I think people treat this game as a meme because of the SEVERE lack of customization (also with the Ultimate Animal collection, NINE species of agouti) but it has its charm with golf carts and, for the time, highly realistic animals. It has its charm, but ultimately it's a 4/10.

What you're neglecting in this review of sorts is that the version you're playing is the polished up one, with many shortcomings ironed out. The South American and Australian animals were largely added in a DLC, and the game initially had the ludicrous "Zoo limit" restriction, which prevented your zoo from exceeding a certain size (a fraction of the ingame map). Not to even mention that the game had two versions, one with far less animals for older consoles. You're playing something with way more redeeming features than what people got when it was released, and I really don't feel like the game really deserves all that much praise, considering how little it actually managed to improve.

Honestly, the mini-exhibits were a great idea, since they actually included a bunch of animals that almost never appear in these games (birds, small mammals, most reptiles).

I was the definition of mixed when this came out. As a massive animal nerd I wouldn't complain about a new zoo game, it looked stunning for 2013 and still holds up pretty well and my favorite almost all of the mini habitat animals were things completely new to the franchise like snakes and flying birds. On the other hand tho I didn't like it was xbox exclusive (I personally have never owned one) didn't like the animal roster relied a lot on subspecies (having bears or antelope as general families are fine but like leaf said all the weird jaguar subspecies was unnecessary) and of course the fact the habitats were pre built and could only add a few items in a few places, works for a spider tank in planet zoo but not a massive elephant habitat. So yea over all very mixed bag for me

I feel like as a Zoo game, Zoo Tycoon 3 works, But as a Zoo Tycoon game it doesn't work, And I would have loved for it to be under a different title, Planet Zoo is a masterpiece, So is Zoo Tycoon 2, And the first is awesome too.

Fun fact that you didn't mention in the video: When the game was first made, it did not have the South American and Australian animals. The animals were added a few yeard later in an upgrade called the ultimate animale collection. Frontier did not work on updating the game. UAC was developed by another studio called Asobo. Another fact is that before creating ZT xbox microsoft was workingwith frontier on a zoo game called Microsoft zoo. That project of course got canceled and got replaced with ZT xbox.

This game leaves a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth if im honest. It has it's great point like you mentioned, and I loved the ability to breed rare color variations. That being said I felt overall limited in this game. I liked having muliple of one species but there were so few different animals. Also (at least in the original version) I couldn't build a very big zoo after a little while on sandbox mode you hit full capacity even when you don't have a lot of exhibits. As a person who likes to build big exhibits and watching the animals, I was disapointed I couldn't create a big safari. Unless I used the big enclosure which used a lot of space, I would be stuck with small herds or prides, an even with big ones I had to constantly sell the older ones so I could get more babies. In the older games I could expand the exhibit but I couldn't do that here. You said it's fun to just come in and look at the animals and that's true it is...at first. This is most noticiable with the lemurs and infact you show it. If you watch you'll notice it did the same animation loop twice and that is the only animation it has. The stock position of these animals is sleeping and that one play animation. Its great animation but after awhile its kinda disappointing and you start noticing it with the other animals too. Zoo Tycoon didn't have these amazing animations but your animals interacted with a lot more of their surroundings. Surrounding's that you are given a limited choice to begin with in this version. If this game was called Zookeeper Rumble or something I would say it's fine. But it's called Zoo Tycoon asking to be compared to the others and while this game is fun it just falls short to the originals creativity.

I was soooo excited when this came out. I tried it and just...couldn't figure out how to play, there was SO LITTLE for me to do. And I kept running into some kind of a conservation limit or something, can't quite remember, so I couldn't actually place new habitats. It was really strange and disappointing.

I remember when the base game was released in 2013 and the upgraded DLC in 2017. I picked up both shortly after release. I've always thought of this game as being alright for a short time but boy does it get boring fast lol. It doesn't help only two or three maps are unlocked in sandbox by default (a similar problem to JWE2 but on a larger scale). I've wanted to build an African zoo in this game for a while but never bothered with it as the map would take far too long to unlock.

I used to play this, and honestly there’s still a lot about it that I wish was added to Planet zoo. The massive amount of mini exhibit animals, the staff carts, and weirdly, the social media page in the game. When animals would breed and stuff, posts would be made in the game, and for some reason I really enjoyed it and how it made my zoo feel more realistic. The massive amount of mini exhibit animals was fantastic, though, and I wish planet zoo had more stuff like that

I feel that this game might be a good way to introduce younger players to the world of zoo simulation games, as it offers them the opportunity to design a zoo without the stresses of making sure enclosures have enough space, animals dying of illness and killing each other, etc. However, if you’re a zoo tycoon fan who enjoyed the customization of the previous games, then you will likely be disappointed. They definitely made some interesting choices with the animal roster, particularly with the exhibit animals that included a variety of obscure creatures like the agoutis and tamanduas you mentioned, king quails, sand goannas, fossas, numbats, and more, but at the same time many key zoo animals (zebras, leopards, cheetahs, wolves, penguins, ratites, giant pandas) were absent.

