HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

From my understanding, that means the metal is almost, if not completely pure. I know gold and silver appear transparent during a pour when they are free of other metals. I'd assume that is the case for most metals. But then again, I have been wrong a time or two.

Regarding your circuit boards: Put them all in a tub filled with silver nitrate. Leave them in the sun for a couple of weeks. All the fingers will separate from the substrate. You'll have a bit of gold, aluminum, tin and copper.

I have to say: The amount of time it must take to tear machines like this down probably really drags out getting to the good part... But even more I appreciate the extra time it must take to _keep adjusting the camera_ for each and every closeup of an hours-long dismantling process.

I really liked the stripping down part of the video. Have you thought about getting a granulator for dealing with plastic coated wire? These are machines that strip and separate out. A bit more pricy than a wire stripper though.

This one was very interesting to me, I repair washing machines and other appliances for a living, that's where I get most of the metals to melt from, everything gets thrown away otherwise. I do get a lot of that Aluminium wire thought, I call it Chinesium 😋 1 thing about the circuit boards, pretty sure someone might have said it already but the little plastic boxes on the boards are relais and have copper spools in them, and also brass or copper pins with silver contacts, they are often nice and crunchy if the board is old so very easy to get some extra copper from. Great looking bar! The top of a copper bar always looks to me like the surface of Mars. 👍👊

Things I've learned from this channel: 1. Cardboard will keep the crucible from sticking to the forge. 2. Always preheat your molds to prevent a steam explosion. 3. Also preheat your tools to prevent a steam explosion. 4. Bronze can be made with aluminum as well as tin. 5. Coat lead in a thick layer of sealant to make it safe to handle. 6. French bulldogs are absolutely adorable~

6:45 You can extract a small amount of tin, silver and even gold from old circuit boards. It's a pretty small amount in each one, but since you have so many...

It's usless there's not enough gold in a circuit board (the average gold and silver in a pcb is between 10 to 15 pico grams and it's not enough to be recovered since it would dissolve in particles) also the procedure is pretty expensive and dangerous

@@lucafortini4711 , I actually knew of a retired man about 20 years ago who removed the gold as a hobby and did quite well at it. He was different from most people because he had access to trailer loads of old computers. So it certainly isn't a great move for many people, but if you like detail work and a challenge, it can work well for a few.

With all the PCB's, you should extract the gold from them. It's a little work to get it, but would be fun to see a time lapse of the extraction and melting the gold.

hey bigstack, i was wondering, i heave been taking electronics apart for a long time, and i have come across copper wires that are coated in a silvery metal. people have told me that this is tin. if you come across this kind of wire, to you melt it anyway, even if it will turn out an impure copper alloy?

yes I just meltdown as usual mate and it doesn’t change the copper bar at all the tin coating and sometimes aluminium coating is so thin it would make up probably less than 0.01% of the copper. If you check out next Friday‘s video I melt down some connection cables from a locomotive and they are definitely aluminium or tin coated and the bar comes out just like a normal copper bar👍🏻.

Just curious...you deal a lot with eletronic boards which will have trace amounts of precious metals on them. Have you ever thought to go through the process (albeit lengthy) to extract/harvast those metals?

I have an idea on those circuit boards, it'll be a pain in the @$$ but you could take the copper from the windings and make a copper melt. Just a suggestion. Keep up the great work, love your videos TwT

I know it can be somewhat complicated, but the motherboards "where the transistors are..." contain very little gold, yes, but they do have gold, it may be that by having enough you can get something out of it. a greeting

What you could do witha all the electrical Boards, clip the Gold plated stims off untill you have a good bitt. Then its a a some what process getting the plated gold off. But its worth it Big DoG!

Would be interesting to see if you could get a little bit of gold out of all those circuit boards - dunno how much is in them, and it'd probably be a decent bit of effort to process 'em down, but having some gold to add to the stack would be neat even if it's just a tiny bead.

If you know someone who refines, they can get the gold off the pcb's. Or you can batch sell them on eBay. People buy them

You should try gold removal from those pcb's. Its not too hard to do but is more chemicals than melting :( . Nice video as usual

You should watch a RU-vid clip about how to get the gold out of the motherboards. Its a weird proces but you should get a lot of actual gold out of them

Are you getting into fall there or is it just a break in the relentless heat? I Hope this video was a little less sweaty to produce(ie not to hot outside)
