How to make a homemade drip feed for a waste oil burner. Close up view of the drip feed system on this homemade waste oil burner. This oil drip feed system really makes an Awesome amount of heat for as little as 2 litres of waste oil per hour.
I made this video to show in some detail how I control the oil into the burn chamber of this waste oil burner / heater.
It is quite economical for the amount of heat it is capable of generating and smoke free.
The oil delivery is a simple drip feed with a 1/2 inch gate valve which I detail in the video.
This simple little waste oil stove is fed from a bucket of oil and requires no power. It could be miniaturized but it has a dual use shed heater and cooking.
This drip feed system combined with the burner in this video makes lots of heat and could be used to heat water for free which I will show in some of my upcoming videos.
I used this burner design and drip feed oil system in one of my tin can burners. Cheers Gerry

Pretty cool design, my grandfather built a few of these in the early 80s. He used a pot belly stove with a cast iron skillet as a splatter pan, had the oil drip in probably half way up the side of the stove. He said that you wanted the oil to vaporize before it hit the pan. It would get very hot and he added a coil to heat water!

This is awesome! I collect scrap metal for welding projects and have to change the oil in my truck about twice a month (about 7.5 gallons per month). Sounds like a win-win situation. By the way, I have the same radio in my shop...late 70's vintage.

You can pressurize your oil reservoir and use regulator on input to sealed tank, mine is made from those old refillable large fire extinguishers. I set at 3 pounds. nice job on yours otherwise. Mine i think is still on old property from 1990, i bet it still works though i not been there in over 10 years. I not do that plate or air tube, it would have fine tuned mine. Thanks for upload, oh....i never reset my flow once set, on line out, but only adjusted air pressure to reserve pot with the air pressure regulator . just pinched off gas line style rubber hose at reservoir with vise grips but i like that you can see your flow though that peek hole. This my first i watch of yours and you won me over as fan with cost of buttons. God bless.

With mine, I have mounted my oil bucket up high and aside from the stove. I use a Culligan type water bottle (for a water cooler) so that I can see how much oil is in it. Beside the stove I have a 45 gallon drum, that's easy to pour used oil into from my buddies garage and a rotary barrel pump that is hard plumbed up to the bucket....I pour oil into the barrel and as needed crank on the barrel pump to fill the water bottle up... Less mess and a lot easier when you are trying to pour 5 gallon pails...I can get my 30 by 30 garage from Zero C to 20 C in about 45 minutes. Insulated walls and only sheeted ceiling...

Very nice. Been studying this form of energy exchange on and off for a few years. Think you have broken it down to the point I might actually make it. Thank you... I was thinking that if you install a piezoelectric switch close to the oil drip you could light the stove easier by pouring the kerosene into the large pipe you use for the oil air input... something to try...

i used a burner kinda like that but i used a blower and it was more of a vertical set up and just used a 6 inch pipe for the burner . anyway i used kerosen just like you until once i ran out so i used the cutting tourch to fire it up and was suprised how well it got it going with out any extra ' thanks

You need closed cell blow insulation on those walls and ceiling. That would go a long way in slowing heat loss. A fine and simple presentation and I like your style.

if you preheat your combustion air then you could run with a blue flame. move the combustion air to the back with a jacket pulling air accrost the combustion chamber walls. This surves 2 purposes 1 increases heat recovery 2 helps to keep the glow down. glowing =oxidation occurring fast enough to be visable. good idea on the propane upcycle. stick a bar into the holes and twist it to make the air come out in a swirl. A straight line is the shortest distance between two points, but a Vortex is the most efficient path between two points. . dreem big chisle down to reality

Great burner design, no electrics. Now, I would punch those air feed slots so they create a vortex, several smaller ones directing the air in a circular fashion. I think the extra work would pay back in efficiency

Hi Richard. I have some ideas for a newer burner which I will be building soon. Yes mixing is king and if I could get thing spinning without a fan that would be great. Great job! I suggest to try put three or four 2 1/2 intch pipes from the left to the right side of the barrel, underneath the cooking plate , as air heat exchangers . And from the one side of the barrel turn them down near to the floor and down from the other side of the stove... like a "Z" .For no electric fan need. keep up the nice job!

I was wondering do you think welding a tub for hot water to send heat somewhere else is possible? I'm in Canada I was thinking about heating my laneway so I don't have to shovel. But I might use glycol. 2.5 inch galvanized steel pipe and 2 old hot water tanks.