I just wish it had DLC similar to the old games. A Marine Mania and Dino Digs would have taken it further. They did Zoo Tycoon dirty here

I loved Zoo Tycoon for Xbox as a kid, and still do, especially the ultimate animal collection. I liked driving around on the buggy, interacting with the animals, and when I played the ultimate animal collection, I immediately tried getting rank 40 to unlock everything, and then I could build the zoo by deleting everything I had done to reach rank 40. 8/10, I would probably get an xbox solely for Zoo Tycoon. The only real complaint I have is having to unlock things via the franchise mode thing.

For me, the game "could" have been great. It had alot of nice stuff but for every good thing there were like 5 other things that could've been better. Alot of important animals are missing; Zebra, Penguins, Gorillas, Deer, Giant Pandas, Leopards, Wolves, Ostrich are all missing. Plus this game lacks alot of the customization that makes a zoo game. The only thing it has going for it is the pretty animation on the animals So for Zoo Tycoon Xbox my final score is 1.5 out of 5

I like the style/mechanics of the original zoo tycoon better than the 2nd...didn't even know there was a 3rd! It's interesting to look at the evolution, especially since planet zoo really went back to the management/customizable nature of the first game for inspiration. I do miss renaming a habitat Xanadu to unlock unicorns, or putting a mermaid statue in a tank to bring her to life...PZ needs some more free, whimsical content. Or just free. I'd take free.

That's basically why I enjoyed the game, just placing animals down and looking at them. Of course I was a bit younger at the time so I truly didn't know if it was a good game, I would just get excited to see the animals and of course I also grew up with Zoo Tycoon 2 even 1. But I got to say the variety of animals in the game was extremely nice with different sub species even having good looking chimps but it did have flaws and design choices I never understood, such as you being able to literally reach into a croc exhibit. But this game just did not give the freedom of a zoo game besides things here and there but even so you were limited. But mainly I just enjoyed the game for the animals.

This was one of the first games I preordered and boy was I pissed with the final product. ZT1 to me is a better park manager than 2 in the sense that it's fare more straightforward and simple,but you simply cannot deny how bonkers you can let your creativity go with ZT2,with mods,that is just amped up to the next level.

This game and Microsoft denied me access to Antelopes, the most Bullshit of exclusivity I've ever experienced. Antelopes were only accessible on the Xbox one, not the Xbox 360, and they never updated the 360 version when the Complete collection update came out.

I almost never gave park builders another chance after this game. If it wasn't for someone getting me Jurassic world evolution without asking me, I would have thought that a highly customizable park builder like zoo tycoon 2 just wasn't going to be made again.

I grew up with this game (with the upgrade ultimate animal collection) when I was a kid and for me that game was the top, with my friend I did crazy stuff with the buggy, the only problem of that game for me was that I couldn’t build the enclousures, I wanted also zoo tycoon 2 to do that but that game was too old and I needed a computer that could run it. Now there is finally planet zoo.

I watched your whole video and I'm still struggling to understand your praise of the gameplay. What is the gameplay? Just setting down habitats and walking around them? You said that not having the animal management works in its benefit, but without the animal management what is there to engage with? It doesn't even seem like a game at that point. Just a virtual walking simulator where you select what 3D animal models you want to look at. Just because the models happen to be pretty doesn't mean it is a good game.

This game is only good at one thing: it makes you glad that planet zoo exists :D I bought it and played for about a half hour and got bored after i saw every animal because you kinda cant do anything. Best part are the mini exhibits because they include some cool species. My recommendation to anyone who is thinking about buying it: if you wanna play it longer than a hour just buy planet zoo instead

RCT1 had the same sorta style that ZT1 had. They made 3D models and turned them into sprites to put it into the game. Theres an image of a fully zoomed in 3D model of the Miniature Train in RCT1 and it still looks beautiful. The 3D > sprite look is just.. *chefs kiss*

I played it, it truly wasn't that bad, to be fair I didn't have a pc yet so this was kinda my only option, but I still liked it, of course when I got Planet Zoo, it was over, if I had to find this game a use, you can build with friends, or just introduce your kid, or your younger siblings to a zoo experience.

