The thing with aspen bedding is the following: the everage humidity should be between 50 and 65% ( depending if on shed period it can be slightly higer or use a humid hide ) but because of the humidity level and the temprature ( basking spot 31°c and cool spot 22°c ) the aspen will start to mold. The very very best will always be natural like for example the brand " eco earth " or " exo terra : jungle earth ". AND throw in some springtails and isopods. Those insects clean up the poop and feed the soil too for if you go full vivarium. ( which i always recommend to do so for all the benefits of the animal )

I just received a beautiful male juvenile corn snake from South Mountain reptiles. I'm happy I watched this video. Instinctively I can tell I shouldn't bother him right now. He is really scared and hiding in his hide and not coming out even though it's been 3 days. I feel reassured that I am doing the right thing to let him chill out till he is less scared. My other corn snake is a baby and weirdly enough she isn't so scared as the juvenile male. I only had her a few days but I left her alone for 1 day and now she is super active and I can see her exploring her enclosure and hold her a little. I can't wait till a few days from now when the male isn't so scared.

Youre doing great! I agree with you, each corn snake is different! One of my male baby corn snakes is out and about pretty much 24/7. He doesnt even sleep in his hides anymore. Meanwhile i have a female baby corn snake the same age as he is and she will throw a fit if i try to hold her. Once you do take him out, get to know how he reacts in your hands. Work on taming him down and he will be an amazing snake! Good luck

@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
It depends/ do you mean half of the enclosure is aspen and another half is coconut fiber? Or do you mean a mix of both spread around the entire enclosure. If you mix & spread both around the enclosure id say it could work if you make sure to keep up with spot cleaning as coco fiber can hold humidity & moisture but since it will be mixed with the aspen it may cause mold issues overtime. As long as you keep the substrate as clean as possible i dont see why it wouldnt work. I think itll look really natural

Hey! I have few questions if you don't mind: 1. Is there like specific size of the cage you have to get for them? 2. Does it hurt if they bites you? 3. Does the cage have to have some lights?
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 2 года назад
There is a guideline of sorts to follow when picking out an enclosure for your corn snake. The minimum tank size for an adult corn snake is a 40 gal enclosure. The dimensions of a 40gal are 36L by 18W by 16H (inches). The bite does not hurt at all! If you do manage to get bitten it feels similar to a paper cut, maybe even less pain than that haha. And no, my enclosures do not have any special lights or LED lights for viewing purposes. You could definitely add some lights if you wish but make sure they are not super powerful because they will overheat the enclosure
@realityyy4047
@realityyy4047 2 года назад
Well, the size depends on the age/size of the snake. I find 48"x24"x24" is a good size for adults. The rule of thumb I go by is snake length x half of the snake lenth x half of the snake length for snakes that are not aboreal or have specific requirements. If you get a baby or sub-adult you should start small. If you don't want to purchase a new enclosure every time the snake grows a certain amount you can buy an adult enclosure and divide it with a fitting piece of wood for example. Putting a hatchling in too big of an enclosure can be detrimental to the animal. Not really....they have small teeth and they will only tag you and not hold onto you in most cases. Handle your snake carefully and regularly outside of feeding them, be confident and gentle and they won't bite you once they are a bit older and less scared of everything. It can happen, but even if it does.....it's not a big deal. I'd be more afraid of my cat scratching me than of a corn snake biting. If you are really really scared....you can go for snakes that are even less likely to hurt you, like egg-eating snakes. They have other cons, but being bitten is not really something to keep you from keeping snakes in general if you'd want to otherwise. You need the proper temperature at the correct distribution, which can be achieved with heat map setups etc. So lighting is not required for survival, but proper lighting and a day/night cycle is recommended. You should read up on how to properly set up the enclosure with thermostats etc. Unreliable or wrongly set up heat lamps/mats can hurt or kill the snake. But there is a lot of information on what to get and how to put it together.
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 года назад
A 4x2x2’ enclosure is the minimum when they’re full grown, 40 gallons is much too small for an adult. Young snakes can absolutely be put in a large enclosure as long as there’s enough clutter and plant coverage, and not too much open space. Heat mats are not a good heat source, definitely use overhead heating/lighting. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin. Linear UVB is beneficial as well.

