPCs, bc I've already gotten to that stage, and probably many others did too.

Sumeru was so tiring to explore. Finding those 76 aranaras was annoying. like you have no idea which ones are missing and the game doesn’t at least give you a gadget to find the last 1 or 2 aranaras left. And then the Aranara world quests were within this book with quests within a quests. It’s so many levels of quests. and they did it again in the desert mechanism-related quests. and then the entirety of sumeru had too high walls to climb and vast empty spaces. and before the underground maps were introduced, the mazes underground were so horrible. And there was just too much desert areas. 3 major areas are desert. It was just too much sand. i finished exploring fontaine first before i did with Sumeru desert areas. i developed an aversion to desert areas because of Sumeru.

Hm, it is a pretty hot take there. My biggest problem with Sumeru it is not what it is in Sumeru, but how it is in Sumeru. I don't feel enough distinctivness in the jungle or in the desert ragen. The whole thing just melt into itself. But I heavily disagree with the charatcer takes, most Sumeru charatcer were good or okey at least, exception is Dori, Dehya and Kaveh who are pretty bad. (Dori the least bad but she doesn't do anything for any team really) Though, Faruzan is a pain before C4 at least, but with C6 she is one f the the best specialist support in the game. Candace have a place in Nilou teams with YaoYao and if we really want to strech it she can be used instead of Xingqiu in some teams if your Xinqiu is currently busy in the other side. Layla have a strong shield and currently she gained a very good friend with Neuvillette, but otherwise as well she can be slot into a lot of teams as a defensive option + cryo applicator.

I'm personally still exploring sumeru after i finished fontaine's story quest, And i thought the exploration was fine in the forest, plus i did kinda enjoy the aranara quest to some degree. But as I'm startung the desert i am confused af. Even with all the underground maps. My lowest exploration in sumeru is around 38% and in fontaine everything's already almost 50% and i barely explore fontaine as of now. The characters are pretty good in my opinion, except dori and deyha. Everyone else is pretty good and I'm a wanderer main who likes to kill everything. Layla is my savior (and my first main. I started genshin when yelan was released.) I think sumeru's biggest flaws is time consumption, and puzzles that you need to go on youtube to solve. Like i thought inazuma was bad but sheesh. All in all, i definitely really liked it despite that stuff. I just wish it was a bit easier? In order of favorite nations it would be 1.fontaine (obvs we know why it's so good. Furina.) 2. Liyue (relaxing yet hard enough when it has to be plus has the best meta chars) 3.sumeru (confusing but pretty and has a good story quest) 4.mondstadt (too easy but thats to be expected) 5. Sumeru's story is actually interesting and thought provoking. The execution? Terrible. There was no reason for Sumeru to be as big as it was. Hoyo always had the issue with the structure. The main character (Lumine, Aether) does something and you as the player can use critical thinking skills to figure out. "Aww, they did that because they miss their sibling." And you know who's right behind you to tell you exactly how you feel? Paimon. I thought the repeated day quest was creepy and unsettling. I know the writers can legit write. The problem? They never seem allowed to have the players be able to think for themselves. Paimon is there to ask unnecessary questions for things you can figure out yourself. And said questions, doesn't even drive the story any further than "Huh, a lot of this stuff might be because of that island in the sky." Call me bias, but damn do I hate Paimon. I feel so bad for her ENG actor who had to actually change the way they voice her because it was literally damaging their voice box. Yes, I'm not kidding. And all of that? For useless dialogue that won't let you critically think things out. That definetely doesn't help the story in Sumeru at all. Nothing but pointless dialogue instead of letting players get to the point. That is the pointless amount of cutscenes and watching characters move from one end of a space to another other than to stretch out the time.

I mean, gacha games tend to have their 'mascot' characters, and Paimon isn't the most annoying I've ever seen, I'm sure it's a way to reduce costs by having one voice actress voice her instead of having two on standby for each of the siblings. Some of the banter is charming, some of it is annoying and kind of insults the player's intelligence, but her voice doesn't annoy me at all, because I chose JP voices as a qualified weeb is meant to do. I'd have to turn my card in if I chose English for any game that's 'anime styled'.

The game is clearable with any character. Only Spiral Abyss isn't. Sumeru was a big step up from the other regions before in almost all aspects. I'd say most importantly in fleshing out the characters writing in the archon quest and not rushing it either. I enjoyed the exploration of Sumeru a lot. Both the Aranyaka quest and all of the underground desert maze stuff didn't really bother me. I'd say I even liked it. But I do agree that the desert definitely overstayed its welcome. I was expecting more lush forests in the nation of the plant element. As for Fontaine, I haven't been enjoying it as much as I did Sumeru. But maybe I'm just weird.

