No, for the most part US railways are fine. Mainlines are kept up with. Passenger service is bad, everyone can agree on that, but US freight rail operations are some of the best in the world. The increase in looting seems to be a more recent Los Angeles thing than anything else.
Yeah railways are fine in Illinois from what I’ve seen. I’ve paid $4 for a 50-mile trip and $15 for a 150-mile trip, passenger cars were comfortable. Many of the more frequently travelled freight lines are reasonably well-maintained as well.

You’re talking theft. How many of these people are in low income brackets and can’t afford a disposable income that they’re literally robbing for resale or personal use? Edit: my point is the motives for theft fulfill some sort of need. Depending on what’s being stolen and how it’s being used informs us what’s going on. The number of people who impulsively steal is probably too small of a percentage of our population to cause this situation. These people have a motive and incentive to seek out a train and take stuff. It doesn’t make it right, but it doesn’t solve the problem either by just calling it criminal. People who normally abide by law will break it when they feel they need to. But short of these people self reporting we wouldn’t know what’s going on. My question is curious about motives all the same of what we see with any crime like this and the underlying issues. My bet is they need money or are taking a gamble to find something nice to improve their livelihoods that they can’t normally afford. Bet.

Point taken about a homeless person (again assumption) walking. At a minimum they were committing the crime of trespassing. All the other videos show the great lengths the railroads went to to make it clear to stay off and out of the property including razor wire on fences. No expectation. Of privacy at that location. No reason to edit the face. Maybe it will help law enforcement identify a potential suspect or witness.

If your package doesn't arrive then you don't pay anything to Amazon or whoever you bought the items from. And if you sent a package yourself then that package will have insurance. So the only one losing is the shipping company.

If the railway infrastructure were maintained, in the USA it is faster to take your car to go from one city to another than to take the train, everything is so dilapidated, that's one side that tourists don't see. the slower the train is ,more easier it is to stole on that same train, even if it's moving.

Who ships expensive equipment without insurance.... Was sent a over night by 10am package $4500 test equipment. Better believe it was insured..by 10:45 on phone needed it by 12 ..

the company isnt going to risk train crews over some packages. thats a insurance nightmare if a crew was injured trying to protect the train. but since its california law enforcement probably cant do much to help.

Sellers without insured goods are taking the hit and dealing with the hassle and a loss of custom . These trains aren’t being held up by gunmen. They are being jumped onto by petty thieves and desperate people. The trains are too slow and don’t have proper locks . They only have to fix either of those two things or police a small section of the line. Its not a law enforcement issue. Its someone aware of a problem and not fixing it because the losses are being borne by someone else. Meanwhile more crap is blown and leached into the ocean.

Yeah it’s not always done out of an immediate necessity, but someone living on the streets or someone having a minimum wage job that can barley even afford rent may feel they need to do more to get out of that situation. They probably didn’t go to collage so higher paying job is out of the question, what’s the other option? Crime is often seen as a way to help one out of an economic situation, or a way to get the next the best thing. Yes consumerism and aggressive advertising also encourages crime, but especially in those who can’t normally afford certain goods.
I just tracked my UPS package and it says "left at front door" like all UPS tracking says. That's why my last 3 packages were found on the side of my road 1 mile from my house by a cattle pasture gate. Three separate times!
