NASA is preparing for the first uncrewed commercial moon landing in the U.S.
The Odysseus lunar lander is projected to land at 4:24 p.m. on Thursday near the South Pole region of the moon.
It is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative and Artemis campaign.
The Odysseus was launched on Feb. 16 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It is carrying out several experiments, including technology developed right here in Clevland at the NASA Glenn Research Center.
Over the past 15 years, the Radio Frequency Mass Gauge has been designed to measure the amount of fuel in spacecraft while in micro-gravity. Erin Pisciotta, an Engineering Project Manager at NASA Glenn, says to think of it like the gas gauge in your car.
“When you're on Earth, gravity helps out quite a bit and the fluid in your gas tank stays level for the most part, and you're able to get a reading that way,” explains Pisciotta. “However, when you're in space, there's no gravity. The liquids on the walls, there are bubbles forming, so it's really hard to use the same type of gauging system.”

The comments address such a simple issue yet are completely valid. This is an achievement of mankind no matter what year it is, yet still has no publicity or available footage?

They have a camera that was supposed to record the spacecraft from outside during landing. Still waiting for the video data. Probably just editing the raw data.

In 1969, a camera on the bottom of the LEM showed the landing. But somehow you can't do this in 2024?

I may be wrong but this is a private company effort, and the moon landing was basically a war and companies were contracted and getting a video was basically the whole point

Yeah, seriously. What a great way to respark interest in the moon. Turn it into a 1930s radio show.

The budget of this effort is about the same as what the US spent on one Apollo space suit back then adjusted for inflation. You get what you pay for.

Every single person on the planet possesses the ability to livestream - and does - 24/7/365, and yet for whatever reason the Einstein that designed this mission neglected to pack one for the lander?! Modern day camera's are extremely light weight and inexpensive - impossible that one would not have been incorporated into this project!

Odysseus moon lander didn't have a live stream. But all the Apollo missions from '68-'72 did and the Chinese Jade Rabbit in 2013 and the Yutu-2 streamed a landing on the far side of the moon in 2018. Just another reason why the Americans keep trying to sanction China. They are clearly way behind in many aspects (notwithstanding it is still a good achievement).

No video on 2024?? Ooh that’s right back when we 1st “landed” there was a camera on it NOT! This just shows you that we were lied to the first time! They have to download the footage to a memory card and then upload it then send it with the Wi-Fi app they have up there on the moon!🤣.

Hello from Germany. I can't understand why there are no original images of the landing. The year is 2024, and humanity is building incredibly high-resolution cameras that work in even the smallest smartphones. The engineers are building a lunar lander that costs millions and are not able to install a few cameras to document the approach and landing!!!??? 💡🫵😂😆🤣
