@@c4sp3rbruh LOL! Hell yes I bet it hurt! I wouldn't be surprised if it was the solitary Cicada Killer wasp. They live in holes in the ground. They are huge! My neighbor kept insisting that mud dobber wasps do not sting. Well I stepped on one with bare feet and they sting! I think there is a misconception that because dobber are very unlikely to sting that they are incapable of stinging (like some species of wasp). Short story... most wasps sting and will light you up if they get angry enough! Some just get angry easier than others.
Oh man look up Tarantula Hawk Wasp. Makes the Cicada Killer look like a Honey Bee. I do believe they're 2nd on the insect sting pain index of the world and they're all over the desert here where I'm at.
Hey dude you need to hurry up with the casting and all that. Also the thing about you saying wasps are not yellow jackets or hornets is really stupid. Anyway thanks
I'm not even that into bugs or anything, but its really great watching someone who is very passionate and knowledgeable about things they enjoy. Great job :)
Quite a few things I watch that i'm not exactly into, but when the person creating the content is honest and passionate about their job, it makes the content enjoyable regardless. It's the people that fake their interest for views that aren't worth my time even if I lived forever
Not really. They are one of the few wasps I have encountered that aren't douchebags. They only attack if you try to swat them in particular, not if you go near their nest. And even if they do, they rank a 0.5 on the Schmidt pain index (fire ant has a 1.2, bullet ant has a 4)
@@jasonc584 they look really scary tho! Of course what they look like and how they act are 2 different things, if it doesn't sting me for no reason then I'm cool with it
I used to be terrified of them, until we had a nest in our driveway. I spent a few summers sitting next to the nest and lying near it so I could observe their behavior. They're actually chill. Just don't interfere with them.
@@mythdefied9070 I had a ton of them in the front yard last summer, never bothered anyone going by or into the house, but damn if they didn't fight the yellow jackets that try to nest on my garage door
Today i was stung over 20 times by a swarm of yellow jackets. Im obsessed with them now. It sucked big time but so fascinating how they swarmed and protected their queen the way they did.
That’s an awesome video. I had a cicada killer fly by me 2 times. Sounds like a helicopter flying past you. It wasn’t aggressive at all but it is quite frightening when you see the stinger when it Flies past your eyes. The hole was about 1/2” wide in the ground, next to my concrete slab/drive way. It was crazy. Such a cool creature that I never have even heard of. It took me a good solid 45 minutes googling it to find out what it was.
Thanks for this, being British the names and species are different in the US so enjoyed the education. Your comparison to vehicles was good and could be used for European cars having different model names in the States despite being virtually the same vehicle... Thoroughly enjoying your channel 👍 Peace Charlie 🇬🇧
Had a European hornet in my apartment the other day... I had no problem hitting that thing so hard with a tennis rakket it flew across the room and got knocked out after hitting the wall
I’ve got a day off and child is away at camp so I’m at home doing laundry and making my way through your videos. It’s absolutely fascinating to hear you talk about these insects that most people despise. I hope you can make this a profiting venture for yourself and I helped as much as I could. P.S.-not a stalker...just obsessed with your videos and the chickens! 😊
I admire your appreciation for these creatures. I watch your channel more for the knowledge you share than I do for the thrill/relief of their eradication. The close-ups are fantastic! By the way, an interesting tidbit: "bald" comes from "piebald," referring to their alternating black and white patterns. Please keep it up. Thanks!
I wouldn’t worry about pandering to the smart asses they’re a dime a dozen! Although perhaps the best way to approach that problem is to put subtitles with their scientific name?.. new to the channel love it!
We have mud wasps and paper wasps here in Oz, the mud wasps here build a mud cocoon and stuff it full of stunned spiders/ insects for the larvae to feed on. Yum!
I just saw my 1st cicada killer ever yesterday on my jobsite. It was killing a cicada in a tree I was working on. I was amazed how it was able to carry the cicada away with ease.
The only wasps I am nervous around is usually cicada killers, especially if they fly very close to me after appearing out of nowhere. Happened to me this week and I legit thought it was a Hornet for a second so it startled me
relatable because you have a lot of question that pops up into your head like for example, how did he manganed to get them dead, i understand why you would have anxiety.
Never seen a cicada killer in person, but the Bald-faced hornet and western yellowjacket are pretty common here in southern Washington. We also have a fair amount of German Yellowjackets as well, although they're tricky to distinguish from the Western Yellowjacket. The most reliable way is the yellow ring around the compound eyes like you mentioned. Also, the marking in the 1st abdominal segment seems to be more of a sharp diamond shape on the Western Yellowjacket and more of a rounded spade shape on the German Yellowjacket.
Come to SW Oklahoma. Cicada killers are much bigger than the University of Nebraska antimaligy. The nice thing is they are very calm. Bumblebees are a whole other story. I am allergic, but I ride my 150 Super Vespa!!
