Nile Rodgers (who was part of Chic) later said that the song was directed at how Studio 54 would casually reject "undesirable people" from entering, with "freak out" being a sanitized version of "f*** off"

Yes! The DJ's were playing their music at Studio 54 but when they wanted to get in the club, they weren't allowed into the club, so Nile & Bernard Edwards (the bassist) wrote it. "Good Times" is another dance banger from CHIC. Cannot tell you how important legendary producer Nile Rodgers is - Produced Bowie, Diana Ross, Duran-Duran, Steve Winwood, Madonna, you name it!
@SimonePhoenix

That's right, Rubell & Schrager wouldn't let them into the club, though they had an invite from GRACE JONES! Yep, they were mad & back at their apartment not far from there they were playing their guitars & screaming out the window for Studio 54 to "F*** OFF". The tune started to take form, they changed the chorus's famous chant to highlight a dance that was huge back then, "The Freak" & the rest is music history. Respect to you & yours.

This was a monster hit for Chic! Yes, the Freak was a dance in the late seventies/early eighties! That’s the magnificent legendary Nile Rogers on guitar and he went on to produce acts like Duran Duran, David Bowie, Madonna, Sister Sledge, Daft Punk, and many more! They also had big hits with I Want Your Love, Everybody Dance, and Good Times which was sample by the Sugarhill Gang for their mega hit Rapper’s Delight without permission! Chic sued and won! ❤️❤️

"Studio 54" was the hottest nightclub in the country...located in late 1970s New York city. Come Friday into the weekend ppl dressed to the nines and waited with baited breath to be let in. The owner would come out and hand pick who would get in. If u didn't get picked..you swallowed your pride and waited for the next weekend. Celebs from every walk of life couldn't wait to be seen at "54".

The rest of us went to "Elaine's", "Limelight", "Monster" (Greenwich Village) but everyone wanted to get into Studio 54 (not me though, too pretentious & I refused to beg at the rope - plus I was underage anyway). But from documentaries I saw they had 2 VIP rooms - VIP & VVIP. The VVIP were Margaret Trudeau (Justin's mom), Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Liza Minnelli, Bianca & Mick Jagger - even Jean Stapleton (Edith - All in the Family) were regulars. Underaged celebs like Michael Jackson, Brooke Shields & Tatum O'Neal were regulars there too.

CHIC in its original line-up was a huge act, but in the later 80s Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wanted to go behind the scenes for production. They knew their stuff. But there was a clamor for them to perform and they would take the act out for tours. On April 17, 1996, the original line-up did its last performance at The Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. The whole concert is available on RU-vid in segments and individual tunes. Bernard Edwards, the bassist, was suffering from the flu and running a very high temperature but still went on. That night after the show he retired to his hotel room to recover from the show and try to get better. He never woke up. He died in his sleep, a tragedy to all CHIC fans. I would recommend their performance f "Good Times" as the group incorporated the Sugar Hill Gang's rap into the song. Good fun!
