I grew up on 185th St., Washington heights. At that time the neighborhood was mostly Cuban, Irish and Jewish. It had the best Cuban bakery I can still smell the bread!, then they all moved to Florida
This Cubana use to live there on 177th street between Fort Washington & Pinehurst Ave, for 12 yrs. From 1986-1994, I left NYC in 1994 to Florida, been here in Florida ever since. It felt so strange to see my old neighborhood after so many years wow ty for sharing this video.
@southern life , nyc videos are informative , and good . but the baltimore , maryland video was award wining . you did not know what to expect . one minute the street was not so bad , the next , a dramatic change .
When I was little we lived in the Bronx but did all our shopping across the bridge in Washington Heights. It was a convenient place to shop; we didn't need to go downtown for our shopping needs. We could bus across the bridge or walk. I always walked. There were lots of stores in the Heights. I remember especially Wertheimers department store. Also, there was a large Woolworth store that sold delicious parfaits which we could enjoy during a shipping break. Happy memories.
Great place to live, lots of shops and restaurants, and you can get up in the morning and walk to your favorite coffee shop or restaurant and have a great breakfast.
When he kept saying, "It's so chaotic" i started to wonder where he is from. He is from Philly. I have only been there once, and it was like a ghost town. New Yorkers will not survive in Philly.
Washington Heights is a culture rich area. I grew up and lived there early 1960s thru mid 1990s. Had fun but I was more than happy to leave and move to the burbs. After a while the grime, crime, rats, roaches, garbage, NOISE, no place to park a car and crowds of people are turn offs. Also, if u don't speak fluent Spanish u can feel lost and alone despite being around so many people...FACTS >When it was time to go I was relieved to see the Heights in my rearview mirror. NYC for the most part is NOT a place I'd encourage a young person looking to establish themselves to go to live.
