On April 25, 2018, the World Affairs Council-Washington, DC hosted a Foreign Policy Panel series event featuring panelists Heather Conley (CSIS), Nina Jankowicz (Kennan Institute), and Ambassador Alexander “Sandy” Vershbow (Atlantic Council). The panel was moderated by Ambassador András Simonyi (SAIS Johns Hopkins University) to discuss the future of NATO and US-European relations.
President Trump’s professed attitude towards NATO is one of skepticism. He has echoed criticisms that the US is paying more than its fair share to NATO, as opposed to the partner European states. This has had an effect on the relationship between the United States and several prominent European allies. More scrutiny has been applied to the future of NATO, particularly in relation to how committed European members and the United States are to the organization. Panelists discuss the future of NATO, the impact of a re-emergent Russia on its strategy, the European and American commitment to the organization, and how its continuation or dismemberment may affect US-European relations.
