Watching this for my 9 wk old Cane Corso puppy. My dog will walk on a leash, sits and goes to door to go potty. I open the door wide and she sits before walking out of door. Thanks to Joel.
Same !!! My boy does the same! & I also have him to the point if he wants to get a treat or anything he has to acknowledge me first by looking at me. I've trained him to look at me on command! & sit before leaving outside and entering in doors. The teachings from YT really helps with patience, persistency and consistency.
Pickles is such a cute dog! All the more reason to teach her to be her best and not get away with bad behavior just because she's small or cute. It's great the owners got training for her right away so she has a better life as a well behaved dog. Thank you for this super puppy training video!
"You can't punish a behavior the dog doesn't know." Damn, I wish more people who try to train their own dogs knew that one! I've seen so, so many of them use punishment in an attempt to *teach* the behavior -- they think that if a dog gets harshly corrected until they get it right, they'll get it right faster. Usually, all that happens is that the dog shuts down in fear and stops being able to learn at all until it stops.
The correcting helped on our Havashu (mix between a Bichon Havanese & Shih-Tzu). I know you say, that you dont like it too much on small dogs, but it worked wonders. She is now 1 years old and SO good on a leash. She isnt reactive on leash when there are other dogs, she only looks at other dogs, like she's curious. Your videos are truly a life saver! :D
I love your videos. I think it's important to know that harnesses are beneficial because when a dog pulls on a leash attached to a collar, it can cause extreme problems like collapsed trachea, which causes the dog to gag and struggle to breathe at times. (like excitement)
i love your method, it has been working great on my old dogs ! please do more videos on puppy trainning, i just had a new puppy comming home. a big fan from Vietnam
Omg, this is perfect , I have a 3 month old staffie who I’m trying to get used to walking on leash. She pulls and chocks herself out ! I’m switching from collar to this ! Thank you !
Man I honestly love your videos. So informative. I never click on videos so fast! We have a 11 week old chocolate lab pup and we will be using your guidance from this video going forward. Thank you for everything! :)
So glad to see you did a puppy video since I always wondered what you meant by being gentle with them. Could you do a video about fear/dog reactive puppies? Mine was unfortunately undersocialised when we got her
I have watched your videos for the last year. I love the balanced methods. Got a Havanese recently. Today little Fabio, 6 months, discovered your method too with this video. He sat down and watched from putting the leash to the end. Very cute. I think you’re a hit.
Our 11 week black lab (boing! boing! boing! 🤣😂🤣) has been here 2 weeks and is ready for some lessons. Wonderful, smart, energetic when not sleeping, brave etc. Sleeps thru the night in an indoor pen. Starting sit, down, stand, spins, off, off-leash come to heel position (then free to run again). Sits for meals and before doors, excellent recall to name, runs into both large and small crates (not locked in more than a minute yet), beginning retrieve and drop... veeerrrry food motivated. 😋 One very short leash lesson went well...tug, call, treat 👍Not on a walk yet. Potty on pads getting better, potty outside increasing. Labra-gator mouthing with shark teeth is insane...I'm wearing leather gloves while trying to inhibit it.
Just wanted to say, for any future readers-- I very much suggest not using a puppy pad if you can avoid it. Start potty training the moment you get home, don't even allow accidents in the house. The moment they wake up from a nap, get done eating or drinking, or just finished playing, take them outside. If an accident does happen in the house, clean it immediately with enzyme cleaner, and take any poo outside to where you'd like them to go potty. Potty pads just teach them its okay to go in the house. You don't want them to think it's okay. -I have a 3 year old GSD mix who has never had an accident indoors, a (Now passed away) 13 year old Lab mix who only had a handful mainly due to old age, and a 9 week old GSD puppy that has only had accidents due to the runs after deworming.
@@Drux.i I totally agree it did add some confusion, leading to more accidents. Unfortunately, we had weeks of insane downpour and so I justified pads inside her pen for overnight and by the door. I had to learn she is a multiple pee-er and to keep walking to allow for the repeats (once, she peed 7 times!) But at 16-17 weeks the magic happened and she became 98% reliable to either walk to the door or, my fav, sit at my feet and stare at me 😁
Loved watching actual training in action. Loved the details… how much treat each time, what to do when they don’t really do what you asked. This was super valuable. Thank you!