What do you think about using a cake pan as the burner, like a funnel cake pan for making a angle food cake? The pan that has the center hole. Does it greatly improve the life of the burner by using stainless steel over regular steel such as a cookie tin? Great video's!!!

Garry you may want to explain why you put the 1/2 inch copper feed tube inside the 1 inch black pipe conduit. So the 1/2 inch copper won't melt. The conduit sucks air in, and the air flow down the conduit keeps the 1/2 inch copper feed tube cool.

I would push forward the heating system towards radiating heating instead of convectional heating (that means you heat up the air). When you heat up the air, it will goes up immediately and you basically heating the ceiling. For efficient radiating heating you need more surface. I'd use much more flue pipe for that. I'd also remove the fan for this reason.

Just gone through your playlist and am very excited about your experiments. Fab success with such basic materials. What do you think the effect would be on making the burner taller; both the walls and the center tower, with holes moved up off the bottom to clean up the burn by allowing another fraction of a second for the oil to gasify completely? Of course, I suppose it could crack, burn the shorter carbon chains first and leave the tar, but at 1200F I suspect not What do you think?

Nice! Maybe source out some used large oil filters instead of the small propane tanks. Might work as a double walled burner. Wont last as long but free.

Great video. I'm thinking stainless steel for the burner and that propane bottle with the holes in it would make it last a whole lot longer. I think that top barrel with the steel and pipe welded in it has to be air tight so no smoke come out through the welds? right?

Hi Jim. I have a 6 inch diameter and 13 feet long flue connected to this stove and it makes a lot of draft in the burner wihich is what makes that roar you can hear at the start. The whole things needs to be quite air tight so that all the gases go out through the flue. If I open the door there is enough draw on the unit so that it will not smoke into the shed. For an unconventional stove it works great. I have a newer burner that I am making in the next couple of days. Cheers Gerry

Hi mate I was thinking that if maybe you use a metal oil drum that holds the oil and put it closer to your chimney so it heats it up while it’s in the drum it might burn more efficiently as the oil is already heated up. I could be wrong but if it works it might cut down on the amount of oil u use.

Hi there, I’m thinking of making a tiny oil burner from the roller drum off an old lawn mower that I have laying around. I also have some exhaust pipe (approx 3.5”) my question is, will the exhaust pipe be sufficient or do I need bigger bore pipe for the chimney? The drum/roller is about 2’ x 10”. Thanks

You should use IV tubing (medical IV) for the oil supply. It’s clear and you can regulate the flow very easily. Look for a 10ml per minute set.

Hullo from New Zealand. I have been trying to work out your flue extraction from the 44 gallon drum. Have you got a T-piece running out horizontally behind the drum? Are there two inner walls next to the hotplate that create a cavity on each side. Great stuff happening over there.

Hi John. Imperial pints are different in size to US pints but it uses in the region I think of 2 quarts or 2 to 3 litres per hour to redden it. Tons of heat. The saw was too powerful for light work so I use it for ripping. It's a workmate adjustable bench so I just wind in and out the fence to rip narrow boards. Well spotted. Cheers Gerry

Gerry. Been working on a Waste oil stove concept for years. I have the same problem that you do. Can't find the time to insulate the old Garage . Anyhow I have another more severe problem, I have made a couple of video's last year of my contraption that I made from a used fuel oil Stove which was popular in the 1950's and 1960's and didn't know if you had the same problem or not. I have built 3 different variations types of waste oil stove's basically always changing the delivery with the problem of the discharge pipe clogging up at the end. I try to pre-heat the oil to make it burn faster, but the problem is the pipe always plugs up. any suggestions?This is made out of an oddly shaped vintage fuel oil stove by the way with the fuel oil portion disabled. I will try to upload a video for you to analyze my latest creation.

I wonder if you are cooking your oil with all that pre-heating and while getting out the gases you want to burn, also getting the tars left behind. Fuel oil is different than waste oil. Fuel oil is lighter, like kerosene, and doesn't contain those heavy elements so getting it to vaporize before ignition was optimal and had no drawback. Gerry is trying to burn waste oil which was used to lubricate and contains heavy oils that need to stay dissolved in the lighter ones until they are free of the piping and come into contact with that 1200F burner. I wonder if shortening up your piping run inside your heat chamber to a straight short run to the burner would help. Gerry's pipe-within-a-pipe trick also must cool the fuel pipe since their is a negative pressure in the burn chamber as evidenced by the roar.
