I’m 3 weeks post operation, in such pain, I live on my own and am finding it very difficult and lonely and frightening coping on my own, especially in the middle of the night, thank you for giving me hope.
It’s been almost three weeks for me too,I’m laying here crying, just wanting to feel better again, sending you prayers, icing helps tremendously, but it’s so hard to get comfortable enough to sleep…I’m finding it calming watching videos like this, giving me hope that “this too will pass”God bless, I hope you feel better soon
I’m 3 weeks post op too! It’s been a nightmare, as I have been so poorly with the anaesthetic, and I also have MS. Looking for words of encouragement. Ps. And I used to be a physio!!😂
I’ve had both knees replaced 10 years ago for the first one, 5 years ago for the second one. I’m 86 now and can honestly say that I’ve had no problems. They were done at Wythenshaw hospital Manchester. They were absolutely marvellous and I can’t recommend them enough. Perhaps I should also add, I had a triple bypass there also. Maybe I could get a season ticket for parking.
now days allot better I had kerland Jobe doctors did mine in1970 they treat people better ,first had Whittier ca quack doctors messed my knee up and x-ray I had to ask for lead shield but I was crippled because I was beyond any in sports I threw basketballs full court broke records at school teacher made me do things over, was so fast ,baseball nobody could strike me out, so I was crippled in high school twice. doctor in Whittier made my knee worse, now they do things, god made things happen to them later.
Am 73 now , had both knees done same week eight yrs ago , Had Quad bypass 20 years ago . Retired now as soon as I get my diabetes under control will concur the world . Guess I am a good healer with good doctors .
I had both my knees replaced at 57 (8 months apart). It’s been life changing. I’m back to long distance swimming, walking and modern jive dancing. Not a single moment of regret. I’ve got my life back.

The thing is too . Judy Dench is a multi millionaire who can afford the best of everything and really has no idea how hard most of us alone find post surgery.
You have a good point... My experience is so bad that I can't even begin to explain 😢😢😢. By YAH's Grace and mercy I'm praying for the relief to come my way. It's been (2 &1/2 years)
That's the thing, isn't it? I live alone in the country with all the home indoor/outdoor responsibilities, and in the case of knee replacement, no one to help and no money to pay anyone during the recovery period.
I am genuinely grateful to Dame Judy Dench & Jonathan Monk for making this video. I am 76, told arthritis in my left knee is "very, very, very bad. You have effectively explained why to wait no further. Spent almost a year trying a stem cell procedure that did not help enough. Now regret not having done surgery instead then. God willing I shall return to Dame Judy Dench's testimony after my surgery saying rhetorically: "If she can go up a flight of circular stairs almost right after her surgery you can do THIS." (Parenthetically I am enamored with the LOVELY autumn colors/tones of the room shown. Sorry if name comes up 2x. Some sort of computer glitch we don't know how to fix. True thanks for this. Warm Greetings from Tennessee--
When you have an arthritic knee, everyday it will get a little worse. When you have had it replaced, everyday it will get a little better. However, post surgery is extremely painful and you think you have made a massive mistake. The pain eventually disappears until you realise it was the best thing you ever did.
Yes, that’s where I am now: what a horrible mistake I’ve made. Today seems like it will be a depressed day and that was my first thought when I jolted awake at 4:00 am. And when this attitude comes along I fight it even harder. But for now, I only wish I could turn back the clock. I’d do ANYTHING else. Not TKR.
I am 6 days post surgery and woke this morning regretting my decision. Seeing this comment has helped me refocus and look to the next few months rather than days
@@sarahneate7548 I'm a 68 year old woman and had a partial knee replacement and now im 9 weeks Post surgery. I had the same same negative attitude at week 1. Only now im beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. At PT yesterday I got up to 110 flexion. The goal is 120. I cried almost every day since the surgery. Worst thing ever. Some advice-- watch your extension keep that leg straight. do your excersises. If you don't you'll end up with a limp. Go on youtube for new ideas on recovery and physical therapy for a total knee replacements. Ice and elevate after excersises. Take your medication one hour before PT. Don't rush to do physical work. You'll just get swollen again. This is a slow process i still have pain -but much less-and its still hard to sleep because I can't turn over yet. I just got back from a two week trip to Hawaii with my grandson which I couldn't cancel. I still managed to have a good time. The doctor told me I would be all set at six weeks but that wasn't really true. Only now at nine weeks people are noticing how good I am walking in I am feeling much better - 75% better than where you are now. It really does get better and you will be happy in the end
Once again, Dame Judi Dench shows us how truly wonderful she is! For an actor of her stature to be willing to do this for the rest of us to benefit from is just very special indeed!