When I adopted my adult 70 lb pitbull, I tried walking him with only his collar and a leash, and he had such a bad pulling habit that he pulled a muscle in my shoulder pretty badly! Some dogs like a big pitbull can pull hard enough to hurt a person, which mine did. I ended up using a gentle leader. which was great. We have finally worked it out now that he does not need the gentle leader any longer. The leash is loose!
@@rando348 Once your dog is no longer pulling on walks using the Gentle Leader (GL) you will want to begin this process for its use. Towards the end of the walk move the leash clip from the Gentle Leader to a regular collar while leaving the GL on your dog. Your dog is less likely to pull the last 10 minutes or so of a long walk. (this is a rinse and repeat process and isn't always going to be successful. My dog needed 4-5 months (he is a husky however) before he was able to walk on collar.)
Yeah my pit destroyed my wrists… I have gentle leader too and it’s our 3rd walk and he’s a completely different dog. He just still goes crazy when he sees another dog lol… he will get over it soon
Just found your videos. Previously had a wheaten terrier. Great dog, submissive enough that training was a breeze. Loved him for 12 years. His successor is an Airedale terrier puppy who is now 5 mo old. VERY smart and sweet but more willful than my wheaten was. She has learned all her basics already but thought I might need some help with training a more assertive puppy. 6 week AKC puppy class ended up being a waste of time. She already knew what they were teaching and it was all treats and positivity. When I asked for help on specific problems, like avoiding a collar grab, they smiled and shrugged. So disappointing. She’s getting bigger and has decided it’s okay to not do as I ask, even with a treat sometimes. Thanks for helping me understand I can’t expect perfection at this point and that I can be slightly firm with her if needed. She’s currently a velociraptor (fast with lots of teeth) and jumping and mouthing are an issue. I’m way more confident that we’ll get through it and she’ll be a great dog in the end with your methods. She really does want to please, I just need to train myself with your help to show her how great life can be when she follows me. Please never stop making these videos.
This is great, I'll have to re-watch it when the time comes to leash-train our future Beagle puppy, who will move in with us end of November. Watching your videos definitely helps with the puppy jitters,.
not sure if you've already done one but a tour of your property would be cool as it relates to the dogs! it looks like at 4:13 the dogs are fenced off but can watch and see what's going on which they probably enjoy. thanks for all your content, we just got 2 puppies and i've been looking for a good youtube channel and this is it for sure
I love your videos and feel like you're giving the best advice and tips around here, but sometimes it seems too easy when you do it. I have been able to put the harness and leash on when I'm feeding my puppy. But whenever I stop, the puppy starts to struggle and try to bite the harnnes and the leash. I would like more videos of dogs that are having this kind of difficulty and how to fix them.
I’m binge watching you and this is MUCH more my comfort level with my 3 month old… a trainer came over and yanked his neck to quiet him in his crate. I found cheese and cucumbers to be a MUCH better pacifier. Switching back to my harness 🫡
Yes, more puppy training videos please. We have one 4 months-old toy poodle mix Bichon. She only can do her business on the grass, which I hated. Grass in North Carolina is full of critters.
Perfect. Found this just as I needed it, exactly when I needed it. Thank you. More would be awesome... and maybe something on how to correct a tiny (7 years old) who can't be on collar because it would injure his trachea? (yeah, I'm insane enough to have both LOL)
I know this is quite late, but have you looked at the Gentle Leader head collar? It's almost like auto-correct for leash pulling/lunging/rushing off, as the dog's own movements tugs its head back around towards you.
@@redwitch12 The tiny (Yorkie) is a little George Jefferson and laughed at the haltie like it was some sort of insult to his nobility. I keep trying with almost every suggestion I can. I'm sure he'll outlive all of them at this rate.
