Somebody complained about stupid people dancing in front of the camera, as a jazz musician it’s great when people dance, it lifts the band, I’m also a photographer, I know it’s a bit of a pain but it happens, also remember that this kind of music is not concert music, it was for dancing too not just for sitting there listening, just enjoy the happiness it creates, a great band I would love to be its clarinet player.

The Dummy Song it is. Very rarely heard here in the UK but always a favourite when we play it - well, we like it anyway! The Shotguns & Tuba Skinny are among the best and most authentic classic jazz bands there are. Long may they continue!

Wow this band really drives 4/4 NOLA rhythm and plays with gusto, guts and verve. James Evans seems to be playing out of his scull. I've heard him in NOLA and what a great British born and trained clarinettist he is! Haruka Kickuchi is an overseas gem too from another island country. How both of them have really got hold of the spirit of New Orleans Jazz and taken it into a new generation and new generating!!

This is actually named "The Dummy Song", to the tune of "Washington and Lee Swing". (no ampersand). "Washington and Lee Swing" was written in 1910 as a school sports fight song with different lyrics, by three students from Washington and Lee University and later became very famous as a Dixieland jazz classic, because the tune really swings when played that way. New lyrics were written to parody it in 1925, as "The Dummy Song", by Ray Brown, Lew Henderson and Billy Rose. Same great swinging tune with hilarious lyrics ! Thanks for posting this - I always loved this song and Marla and Shotgun do an incredible job with it ! Best version I've heard.

jourkarfoy At first, I mistakenly thought you were referring to Lloyd Price's hit record by the same name of "Just Because " from 1957, which is a completely different song and wouldn't make any sense, but I forgot about the Shelton Brothers great version lol ! You're obviously referring to the version of "Just Because " which was written by Joe Shelton, Sydney Robin and Bob Shelton and originally recorded by Nelstone's Hawaiians (Hubert Nelson and James D. Touchstone) in 1929 and later recorded by The Shelton Brothers in 1933. Some sources which say that Sydney Robin wrote the song alone and the Sheltons added their name when they recorded it. It also was covered by many artists, including Elvis Presley and Paul McCartney. The similarity to Washington and Lee is the instrumental part, which of course, you're right about, but which they stole pretty much unchanged, from the original because, as I said, Washington and Lee Swing was written in 1910, but the lyrics are their own and have a similar funny theme , like "The Dummy Song" . Thanks for reminding me of that great song. 🥁 🎼

Marla is great on songs like this. They are louder and more raucous than Tuba Skinny, I'd love to see her and Shaye in a cutting contest on a song like this. A contest with no winners.

Or a contest with two winners. And the audience.

The Dummy Song has versions by both Louis Armstrong, several in the mid 1950s, and Louis Prima, in English and Italian.
