Bec there are not thousands of Legionaires in Europe. Its not that crazy thing like the Civil War fans in US where the own Grandgranddads were fighting. The Roman is 2000 yrs ago and its really hard to find fans of this. The Romans were Invaders and interesting for historians, nor for fans. A good and authentic Roman Legionaire Armor costs ca 1500 € and its not easy to take on, and with pilum and Shield a bit space...and remember, east of the Rhine (from Cologne to east) there were no Romans so the eastern part of europe inc Swiss, Austria etc has no historic background. And for to reenact a battle you need all these Legionaires from the same historic age and Division, you cant mix Troops from Julius Caesar (50 bc), Augustus, Caligula and Vespasianus (80 ad) or later...you cant show a historic battle with Troops of Napoleon, US Civil War, First WW and Vietnam...@@huntclanhunt9697

@@noidontthinksolol That's actually a key part of the fighting's appeal now that I think about it. If grappling techniques would be limited to throws only the MMA would become a ton more exciting. @Boromir I don't see how anyone can come up with that figure, I guess my main point was people weren't killed for sport as is the common misconception, but when you're playing at war there's an obvious higher chance of fatal injury. Modern sports have a high emphasis on player safety since people were dying often in the early days of boxing, football, and even soccer. Many kingdoms in medieval Europe and the Modern Era continued these traditions with sports like jousting and fencing and duels, but it's the same premise, playing at war, not literal death for entertainment. However, I imagine many people at a race car track want to see someone wipe out, so naturally the audience was electrified when this happened in the arena, and it's been more embellished in history, especially Roman Catholic History.

@Michael Weir Deaths of animals? Sacrifices of animals were common practice in the ancient world, but they didn't sacrifice them and throw them away. They ate them, it was more of ritual slaughter. As far as murdering slaves for fun and entertainment, that's such a myth. Gladiators were athletes not slaves, and slaves were extremely coveted and essential to the Roman economy, so slaughtering them would be doubly stupid and the Romans weren't stupid or cruel enough to do these things. Not to mention, it was the chariot racing that was the main event attraction, not the mock fighting and executions.

No because people in death row are going to die and when participating in gladiatorial fights it whoever stays alive longest wins. Also it's unfair. Some super tough guy could be sentenced to death row for beating 3 people to death, and a skinny, frail guy could be sentenced to death row for recklessly driving and then killing someone during a crash. That would not be a fair match, one guy killed 3 people and is very tough, the other killed one and only by a car, not his body strength. The frail one would surely die.

You never saw a real Gladiator in front of you, right? So with Helmet, sword, shield, Iron Armor...? I met many of them bec i know one of them in personal (his fightname is Ursus and so he looks). I can tell you, you dont have a chance without real gladiator Training and the equipment. Forget all these knife fighting, Kendo, Samurai Black Belt stuff. I am a black belt, former Bodybuilder and educated Filipino Knife Fighter and i say: No way against a Gladiator.