I've got a 3 month old American Terrier mix that we rescued. I've seen some videos of your dog correction training with Bosco and Prince and was highly impressed. Going to go through your videos to inform myself better on how to train my puppy. She's awesome and I've got some progress but I'm ignorant in puppy training. Her and my daughter have become best friends but she's in the teething stage so I'm cautious at this time. Ice cubes and frozen carrots seem to be helping.
@Nora Rivkis lmao the puppy was. She's 9 months old now. I've got her inside and outside potty trained, she obeys a few commands, listens when I call (mostly lol), checks in from time to time when outside and just wants cuddles and loves from ppl. I tend to not use a lead and she'll roam but not out of my sight. Very protective of my daughter, couldn't ask for a better dog.
@@elkuko8686 She sounds awesome. Give her some pets from me, won't you? I don't have a dog right now because we've got five cats and we're moving next year, and that's quite enough to handle! But once we settle into our new home, I'm hoping to get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy.
Yes please. !!!! I just got my puppy he is 2 months old and a American bulldog boxer mix. I want to make sure I’m doing everything properly so he grows into a stable healthy happy dog !! I’m nervous as he is going to be big so I want to be ready and responsible
I have been attempting with limited success the loose leash walking techniques, not pulling etc with a 5 month old great pyrenees...so much patience must be used.
The 2 month old Great Dane is resource guarding my bed and couch! Can you do a video on that! I’ll go back and look in case you have some info on that.
Can I add that this method worked with my older, much bigger 9 month-old in a harness as she will not wear a collar after her previous owner used a prong collar and cheap shock collar which would burn holes in her neck? The correction is a little different than with a collar, I use my wrist in an upward direction rather than the low side pull Joel uses with a gentle leader, it took me about 20mins to stop her pulling like a freight train. She now heals perfectly after a week.
Hi Joel! First of all, excellent channel and very helpful content. I know you said in another video that leash reactivity is best achieved at around 9 months as the dog's brain is more mature. I have a 4 month Rhodesian mix that weighs 17 kg already and LR only functions when we're alone or little distraction. At the sight of people and other dogs, he flies. What advice can you give for strong puppies like him? Thank you so much!
I’d love to see some puppy training with giant breeds! Happy to volunteer mine 😂 2 and 4 month old Great Danes. I feel like I have to be very strong towards training bc of their size but they are still just puppies. Feeling guilty over here.
Loving the channel, I have been trying your method with my new German Shepard puppies, and so far it's challenging as I am doing both at the same time. But I am only doing 15 min max on the sessions and I am seeing improvements 👏
>"I am doing both at the same time" That's your problem. If you have two puppies, you can't put your whole effort into neither. And puppy training requires tons of focus. Even just one puppy (or dog) can be too much for some people.
Question I have a lab cross (pittie I think) who is just over 4 months old. He PULLS… should I be doing the puppy loose lease training or your older dog method with the small pop to correct? He is super strong even at 30lbs.
We have 3 months old golden retriever, it gets in to fight with me , my dad when ever we control her from grabbing things and other mischief . She has become very dominant. Your suggestions would be of great value.
You say we can fix pulling later and we need to be mellow with these young dogs. Pickles is 4 months old. At what age is it appropriate to be "less mellow" and more "hard core" on fixing the pulling?
What do you think of a house line? Many trainers on RU-vid recommend it, but my small pup likes keep chewing on it and every time it's like a fight when trying to take it out from her mouth...btw, great to see some videos of small breed training!
Can you show how to solve problem with dogs that get anxiety/shut down with a harness? Ears go to the side and tail is tucked in back; doesn’t eat treats because of high anxiety and almost crawls over to a spot and lays there and won’t move. Various techniques have failed: treat, treat, treat, touching with harness, leave harness on in the house, distract by doing it at favorite location. Not fear based I don’t think as dog eats treats off of it, walks by it, smells it and even lays next to it.
Can you do a video with a large 5 month old dog please and more with two dogs at a time. I have sibling husky german Shepard mixed and I’ve been walking them separately. Is it too soon for the gentle leader collar? Should I walk them together?
