I had a double knee replacement at the same time. When I was in rehab at the hospital there was a group of student nurses that came every day. The day I was to get my staples out I was nervous but then came each of the students and their supervisor let each one take one out. I was sidetracked by how worried they are. It doesn't hurt except sometimes when the end comes out it burns a little. The person removing on the video was too rough. My nurses were so kind and gentle.

@OceanSwimmer
@OceanSwimmer 2 года назад
Empty Pockets Carl: The decision about closure material is up to the Surgeon and depends upon the type of surgery and your ability to heal. Open Heart surgery closure (for example) is done with Stainless Steel wire, and is permanent. They are not removed & the scar heals over them. The sharp ends are turned under by hand with pliers so they aren't poking you. Every situation is different (with some exceptions, of course) because no two patients are alike.

I have had staples in my scalp, and staples for both knee replacements. They hurt coming out a GREAT DEAL! Enough to make me weep. Blanket reassurances should not be made, and if a patient says this hurt last time, I would like a topical anesthetic of some sort, listen.

I had staples in my first knee replacement. Didn't hurt at all. A couple were a bit more difficult to extract but not painfully so. Tho I did have one staple that was very buried & I had to call back my nurse to remove that one a few days later but no pain. Remember to count how many there are!! I have asked medical staff why the amount of staples used is not included as part of the discharge letter? At least then the person removing them knows exactly how many there should be for removal & doesn't accidentally miss any if they happen to become buried. My second knee replacement had sutures & then glued. I think I prefer staples. The glued wound seems to be more 'proud' above the incision than the wound that was stapled. Excellent video as usual xx

Just got mine out today. 9 from my lower back, were in for two weeks. The skin started to heal around them a little and it is a more sensitive area but some hurt more than others. The bottom three felt like a mild bee sting, two or three i really didnt notice and then a couple felt like plucking a hair. Overall not the most pleasant but i am settling down to sleep WITHOUT laying on top of pokey metal things in my back for which i am very grateful. Brief minimal pain for a big gain.

Staple and drain removal doesn't hurt at all. Longitudinal sterile -strips were used on my knee for ACL reconstruction AFTER the staples were removed. It helped my scar lie flat while healing. After a few weeks, my Physical Therapist showed me how to massage my scar so it would become pliable and soft. Now, you can hardly see it. Same story with my abdominal scar, which was about 15 inches long.

OK so I just had my staples removed a couple of days ago. Here’s how it went. I applied Emla about an hour before, then took my ”as needed” meds a half hour before. The young girl (not a nurse so - an assistant of some kind?) in my GP’s office said she was an expert at removing staples; she’d done it several times. She didn’t know which side of the tool was up and which was down and first attempted to pull three separate staples out. Each time I cried out and said “you’re not doing this!” Finally she stopped, looked closely at the tip of the instrument, and turned it over. NOW it worked properly. They all popped out with minimal, if any, discomfort. At least, 35 of them did. The last one she tried for a while but blood was pooling in that part of the incision, so she fetched an experienced nurse, who managed to wrangle it out. Somehow it was almost completely embedded in my skin, in the shape of a square, with only one corner protruding. I pinched my skin near the staple so I didn’t feel as much pain as it was withdrawn. Lesson? Don’t believe someone knows how to use the staple remover just because they tell you they do! I wish I had a close-up of the remover tip so I could show you what I mean.

I’ll get about 60 of them removed from 4 incisions from my ankle surgery soon. Six weeks wrapped up in a cast with only cast exchanges to see how the incisions look makes me a bit concerned/fearful as the skin around the ankle is so tender (esp since being in a cast)! The best thing about that day is I can scratch that itch without a cast, and taking a shower without the Poly-Seal bag!

@@TalkingWithDocs Subscribed & Liked! Could you do a video about how to appropriately reduce your post-op pain meds to reduce withdrawal symptoms? (I stopped my post-op meds this past week, and by Friday I started to have severe withdrawals after using opioids for 4 weeks. This cavus foot rebuild was the worst! Funny, but while some docs give you sufficient pain meds to get through post-op and PT, but how many docs tell you how to step-down or taper your meds to reduce these withdrawal symptoms. (I think I’ve hit 80% of Google’s Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) withdrawal symptoms). I know you’ll help so many people with this excruciating experience. So not fun! Thank you!!