Literally in all the areas that were released. It never bothered me, but I’ve seen many complaining about it Oh well, now it’s done. Hopefully they release a forest one soon 😂

I think people exaggerate how bad sumeru desert is. The only bad thing about desert i would say is not having a underground map but even that i would say i am 50/50. Pyramids being a puzzle is a gimmick. It being confusing i am 90% sure that they intended to do but it failed in execution as it was not liked by people majority. But the biggest disagreement is desert being empty. It was i think best way they could have made it. They surely intended to do that and I would say they also executed it right. Large areas just filled with sand nothing else in sight was kind of nice mechanic. But the thing is that is only one part of the region, the pyramid region. Everywhere else there is always something to do. Mountains, houses, dead trees, hidden villages, robots, storms. I think people only have problem with the desert area because it is brown which is not that vibrant. Everywhere else is green with very littile variation to the green and the difference in the theme of the region. Same as desert. Look at mondstad's big tree area and stromterror area. One is flat and nothing mich in between while other is lot of things with with one central focus. In sumeru the pyramid region is like the tree part of mondstad and the tornado part is like stromterror part. I cannot say why people say desert was bad. Because there is a lot of variation in them and maybe the pyramid update was so annoying that it ruined all the other parts of desert.

personally for me, the quest chain with Aranara was the best part. I fell in love with those little creatures instantly, I loved getting to know their culture and learning their importance to Sumeru's ecosystem. I know the whole ordeal was quite long, I myself completed the whole thing, including hidden quests and finding all of 70+ Aranaras scattered across the jungle, maybe in a span of few weeks, but I enjoyed every moment of it, and honestly now Sumeru feels empty without them, even though you can find Aranaras in Vanarana, still doesn't feel the same

My fav region, even tho Fontaine will probably take first place, so far it's really good. Loved exploring, honestly I enjoyed desert way more than jungle. Idk why, jungle just felt annoying to me, I find it confusing. And achon quest was the best, especially after dissapointing Inazuma, which was just a hot mess (but at least scenery was nice). Also we got so much interesting lore, King Deshret is probably one of my fav parts of the whole game, lore wise and I hope he will get more of him in a future. Jeht's storyline was also amazing. Aranara, well, I agree that one could be shorter, even when you take time, it's just not that fun. So Sumeru personally is top, for me. For characters, majority of my 90 lvl are also from Sumeru, so... Yeah.

Hmmmm I’m kinda shocked to see these comments. I hated Inazuma and I was so tired of it so Sumeru was a breath of fresh air. And the desert was so much fun for me. It was so different from the other regions. It was confusing but if you can do it in coop it’s so enjoyable just running around getting lost and trying to figure out what to do together. Some things were kind of impossible but I loved the desert overall and have very fond memories of it. Fontaine hasn’t captivated me yet… I don’t feel particularly motivated to explore. I like the underwater enough but I still find it a bit clunky and farming the abberrants for Neuvi made me burned out from it fast. I hate the combat down there. And I don’t get the puzzles yet.

Yes, there was no guide on them (in the game itself anyway, I used the Genshin Impact Interactive World Map) and you can't collect them before you become friendly with the main Aranara quest because they all run and hide from you on sight. :'D

I actually agree with the premise of the video, Sumeru was actually disappointing as a region. The Archon quest was phenomenal, but I expected much more of the region itself. The desert was seriously too much and too boring to explore already, and then they decided to expand it, seriously? Why didn't they expand the jungle part which was more lively and fun to explore, or crazy idea, create a new and more creative sub-area? I'm one of those people you mention thst jumped into Fontaine for fresh air without even completing exploration of Sumeru, exploring the desert feels like a chore so I never felt like doing it. And I actually agree that the character roster was disappointing. Yes, there are a few that are good but for example Nahida shouldn't count since Archons are good in general. Besides, we're talking about being disappointing in the sense that we expected so much more about Sumeru, and what we got wasn't that good actually.

I still feel a bit bad that I don’t quite understand the “bad” parts of Dehya, even after I’ve had her for this long and currently on the road to getting her up to 90, I do hear what people say and I do take it into consideration, but, i haven’t really experienced any horrible or bad problems, she’s honestly my best Pyro user and she plays pretty well with my current team of Raiden, Nahida, and Kokomi. That is just me though, and I know if everyone is taking about how bad she is, then I must 100% be missing something, all I know is the day I got her, i started to focus on Pyro more in my team comps, because she was able to deliver extremely well compared to my other Pyro users, granted, I probably didn’t build them correctly to begin with, but, in the same breath, I don’t know the luck involved in building Dehya to do the damage output she can do, while also taking a very minimal amount of damage when using her Skill and Burst. I am curious to know what others think though, so, anything I might be missing would be helpful to learn or know

I think if sumeru released with underground maps from the start it would have been a lot better but honestly the region as a whole was very nice. The main thing that killed the region fs was the 3.5 region (big swirly desert region). It was just increadibly boring and all of the world quests were boring and predictable. In every single world quest in the desert region the whole plot is just us or Jeht getting betrayed which makes it really funny but at the same time boring ofc. After the 3.5 desert even though the last desert area was pretty good, everyone just didnt really care about it since the previous one was horrible