@@irenedavo3768 I do not know. I live in the US and we have zero national health service. Which are you advocating for? Do people in the UK prefer for those who can afford it to not use free government resources or is it that you would prefer for all to be equal and therefore equal access and quality of care? I could understand both positions. I really just wish we had a NHS.
She is great for her age ..but I don't have pain it's soreness so I wount gave a knee replacement ..but I walk my dog each day or get a shopping trolley when I go shopping but as I told my doctor you can't fix old age ..some people get over it quicker but I don't think I could but I'm keeping my old knees thank you Judi Dench your great lady xxx
Had total knee replaced 14 years ago. I’m now 73. Was torture to go thru but would gladly do again. I had torn ligaments and muscles that had to be repaired. I have no pain and do anything I want. I can outwalk my children. I was bone to bone and wish I had done earlier. I waited till I could barely walk. Missed so much. Good attitude and a lot work pays off.
@@mpat100 it doesn’t feel any different than a normal knee. The only thing different that I only notice when I go to an exercise class is that the knees don’t bend quite as far as a natural knee. For example if you are on your knees, you can’t sit back on your heels. Or if you are standing and you bend your leg so that your foot is behind you, you can’t reach back and grab your ankle. But for everyday living, they feel completely natural. I’m very happy because now I can go hiking again and walk long distances.
Yes, I had torn cruciate ligament and bone on bone, my knees slipped even when just standing. It was hard stuff but well worth having both knees replaced one year apart. I can sit cross legged as before, fantastic results.
Prescription meds interacted, so pain management failed and it was 2 months of misery, before the pain was all I thought about. At the time I thought never again. But a year later, there's a slight possibility. Hopefully the other knee stays adequate. Function, however was a great success.
I had a terrible experience with bilateral total knee replacement. It was 3 years ago, and I still have trouble walking.I asked my surgeon if it would get any better. He said, "No. That's as good as it gets." Unfortunately, he used stainless steel knee replacements which are heavy and cumbersome instead of Titanium because that's what Medicare will pay for. I would never recommend him to anyone for any type of orthopedic surgery. I also contracted an infection in the hospital that they didn't pick up until I was in the rehab facility and was running a high fever. Total incompetence on the part of the hospital staff.
I had a left hip replaced at age 80. Handled all by myself with zero help from family. I live in second floor condo with 24 steps. Only in hospital one day and up immediately after surgery. Did laundry on 3rd day. Had 10 days of therapy. Best decision as I could no longer play golf. I am now 82, going to gym classes 3x week and play 9 holes of golf once a week. If you needed, don’t be afraid. Go for it.
I had a TKR at 74. The first few weeks were very painful - nights were the most difficult time. But persistent exercises and walking paid off. It was only a few weeks before I was able to walk over two miles. I found that the flexibility in the knee continued to improve over an 18 month period. It is now 3.5 years and I am delighted with the knee which had been extremely painful before the operation.
Had knee surgery two years ago, had planned a two week trip to Europe 7 weeks after surgery. Having that goal made me work very hard, and thanks to great physical therapists, I was able to enjoy climbing hills on Lake Como. And sightseeing through the Alsatian vineyards. A goal is so important!
My poor husband had the “bone on bone” issue for quite awhile and it was HORRIBLE to see him in so much pain. And he put on quite a bit of weight because he couldn’t move and exercise like he usually always had. So he was in this vicious cycle of …. When the Ortho Docs would say…”Well lose 40lbs and we’ll do the surgery “ Well that was pretty much a HUGE FRUSTRATION b/c he couldn’t exercise, thus he couldn’t lose the lbs. But THANK GOD ALMIGHTY our prayers were answered when we found a Brilliant Doctor that would actually fashioned a joint to fit the knee, rather than just use “stock replacement joints”. It changed our lives. He did so well that he had the other side done and he now out of knee pain. So “PLEASE, PLEASE keep on searching for your perfect Doctor. Because not just any old one will due. And BTW, Love Dame Judy so much. 💞
Thank you for this comment. I'm happy that your husband is doing so well. I too had one doctor say I had to lose 40 lbs. before he would do the surgery. (I was 80 lbs. overweight at the time). I found another surgeon who had done many, many knee replacements and he said there was no problem doing the surgery for someone my size. He didn't use a special knee joint because I have small knees. Everything worked out fine and I was able to be more active and actually lost 40 lbs. I just had my 2nd knee done three weeks ago. One thing I noticed is that recovery time takes much longer because of the weight - I don't remember how long it took for that first knee but it was much longer than other people. But I should be able to be even more active and lose even more weight this time. I'm 63.