The comments are always so full of professors lol aren't they?! Everybody's an expert, but for some reason, they're relegated to sharing their profound wisdom in relative anonymity in RU-vid comment sections hahaha as opposed to creating channels of their own. (Or even having a job at all lol doing anything! 😂) I come here to learn, because I don't know anything about wasps. Except that they're extremely important and should be respected and protected. (The hilarious chickens don't hurt, either 🐔) 🤜💥🤛
TWSTF 8 Wasps are useless pests bees should be protected and cared for wasps should be exterminated wasps invade bee hives and eat their larvae and wasps don’t produce anything good
I got stung three times last week by all black hornets i live in upstate NY and the nest was in a tree they were super aggressive and swarmed me as soon as i got close teying to determine what type they were you by chance have any idea the stings were very painful with it feeling almost like bruises around areas.
Fun fact: Cicada Killers no not interact with humans whatsoever. The only chance you’re going to be stung by one is if you step on their nest. I live in Nebraska and they live here too, there’s actually a nest in my family’s front yard.
I appreciate your efforts to educate layman, like myself, on the different markings of each type of wasp. As a mathematician, I’ve used my education to calculate the odds of ever getting close enough to those ‘winged devils’, to make such an identification. Through a series of very uncomplicated algorithms, I’ve determined the odds to be somewhere in the, slim to none category. 😁. Seriously, though, thanks for the education. I love your vids! Carry on, sir✌🏻
I got stung by a hornet that looked like the bald-faced hornet but the stripes were a LITTLE BIT more yellowish and when I got stung it was like: AAAAAAAAAAAAA my friend: JUMP IN THE POOL JUMP IN THE POOL! Me: (jumps in the pool) the wasp: on my butt and dead on my butt still and I didn't notice. Edit: it hurt so much I cried super loud
Its cicada time here in North Alabama and the cicada killers have started their nesting season. Ive found that they are not really aggressive unless you disturb the burrow they’ve dug. Its amazing to see them flying with a cicada, which is much bigger than they are! We have them in our flower beds where the soil is loose and have learned to live with them. Great video about a confusing subject!
Yes! As kids we used to see them carrying cicadas on the patio of the town pool believe it or not, I think they made nests in the flower beds. So interesting to watch. Nobody bothered them and nobody got stung.
I’ve always known bald faced hornets as Japanese hornets for some reason... maybe it’s just where I’m from. Thanks for the lesson! Even though I’m terrified of bees and wasps because I was stung quite a few times as a kid, I’ve always enjoyed learning about them. I find that knowing about them lessens fear and builds respect. Respect to you dude I would never get as close to nests as you do.
thanks for the vid's! as a land surveyor in Lake Tahoe, CA i see a lot of underground eastern hornets. They are so smart you'll get hit mulitiple times in seconds if you don't know you're near the nest! and they follow you a good 40 yards, even if you're in a dead run after being stung 5 times already within 5 seconds lol. i've learned from experience more than once!! but you could probably pinpoint what species they are
We only have yellow jackets really in the UK don’t seem to see other wasps we definitely don’t have the.Bold face hornet bold Hornets well Iv never seen one but I know the yellow Jackets billed nests in houses got one my Seth but they not really bin bugging us so far I know thay do good at the end of the day. Am gessin the stings are worse on the bold face hornet than the yellow Jacket.
Mike Wilkins Iv never seen European hornet yet Iv heard rumours that the evil Japanese hornet is coming to the uk but I don’t think that queen could survive a British winter.
had a cicada killer camping right outside my front door for about 2 weeks, right when i was trying to leave every morning. was there every morning, at the same time, and only that time as far as i can tell. really freaked me out for awhile until i did some research and saw that they really don't pose a threat to humans and rarely ever attack. freaky looking for sure though
Thanks for the info! Never really studied up on this topic, but find it pretty cool! Great video! And remember BEEhave out there. Lol! Yeah dad joke....
I love Cicada Killers the most, here in the US ♥ I haven't seen any since I was a teen, though... A bunch of them lived in the bushes at my dad's old job (IT at a power company), but I think they made the bigwigs nervous, so they had them removed. T-T
I’m convinced most demons are just huge versions of insects - especially hornets! And that’s why we have such a primal fear of them despite how small they are. I have a whole theory lol
I like the fat fuzzy black bees with the shiny backs. We have always called them "sentinal bees" cuz they fly back and forth along the back on the house like they are on sentry duty. Never gotten stung. Kinda neat when they fly up and hover opposite your face, up, down, side to side, like they're checking you out, and the take off again. Same path, same speed. I believe they are a form of a carpenter bee, though I have never found them burrowing in my shed, or found evidence of them borrowing into either of the wood decks on the back of the houses on either side of my house (row houses).
Carpenter bees! The males are the annoying ones, and they are harmless. Their burrows can weaken wood however. They’re usually considered pests for that reason, but like their lookalike cousins, the bumblebees, they’re important native pollinators.
