This week we decided to become locals and headed into the Scottish wilderness to wild camp.
While we wait for they keys to our brand new house, we ditched van life and hiked into the mountains to spend the night taking only what we could carry on our backs.
It was a little stormy and it wasn't the best night sleep we've ever had but getting to experience wild camping in scotland is a bucket list tick off even if it did go a little wrong.
I'm pretty sure where we slept was legal - but always make sure to check before you head out. Roll on sleeping in a house with a roof!

Love your ideas, house designs but remember the more glass the greater the potential to lose heat. After living in the south of Germany for a while ( best quality windows ever), where the winters are similar to the north of Scotland . I totally recommend you consider triple glazed- thermal windows ect . Without them you’ll feel the cold even through double glazed! Means spending big bucks but you’ll reap the benefits next winter 👍

I had exactly the same thought. highly suggest that your glassed area be a small deck and then the main living space separated even more inside that to create a solarium effect!

I was thinking exactly the same (Austrian resident). Whilst Scotland probably doesn’t get as cold as here or Southern Germany, it won’t be far off at times. Great idea on the open/closed deck area. That would work for all seasons. 👍 😊

Timber cladding Craig. Douglas Fir is a good structural timber but for exterior cladding Western Red Cedar (1st choice) or Larch would be much better. Both are grown and available in Scotland 👍

So, I renovated our basement to create a 3 bedroom apartment for my MIL this summer. I got the big trades in for electrics, plumbing, plasterwork etc, my advice based on my experience is this, serious jobs, get someone in BUT work with someone you get a vibe with, someone you feel that knows you and gets what your plan is. The rest, RU-vid it, give it a bash, what’s the worst that can happen??? I learnt so many skills this summer on my renovations. Now I can build walls, tile, grout, decorate, build kitchens, build glass brick walls, refurb furniture, fill holes in walls, connect aerials, do basic plumbing. You guys can do this, it’s hard work but you can do it.

You guys are just what the doctor ordered to calm my spirit and bring joy and peace to my life. Can't give what you don't have left. Thank you both so much. Loved your duck friends by the lake. Unlike you guys, your audience got the view in the warmth and comforts of home. I've no doubt you'll be expert hikers in no time. When considering renovations and windows, keep an eye on the sky for East/West facing windows and views. Especially in winter and summer when too hot or too cold might come into play. Lots of information on that for earth shelter homes, but same designs can be applied to traditional homes. Expecially homes like yours with massive block exterior walls. The bifold doors look great, however consider the cost versus how often you will actually be able to use them in the highlands. We live in Perthshire and decided against them because of the cold and the midgies

Lol thought on Renos. For the addition, you'll save a boatload of cost and headache if you keep it to a room that doesn't require plumbing, so a bedroom or living room for instance. If you put the kitchen there, it's a whole bit kettle of fish with plumbing, gas lines, lots of power of different levels, etc. If you can, keep the kitchen where it is to spare yourself the headache, unless you really wanna go in full boar in cost and headache.

Y'all are just so darn funny! I've been on many a cold camping trip, too. Learned to take two rectangle bags that can be zipped together, with individual fleece liners. That way, the combined body heat keeps you both, warmer!

Watching and listening to you two is joyous!! (Even when you're suffering 😘) We were wild camping on what seemed in the dark to be the side of a cliff! We heard animals in the night and to me it was wolves😮 we awoke in the morning and we were in the orchard of someone's garden, 🤣🤣🤣the kind lady brought us coffee and croissants 😀💜💜💜 I'll guess microbiologist🤔

As long as you can boil water, you should bring rubber hot water bottles with you. You could boil lake water and they stay warm for quite a while, plus not heavy to carry. This was fun, you’re making me grateful I’m in a warm house. Can’t wait to see you in front of your own fireplace, in your new house! ♥️

For the next time you go out, here are some tips to staying warm from a backpacker: - bring a different sleeping outfit (base layers, socks) to change into as soon as you get to camp. Staying in the sweaty hiking clothes from the day makes you so much colder - Bring a Nalgene or other water bottle, and fill it with warm water before bed to cuddle to make you warm. Be careful not to sweat. - don’t wear cotton, bring fleece or quick drying material - don’t eat where you sleep. You should store food at least 100m away to avoid critters. Hope you enjoy your next trip!

I feel like wearing wool everything really makes a difference too. I've been out in the woods with friends and the people who brought synthetic clothes were begging to borrow our wool sweaters and socks. Performs so much better even if it's damp outside.

Also winter tents don’t have thermal lining. That summer tent seems heavy but fine. I guess double walled vs mesh might be slightly warmer.

It's not much of a hike and anything but epic, it's honestly less than an hour's walk along a very nice wheelchair friendly flat track, it's a heavily visited little loch because of how the water looks, it's social media like bait for influencers these days. Sure, they might have took a little branch off path, probably to make it seem difficult to their middle-class friends down south but to a local, it's actually just a wee stroll.

My husband and I have planned a 1000 miles round trip wild camping around Scotland next July. Watching this makes us even more excited, hopefully it’ll be a tad warmer when we go 🤣 be sure to give us a knock if you see a little tipi tent in the wilderness, the kettle will always be on the boil! 🤍

I would advise a head midgie net especially if you go up the west coast in July😂 Avon Skin So Soft is fab to repel the midgies. Have a fabby time😊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
