Dutch folk song originally from Brittany, created in the late 1920s. Called "Son ar chistr", the Song of the Cider. It was popularized by farmers when sung at the end of harvest time, to make fun of themselves. The lyrics in Breton talk about a man who has a tough time with his wife beating him and cursing him all the time. But, as said the lyrics: "Cider is made to be drunk, and girls to be loved!". Ar chistr ' zo graet 'vit bout evet, hag ar merc'hed 'vit bout karet !
In Nederland werd de versie van Rapalje, getiteld Wat zullen we drinken, populair. Deze folkband op Keltische leest ontdeed het lied van zijn politieke lading en voegde drie coupletten van eigen hand toe. (Wikipedia)

My suggestion for you is to remove that shit. The guy just entered Dutch text into something like google translator. In my oppinion it is better not to have any subtitles at all than the one you have now. But, of course, it's up to you. And the song is great!

I grew up with Bots' well known version, which is canonical to me to the point that I believed it to be an original. I loved Bots' contemporary lyrics and clear vocals as well as the tight rhythm. This version has retained and reinforced these qualities as well as embellishing the song with a richer orchestration. Prima gedaan. Bots mag trots zijn.

Hey everyone :) I am making an unusual comment here: I am studying music education in Germany and we are currently having a seminar about music taste, how it develops and what makes us be drawn to a certain type of music. at the moment we are doing a brief research on how a certain music scene that we do not actually like so much/have never had contact with is perceived when dealt with on a daily basis for a while. As in: do we start to ,,understand"/like it? As I usually listen to Hip-Hop or Techno, I chose folk as a scene that is strange to me. I am just at the beginning of this self-experiment and listening to different Folk-Songs. (actually the plan was to attend festivals and concerts for research but now we have Corona, you know...) For my research it would be interesting and important to know what YOU, who love Folk, love about it and what makes it appealing to you. Also it would be interesting for me to know how you got into the scene, please write anything that comes to your mind. :) Thank you so much if you read this comment. Well, I'm from Colombia, this is a pretty foreign type of music to me but I do enjoy it a lot (I like some folk andean music as well). I first discovered this song years ago being a huge fan of Metal music (Now I listen mostly techno and jazz). I was learning german at the time (aber, Ich habe alles vergessen) and the teacher showed me the german version. I know this is dutch but I love Rapalje's interpretation. I was drawn to this music because of its overall aesthetics, it feels kind of piratey, uplifting and well...because it feels like an ode to drinking, which I find funny and appealing.

I lived on and off in other countries but left Britain permanently in the 1970s. Then for over 20 years in Ireland, then for 13 years in Cuba. I now live in the Canary Islands, Spain. I have always integrated as much as possible and have enjoyed the music of wherever I lived. As Britain has become even more embarrassing (I´m a Politics graduate) I´ve taken refuge in having a Dutch ancestor and am learning Dutch. It feels comfortable. I had spent a lot of time in Brittany and knew this song from then. So exploring Dutch music, I found this song that I knew so many years ago in a different language and a different place. My only post-graduate qualification is a diploma in Language and Communication, so it fascinates me to have found this song again in such different circumstances. Chinese here. Folk is the genre where I find minimum narcissism which you cannot escape from all pop nowadays. Folk is also where I touch history and tradition, well I love Nordic, Celtic, German and Israeli Folk most. Other taste: Metal but only with well-written lyrics, and whatever that is sincere and full of non-narcissistic emotion.

That's what I love about this song -- the fact that it's so old and, well, kinda mysterious-sounding to anyone who doesn't speak the language. It's as if it were a song of a long-forgotten, mysterious tribe of some strange folks ;)

I have some skills in german and I think some words in dutch are more similar to the swedish equivalent than it is to the geeman one. Of course I know why that might be, apart from our languages being related, Dutch merchants visited Sweden in the...idk...16th century?...to sell stuff to us, that demands a common language and so our languages came together of some sort...:) Cheers (raising my cup of coffee to the air, too early for beer...sorry cider, gotta study)!

Song originally from Brittany, created in the late 1920s. Called "Son ar chistr", the Song of the Cider. It was popularized by farmers when sung at the end of harvest time, to make fun of themselves. The lyrics in Breton talk about a man who has a tough time with his wife beating him and cursing him all the time. But, as said the lyrics: "Cider is made to be drunk, and girls to be loved!". Ar chistr ' zo graet 'vit bout evet, hag ar merc'hed 'vit bout karet !

But they also changed the lyrics to mean something different. These lyrics are about drinking +working +fighting+ eating +singing+making love It's basically a different song with the same melody and some connections in the lyrics. If you actually changed your nationally you wouldn't even have to change your name to be English. I think that is kinda what happened to this song, it's very different from the orginal.

1. they DO mention war/figting in this song at around 2:00 so this isn't a song about drinking in peace 2. "survival of the fittest" has nothing to do with Call of Duty or whatever it is a scientific principal. 3. Violence is be part of humanity, be glad we have video games so we can act out our natural behaver without actually hurting anyone.

I also think it is originally Breton and the relation to apple cider matches? I know this song in the Flemish version since the beginning of the 70ies. I think it was the Brussels band called 't kliekske' that made a single of it.
