I own my OG Nupste Northface jacket from the 90’s. I’m 43 years old now and around 200lbs. The medium still fits me. I buy XL in nearly everything now. All that means is I think a Medium from the 90’s is slightly larger than a Medium now. It is very short though.
Yes! That’s what I’ve been hearing - the original from the 90’s was a better fit overall. And the new retro 96 is shorter than the original. Though both are short. Appreciate you sharing Jon!
What's good brother. Honestly this is a very tough coat for taller people. Do you know your chest or waist size? That would better help me. But if I had to take a swing I'd say XL, just off of your height alone. I'm 6 feet and I liked the Large for length, just not the width aspect.
Love the video, but for anyone wondering. It’s suppose to be that short. All the sizes will seam very short as that was the style back then. If anyone likes these jackets but wants a longer version check out the Parka versions. They’re quite a bit longer but not as puffy. I personally like the normal nuptse over the parkas. The jacket would look a lot more odd if it was the same dimensions but longer. Back then everything was tailored perfectly so it went with the style of everything, and for mountain summiting/skiing and snowboard I believe they didn’t want anything extra that didn’t need to be there. If you watch the dumb and dumber movie (dumb reference I know) when they’re in aspen Colorado.. Almost all the jackets and snow pants are really short and that’s how they were meant to be. But again I love you’re video. This jacket is very popular in the street wear culture for anyone who doesn’t already know
These jackets are cut short since the original use was in alpine climbing. Space is needed around the hips for a climbing harness. Whatever happens in town is secondary at best.
@@BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists this is the correct answer, exactly the same reason why the mountain jacket is cut short. I've had people argue with me about this claiming it's nonsense, but I have the 90s north face catalogs that explain the nuptse design.
Heres my take. If you go smaller than your regular size and compress the down with a tighter fit, you loose loft which means you loose heat. It is supposed to be puffy and there should be room for layering underneath. Dont compress it, or you will loose heat, just like a sleeping bag. Same idea. StyleFunction
Hey Carol! Thanks for stopping by and dropping a comment (: oh yea, online is everything these days and I know this coat fits a bit strange. So I’m glad the video was helpful for ya. Be safe and well out there!
The key to any of these heavier down jackets is the draw string. If he had pulled the draw string snug, the entire jacket would follow the body better and eliminate much of the space since the draw string pulls the inner shell closer. You do not want to wear down snug since it will compress some of the insulating loft. I can wear a size medium with little underneath, but I usually go with the large to get that gentle hang. For perspective my chest is 43 inches. If you are between medium and large, go with the large. Of course it will also have more room for a down vest etc under it. Why does this matter? I use a nupste jacket for winter work and they work very well down into the single digits with a wind. This is not going to be the case if your jacket is more snug.
Nuptse measurements by size Measurements taken with jacket laid flat on the floor. If you want an idea of how the jacket is, lay down a jacket you have at home and compare the measurements. The Nuptse is about 1-2 inch shorter than your typical North Face Jacket. I had the same problem choosing L over M because of the length issue, but now I'm ok with buying size M, because it really fits better and the length is quite the same (I'm the same size as you). Thanks👍
Right on ... great call! I actually started off with the Large and found all the exact same things. I was swimmin in it a little bit. It was loosey goosey around the waist ... and still short waisted and sleeves not that long, so I ordered the medium. Again, like you said, rather snug, but not uncomfortably binding anywhere. Nothing gained for me in a plus marginal way by wearing the large. Still short waisted, still slightly skimpy in sleeve length and honestly, while the medium is right on the edge in neck tightness when fully zipped, the large was too loose at the neck. If you ask me, the jacket runs big. Now Marmot ... Marmot runs true to size. I have 2 Marmot jackets (not parkas) and they're both good fitting Larges with an inch to two inches more length at the waist (just enough to cover your belt line and the very top of the butt) and 1-2 inches longer in sleeve length- enough to stretch your arms out without your wrist skin going full exposed between jacket cuff and end of glove. I really do like the look of hoody under the Nuptse ... that's why I got it.
Been wearing mine since the 4th grade. Literally. My parents got me a large because they knew I’d grow out of it. I still wear it 😂 I can’t believe it’s back in style. I got made fun of for years now everyone asks where I got the specific colorway 🤣
It’s all down to personal preference but length is never a criteria when choosing one’s size. One should only go by the size chart. For this cat, since he’s got a 42’ chest, he should go with an L and use draw strings to make the jacket more form fitting if that’s what he’s after.
