The Sopranos follows New Jesey mob boss Tony Soprano. In today's video, I wanted to discuss whether Tony made the right choice in sending Feech La Manna back to prison, whether it was the right thing for Tony to get rid of Feech, and whether Feech's apology, when he says he'll learn and he still thinks of Tony as a kid, was genuine. So let's discuss!

He was bad for business and Tony wasn’t going to allow it. Fool me once,shame on you/Fool me twice, shame on me. Moving on turf without asking and then not kicking up twice is not a good sign. Everyone has mentioned that Feech was a legend and was feared. Something that wasn't said about Dimeo, Johnny Boy, Corrado, Richie, etc. Most likely Feech was some ultra macho, alpha male type, and his actions/personality/behaviour reflected that. He was also similar to Paulie, a now older guy, with no wife and no kids.... Beansie correctly stated that all Paulie has in his world is his image... Feech is the same, he only has his image, thus he made sure it is maintained.

I think it was evident Feech didn't like Tony, and probably thought he should be dead from robbing the card game. And held clear resentment towards him over it. When he told the story, he presented it like he was over it but was trying to humiliate Tony when telling the story. I don't think he was going to change, not just because the times changed. Because he didn't like or respect Tony. He apologized, because Tony is the boss and he does respect tradition. But he can't help himself. Like leopard can't change its spots. Feech's dislike for Tony wasn't going to either.

“Nipping it in the bud” with Feech was maybe the wisest thing Tony did. And while it ended up being his defiance in the Tony B. situation that led to his ultimate demise... if Feech had stuck around, the unrest from within his own ranks would’ve probably done them in. Richie wasn’t as well-liked as Feech. He made his own bed with the whole Beansy ordeal. Feech could have caused major problems for Tony... far beyond anything Richie or Ralph ever did.

I personally thought Tony made a mistake with Feech, he over-reacted a little bit because with Richie he under-reacted, so he tried to not make the same mistake but from my understanding, Feech wasn't going to betray Tony, sure he had problems taking orders and getting up to date with how things are now, but the way he said "I'll learn" sounded real like he had a hard time bowing his head but he did it, there's no real evidence that he was gonna go the 'coup' rout like Richie, and btw Tony was also disrespectful, he would try to assert dominance when they were hanging out, acting all insecure about jokes and stuff, that was too pathetic, to me it was part of the Theme in the last two seasons that Tony is completely paranoid and over-reacting and pushing his most trusted men away which led to his downfall, he pushed away Chris, he shit on Silvio even, his last straw to go against Feech was that slow-mo scene where he's shitting on Feech's jokes and Feech is looking at him with Disgust, but that look was about them hanging out and him not respecting the old timer enough, it wasn't the look of 'I'm going to back stab you' but anyway, they definitely left it up to interpretation
@blackfox4138
@blackfox4138 Год назад
I think the thing that sealed Feech's fate was his remark on Johnny Sack. While New York and Jersey weren't open enemies just yet, their alliance was tense at best. And the moment Tony knew that Feech, a man who wouldn't bow down easily to him, was working with the other team, that's when he couldn't risk letting Feech stick around.

Tony sent Feech back to prison because in this part of the show when Feech set up the heist to steal all the cars from the wedding of the mob Doctor Tony knew, Tony already told Feech he a friend of mine meaning he off limits. Feech ignore that and didn't anyway when Tony got the call from the doctor about the heist Tony was outrage until Feech told him, Johnny Sac connected him with a guy where he can sell the cars. I think that Feech was still angry at Tony about the card game robbery. Think about it. Some young punks rob you and get away with it? Then they are praised for the robbery? It probably tanked Feech's reputation and took away a lot of respect he had with his contemporaries. Tony and Jackie got saved because of Tony's father and Richie who were the underboss and capo of their family at the time. As feech said, they would've been marked for death if they weren't connected. I would've been upset at that as well and demanded compensation but unfortunately I doubt that would've happened due to Tony's father's position in the family. Feech literally got screwed and he couldn't do anything about it. Then he goes to jail and it festers only to come out and see that the person whom you hate a lot is now the boss. It's like a comedy and a tragedy.

What people don't realize is that sending Feech back to the can was the cruelest thing Tony could do. Imagine being an old timer and getting through that whole damn 20 year sentence keeping your mouth shut but you had something to look forward to. Getting out, getting back to living life, kicking ass, and chewing bubble gum. When he goes back in for the next stint there's probably not even a glimmer of hope of getting back out again. Even IF that could happen and it's a huge IF..... Feech is going to be too damn old to do much of anything by the time he gets back again. I can't possibly imagine taking that bus ride back into the can taking one last look at the outside knowing your own family set you up and the walls start closing in.