I just want to thank you for throwing me a lifeline. Nothing to do with knee replacements but dementia. I lost my husband to dementia in 2012. I spiraled into a world of drugs to dull the pain. Am now trying to work my way through withdrawals after 10 years. Very, very painful. Watching all of your performances has helped me tremendously. Thank you so very much. I know you will probably never read this but sure helped to write.
Ah, Kathleen same thing happened to me with my dear wife. It strains your beliefs, but you get over it, and you just get on with life and the wonderful things that there is. RU-vid and the internet are a life saver. I average some 6 hours a day. Course living in the UK, with its marvellous NHS done help things too. Hope this helps you Kathleen, and keep on living. Take care.
Dame Judi mightn’t read this, but others have, and will. Bravo for taking the steps to help yourself - which is EXACTLY what rehab after knee replacements surgery is. The parallels of pain and recovery are right there. You can do this. ❤️🌹
Bravery needs to be acknowledged by everyone. I am not Judy Jench, but simply a human who has tasted the same sour fruit of anxiety and depression. I am getting through it day by day, and you will be alright also. Good luck.
Hi, I am Angela from eastern North Carolina but live in Colorado now. I am 56 years old with OA of the left knee, stage 4. The right one isn't as bad. I have shared the video and doing more research on this. I have also been trying to loose weight, but with COPD and edema, it is hard, But I am Not giving up. God wouldn't either. So, I am thankful that I have found this video as well. Love Judi and her acting...Amazing and Beautiful she is. Thank you for sharing this with us. Hope you all have a Wonderful day, and stay Positive as well. ❤️🤗❤️

Had my knee done 15 years ago - very painful first 3 days - from then on better and better, riding my horse 8 weeks later ! Now 75 and everything still perfect ! Wonderful operation - don’t wait !
I may have commented on this before but it certainly is worth reiterating: this video was instrumental in my getting knee replacement surgery after an accident. Thank you Dr. Monk. Thank you Dame Judy. I was absolutely paralyzed with fear until I watched this.
i had both of my knees done together in 2018 when i was 70 .... with very good results...could walk already when i was in rehab... stairs no problems...had a very good surgeon and i am very thankfull.
I’m having to recover after knee replacement surgery without any pain medication because my stomach cannot handle it. I’m using lots of ice and hope I can sleep better in one more week. This is my second knee surgery, and I know it will be worth it-no pain no gain. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and your optimism. 🥰
I love the insider trick of stopping 5 minutes before arriving at some function to stretch & lubricate joints so you dont limp at function. These interviews were so helpful. Thank you Dr. & Judy.
@Fiona Haddon, I hope you're rehabilitating and following doctor's orders. My insurance plan allowed for in home physical therapy which extremely helpful and made my recovery fast and complete. It's been 2-1/2 years and it's the best thing I could have had done. I wish you the best!
@@kimperes5987 my Uncle did Not doe the exercise and his surgery was a "fail".. But, we later found out he had mental health issues and it hurt his recovery work.
@@gemini_minor It’s going well and you need lots of patience. Need to ice ice ice and do all the exercises you are told to do. The more you get up and move the better even if it’s painful. They say it can take months for your knee to heal and there’s no point rushing that process.