Thanks for the vid it helped me find my size. I'm 183cm, 115kg (250lb), 36" jeans, bit of dad belly. I went for XL. Size large was only just too small for me but the large is noticeably loose. I could wear both with or without a hoodie because the down compresses. XL is at least an inch longer than the L, but also at least that much wider as well so that makes it loose, which is fine if you want the oversized look. I wear XL in all other North Face jackets.
@@daltonlamari9446 Not sure tbh but for what its worth I stuck with the XL and have no regrets. It's noticeably bigger than the L especially if you have it unzipped but the extra room allows for a lot more flexibility in layering :) oh and its freaking warm too!
@@daltonlamari9446 oh it puff's out for sure, you'll look huge, especially if you rock in unzipped. I think sticking with your regular size is the way to go. No need to drop a size and it be too tight
@@daltonlamari9446 With a hoodie under and your regular size you'll have no trouble. I think it puffs out the same with or without a hoodie tbh! Let us know what you think when you grab one

Thanks very helpful for getting the right size. I didn't really wanted to spent $350 on a wrong sized jacket, so this gave me the right impressions of this jacket
My pleasure Jakob (: Very glad that you found this video helpful and it gave you an idea of what to expect. Because yes, spending 350+ on a coat and not having it fit is not a place you want to find yourself ha. Be safe and well out there brother !
So just an update on a comment I made a few days ago here .. I am about 188lbs.. 5.11 size 34 waist .. and 44 chest..every one suggested and also the size chart on the North face website.. to get size LARGE .. well that's WRONG!!. I bought large and it was HUGE. So I had to exchange it (ONCE AGAIN)..for the MEDIUM.. and it fits perfectly.. now I say once again because this is actually my fourth time going thru this with The North face.. Few years back with a Nuptse... then later with a Gotham 3 and then again with a Mcmurda parka.. and it's always the same shit .. lol.. some reason I thought it would be different now ... smh.... anyways .. the truth is these North face jackets run ..BIIIGGGGG.. they are not TRUE TO SIZE .. and I hear very few people saying this ... ? .. HOPE THIS HELPS ANYONE..
Hey brother! Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment (: I agree, I liked the medium better too hah. Appreciate the support. Keep safe out there
It’s an interesting design I just received the brown one and it’s my first north face coat and I heard these coat normally fit nice and gives enough room but I had no idea how small this model is although I must say I’m a tall person with shoulders and I’m normally an extra large so that’s the size I got, at first I was very confuse at the sizing but then I came to realize it’s just a slimmer model to what I’m use to, so when I pull the strings on the sides of the jackets I kinda felt a lot better and tired sweaters and everything will not recommend wearing a huge sweater with this model, but there is no need to size up because it fits just right just a slim fit it was made to be a slim coat
hi so i am a men’s medium and on vinted i bought a women’s medium. except from the slight size difference, is there any other differences? would i be able to wear it?
Thanks for taking a moment to drop a comment Kev! Really am grateful for the support and happy the video was helpful. Hope you’re keeping safe and well out there!
Your video really helped me out a lot. I'm 177cm, 80kg. I bought the jacket in size M. It fits very good on the arms, chest etc. But at first I was thinking maybe it is a little bit too short on the body, that's why I was wondering if I should return it and go a size up. But since you mentioned there isn't much of a difference in the length between the M and the L, i should probably just stay with the Medium, right?
What’s good brother! Yea, if you’re looking for more length, the Retro doesn’t offer much moving up in sizes. Though moving up in size will add lots of width. So if adding a lot of extra width isn’t something you’re cool with, the tiny bit of added length probably won’t be worth it. So yea, I’d stick with the Medium -I hope that helps a bit (:
Thanks for the kind comment bro, much appreciated 🙏🏼 If you want a more fitted look go for the Large. But if you want some extra room go for the XL. Do you know your waist and or chest size? That will help me out a lot in for sure giving you the best answer
My pleasure brother! I’d say this, if you want the jacket to fit like the large fits me in this video, go for a size medium. And if you want a more fitted look, go for the size small. Hope that helps (:
Hi! Can you help me choosing my size for a North Face Thermoball Eco please. 1.87cm tall and 175lbs athletic build with a 30-32 inch waist. Thinking between size M or L. Would love to hear your opinion before I buy it, thanks.
LOL...well hopefully the video suggestion confirmed you made a good buy size wise ha. I hear ya though. I first experienced that a couple years ago. Phone was on airplane mode, had a conversation in a flight about Lightroom...then had ads on my computer the next day for photoshop Lightroom 🧐 So crazy how much what we talk about gets picked up.