Hey man, know this video is a year old but I’ll still leave this comment. I’ve been wanting a snake ever since my stepsister got a ball python when I was around 10. Corn snakes have always caught my eye because of their relatively easy care and I think they are BEAUTIFUL. I’m 21 now and finally pulling the trigger on a snake. I’ve got all of my gear ordered and the last thing is the snake itself. Any good recommendations for breeder websites that typically have a good selection of morphs available?
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 2 года назад
sadly where I live (& most of canada if im not mistaken) doesnt really have many online breeders that readily ship snakes around the country. The weather is just too drastic at times & shipping alone would be hundreds of dollars. Sorry im no help for specific websites, but just do quick google research on reputable breeders in your country. Read reviews from other customers, look at what morphs the breeder has to offer & once you see a snake that catches your eye then go for it. Best of luck to you

Zoo med shredded snake aspen is my top choice although it is a little pricey. You can buy bulk bags of small animal aspen (made for hamsters, rabbits, etc) and save money that way. Just make sure to never use pine or cedar wood shavings as they have harmful and toxic aromas/ smells that can harm your snakes respiratory system.

In that case you wouldnt have to change or downsize. Keep the same container for an adult :)

Yes you can, no problem. Just make sure you have a lot of hiding spots & foliage/ fake plants so your baby snake can feel safe & secure!

Corn snakes have a long life span so I wouldn't recommend to anyone who isn't willing to invest in their care long term. I purchased my 2 corn snakes as hatchlings and they are now 22 & 23 years old.

@ThatsSoReptii

corn snakes are very sweet once they get to know you and calm down. Additionally, when they are babies they have such little mouthes and teeth that even if they do successfully bite you, it hurts less than a papercut. Most of the time baby corn snakes do fake strikes where they wont even open their mouthes. But once they grow bigger they really become docile and nice to hold! Good luck with choosing your snake 🐍

should i get a baby or adult corn snake and how often do you need to clean their urine and poop?
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 2 года назад
It depends on your preference. Would you like to raise & watch your baby snake grow into an adult, or would you like to skip all of that & maybe adopt an adult corn snake? Its really up to preference. You should be spot cleaning urine/poop weekly. If you see any soiled bedding just remove it and discard. You should clean the entire enclosure every 5-6 weeks (in combination with weekly spot cleanings

I was just wondering if you know what the smallest corn snake breed is? As I want to buy one but i dont want it to be to big.(by this I mean length in inches)
@nightinggale6470
@nightinggale6470 2 года назад
There are no corn snake “breeds”. Corn snakes are one species. There are many different morphs but they all reach the same length. They generally get 4-5 feet.

I'm not sure where to actually look to buy a corn snake that won't actually break my bank account and I'm hesitant on buying one online and I cont really find a good site, do you have any recommendations?
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
Sure! Are you in the USA/ North America? Or in Europe/ Rest of the world? Theres many places you could search for a snake that wont break the bank. Here in canada corn snakes range anywhere from 20$ up to 1300$ & more! If youd like to not break the bank i suggest a normal morph, they are available almost EVERYWHERE. Search online for local reptile breeders in your area.

Is it pretty normal for a baby corn snake to crawl up the side of the tank all of the time?
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
If your snake is eating, drinking & pooping all is good! Your snake is probably comfortable with you and doesnt feel the need to hide

Hello, im just not sure getting cornsnake cause their bite, i read some comments on another video that they got bite from cornsnake and the snake just left the tooth, is it a rare cases? And how to put the snake off if it biting you? Thank you.
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 2 года назад
Corn snakes are not very bight-y at all. It is possible to get bitten, although its super rare. Its even rarer that they leave a tooth in your skin! I have 3 corn snakes & have never been bitten. The worst they do is false strike at me, which means they “lunge” towards me but dont even open their mouth wide enough to actually bite. They usually false strike as a defence mechanism before actually biting you. They are very docile & once you get to know your snake, bites become nonexistent

it depends, each snake is different but you can always take them out during the day even if they are in their hides. just dont bother them too many times during the day. once your snake is settled you might notice a lot more activity during the day

Can you leave them unattended to go on vacation?
@ThatsSoReptii
@ThatsSoReptii 3 года назад
Great question! They are VERY low maintenance and have no problem going 1-2 weeks without interaction, but you will however need someone to change& replenish the water bowl as it evaporates quickly (and they drink a lot of water!). Your snake will be fine going 2 weeks without food, and most 1 week trips are perfectly fine, as younger snakes only eat once per week. Again, you can leave them unattended but you will need someone to fill up their water bowl :)
