Misinformed title. Nothing happened to the Shiv murti. Mahadev is timeless. Even if something happened to the murti, it still doesn't mean anything ominous. Simple murtis erected and then naturally degrading due to the elemental forces is just a witness to earth's changing climate. Murtis are just a spiritual symbol of the divine here in the mortal realm. Anyway, ma Ganga is so powerful that only Mahadev can hold her in his jata. Raja Bagirath had to lead Ganga so her power wouldn't completely wash everything away, according to the purans.