I had TKR on my right knee three months ago, & although it was very painful for the first couple of weeks, I am thoroughly pleased with the outcome & my progress thus far. The physical therapy is extremely important for a full & speedy recovery, just as Dame Judi says! I still have a few weeks of physical therapy left, and then I will be progressing towards having my left knee replaced, also. The horrible pain from “bone on bone” arthritis is so much worse than the post-surgery healing pain. You can endure the post-surgery pain better, perhaps because you KNOW it is getting better daily! I am 75 now, soon will have another birthday, and I can honestly say that I wish I would have had TKR done long ago, as I have been suffering far too long! So if you are in doubt about it, believe me, you won’t be sorry in making the choice to be pain free.😊
Great advice although I am just 55 I have had past injuries on my right knee which has left me with bone on bone shattered cartilage and twisted and knotted tendons. I am very active and a keen cyclist I can no longer walk far the pain is excruciating if I do too much was offered the cortisone injection lasted only 2-3 weeks and back to square one Doc advice was keep taking the injection for a year. But I have decided to go for the knee replacement now having watched the video and read all the great advice the after pain will be temporarily the bone on bone will only get worse. My left leg is fantastic thank god but I have developed a limp and go down the stairs backwards sometimes I cannot bend my leg it's so bad. Thankfully I don't have sleep disturbances as pain doesn't come with sleep but nothing will stop me now from going for the surgery life is too short for suffering
Had my left knee done 5 weeks ago. Maybe I was lucky but I never used a walker, only a cane. I ditched the cane after a few weeks. I go for physio twice a week. I drove after 4 days. I've always been active so physio was not painful and I was far ahead of the goal that was set for me. Good luck to all those going through this.
What problems did you have because I’m 8 weeks out and my knee is still bent, I can’t straighten it out or bent it anymore then it is. I’m going to have to have a MUA
I wish I had seen this months ago. Had one knee replaced in June. It is doing very well. Now the other knee is going. Thank you Dame Judi and all who produced this.
Dame Judi Dence is a wonderful lady. I’m going to meet my surgeon in 2 weeks and she has given me so much encouragement and has made me feel more confident. Thank you such a wonderful honest video.
Doing the cortisone injections now and considering a knee replacement this fall, you have reassured me it is a difficult decision to make but thanks to all who share their stories
Just recently gone through total knee replacement 3 weeks ago . The result is unbelievable and is getting stronger by the day and would recommend to anyone thinking about it to get it done to get your day to day life back on track pain free
Seven weeks have flown by and knee getteing better by the day .surgeon was happy and told I can go back to work but don't over do it . Being in building knee will let me know. Am able to walk over two miles a day and continue with exercises
I'm only 51 and had to have a total knee replacement due to surgical errors during an ACL reconstruction, which left me with stage 4 osteoarthritis. I also have psoriatic arthritis, which is autoimmune inflammation. I'm a week post-surgery after waiting 8 years until I was over 50. I am amazed at how quickly I was up and walking again.
I have had two total knee replacements over 4 years. Fabulous surgeon. One night in hospital, no going to rehab or rehab pools Just a home visit from a Physio for a few weeks twice a week. Amazing surgeon. No problems since. All great.
Thank you ... my pain was disabling I was so grateful for the surgery .... compared to the pain before surgery the recovety was a godsend ...the hard part will be losing the weight i gained in 2 years trying to find s dr that would do it before i was 60 years old i am grateful every day
My mum is due for this operation and I know she’s worried about it,I’m going to show her this video, hopefully it will calm some of her fears.. so thanks 💋
I had my first done last year when I was 54 and have just had my 2nd done 2 weeks ago. I'm walking around and going up and down stairs without crutches and managed to walk round Tesco last night pushing a trolley for 45 mind, my 15 year old son did packing, lifting bags etc. Tell her not to worry the first 10 days are the worst, it's just a matter of taking painkillers constantly and ice, but the pain is, an ache not anything excruciating. Plenty of ice on knee does work also. Good luck
What a joy Dame Judy is. I’ve always known it. So many years of pleasure she’s given us. You see what determination she has eh. God Bless you mum. PEACE
I had two total knee replacements when I was 42, totally wonderful for 25 years, then they started to deteriorate, I was in pain again, I then had two more replacements! Thoroughly recommended, go for it, I got my life back again... what is essential is getting the right exercise and physiotherapy afterwards.
Thank you Dame Judi Dench. I watched your video the day before my left knee replacement surgery and I was extremely anxious. This video calmed me down.
I had my right knee replaced a few years ago after tolerating pain for several years. When I could barely walk, or do stairs I knew I had to have my knee replaced. I will never regret the surgery. I function as though it is my natural knee. My doctor said that I was very flexible and did not require frequent exams. Maybe it was because of the 18 years I danced ballet in my younger years.
I admire this lady and her wonderful personality, she encouraged me now to do this process that I was reluctant to do. Great advice before and after the operation. Greetings from Saudi Arabia
Hi I had both both knees done and it’s the best thing I ever did. I do not have any knee pain at all. Thank you to my specialist and my physio. I am from South Africa and wish I had done it sooner. I was in my sixties when I had it done.all the best to everyone.