No big deal, but just a couple things I’d like to point out. Feech was actually first mentioned in Season 2 when Richie Aprile told Tony “I’m the one who saved you from the hit parade, when you and my kid brother stuck up Feech La Mana’s card game. Feech was made before the electric light if it wasnt for me you 2 would have caught a viscous beating.” Or something along those lines. Also, I don’t think Feech was Tony B’s original best friend from prison because when Feech and Tony B are first introduced, Tony B tells Feech “I just missed you in prison by 2 weeks.” Sorry if my quotes aren’t exactly accurate. This is just what I remember off the top of my head. Great video by the way, I know I’m like a year late lmao.

Then richie says "when you robbed feech lamanas game, if i hadnd intervene, you guys would have caught a serious beaaaating" Then silvio jumps in and says "yeah, and if it wasnt because of tony's dad's connections as well"

Feech kept saying “in my day”, in his day if he was so smart he wouldn’t have went to jail. When he gets out he does petty things like beating up Pauly’s landscaper. I don’t think he was an asset at all, he was out of control. If he would have put his ego aside and listened to Tony I believe he would have eased on in and would have reestablished himself again. He just didn’t have the patience or temperament.

11:02 he wasnt trying to be nice to chris and benny! He was just trying to win them over to get info on anything he could get his hands on. And to offer them something to drink is an absolute insult to a made man. Both Chris and Benny know that they should be offered drinks of choice.

It was such a natural payback for Feech to rob the Doctor daughter's wedding. As a kid Tony shit on his card game, so in return he shits on Tony's game by targeting one of his 'pigeons'.

Feech was a sick puppy. Tony had enough problems to deal with already. He had a few options. He could send Feech back to prison, k!ll him, or turn him into some kind of a cripple or a vegetable.

I really think he was innocent and capable of learning cause I think this storyline with Feech is showing us something. Tony and the other guys all fetishize the old days (around Tony's childhood, Junior and Pauly's prime, the boom time for LCN after Prohibition and WWII cuts, etc) yet essentially all the characters that best represent that era like Junior, Carmine Sr, Phil, etc, are shown to be annoying, too old school for the current generation, and often times shown as broken down and weak like Terminator Bacala, Junior, Joe DiMaggio and his gang, or corny asl like Richie, etc. The show constantly shows us how flawed that hindsight is and how poorly they actually remember "back in the day". If the movie does nothing else, it shows us that Chase really wanted us to understand how different their memories were from the reality and how much of the gossip they heard was inaccurate, even going out of his way to write subtle differences into scenes we saw or heard about in the show. Some people seemed to view it as fan service but I always thought it was more significant even if it maybe wasn't the most creative way to demonstrate it. I don't think Feech was an idiot by any stretch and definitely think he knew making nice was in his best interest, but I always thought there was some level sincerity in what he said in his apology as well as innocence in all the things we see and that Tony views as evidence that he needs to go. In the end I think Feech could've been a potential threat but never would have stepped too far outta bounds and it was just a clash of old school vs new more than any real issue of betrayal. They say they love the old school but when they see it they don't like it. Feech seemed to respect the title but was just sore over the robbery, that he lost all those years and came back to kids running the show, all that, doesn't make him dangerous though. So no, I don't think it was necessary and I think killing him woulda been the kinder move but I also think that was probably the point.

You say he was mentioned as early as season 3, but he was actually brought up in season 2 - Ritchie Aprile mentioned it to Tony when Tony asked him “when have you ever looked out for me?” And Ritchie mentions them sticking up feech’s card game.

3:24 so this part "yeah yeah he was my best buddy" I had the impression this was typical of him to speak this way in order to remain tight lipped. Many criminals act this way irl so they can always deny everything by default. In this case, his shiftiness still brought out an honest statement. I thought maybe he was fond of Tony B inside for a time, tended to forget as he adjusted to the outside, and then when meeting Tony B they became friendly again like two soldiers meeting up

That wedding car theft would have been a major score. They're hauling away dozens of cars worth $100,000+ each. That's like millions of dollars in one nights work that would've brought into the family. (and Ralph brags about construction bringing in $3 million *a year*)

But pissing off that many rich people with connections is a bad move, especially since many of those cars have tracking devices built into them. The level of heat that would come down on Tony was not worth the reward. In the end, Feech still thinks it's the 60s and 70s, when the mob could get away with almost anything.