It got better after updates. The number of guests being able to actually go down not just increase forever forcing you to build build build was much needed. And they fixed the pathing massively so you could CHOOSE where a path went. But it just lacks the fundamentals that made the older 2 popular. Sandbox/editable worlds are hard these days i get it. Original ZT and Minecraft get away with it because they look like crap. But if you're doing modular premade enclosures there's just no excuse why aquatic animals weren't in it. Not to mention all the other basic fundamental zoo animals that were missing. If Animal Crossing on the Switch can have indoor bug houses and aquariums you add stuff to there's no excuse.

the animal variety is good but don't forget that the exhibit animals act all the same but just with diffrent models and animations. and most of the animals like sun bears and grizzly bears are just skins. and do nothing different from each other.

I mean it wasn't bad, it's only issue was that it brought a lot of changes between it and zt2, which was already a well liked game It's like the Win7->Win8 transition Fixed things that didn't need to be fixed, cut species variety for subspecies variety, and cut part of the freedom that was well liked in zt2 Was it bad? No! Just like Win8 (by Win8 I probably mean 8.1 anyways, wtf is up with taking away the start menu) was a pretty good piece of software, but the change made people willingly stay behind because they preferred the former version Oh, and the game left pc players behind as it was console exclusive, so the platform that already watched Zoo Tycoon grow couldn't keep up with it anymore unless they owned an xbox Prior console versions were often small side games

I was a broke college student when ZT3 rolled out. I was so excited that I even borrowed money from my ex just to buy this game. So I guess I’ll never be able to tell how disappointed I was. This game almost broke my heart.

I owned the Complete collection of Zoo Tycoon when I was a kid I found it at my local Wal*Mart in the electronics section and I also owned the ultimate collection of Zoo Tycoon 2 for PC I love the graphics of Zoo Tycoon 2 more but it was so worth buying

Totally agree with the review, but theres one thing that bothers me: your gemsbok pronunciation🤣 The "G" in gemsbok is pronounced like the "ch" in Johann Sebastian Bach ...at least from what i know, if im wrong please correct me people!

imo it’s a 3/10. It’s honestly just a bad zoo builder. If it had jwe mechanics,(place down fence, place in enrichment and feeders, use terrain brush, put in animal) this game would’ve been 10 times better. Swapping out the ridiculous amount of subspecies for other distinct animals (zebra, bison, penguin, wolves, cheetah, gorillas, otters, old world monkeys etc) couldve been a gigantic fix for the Ultimate Collection, but they just decided to ignore what fans wanted. Only reason i found for replayability was breeding for coat mutations. For me the only thing that saves this game for me is nostalgia and the fact i’m a sucker for lions. All this game is to me is wasted potential that would’ve been better as a mobile game.

Y'know, TBCH, I would have been fine with the multiple-types-of-one-family thing if there was actually some variety. But there isn't. There's very few ways of customising your exhibits and half of the animal roster is locked into the mini-exhibit formats where they legit don't do anything aside wander (and tapirs did NOT need to be mini-exhibit animals).

You are not the only one you think Zoo Tycoon 1 is better than Zoo Tycoon 2. I enjoyed more ZT1 than ZT2! My points that ZT1 is superior is one you said: Art direction, yeah they are sprotes, but the sprites look like a real life zoo buildings. ZT2 in a way aged really bad, even with mods its the same. Also I hated ZT2 due the community had in its forums: teens with the hormone and the ego in the stratosphere.

Uh.... Yesn't? I mean the game isn't bad. Heck, I think premade exhibit issue is doable (I'd prefer to make my own but as a console game I can live with it). It's the lack of animal variety that brings this game down in my opinion. Only 8-10 major species actually do anything. The others are all preanimated screensavers basically, that can't do anything.

Even now, I'm still disappointed by this game. It had the potential to be so much more, but was basically treated and sold as a quick cash grab. I remember being thirteen or fourteen and just appalled by the severe lack of creativity and animal diversity, since I grew up playing all the earlier Zootycoon games for the vast majority of my childhood. Even JPOG had more creativity, and that's saying something. I'm genuinely surprised to learn that it had an update that introduced some new animals years after it's release, but sadly, it seems that it came far too late. I understand your review is looking at the few positives that this game had, you state them well, however, it's not enough to paint this game in a better light. Polish a turd, it's still just a turd. It's better if this game is left forgotten and abandoned.

I don't want to be mean and hey, you can enjoy ir and like it but... saying is different instead of bad for having zero animal care, that's way too much