I had a total right knee replacement in 2013. It takes time to get back to halfway normal knee movement within 9 months of therapy. You have to want to bend your new knee. It hurts and it will hurt for nearly a year. Be patient. The movement will come, keep working and the therapy will pay off. I went through 7 years of bone on bone pain, no sleep and tons of Ibuprophen. It's the best choice I have made. No pain and my new knee is awesome!
What is it that causes pain in that 9 months of recovery? Thanks for your information. I need both knees done and am wondering about what to look forward to!
Chris Warren 7th years in pain and ibuprofen I wS 4. Year take aleve I get ulcers and massage my knees and my doctor says forget about in others words live with it. I went to other doctor I found something wrong, I can explained but in two weeks I going to speak with doctor and he will explains what is wrong and going to get the minor surgery, the problem is to do with replacement only a small arrangement. The doctor who do the replacement he told that I do not need physical therapy. Only weeks weeks and here the doctor claims sometime needs one year. At this moment I need in near future a knee replacement in the other left knee. you 7years then when is 10 years you has to another replacement, made yourself a favor does waste your time suffering and destroys you stomach with ulcers.😡😱
Phil Hewitt welcome to my world 🌎 you sounds like you won the lottery. Go immediately to physical therapy and continue at home. So pain go to your doctor he or she has to gave the prescription if the doctor claims that the replacement is good better go to other doctor, do not wait years in pain.😰😡😱
When the doctor told my Mom she needed a knee replacement she was 82 years old. He told her the recovery was a year She said " A year ! At this age I don't even know if I am going to live another year. I am not spending it in rehab". My Mom died a year and a half later. I guess she knew something. It looks like Dame Judi will live much longer life. I hope she does. Godspeed sweet one.
I've had knee replacement on my left knee and hip replacement on my left hip. I felt wonderful after both replacements . I was painless for the first time in 30 yrs.
What I wish I knew before my knee op? That this video existed. After over 3 months of hell I took this advice and the improvement has been phenomenal. In just a few days too. My surgeon gave me similar advice but this video explains why. I used to stop doing whatever I was doing if the pain worsened, which was wrong. After watching this video I refused to hobble or limp, I walked up and down stairs despite it hurting. I exercised through the pain and within 2 - 3 days have resumed a normal life. The pain has lessened so much that it's hardly worth mentioning. It is thanks to you both that I have my life back and I am eternally grateful.
I've had to deal with pain for so long and I just saw knee surgery as another and possibly irreversible reason for more pain, my knee pain is only a part of my pain, but a big part. I've had to work in pain, try to sleep in pain, go to college in pain, it took me 10 years in between working, 10 years of trying to complete one solid year of college, but the worst pain was when I couldn't play with my beloved grandchildren and when my first granddaughter at the age of 5 wanted to play because I had told her the night before we were going to do something special the next day and I had to tell her the next day that I didn't feel good enough that morning to play and finally she told me "you don't ever feel good", and now she has my great grands and I'm still battling pain, you gave me hope, you helped me to want to fight again, I'm going to get back my courage and I know I stand amongst many who you have helped by sharing your experience with those of us who needed to hear your story and the message it held. THANK YOU!
I had a full knee replacement 9 years ago, great success, but after all those years l find if I have a day out shopping l find my leg heavy and tired but no pain
I absolutely agree and having a positive attitude and doing your exercises really makes a huge difference. I love my titanium knees! Good job sharing this to help others Mam, thank you.
I have had both of my knees replaced and I agree with her entirely. It is a sensual you must do the exercises afterwards. My newest knee is almost 5 months old and I am now doing everything I used to do years before. I’m walking up and down stairs and I’m able to walk with no limp or even a cane which I used for the last 15-20 years. I am very happy with my total knee replacements and would gladly do it again. The recovery was not nearly as horrible as I thought but I did push myself and that’s why I’m doing so well. And also an excellent surgeon had something to do with it too, lol.
I had unilateral partial knee replacements at 40 due to austio arthritis and think they are brilliant. I’m now 54 and have had my left converted to a full replacement and don’t regret having them done the pain before was excruciating
You are truly an incredible inspiration! I adore your bubbly spirit! I live in America so I'm not familiar with your career, however, I'm able to find parts of your career on the internet. God bless you! I'm truly a new of yours!
