In addition to 2.9% + .50 processing fee buyers will also pay a service fee of 10%. "Starting March 27, 2024, when you make a purchase, a service fee will be charged. The amount of the fee will be displayed as part of the final price of your item on the checkout page. This fee is charged to the buyer and may not be refunded, depending on the reason for a return.". This will kill sales. Sellers will have to lower prices to offset 12.9% fees buyers now have to pay plus they will still submit 20% off offers to boot. This is great news for eBay and other platforms that don't tack on buyer fees.

They were very disingenuous about the fees with their launch day promo material, they didn't mention the service fee at all. Even when you dig into the user agreement they never say what the percentage will be. The service fee is not 10% though. Example: we sold an action figure lot for $49.99 on the 28th. Buyer paid 2.40 payment processing fee and a service fee of 2.49. Another sale from the 29th for $15 - service fee of .90, processing fee of 1.16. Your point is still well taken.

@shedflips The service fee varies depending on the price, category and whatever other factors Mercari wants to throw in. It can be as much as 10%. In my case, the buyer service fee was close to 10%. Here is my recent sale: Sold Price: $70 Buyer Paid Fees: Service Fee: $6.30 Delivery: $8.99 Payment Processing Fee: $3.34 Tax: $9.04 The sad part is that Mercari doesn't have the decency to disclose to the buyer the exact fee amounts upfront. Buyers don't have a clue as to what their final cost is until they nearly commit to buy at checkout. Very shady.

What is going to happen when you sell some of those expensive cars or action figures and someone tears into the package and then returns them and the items are no longer new to resell with no recourse! This is insane!!! After my orders are complete I'm not selling anything new on Mercari and I'm considering deleting them all

I have had an increase in sales on Mercari since this change and Mercari is paying for the return shipping and you have 24hrs after you receive the return to contact Mercari about issues with the return before buyer is refunded from what i have understood

The $2 transfer fee is insignificant when compared to the "no fee" savings. I believe Mercari ultimately expects the market to adjust by way of sellers lowering prices to stay competitive against other sellers within the "no fee" model.

If sellers lowered their price to offset the mercari buyer fees, the seller would still make more on the sale on mercari versus paying ebays fees at the normal ebay price. So long as they sell enough to offset the $2 fee to get your money, which wouldn't take a lot.

exactly they sent a mass message on the app if your a seller you go tit they are SUGGESTING sellers LOWER there prices BECAUSE we are no longer paying fees since ebay suggest things and sellers do exactly what eBay suggest EVERY DAY what is any different with Mercari doing the same thing look ebay tells us to give our SHIPPING DISCOUNT to buyers, they tell us to OFFER FREE SHIPPING you think that is to benefit us HECK NO its to benefit EBAY to attract buyers buyers win with great deals and EBAY wins because they get fees no matter what the ONLY LOSERS in following what ebay wants are the SELLER that obeys and follows what ebay wants them to do THE POWER of suggestion is VERY REAL and VERY powerful google it "power of suggestion" and your correct about the $2 fee i already am use to it using the instant transfer so if you don't want to pay $2 on low money amounts you just let it grow over a week or a few weeks or just do once a month deposits once you get enough sales coming in there you can go from once a month to once ever other week to once a week i mean if you make $100 a week on there you can afford $2 to transfer you funds if you cant then you should not be reselling Period end of story! and compared to what sellers shell out to ebay every day its a drop in the bucket and if it helps them build there company to combat ebay im all for helping that movement at least the items i list on mercari SHOW Up on google and i don't have to pay a PROMOTED listings or off site ad fee!

She even took all my Madonna’s had every album and they are gone and she claims they were hers from her time and I said BS she didn’t come out until 1982, and I an 5 yrs the youngest.

I will also say talking about the younger generation. Our two daughters in their 30's don't shop on Ebay at all however they buy frequently on Mercari, Depop and Kidizen. Hopefully Mercari changes won't deter buyers.

My Mercaribsales are actually up! Remember, for example auction houses have a buyer premium up to 20% and people still buy stuff Just make sure you have in-demand inventory and you'll be fine.

I also feel where it states in the return policy that if you do make a return then you do not get the 2.9% +.50 processing fee or the 10% (or more) service fee back i think that will deter buyers from making FADULENT returns (this is what most sellers are worried about Fraudulent buyers) so basically all they get back is the price and maybe the shipping but not the buyer fees i feel having been reselling full time for 25 years on multiple platforms this will CUT way down on the fraudulent buyers

My opinion: If the seller gets the fees, etc. and the price equals that of other platforms then the fees do t matter. Yes sellers will have to drop prices but sellers already drop prices because many sellers short the items to make a sale. Maybe Mercari is planning a yearly membership where members get free buying and shipping, like Amazon. How would Mercari make money, deposit fees and membership fees. Just a thought.🤷🏻‍♂️

This is not a good move on Mercaris side. You dont want to add more cost to the buyers that drives buyers away. After check out the 10% & .50 is added to the total with shipping. Thats going to be a HUGE drawl back.

