HUGE trailer fire! | A Day In The Life of an OTR Trucker
Just another typical day in the life of an over the road truck driver... Just kidding! This trip was anything but typical. I was on my way back to SLC, UT when I drove up on a trailer fire! BKM got out and used my fire extinguisher to try and help put out the flames, but that didn't work so I called in the fire fighters. No one was hurt in the making of this video, thankfully. Big shout out to the Oregon State Troopers and North Powder Rural Fire Dept. for responding quickly, and handling the scene proficiently.

Forwarding on a couple of ideas. 1 - Have a second vest that you “pair” over the top of your jacket (slightly dorky) so it’s always there. 2 - get some reflective stripes (not necessarily hi-vis) to strategically place (back, sleeves, etc). Not super obvious, but definitely better than nothing

Awesome to see you stopping to help. I would recommend you get some tactical flashlights that have the strobe feature for it will make it easier for people to see you. I would also recommend getting roadside flares because the only time the reflectors work is when they are hit with light. Flares, especially in this situation with all the smoke, can be seen whether light hits them or not. Might also help to have a reflective vest with battery powered strobes attached so people can see you as you're laying the triangles and flares out. I have all this in my roadside kit in my jeep I would highly recommend you do the same. Good to see everyone was okay and it didn't get worse than it did.

27+ years Vol. Fire Fighter last like 16 years Captain. You got a very good wonderful heart. You sure can wheel that truck..But PLEASE be extra very careful you never know what they are hauling. My experience Like 70% + is not correct on there DOT name plate what the Bozo's are hauling.. You never know. You please watch video of truck tires blowing up over heat. They do major damage. Killed more than a few people. Heat is what set them off. Brakes yes brakes like 90% time getting hot that what get trailers on fire. Like Bozo not releasing there trailer brakes or getting them hot overuse on steep incline.. But take care of your own personal safety 1st. Best saying I ever heard is that!!! Safety starts with yourself 1st. I think all us do not want see you get hurt..yes trucking can & is A dangerous business.

We use old truck wheels for campfires at the beach that last all weekend. The wind won't blow it out once the magnesium starts, nearly impossible to extinguish either a Halon extinguisher or bury it in sand to deplete the oxygen. The brakes probably got hot which ignited the gear oil in the hubs, which started the tire burning which then created enough heat to ignite the magnesium wheel, all easily extinguished except for the wheel. Thus the reason most companies use steel wheels on their trailers to protect their loads. If you've got aluminum(magnesium) wheels on the trailer and they ignite, get that truck uncoupled and away from the trailer a couple hundred feet, grab some marshmallows and enjoy s'mores while you text the insurance company that your going to flip burgers at McDonald's for your next job....😂👍

You need a safety vest in the door pocket so you can grab it when getting out, also a flashlight if you jump out on impulse hopefully you will see the safety vest and grab it. Sadly this shows how distant people are and they will even laugh at others misfortune instead of helping, you show the way we are supposed to be and I hope it teaches others to help. I always try to help, when I had small kids I would at minimum dial 911 and tell them what was going on.

So glad you love my home state! The western end of the gorge hasn't really been the same since the Eagle Creek fire, and your drone footage is actually the first I've seen of Oneonta Gorge since the fire. It'll come back someday!

Excellent video, well done! Check out a product called Mini Firefighter. Everyone needs to carry a couple of these in their vehicles. It may have made a difference in this truck fire.

The reasons that other truckers don’t get involved is because of schedules and liability they don’t want to risk getting injured and putting in a insurance claim and losing their job they are following instructions by their employer if a driver stops it most likely be a independent driver now you may not agree or understand that but I have driven for companies where this topic was addressed in safety meetings and that was the ruling by the management of those companies if I got 200 trucks on the road and they are serviced and pretriped then that’s the way other trucks should be operating as well

Great job and back in the old days there would have been 25 trucks on the side of the road helping that guy. You did good stay safe and warm and see you later down the road

Scariest part of this video was you , dressed in black, at night, on the side of a freeway. Kudos for wanting to help , but self preservation should be the first item on your list. I carry a Hi-Vis reflective vest in my vehicle just in case I ever break down or need to help someone else on the roadside. They come in several Hi-Vis colors. Please pick your favorite and wear the darn thing every time you exit your truck. We would hate to see you get run over at a stop, OR on the freeway !!!

As a retired vol fire/rescue and EMS worker for 35 years, I’ve seen a lot. But one of the most dangerous things you can do is to be on the side of the road at accident scene. So you be extra careful in the future. I don’t want you to get hurt. May I suggest you get a reflective vest or coat you could throw on in an emergency. That would help you to be seen. I applaud you for helping out. Not many people do that anymore. If I’m ever broken down on the side of the road, I could only hope you’d be the one who’d stop to help! Keep up the vids. I’m loving them! Be safe out there!

I forgot my vest at home. This was a brand new truck and I keep it on a hook by the door and just missed it on my way out. Usually I have everything packed into my truck so I’m ready for anything

Another great one! They all are really. Great team work on the fire. I've stopped at a few in my years of traveling. Once in the middle of the night on a large highway ramp; the driver was trying to get stuff out of his cab while it was going up almost had to drag him away from the truck. I get it though, felt bad for him. Great shots of the FF's putting the fire out! They must have loved that!

Shelby, It was good to hear those air brakes and see those 4-way flashers come on with you setting up those reflectors and waving your light. That was great. Please make sure you wear your reflective PPE next time. Nice job, be safe.