@@Joshua88Graham yeah it did thanks bro! I was worried that I got medium and that it would be too baggy cos it took me ages to find one but it looks good
Hey brother - do you know your chest or waist size? That would help me more. But honestly, I think you may have to go with a Large. I'm 183/184 cm and 185 pounds and if I was any taller or heavier I would not want to wear the M. Its very close to being too small for me already. But your waist and chest size will be a big factor. Though I'm guessing you need a Large
Hello, nice video. I'm nervous to buy one. Still don't know if i should buy M or L. I'm 182cm and 85kg. I also plan to wear it with hoodie most of the time.
Hi i need help, im planning on buying this jacket, I'm around 170cm in height and 55kg in weight, I'm planning on a little looser/ a little oversized look (same look as the size L in the vid). should i get XS or S?
Hey there Jason! If you want the oversized/wide look - I'd say go for the Small over the XS. It will definitely be most similar to how the Large fits me in this video. Hope that helps (:
Josh hello again buddy in my country i cant order directly from oficial website with 2 days searching i found a nuptse in a site that can deliver here but the jacket is only in large im 1,79 with around 78-80 kg it depends cause gyms closed from pandemic about 4 months now what do you think about L size will it also be good? Or i will look rediculous?
Hey brother! The large will be fine for length, but expect it to be quite baggy on you regardless. If you don’t mind that oversized baggy look, it will be okay. Just know the large is quite wide sadly. In my opinion I think the medium would look better. I know they’re hard to come by, but better to have one that you like wearing...cuz to have it and not be happy with it would suck :/
Hey brother! Thanks for stopping by! I think a medium on you, will be similar to how a large looks on me in that video. And a size small will be like how the medium fits on me. If you want a more snug fit, go for a small, but I think a medium would still be a really good choice for you (: Hope that helps a bit
@@Joshua88Graham Thanks for the reply bro, from what you and chris have told me ive decided to go with medium. Now I just gotta find the coat in black which is near impossible in the UK lol. Thanks for the advice bro
I’m 5’9 165 lbs, I have a medium in black but am planning to buy a purple one, he one I have is a bit short towards the bottom of the jacket so should I get a large?
Hello, great video. I was thinking about buying one, second hand at 190usd because brand new it's 600usd and it's quite expensive. Do u recommend this jacket? I know TNF it's a great clothing brand, but it's worth it? I take care of my clothes very well, so it won't be a trouble breaking it. PD: the jacket I saw it's in very good condition
Hey my friend. I made another video on the Nuptse I think would really be helpful, so maybe go take a look as I kinda dig into all those things. But if I’m being honest, the coat is mostly for style. At the cost of one these days, I don’t think it’s worth it. Unless you have lots of money to spend
I’m also 6ft, and when bought my nupste jacket I went with the L instead of the M. It is quite better in length but not that much of a difference. Keep in mind that these jacket are designed this way. But anyways I figured L just wasn’t the fit for me, it looks kinda weird.
What’s up man! Thanks for sharing and taking a moment to comment. It for sure is an interesting style coat. I think regardless of size, like ya said, it’s just a short coat. So ppl just have to accept it ha. It’s what it is. Did you end up returning it? Or did you move down a size? Happy New year btw!
@@Joshua88Graham Happy New Year to you as Well brother. I bought it for like $130, and I managed to sell it for $200. I couldn’t have turned down that offer. I literally got paid to use it a few months 😅 Bought me a new jacket, but to anyone who sees this: it’s a good and warm jacket and I def recommend.
I just bought this jacket in medium and went on RU-vid to see reviews and I’m keeping the medium. At first I thought it was too short and i should get an L but the extra space would be too much. The medium fits perfectly (5’11 - 90kg)
Hey Abigail, thank you for stopping by! Honestly, I think a small would have been a better option. The medium and small length wise won’t be too different - but yea, it’s gonna be a lot of extra width you don’t need :/
I bought myself an L at a height of 184 (6.3 ft).. But in the morning I passed back, as the jacket gains volume after packaging and, accordingly, is shortened in hands and length.. And it's not so comfortable sitting on me, and if you also wear a hoodie under it, then it's completely tight..Waiting for XL.
I hope the XL treats ya better. It’s very interesting how moving up sizes doesn’t really buy too much more length. At 6’3 you def wanna have a coat that’s not short. Can’t be comfortable at all - let me know how the XL works for you! Thanks for commenting and Happy New Year!
@@atticus2049 Update: XL is quite baggy and (as he said above with his large) there’s loads of room. So have returned it and got the L and it’s way more form fitting. It’s just very slightly shorter but it’s not much different to XL.
