Theresa May has fought back tears as she announced she will resign on 7 June, following months of pressure.
Mrs May said she had her "best" to get her Withdrawal Agreement through parliament and to give people what they had voted for in the Brexit referendum of 2016.
Watched by husband Philip and her closest aides, she said: "It is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort.

As an American who has been watching Brexit unfold these past weeks, I have to admit that I have only admiration and respect for Theresa May. I have watched her go to Brussels several times to negotiate for Brexit and watched her speak in parliament to propose deals only to be turned down. I have not seen anyone work so hard with so much strength and dignity in the face of negativity. I hope that the British public will appreciate that they had a prime minister who looked after the interest of their country and its people.

She loves the country - but what about the people, democracy and majority rule? - She had a pompous front for being for the majority but behind that front everyone could see she was engaging in political witchcraft. This countries military has been sent into harms way to rid countries with a leader which was acting in what they thought was the national interest regardless of democracy, which our politicians called a dictator. Theresa May acted in what she thought was the national interest regardless of democracy and majority rule. She gave a window of opportunity for militaries in the middle east to attack this nation. Thankfully they didn't. Iraq went into a sovereign nation called Kuwait and took their oil. All the politicians and press called for a military invasion. Israel is in a sovereign nation called Syria and are taking the oil. No one is talking about this, as we're all talking day after day about this circus called brexit. Was Theresa May an agent for another country taking orders to engage in smoke 'n' mirrors? Hence the brexit pantomime.

A decent, principled woman forced into a completely impossible situation. She didn't have the political, rhetorical, speechmaking skills that would enable her to lie to the public in a convincing way, that's why the Tories want Boris to fill her shoes. She was too honest and too moderate for the hardcore lunatics in her party, but still too dogmatically tethered to the idea that Brexit has to happen for the hardcore remainers. As Home Secretary, May continued the mass 3rd world immigration into the U.K. that was started by Blair - during her tenure as Prime Minister the numbers increased; this despite the Tories being elected on the strength of Cameron's 2010 pledge to reduce net immigration numbers to below 100 thousand. We are now seeing the fruits of the Tories' and Labour's combined effort as the U.K. becomes more divided due to increased diversity, white Brits (i.e. the indigenous people of the U.K.) start becoming a minority on our cities (not least our capital city, London), and our treasured institutions of learning start to discriminate against those they deem in receipt of 'white privilege'.