I have a 5month old papillon mix boy. He is very small and me and my family loves it when he jumps up on us. He is so small that it does not bother. Is this a mistake? I do want him well trained.... it is just him being happy to see us and showing affection, but I do wonder if it is healthy to allow it. Thanks in advance
I have a 6 month old rough collie. It is rare that he ever gets ahead of me on a walk - instead he is lagging so far behind me. What would the correct correction be for this???
I have a very small breed puppy (around 6 lbs) in an area of the country that gets very cold. He's high energy, but during long stretches of the year it's too cold to take him out for walks. Also, I'm older and disabled and frequently am unable to take him out even in good weather. I know it's a departure from what you usually do, but it would be really helpful if you could do a video on how to teach a dog to walk on a treadmill. I've tried, but he just gets terrified as soon as it moves and refuses to move forward.
Maybe you can just play with the pup.? Put him in one room and do a treasure hunt through the house with his favorite toy at the end. Does he follow the same path as you did or does he go right for the treats? Build up his confidence by putting one treat in one box. As soon as he keeps getting it consistently, can add a cue like Find it, seek, or search. Thinking games and toys will help tamp down his energy level. My one Dobe only eats his lunch out of a snuffle mat. If I put it in his dish, it stays in the dish. Sara Ondrako has a great video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket. Just getting him out of the house to go to a store should help.
My 4 mo old standard poodle is strong already. She yanks my arm pretty good. She pulls me. I need to nip this pulling in the bud. Hate the puppy harness. Don’t know what else to do/use
I just got a 6wk old blue heeler that will eventually be trained as a PTSD dog for my daughter.... I want to start her basic training asap followed by good dog then her specific task... What is the general age does each stage need to be expected to be done/mastered by? I dont want to rush her or expect to much from her to soon
Check out Nate Schoemer who had his own TV show where he would take shelter dogs and train them to be service dogs. Doggy U is another one. There are a lot of puppy raising programs so they start as soon as you get your dog. How are things going with your training - not sure if your dog has taken the service dog test yet. I believe they have to be at least one year old before they can be tested.
I have a 5 month old German pointer lab cross. He's getting quote tall now and still pulls on lead. Am i OK to use the correction method properly or is he too younge? I use collar and lead not sure if gentler would be better now? Thank you very much
Check out Joel's Rottweiler named Creed video for the foundation video for why dogs don't pull on leash. Not going anywhere unless the dog is on your page. Am sure you probably are good by now, right? Hope that helps.
I have a basset hound. She sniffs the whole walk, would your method still work on a basset. She stays on one side, she is getting better with the pulling (trying your method) but what about sniffing? she is 2 years old.
Would I still do this same thing with my 6 month old puppy and my 14 month old puppy? I am having a lot of pulling from both dogs. And they are barking at a lot of things. Bella my 14 month old will bark when there isn’t even anything there as soon as I take her outside and she barks at other people and dogs. My 6 month old pulls and barks at everything. Any tips would be great! Thanks!
This morning my puppy got out of her harness!! We were right behind my house when the neighbor’s mean female pit barked at us frantically! Lilly got loose, but luckily she was too tired to run far. She was biting me hard on both hands as I tried to put her harness back on. It seemed like a half hour before I could put it back on! Why does Petsmart sell that garbage? The Doctor was right about it! I’m getting her a new gentle leader! She has escaped from her collar too! She has a big chest and a small neck.😎🌺🐶🦋🐲🐳🐕
I have an 8 month old chihuahua that kinda keeps to herself and a 3 month old husky mix. My husky keeps rough playing and nipping my chihuahua. What should I do about this?
my adult dog is the size of Pickle. I’ve been using a slip lead to teach loose leash walking. should I be using a harness then? is there danger that the loose leash will hurt his neck?
Like Joel says Pain messes with their brains. Is the pup walking beside you without pulling? The slip lead should be high up on the neck and it's a pop and release, but most people use it as a choke and a drag. That can cause trachea damage, especially if the dog continues pulling/choking himself. Hope that helps.
