hour I have built units that use up to 2 gallons per hour or about
145,000 watts I use oil burners for many things mostly for burning
tree stumps out of the ground, waste oil burners work great for
forges or smelting metal. Ive built many types of waste oil burners
from syphon nozzle waste oil burners to drip feed to vaporizer
coil waste oil burners . these also can be used to build a furnace
and heat very large areas . the most efficiant waste oil burner
i have biult is a siphon nozzle
atomizer and it uses about 4 liters of waste oil per hour .
do not burn transmission oil it is toxic .Oil Burner Designs
Drip Style
Low Tech. No atomization.
Natural Draft possible (no electricity)
Mother Earth News’ design is widely used. Designed in 1970’s.
Today’s motor oil has additives that resist degradation and allow engines to run
at higher temperatures. In effect, waste oils are now much harder to burn cleanly
and likely require preheating and atomization.
Conventional fuel oil burners
Modest efficiency improvements over time - although overall burner design hasn’t
changed much
As homeowners upgrade to modern heat pumps, these old style burners are
ubiquitous in scrapyards and can be purchased for very little cost.
Most can be operated without modification with up to 20% biodiesel. (B20)
Predictable issues with higher ratios of biofuels - ‘gelling’ and damage to rubber
seals. Commercial biofuel safe pumps and preheaters available.
Very convenient, tight design.
Siphon Nozzle
Requires high capacity air compressors
LP can be used in lieu of air
Fuel pumps not required
Preheating for reliable viscosity
“Constant level device” to maintain consistent fuel flow
Simple DIY nozzles can be made from off the shelf hardware
Manufactured nozzles available for retrofitting gun style burners for Waste Oils
Babington Style
Fuel flows OVER nozzle, rather than through nozzle
Imagine fine mist from a whale’s blowhole
Filtration matches your pump - not your nozzle
Requires sump and pump
Same preheating issues with alternative fuels

That's the ultimate garage heater. Looks to be hard on your homeowners. My wife won't let me play with stuff like that in the house. She is no longer here. LOL Great fun.

You ever thought about using a oil pump instead of the siphone ive thought about it becasue i only have a 10 gallon compresser but i dont know if thats to much pressure for the oil lines.

oil pumps are not easy to work with , they cost alot and are either to big or to small , i did biuld a really good one using a cheep air compressor

Your using to much preasure behind the fuel without a large enough injection end on the fuel feeder you should have a oxygen adjustment valve enabling a hand adjustment since the temp is such a constant! Especially since you're in an unclosed environment without constant pressure good luck Bob don't blow the garage up

would like to see the burner head (or what in end of pipe) and why the wrapping around the pipe end ????

Isn`t just leak on the vacuum thats doing the no oil flow, because its sucking air insted of oil

Cool but I think it was air in the fuel

Inserting a small spiral [this image is ONLY for reference purposes, its both too expensive and too much work to buy, then dismantle, but its the only thing with a simple spiral I could think of quickly www.ebay.com/itm/18-3-8-Steel-Auger-ScrewIn-Ground-Anchor-Stake-Secure-Canopy-Tent-Tarp-Carport/ ] it is literally just a simple circle of steel, snipped to its mid point then bent to the point it works generally as a spiral, one can use a hole saw and do the same, or possibly tin snips, jig saw, air nibbler, acetylene torch or plasma cutter, and just use it to give a little twist to the flames to extend the burn duration while adding swirl and compression [ image here may help some ] to the flame. By inducing the swirl you will also force any liquid oil to 'smear' thinly along the outside surfaces and spend more time inside the tube being exposed to heat and oxygen, than if it drips out the front. Granted, this is not a super high pressure air flow system, so its not going to be as dramatic as your compressor driven one, but it will to some extent still work. For the other one [with the blower] I would have suggested that the outlet be conical instead of a sudden flat wall then an outlet because flame velocities would have increased as it tapered, again, increasing pressure and combustion efficiency for a cleaner, hotter burn.

Insulating your pre-heater and feeder tube would help some as well, but you would have to ensure that your preheater had a steady pressure rate to eliminate sputtering. When choosing your insulation you may have to search up on your insulation options. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-temperature_insulation_wool Many companies build a stainless steel [high chrome composition] preheater tube into their system which literally rests in the flame stream. Yes you have a 'flame holder' that holds a hot spot. You can also use a T-fitting as a flame holder/fire pot, so long as it is very hot. Also one can put a preheater coil in the 'T' only it will have a bit of a cooling effect on the air within the pot, so it might not be as good as putting the coil down stream in the muzzle of the jet exhaust point. My universal mixed fuel design works off the premise that 100% of the fuel feed has to pass through the flame to get to the burner and that the post usage [be it a power generator, foundry, water heater, home heater, etc] is subdivided through some form of heat exchanger [like you get on a Dayton type ceiling mount oi fired shop heater] to significantly pre-heat the air to increase combustion efficiency as well as more efficiently utilize the heat energy on whole. www.thermopedia.com/content/1087/

yes i see what your saying about the convergent throat . im thinking of connecting a blower to introduce some tangent flow inside the device at the end of the combuster , the elbow unit that is , and then im gonna try and run it with a massive fuel flow . I can get it to shoot 8 foot flames out the front but as you said i need to increase pressure to increase the temp.

I think im gonna take your advice and look at some jet engine combustion liners and combustion cans , maybe i should build a jet engine instead of a waste oil burner ? however , jet engines use 500 psi fuel systems so this might get expensive . Im thinking maybe i should put a combuster can inside my drip feed burner . i know it sounds kinda dumb but i wanna biuld a burner hot enough to super heat steam and smelt iron to pass the steam threw the iron bath to liberate large amounts of hydrogen gas. i also wanna biuld a boiler to distill gallons of water in just an hour and not hours . so i do have some goals in mind with these devices just not any money yet for the experiments . these videos will hopefully generate enough revenue

i may try and fabricate a swirler plate and give it a try , years ago i seen how combustion cans all use this in jet engines as you said and they have some extremely hard to build geometry on some of the higher efficiency units . Do you thing a blue flame is possible with a good swirl burn ? ive seen 1 oil burner turn into a blue flame but it might not of bin a genuine oil burner , it had a Superior fuel mixing duct system , its some of that Russian hard core stuff lol

Again, for high viscosity oil, you can often use literal oil pumps out of cars, or off of hydraulic systems, just be sure you filter and mag float your oil to ensure it neither grinds up your pump or clogs your injector. I do not know where they came from, but once my cousin up in Wisconsin had a really tiny pintle torch cutting head, not nearly as small as a diesel fuel injector, but way more forgiving, especially since it was a 2 piece affair. If you could get an old cutting torch with a heavy thick mounting head and just make a pull-through needle valve in the back of it for the oxygen port, you could have a 2 stage flame system with really fine ignition vapor and heavier max burn flow. I have an Eddlebrock carb on my truck and the needles are vacuum adjusted but one could possibly use a mechanical thermostat or an alcohol type thermostat to push the needle in and out based on a set desired temperature range so that it either warmed up slowly, or else it allows you to give it a set temperature range. If an actual carb metering jet would not work, a torch tip cleaner might be close enough.