Mercsri says if the label was purchased through mercari when item sold then when returned you don't pay for the return mercari will cover that, if you used a different shipping such as pirate ship you pay for the return label.

I am in a very tight spot with Mercari until they actually explain who pays return Shipping. I actually contacted them and the response was vague and suggested it was Macari, but still didn't actually say it was Mercari. And if it is based on if you buy the label through Mercari then that changes things too.. I can still sell some of my other random stuff, but the main thing I usually sell is just up in the air for me until they actually let us know who pays return Shipping. And so much goes into it that I can't explain here, but I am still at a standstill with Mercari at the moment. I have to be honest when I first heard I would have a fee if I bought on there I was like, well I'm not going to buy anything there. But, honestly if something was cheaper, even with fees then I would still buy there. But, I already shop that way and compare for lowest prices, so who knows really?

Maybe Mercari should have just gone back to their seller fees from a few years ago that were less than eBay’s. That was a great seller attraction. Then they should have concentrated on getting their shipping offers/pricing in line with eBay’s. Leave the 3 day return window in place which is very attractive but stay away from the ‘for any reason’ nonsense. Mercari has a reputation for attracting the younger generation so they just may be on the cusp of a growth spurt because the younger generation won’t mind paying a 2% plus .50 cents fee for items they really want and want NOW. Also, collectors are like that also. We’ll see.

I really think Mercari is trying to make sellers into buyers / buyers into sellers. That's how each saves some money. I am curious how they will handle returns. If someone buys a $10 item, Mercari's not going to pay the shipping cost to have the item returned. They will probably just let the buyer keep the item and give everyone their money.

Mercari shut down here in the UK about 4 years ago having made little to no impact on eBay. Poshmark also closed its doors (with virtually no notice) last year. I've been selling on eBay since 2002 and looking at alternative platforms with decreasing optimism throughout. Since Yahoo Auctions closed down (anybody else remember them?) I've not found anyone else that generated any sales for me as a 'general' seller.

I think Mercari needs to come out with coupons that the sellers can offer their buyers so that if the sellers wanna cover some of those charges they can with a coupon. A 5% off coupon would take care of their 3% in fees plus give them 2% off their deal. I would do that as a seller.

We sell Japanese Pokemon boxes on Mercari, before the update we made sales every day. After the update (even with decreasing our prices) our sales are not nearly as good. I think a lot of buyers are turned away from the fees.

I think the original 10% seller fee wasn't bad at all, compared to Ebay and Poshmark. I think they should just charge the sellers 3% in lew of charging sellers 10% and the customers 2.9%for using credit cards.

100% I'm a reseller in Australia and eBay has the monopoly over here. Unfortunately we don't even have Mercari. I have just gone through 4 days of not being able to list because of a bug in eBay's system. Nothing I could do but wait for eBay to pull there finger out and fix the issue. Meanwhile my store traffic tanked and sales stopped.

This was interesting. These updates would be good now and then, to be honest I don't look at the ebay updates enough. Things I wish ebay would implement. 1: Condition description field when listing on the app. 2: A warning for vero that picks up keywords when creating a title, instead of allowing you to list and punishing you later. 3: Working out global shipping cost so people can buy multiple it's rather than having to pay shipping on each item.

I havn't tried Macari before but because of this video I'm going to give it a shot, there are lots or items that I have passed on knowing ebay takes 12% and the margins don't work but if Mercari doesn't charge sellers it would be great if I can sell items even half as quick as ebay. I tried importing my store URL from ebay and it tells me that some items have a issue and is making me do individual items which can be a issue with having 500+ items

With Mercari, I believe from what I read, the seller is still be charged a fee on items that were listed before the 27th. But you could relist the item. As far as the buyer paying the fee, there are many thrift stores now that charge a fee for using your credit card. Customers may be getting used to it. On a $50 item the fees are about $2.00 for the customer. That may not be enough to deter them. I am not sure I would be reducing my prices drastically. eBay needs to get on the ball and reduce the return window. Even if it was 5 days. It would still be better. If you import directly to Mercari, how does this affect your list perfectly? Manual delisting?

I use an iPad 99% of the time & recently many of my listings photos are blank. Your conversation about the new stuff eBay has coming made me wonder …. I’m curious if they’re using seller photos to get those settings accurate… reason I say it is like I mentioned, oftentimes many of my listing photos are missing or blank. Not because my photos are good or better than others at all, but because they need a particular item to use for the new type background they’re offering... IDK ??? Probably not, just a thought & more than likely, it’s due to my connections. Anyone else have that issue?

Mercari moving to auction house model " online like hibid or auctionnija" where buyer changed buyer premiums around 15 to 20%. There no real comparison. I found was their listed items to be cheaper need better items to draw buy to site. This change could help, the shipping cost are still too high to compete. This why i stop selling on the platform.