This was a good video. There are some points I agree with and others not so much. I'm gonna go in reverse. I totally get and understand everyone's stance on Dehya. Hell, as someone who has her C0R1, I too desperately wanted her to be a DPS. Thing is, she isn't. That isn't her role. Trying to pigeon hole her into a role her kit isn't built to be doesn't magically make her a DPS. I know, Yoimiya was the last Pyro DPS we got and it was already a year and a half since she came out, but Hoyo didn't plan for Dehya to be the next Pyro DPS. This should've been expected since the x.5 patch of every version always debuts a character that uses the roster of the next version to actually shine. Eula needed Raiden for the two-in-one Electro application and universal battery. Yae Miko needed pretty much all of the Dendro 5 stars to make her kit really function as intended. Dehya needed Lyney to come out and be the Pyro DPS that centered around mono-Pyro to actually have more use. Could her kit be improved, I still think so. It doesn't change the fact that people are starting so see where Hoyo wanted her to be though. Outside of Dehya though, I'm confused. The point of this section is the Sumeru characters are bad. If that's the case, then why was Tighnari excused, Nilou was good for something out of her niche(?), Nahida carries Dendro, Wanderer is just a good Anemo hypercarry and Alhaitham was also good? That's majority of the 5 star cast. Why would we hear anyone singing Cyno's praises if most of the community already deem him mediocre? If investing into him would give him some viability, then how is he bad if that's what you have to do for most DPS characters? The point with him was that his personal damage was lessened because he'd be triggering hyperbloom in his burst. Alhaitham doesn't have that struggle because he can't trigger hyperbloom. Such is the pain of Electro. Tbh, when it comes to 4 stars, they'll inevitably suffer from being 4 stars simply due to the stat disparity. Candace can work and probably will work more once Furina is out, Layla is a good shielder, and Faruzan is Anemo Gorou(both are amazing supports but only when you get them to C6 before that they're just okay). I don't talk about Dori cause I can't make sense of what she's meant to do. Collei is just a nice introduction to Dendro-hence her Dendro Amber label and Spiral Abyss availability. I didn't think the Desert was ass. It was painful, yes and trying to remember how to get around was two tasks and a half, but that was because I couldn't tell where the ever loving fuck I was going. Now that the map is there, I can adequately tell what to do and how to do it cause I know where to go. In fact, the major flaw with the underground map for me is when a map is completely layered 100% on itself-I'm looking at you Fortress of Meropide. Telling which floor is which and the elevation you're on relative to that has caused me more headaches than the desert ever did. The world quests being long-specifically the Aranyaka, that was never supposed to be a thing to speed run. It was supposed to make the mess of the rainforest have some order while you took that patch to explore it. The 76 Aranara would also be another thing you'd get to once you continue exploring. They weren't particularly hard to find. I will say, since Inazuma, they've had many world quests tied to unlocking the exploration of an area. Yashiori, Seirai, and Tsurumi Islands all had WQs to complete first. Enkanomiya was similar and the Chasm wanted you to do quests with the Lumenspar group to level that up. I probably should've remembered that going into Fontaine cause I've stalled on World Quests and fucked up some basic beats because of it. Now I'm quick to do them first so I can enjoy exploring later. I'mma watch more of your videos and see if I wanna subscribe 🤣

Yup Sumeru is where I finally threw in the towel and gave up on playing Genshin. The story was ridiculous with pages and pages of non-stop dialogue, you get bombarded with 50 quests at the same time then some of them have progression locked because "character is busy" and the map with all the underground paths was just confusing. That's when I realized Genshin devs were out to completely siphon all of your time and energy into progressing their game and that's not what I signed up for.

I wouldn't necessarily say he's "fun to play" but he helped me at that time. But now that I actually got characters who are fun to play (Lyney, Yelan and Neuvillette) I can now bench him forever. I think Sumeru wasn't that bad overall. Im a recent player, started only this year and kinda waited the Fontaine update with the map to start really exploring the desert underground. So I don't know your frustration, I wasn't affected by it much... BUT Im still very salty about it. Locking area and puzzle behind a big world quest ? TERRIBLE. I start exploring, cannot grab this dendrocullus who's RIGHT THERE in front of me.. but I need an old a** stone keycard sh*t to activate the elevator ??? Lock the all pyramid plz, and tell me to do the quest first, do not give me hopes and then close the door to my face like bruh... Thats what ruinned the desert to me, it was sooo crap. The Aranara quest was also a**... I know people love it, but 8hours unvoice world quest is terrible. (I have ADHD, I can't read that much with the same music in loop in the background. I get bored very quickly) It could had been the whole archon quest at this point. I log in genshin, play this quest for hours, and when I logged out, I was still not finished... For 3 days... So I endded up skipped most of it. I was so happy not to see the aranaras again. Even tho some of my friends are in love with them, I just don't get it. I forgot what was the point of it, except having a text saying this random NPC got a vision. I don't really care either because in the big lore of genshin it doesn't matter much at all. So what was the point ?? And I say that as someone who started playing after everyone. I had no hype what-so-ever about this region and quest, went completly blind. Only with my friends saying how Sumeru was so cool and beautifull.. Just to get disapointed and burnout of it. On the other hand I almost 100% fontaine and with the current 4.2 update Im gonna keep it up. It's very smooth to explore and even tho some Area are quest lock. Th quest does't take 8hours to complet, just an hour or two, you do the exploration at the same time so you never have to come back to thos place again with a completed stone keycard sh*t... Hoyoverse learned about their mistake at least.