After an accident, I had surgery for a ruptured spleen (vertical mid-line laparotomy) and was closed up with a row of staples. After a couple of weeks in the hospital, the spleen repair failed and I went back into surgery. A doctor or resident or somebody started pulling out the staples while I was still awake and it hurt like hell. It hurt so bad I could barely speak to tell them how bad it hurt. Another couple of weeks when discharge time was drawing near, it was time to get that set of staples out. An RN or PA working quietly, carefully released each staple before pulling it out and it was fine, no pain or discomfort. It all depends on how it is being done.

Yes, removing staples does hurt. Having them removed from a sensitive area hurts worse. The first time I had staples removed was by a student nurse. She seemed to think she was supposed to place the remover on the staple then pull up instead of clamping down on the remover. Multiply that by 35 staples and see how it feels. Second time for removing staples after having been in for 16 days, was done by a seasoned nurse. I thought this should go much better. Unfortunately, the nurse was unable to do her job and talk at the same time, trying to answer all of my sister’s (who was my care giver) questions. Here I was spread eagle while they were gabbing to which I said “Can we get on with this?” The removal was not as bad as the first, but still painful. I had too many staples to count (my neck would not crane to the entire area of where the staples were), but it was more than 35. Hopefully, I will never have staples again.

I hate, hate HATE staples. I had them once and I had red inflamed skin and taking them out was horrible. I was told I’d need a c-section my first baby, (I didn’t in the end) and I said there was no way I’d agree to that if I’d have staples. Maybe they are good for some people, but they were horrible for me. Oddly enough I can’t wear earrings, surgical stainless steel, gold, silver and certainly not cheap earrings.

It can’t help but hurt. Nerve endings are real. Maybe it won’t hurt as much as you think it will hurt…but there is a pain factor. I thought the removal of the staples on the woman’s leg could have been smoother. Note the patient had to put their hands under them.

Got 30 staples removed from my ankle and leg area after ankle surgery. Being lean or having excess fat make a big difference in terms of what you feel when getting the staples removed. I’m very lean and healthy and getting the staples removed was NOT painless. A solid 3/10 on the pain scale; not just a “slight tug”, but some sharp pains at times, even though they were expertly removed. I would recommend taking a painkiller prior. I didn’t, and I regret it.

Four years ago I had a hip replacement, they used a surgical glue and staples. Turns out I was allergic to the surgical glue, which inflamed and caused welts around the surgical area. It was all I could do not to scratch the staples out myself!!! It kinda felt good to have the staples removed, even though a lot of the itching was gone by then. I'm scheduled for the my other hip January 2022. With all the pain you've probably been in for so long, the staples are NOTHING!! Wish I wouldn't have put off the first one for so many years. I'd literally drive to my appointments an hour early so I'd have time to walk from the car to the clinic, and not have to use the walker or park in handicapped parking (even though I'd have tears in my eyes by the time I got to where I was going!). Good grief!!

I had staple after getting a temporary hip after getting sepsis from my initial hip. Some were ok, but some were so painful that they had to stop and let my body recover for a few minutes. Thankfully he assured me I would not get staples when I got my regular replacement hip put in. I was terrified of that.

Nicely explained. However, if it does hurt a bit (or more than a bit), which apparently is the case, why not apply some substance to deaden the pain? I'm asking because I had hernia surgery a week ago.

I had steri-strip closures with my first knee replacement, no problems at all. Unfortunately, I had staple closures with the second knee replacement. It hurt the whole time they were in. When the bandage was removed in order to remove the staples, my incision site was infected, and so, it was painful when they were removed. The pain was also gone, once they were out. Staples were not a good experience for me.

Hey there, first off you cats should have a TV show!! I find myself watching your videos for the entertainment as well as the informative aspect. I’m almost hoping to have a hip replacement so I stay tuned!! I myself will be having total knee replacement surgery in one month. I understand that pre-hab and re-hab are key. I’ve been doing exercises to prepare. My question is can you recommend a cooling unit? I’m the toughest guy I know, but I’m becoming a little anxious. I appreciate your channel. Thanks for your time!!

Yeah my doc barely got 5 staples out in the length of your entire video, and it hurt quite a lot. Mine was for a discectomy so they were ordered to be in for 2week. Also getting concerned it’s now infected, as it’s very hot to the touch over 24hours later. Also mine bled quite a bit, like through the dressing by the time I got home. So we cleaned it and redressed it.

I had emergency surgery and now these staples are overdue to come out. I have to wait until Monday to schedule again. My intestines were blocked and they had to do emergency surgery so I have staples all up my abdomen. Nervous to get them out because I've never had actual staples before. My oncology nurse says to take an anxiety pill before they take them out which tells me it'll be a little hectic.