I am now 2 weeks post surgery, I am encouraged to Listen to Dame Judy Dench, Also her surgeon. Next week I shall be starting physio , i am suffering with pain management Yet now feel. Very encouraged to proceed with goals . My knee was dragging me down to the extend I could barely walk An I am even so grateful to have the blessings of surgery Mary Canada 🇨🇦
I’m almost six weeks post total knee replacement and still experiencing a lot of pain. Walking is fine, sitting is uncomfortable. Worst pain is at night. Unfortunately, the operation triggered sciatica in operated leg which still troubles me. Have worked really hard doing my exercises but knee can’t bend at 90 degrees. I really don’t think I could face having my other knee replaced. The pain 5 weeks post op is more painful than pre op.
what the, my golly gosh, I can't imagine doing the 2, but maybe it depends how diseased the joint is, I've suffered inflammation in t my knees for years and they wouldn't operate, understandably due to my age, I'm 57 just going into my 3rd week after, still got pain and using one crutch a lot of the time.
I've had both knees replaced, 4 years apart. Very painful before but both operations successful. One thing to remember don't think that after the op thats it, do the physio exercises, it makes all the difference in the long term
I am calling the doctor right now! I have tried cortisone shots, but it only helps for about a month. I have bone on bone contact on my knee, and I will now make the commitment to get surgery. It wont get any better without surgery.
Six years after Ms. Dench's video, I'm coming up to my first TKR in April and I want to say their video will be one I replay in my preop weeks and during my recovery, for its informative, inspirational, and also humorous info. I will particularly keep in mind to have a goal as my target to keep moving! In my case, an extended family picnic in late June! Thanks to you both! Be well!
Yes to all this. Mine was termed ‘complex’ after the procedure, longer spike into femur, titanium and had to stabilise my knee joint as disfigured by it all luckily positive thinking has helped all through x
Great vidio, both Judy D and the surgeon are so encouraging. I like very much what the surgeon had to say about knee surgery not being worse than hip surgery it it's results, it just takes longer to get over the operations and a bit more physio.
I had knee replacement in 2011 and 2012. Best thing I ever had done. I was in bad shape for 12 years. Tell told me I was too young. At 69 I had first one done the therapy was rough but well worth the pain. Today I can walk up to 2miles bend it dance etc. Gave me new life.
Suffered wth both knees because working for two airlines standing all the time caused me to secure the proper care. Great surgeon 2019 left knee with 18 staples then right knee 2020 but 48 staples. Yes I am very happy I did it, no more pain but very cognizant of my capabilities walking, sitting etc. whatever you put your mind to you can do, now 78 and I adore Dame Judith Dench especially in As Time Goes By great cast. 🙏👠👍❤️🥰
I’ve been waiting for 3 years to have both knees replaced. I’m now having to use a wheelchair, I can barely walk. I’m in constant bone in bone pain and have developed clots due to my sedentary lifestyle. NHS is broken and I can’t afford 14k for each knee. I’m 62, I want my life back.
You must do "NHS CHOOSE & BOOK" which means that you can have your knee replacements or any referral at a Private Hospital and you don't have to pay. Look up the Private Hospitals and choose your Consultant ans make sure that they do "NHS CHOOSE & BOOK" then tell your G. P this is the referral that you want.
Just had total knee replacement on right side just 6 weeks ago. Still having allot of pain especially when I am trying to walk. Feels like something is rubbing on something. Need to strengthen my quads though. Judy is fabulous and so is her Dr. I want to be able to walk a 5K which I hope I can do. Just wish I didn’t feel the clunking. ☺️
Reminds me of Jack Van Impe he said he used to be able to sneak up on Rexella his wife for a little kiss but no longer his knee replacement also made a noise and she could hear him coming. He was a precious Preacher of the End Times biblically and with current events
Dame Judi is completely correct in saying not to leave the operation too long. I’ve been totally stupid and was due to have my first knee replacement 4 years ago but stupidly cancelled it due to being too frightened. Now 4 years later I’ve ended up housebound, unable to drive which has knocked my social life out and can hardly sleep due to awful awful pain not only in my knees but also one of my ankles! My left knee has affected my left hip and right knee has affected my right ankle. I’m only 65 but feel 105 at the moment and life has passed me by the past 18 months due to my disability which didn’t need to get so painful or make me so immobile. I’ve had my pre operation and am now just awaiting the phone call to go in, I’m still absolutely dreading the operation but I feel I have absolutely no choice in the matter now. I’m also dreading after the operation as I cannot walk now and I feel I’ve wasted an opportunity to get my legs stronger before the operation as it’s impossible to do any kind of physio now so will have to be all done after which will probably be much harder and take more time. Please anyone reading this take my advice for what its worth and do not leave having knee replacements until you can no longer walk like I did because it’s horrible being immobile like me due to stupidity and being frightened.
