In today's podcast, I present Angus from the Alsta Watch Company: a man with a serious insight into recreating a brand whose heyday was the 1970s. Alsta has released a number of interesting pieces including the Surf N Ski, Nautoscaphe and the watch worn in Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' by Richard Dreyfuss.
Today, we talk about Jaws, watch movements and the magic at the heart of some of the best watches under £1000.

Thanks for sharing this new brand with us Armand. I wish Angus luck bringing his visions to fruition and succeeding in a very competitive spot in the watch market. Looking at the pictures, it does seem to have it's own style and isn't an homage to other established watches. Out of curiosity, I was wondering where you get your reliability figures on movements (ETA vs Seiko). Internet opinions are usually based on anecdotal information and not hard figures so it gets my attention when I hear hard numbers. From what one hears on some Seiko channels, there is an impression that some modern Seiko movements are not that good, but as I said it is anecdotal.

+Randy Allen: That's an extremely good point! As a side note, I think that there is an awful lot is misinformation online and, as you say, hard figures get one's attention. On the Seiko side, the information which I have which applies to the Seiko 4R and 6R families (I don't have any manufacturer info about the 8L as it is only used by Seiko themselves) as well as the Miyota 9000 series. This came from a few manufacturers and retailers. Unfortunately, they have to go unnamed but you will find these manufacturers featuring very prominent know on my channel. In general, they find that ETA movements are very susceptible to manual winding failures unless they are perfectly set up. In short, ETA movements can definitely outperform their more modest Japanese counterparts, but they need to be taken care of to do so. The Japanese movements, on the other hand, are far less highly-strung and operate much more consistently. As an example, I know that a major London retailer of Spinnaker dive watches using Seiko and Miyota movements has not had a single watch returned with mechanical issues. By comparison, ETA / Sellita movements have come back (from no particular brand) on a regular basis. For this reason, I can't help but favour a Seiko or Miyota movement at these sorts of prices.

Hi Armand... Im actually a Alsta collector, I decided to collect them because everything you find is often very limited. I have a Alsta Bowl-O-Date (bowling watch) with bowling pins as the markers, it's a fantastic piece that I paid little for. The company are a hidden secret for most, and only the deserved will discover them :)

Too expensive for an NH35 , very nice watch but would expect a ETA or Sellita.

Anno June 2021 Sellita SW200 is being used but their spring releases came too late with other brands bringing out new models, so many people I know have dropped out! IMHO well-priced, but for most people overpriced, anyway their website should give some more essential details such as movement photos, bracelet width, etc...

I’ve been aware of Allsta for a while. I think feedback initially was a bit lukewarm, but I like the look. Didn’t know the Speidel type strap was available. I’m considering them now. Would like to try one on wrist first, feel that quality first hand. Great interview. Curious to know what movement would be used for a chrono, or GMT. Interesting too, about the failure rates.

Lukewarm to say the least... good looking watch but they know Alsta'll need to step up as they're already using a Sellita SW200 movement, less marketing, better products!

13:25 End customers are not interested in the prototyping, R&D,... most couldn't care less in which box the watches come in ! Less marketing, better products... that's important!

Very nice design but really over-priced. I don’t get how you can say “make affordable pieces”. 900€ it’s definitely toward mid-range.