I literally have always done the 60 day return policy on eBay. In my mind I think if you do it 30 days it's right in the front of their minds they have 30 days to return it but if you do the 60 days that's such a long period of time there's not so much pressure and by the time the 60 day mark comes most of the time they've probably already forgotten about it. At least that's my thinking. And I definitely do not get a lot of returns. so it works for me.

Believe that many EBAY policies were modeled after, at the time, the business success called Sears which had the same return policy and many other approaches too. This is of course in the pre-PayPal times so it might have been a while (cue Lonnie audio).

that sounds like they are trying to recover the costs of using a credit card, which is usually around 2.9%. Makes you wonder if they will give an option to use an e-check or other option that is less expensive.

exact same thing eBay wants sellers do on eBay they want you as a seller on ebay to spend your CASH on ebay and buy things on ebay (they have been pushing this hard the last few months) so why cant merari do the same thing?? what's good for the goose is good for the gander as the saying goes

As a seller on mercari since this started sales has literally stopped even got a message from a potential buyer saying fees were crazy and he couldn’t purchase 😢

One way to possibly get that sale, is to send that interested buyer a message saying you will help to cover those fees by sending a lesser price for the item. Then you are essentially paying the “buyers” fees, instead of them.

@@hollyp4579 yeah soon as I went into my listing mercari said let’s lower your listings 10% to help the buyers so I did and finally had few sales but still took off $1-$3 dollars more to get the sale. It will definitely affect our overall profit.

One thing about this that blows my mind is that Mercari needs and wants more eyeballs on their app. There is no way that isn't their number 1 priority. Why does eBay crush them? Because eBay has a significantly larger user base. Yet, this strategy seems like it would do the opposite. I bet Mercari is extinct within 2-3 years if they stick with this strategy.

Notice how Mercari has other companies advertisements placed around their platform….those companies are paying Mercari for that. They make more money that way then charging sellers fees.

As for the return information that is not obvious: perhaps an experiment for each question? Ask a few neighbors to help out. Let them buy some $1 items (with your money, of course). Ship them then run some experiments on various return process questions.

Hi "Gang" - I have been a long time viewer and learned much from you guys - especially related to navigating all the functions of eBay and Packing (you've been a big help, Lonnie). I am a Seller for several years, not a Reseller, trying to move over 56 years of marriage "stuff"!!! Regarding this video and the new feature of Mercari where one can "Import" listings from eBay:1) does the listing still exist on eBay and, 2) if the listing remains on both accounts and then sells on Mercari, is the listing automatically removed from eBay or will Candice still have to remove the listing manually on items y'all have cross-listed? Yeah I have a problem with a return customer bought the item it was a jack hammer they had it and used it after three weeks they wanna return item and I have no returns on this item and the customer is also a seller on eBay. He said he used it for a day then it broke. Well the picture he sent show the part was taken off so it looks broke. Basically I be feel like he wanted to use a machine for free and return so he would not have to pay for anything for using the jack hammer. It was sold for 1000.00 case in review eBay needs to decide in my favor just from what the guy said he used it for a day then it broke. Problem is he finished the job and trying to get it for free

They are trying to make a market where people resell there own stuff and use that money on the platform to buy something without pulling the money out. Between them trying to keep a hold of the sellers money longer and the sellers money longer I wonder if they are planning on making a ton of money off of the huge lump some of money they will be holding onto rather than buyers and sellers pulling there money out of the platform

Actually, auction houses that are LIVE, make the buyers PAY for all the fees, it's never the sellers. Having it done this way will ONLY attract real interested buyers vs anyone that might want to pull a switch a roo situation. On top of that, they only have 3 days to return the item, no questions asked? Yeah, I will that take over the nonsense that eBay puts on the sellers with a 30 day turn window. Worst time to sell Halloween costumes during Halloween, because it's always a given that once Halloween is done, there's a return for "it doesn't fit"... smh. I am glad mercari is stepping up and putting pressure on ebay. I, for sure, will be listing A LOT more on Mercari from now on.

18:37 1000% agree it should be NOW standard Norm 3 day return window escpaolly on used item its either broken when you get it or you test it out and doesn't work okay 3 days id rather have some alret me with in 3 days then on day 29 or day 59 or with amazon on day 179 heck i have had amazon approve a return 2 years later! sorry on used items 3 days or YOU the buyer are the NEW Owner for that item for life! i have been saying this for a VERY LONG Time like the last 2 decades we are NOT rental companies we are business and i really feel if eBay and amazon want these INSANE return policies then they can front the return COASTS out of the billions of dollars they make every year if they really think returns are not that bad then let them start fronting the costs on 30 day returns or 60 day returns or 90 day returns or on amazon 180 day returns during Nov Dec and Jan yep a buyer can buy something in Nov and return it in Jan!!