Dear Jo, so sorry to hear about your pain, but please try not to blame yourself for this very natural caution and the regret you feel now. It's 4.18 am as I read this, and I was moments away from deciding to cancel my TKR next month, dreading the op, the post-op and my longsuffering 80 year old husband having to help me through it! Your words give me the incentive to go ahead. My left knee got so much worse this year, and you remind me not to kid myself that it is going to get better, and just to go ahead with faith and positive energy. Hope you will see this reply and know you are NOT stupid. Don't be scared, do the physio afterwards and god bless.
Like Dame Judi, I’m also an optimist, and I’m looking forward to having 2 total knee replacements in the next 6 months. I’ve had a hip replacement and my advice to anyone having joint replacement surgery is - do your exercises! Work with the physio and do all your exercises because this is a vital step in recovery and regaining your independence. I’ve successfully recovered well from my hip, but soon I’m having my left knee done first to see how much the op will (or hopefully will NOT) impact the CRPS I have in both feet. If all’s well, they’ll do the right knee and, as far as I’m concerned, they might as well just do the right knee soon as I’m used to pain, so what’s more? Thanks for sharing this video, it’s good to see other older, encouraging people discuss their experiences. Good luck to you all 😊
After my hip replacement, I tell future "hippies" to stay on top of your pain with meds, do your exercises religiously both during your PT session and between sessions, and after exercising rest & ice & rest & ice &... Have your favorite movies lined up to watch.
Love this Beautiful Lady.. I had my right knee operated on in July. The one thing I noticed there was no pain just discomfort after. Mind you I was on a lot of pain killers. But I must say the most wonderful thing about having my knee done is NO more bone on bone. I can't thank my surgeon enough.. I must remember more exercises...
I had both my knees replaced 15 years ago. Total knee replacement was the best thing for me. I did the required post op exercises and have never looked back.
My thanks to the Doctor and to Dame Judi Dench for this great video. It was very helpful. Also for all the years of sharing your wonderful talent with us, I thank you. I’ve always been a fan. God bless you both. 🤗❤️🇨🇦
Thank you so much for your discussion on this subject. I have two bone on bone knees which I have been postponing surgery but you are correct it will not get better. I see my surgeon next week and I’ve decided to go ahead with one knee at a time.
I think this video is excellent and patients waiting for a replacement would benefit watching it. From the age of 10yrs old I played netball and carried on right up to being 36yrs old. 99.9 of those matches were played on tarmac even inside it was a hard wood floor. No sprung floors then. This didn’t help and being from a family with high numbers of suffering arthritis. At 36 I retired and had my first replacement then 3yrs later I had the other one replaced. In the 80’s full replacements meant a stay in hospital for usually 8-10 days. I’m now 38yrs older and only just starting to get a niggle in my first replacement. I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 2yrs ago and these hips are complaining, so for me and others I know having the replacements were very beneficial. 😊👍
Absolutely Adore Judi Dench. Great actress. I have had both hips done and the right knee so this is very encouraging about doing the exercises and getting on with your life. Never Give Up!
I have had both knees replaced and one had to be redone due to the poor work of the initial surgeon. However they are both great. Once you get over the original operation pain and then having the staples out you need to do your exercises given by the physiotherapist. I found the best one was to put your foot on a stair about 3 up from where you are standing and then lean into it, bending the knee as you go. I have never had lots of pain and am so glad they have been done. Better than ever.
My left knee last year they used staples. So painful to remove. Just had my right knee and they use glue and a special tape now. No more staples. So much better.
I’m 60 years old. I used to be jogger and very active but after 4 arthroscopic surgeries torn meniscus, tendon, ligaments, bones chips floating in the knee, constant swelling, bone on bone, bakers cysts that is preventing from bending the knee I’m going to have a knee replacement. My twin sister had hers done without any difficulties. My younger brother had both knees done! I’m more anxious to have it done and scared as well. I’m hoping that afterwards I can continue doing my activities as before!