I thought learning about different types of these creatures would help with my fear of them. I thought they were just nuisances before I did some research and learned that they do actually help the environments they live in, and while I am still very afraid of them, I do have more respect and appreciation for them now. I still plan to keep my distance from them at all times though. This was a great and very informative video, keep up the good work!
Love your channel. I live in the midwest on 40 acres, half is timber. I have encounters with yellowjackets and hornets at least a couple times a year because I run a sawmill as a hobby, and am in the woods logging frequently. Something that might interest you, (or you may already know), but I have noticed some interesting behavior over the past couple years that both european, and bald faced hornets exhibit. My situation is unique, because I work midnights and so on my 2 days off every week, I am up through the night and this is when I do my logging. I have LED light bars on my tractor.. and something interesting happens and I want to try to figure out why. At least a couple times per night, usually a European hornet (sometimes a bald faced) will start circling the light on the tractor. It will fly circles, loops, all kinds of aerobatic maneuvers around the light... but if I am sitting on the tractor when it happens, eventually the hornet will land on my head and sting! WOW it HURTS (as you well know). This happens when I am nowhere near a nest.. so I know it's not a nest defense tactic. Maybe they are confused/scared by the light and just freak out? What are your thoughts? It is literally a pain because I have to really pay attention to what is circling the tractor because if it's a hornet, a sting is imminent! Thanks!
Cicada Killer wasps freak me out. I know they don’t want trouble and will generally leave you alone. The stinger is for killing Cicadas. I saw one messing around in some water. It started flying and I guess it had trouble and fell directly at my face. I dodged it but if I hadn’t that would have been horrible if it had landed on my face.
I once had a "pet" cicada killer wasp! She got pretty ornery when her jar was moved around! The stinger was incredible! She would stick it out one of the air holes in the lid, which, you definitely want to keep EVERY part of your body away from! Unfortunately she only lived a few days from being caught, but it was autumn, so it's just the circle of life! It was fun though! She had a really MEAN looking face though! Also, a question: Is it safe to hold a male wasp in your fingers? I know they don't sting, but can they deliver a nasty bite if you hold them long enough? Also, male paper wasps have hooked antennas and a rounder and lighter colored head, making it a bit easier to tell between a male or female!
Important info starts at 0:20; up close of the insects starts later. It's important people watch from beginning, because if you skip ahead, you'll be the ignorant commenter on my next video saying "Bald Faced Hornets aren't yellow jackets". 🤷♂️
One of the most "nature is hardcore" moments I ever had was watching a cicada killer chase a cicada, tackle it out of the air, sting it like 5-10 times, then pick it up and fly off with it. Metal as heck.
Sarah Allen trust me if one of those is chasing a cicada it wants nothing to do with you. Like most of em. But when I was younger before I knew what they were they scared me to death.
@@43labontepetty I know it didn't bother me but problem is, I'm allergic and he took the cicada up into the branch above my head, I wasn't risking him dropping it and swooping down to get it... No.. Way.. Lol
As a peds nurse I think, damn! IM vs Insulin needle. Love the video as always! Side question, are you originally from a coastal area? I hear a beach life accent in certain words.
Anyone else getting recommended videos from a Japanese RU-vid page. Some of the footage is pretty good but there is no English translation captions so I don’t know what kind of bees/hornets/wasps they are. Bret, I loved this video, you explain everything! ❤️
What's as big as european hornet but with black and yellow stripes same color and patern as the Asian hornets and live in NW corner of Arkansas by ok and mo border? And appear just after dark and like bright led shop lights? Cause I've killed 10 in October and 1 in March and bug guy sprayed nest in march under over hang of shop. and this 1st time in 20 years I remember seeing them
Ohhhh God I am cringing as u touch them with that tweezer I am Deathly AFRAID OF BUGS ESPECIALLY STINGING ONES, God bless Your Wife for putting up with your Dangerous job and you are handsome too oh Lord I Pray for You
In Hungary we call the "european hornet" as "Lódarázs" Where the "Ló" means "Horse" and the "Darázs" means "Wasp" So "horsewasp" but we use the word "horse" for describe the creature's size (Huge like a horse) So the word "Lódarázs" means "Wasp that huge as a horse"
This man has experienced the internet with it's common species of people who feel their opinions and knowledge, be it true or false, is above all others and anyone who disagrees with them must be a blasphemous witch who needs to be hunted and destroyed. What's crazy is this species also has a bunch of branches. A branch for every religion, political idiology, sexual orientation, sex and anything you could possibly have an opinion on. The most rare species of human on the internet are those who listen to learn rather than listen to respond. We have a lot of cicada killers this year in Pennsylvania. And they always seem to want to fly right by me or into me. It's almost like bugs can sense that they creep me out. 🤣 I like bugs. I think they're fascinating to watch at a distance. But I don't like them near me or on me. There's actually a lot of confusion right now between cicada killers and the giant Asian "murder hornet's". May be a good topic for a video. 👍 Anyway, thanks for the great informative video!