You couldn't trust someone like Feech any more then you could Richie Aprile, both were Captains, or major made men when Tony was just a punk ass mobster. Both of those guys seen themselves as more deserving of being the boss over Tony, I wouldn't have trusted either one of them and you couldn't run a Mob family with these two guys.
@hezekiaB
@hezekiaB Год назад
You missed the point. The story arc around Feech is meant to foreshadow what goes on with Tony B. There isn’t a single instance of an old school mobster getting out of a long-term stint in the can on the Sopranos and their story ending well. Every single one of them, including Phil, comes out with the world having moved on, yet feeling they’re owed for doing their time quietly. They also still think of the men who are now authority figures in the mob as the kids they were when they went away and don’t show them proper respect. This is meant to highlight Tony’s paradox of constantly pining for the way things were and lamenting that the “kids these days” aren’t any good, while he’s doing better than almost anyone in the history of the mob and the only people capable of working in the modern mob system are the kids that were brought up in it. Whenever Tony has an old school guy come back to him they inevitably cannot function under the way things now work. Yet what is Tony to do? Young guys face prison time still, and if they see that the reward for doing 20 years and not talking is a bullet in the head when you get out they’ll never choose to do the time and stay quiet. Tony B himself talks quite a bit this season about the “convict mentality” making it so that prison is the only place a convict can function, and while he says it like he’s attempting to overcome his subconscious has already acknowledged that he cannot. So when Tony says “did I learn nothing from Richie Aprile? Nip it in the bud” he should be extending that lesson onto his dealings with his cousin as well, but his high sentimentality mode keeps him from doing so until it’s too late. The answer is to let these guys retire, as Angelo should have and Ponticorvo tried to do the next season (possibly to evade pressure from the fbi to rat on his friends) or to become legitimate citizens as Tony B attempted before getting pulled back in to Tony’s then delight. Additionally you missed a pretty funny double meaning in the exchange between Feech and Adriana. Adriana asks if they need anything else and Feech looks her up and down saying “anything more and one of the kids will come out”. He’s slyly saying that she’s a woman, meant for two things: serving and sex. So since she already did the one, if she does the other “one of the kids will come out”. Hence Chrissy’s death stare, even though he refers to Adriana this way as well so it only takes Feech saying “my compliments” to defuse his anger. He doesn’t care about his fiancé being considered an object, he’s just possessive and is happy Feech acknowledges his possession of her. This show is a masterpiece of complexity in plain sight.

If they make another prequel like Saints, I hope they play out the scene of the robbery of Feech's card game. That seems to be a pivotal point in the rise of Jackie Aprile and Tony Soprano. It would be a great scene if they did it right.

This is one of many moments where i was reminded of how loathsome Tony was as a person. Regardless of how he felt about Feech, he was a respected part of the family who did hard time and was in the later stages of life. He could have found a way to keep him busy and not feel belittled without sending him back to prison. It was such an immature way to deal with knowing he wasn't respected by Feech. Feech swallowed his pride and apologized, even though he felt it was demeaning to have to obey Tony. In spite of how it made him feel, he still did what he had to do because he understood he had no choice. There's no way i could ever respect Tony if i were part of his crew after that.

Tony understood that he was gonna _definitely_ have problems with Feech again....and that Preventing a problem from even becoming a problem in the first place is 100 times better than trying to solve/resolve a problem that you had done allowed to manifest in the first place. And Tony had to do it the _way_ that he did it because Feech was popular/ people liked him (unlike as what happened with Ralph). Even though nobody liked Ralph......Ralph was a CAPTAIN that Tony whacked over a horse......and people were talking about it! (There would've been negative repercussions if he would've whacked Feech)

Great episode this. I always felt a part of Feech understood that he had to adjust and i felt that his apology was half real but that ultimately a kooshty lap of honour for his retirement would never be enough as he would definitely get back to his old groove. Richie Aprile mentioned Feech in season two. Richie said that Feech was made before the electric bulb was invented. He also tried to claim credit for saving a young Tony from Feech's wrath. This was after Tony and Jackie Aprile senior robbed Feech's card game. When I first watched 'The Sopranos' I thought the late great Robert Loggia was OTT. But, I was gravely mistaken. His performance was nuanced and sensitive. For example his refusal to join in the sycophantic laughter at Tony's less than hilarious remark. The slow motion replay of Feech's face was wonderful acting. RIP Robert Loggia & James Gandolfini.