@@hamzahislam7269 I wear it both with and without hoodie. It doesn't make tonnes of difference to be honest ! The fit has been fine and I've had it for over a month now 😃
So you know your chest and waist size. That will help me a bit better. I’m guessing if you want the more fitted look, a small. But sadly both the small and medium will be short, as they are short coats :/
My retro nuptse is XXL and it is black. I have got the jacket in a bigger size because I always use the elastic cords at the bottom of the jacket to make it so short as possible. I think it is very cool to wear it cropped and when it is a bit boxy.
hey man! i’m usually a small but i ordered a XS, would that fit like similarly to you like the medium. cause i like the crop fit as well. i’m like 5’3-5’4 150lb, board shoulders. would that be okay? i’m scared that i might be a small lol
If I’m being honest, some North Face products are, some are not. I’d say their more style focused stuff, like the Nuptse. Probably not worth it. But their function oriented stuff (Gotham, McMurdo etc) are worth the money.
Hi, Im 16 years old, around 5,9ft tall and i weight around 132lbs. Should i get a size M or S? I kinda want it a bit bigger since i will still grow a little..
@@Joshua88Graham Hi Josh I’m 174cm and weigh around 71kg what do you recon would be the best option for me baring in mind I want to still wear a hoodie underneath mine most of the time ? Thanks
@@rayanradi405 hey there Ryan. Thanks for stopping by! I’m 183 cm and weigh around 80 ish kg. I think a medium would still do fine for you (: And probably would fit less snug then the medium on me - which gives you options to layer with sweaters and hoodies. I think a small may fit a tad bit too tight. Hope that helps ya !
Great video. Quick question I'm 5′9″, how ever I'm much heavier in weight 210 lbs. I got both a L and and XL. The L is not as fitting, but the XL is really REALLY big. I went with XL. Was that a smart move?
Hey brother! Thanks for taking a moment to comment - appreciate the support (: Tbh, the Nuptse is a hard coat to size properly due to its length being shorter. Though, I will say having a coat that's a bit bigger is always better then having one that's too small. At least you can wear a sweater underneath if need be, winch will help with the fit. What was the problem with the L - too tight?
@@saininj Of course, my pleasure bro ! I think you made the right choice if the L is too snug like that. Just layer with a hoody or sweater and it will help a lot if its a little wide with the XL.
I'm 5'7 and in planning on getting this. I do like my jackets quite long so do you think I should a large? My 1985 mountain jackets are all large apart from one which is a medium but they all fit me well so just wondering what size I should get.
Honestly man, this jacket doesn’t add much length going from a medium to a large. Just a lot of width. So unless you are a wide or thick dude, I think a large will like really off. These are short coats, so if you like your jackets long. This probably won’t be the coat for you :/ It’s a weird one
My pleasure bro! Check out the HMLYN - I did a video on that too. It’s similar style but longer. But either way yes, steer clear of this one if you want a longer coat ha
You should always have room in a winter coat to wear sweater. The medium looks very small and there was really no way to wear a shirt and sweater. The coat is a boxy coat to begin with, so you may not even want to keep the jacket at all. Go with the Large, as the medium sleeves just look too short with the Medium…!
I totally agree. I think when it comes to a winter coat, you always want to option to layer up. So having extra space and having it be a bit baggier is always the better option. Thanks for sharing and taking the time to comment!
I think a large is fine. Though it does have lots of extra room on me - the only reason I enjoy the medium is because it’s not my main go to winter coat. If I were to use the Nuptse as my main winter coat I’d go for a large - just so I have a bit more freedom to layer comfortably. So I think you’ll be fine (: How much do you weigh? That’s more a factor then height with these things I’d say
@@opbeats5524 Hey brother! I would say a medium would fit you well. We are the same height but I have a good 25-30 pounds / 13-14 kg on you. And the medium is quite fitted for me. So I think it would be a good place to be size wise for you (: Hope that helps man!
Do you know your chest or waist size? I think that a Large should def work for you though. An XL would be crazy wide. As we are around the same height and weight.
These coats are gonna fit you pretty much like how it fits me. So if you want a fitted look, go for the M. Just know it’s a short coat. Otherwise go for the Large for the more oversized look. Hope that helps (:
What size should I get at 6’3 185? I had the TNF Diablo before, but I decided to return it for the Numptse. I had size L on it and it fit perfectly although after seeing it fits short I’m considering going for the XL
@@georgewills7307 got a size L and it fits me great, XL would be too wide for me in the chest and it only adds like an extra inch in length, but i think the length is fine especially when ur sitting down or have hands in your pockets its really nice
