Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, questioned Judge Amy Coney Barrett on Oct. 14, the third day of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing. Lee asked about Barrett’s decision-making on cases involving questions of religious freedom as well as abortion rights, including a ruling in which she dissented from her court’s decision to strike down an Indiana law requiring the burial or cremation of fetal remains. The Supreme Court later upheld the law. Lee noted that Barrett also upheld Chicago’s “buffer zone” ordinance protecting abortion clinics from protesters, suggesting it showed her personal anti-abortion beliefs would not interfere with her role as a justice. The hearing came about three weeks before Election Day. The third of four days of scheduled testimony gave senators another opportunity to ask Barrett about her record and approach to the law.
