Just to be clear - clumping bamboo does spread, but it does so in a slow and predictable manner, with new shoots emerging at the outer edge of the patch. Consequently, patches of clumping bamboo can eventually spread into areas where you don’t want bamboo, and it’s hard to discourage new growth from appearing. I finally had to remove an entire patch because it was getting so large that it threatened to block access to my back gate. Very arduous work.

Running bamboos are so beautiful tho. If you build a barrier and don't place them near a neighbors fenceline, they are well worth it. Especially if you have a bit of land larger than your typical suburban home plot.

I'm going to profoundly disagree. About 10 years ago, my neighbor who previously owned the house next door planted a few short height (grows about 4 to 5 feet tall) running bamboo plants on the other side of her yard, not near our fence line. She sold the house in time, and for a couple of years her bamboo stayed generally in that area. Flash forward a few years: The bamboo is taking over her entire backyard, has come under our fence and replaced all the grass in over 60% of our nearly 1/2 acre backyard, has choked out the roots of all the decorative plants and bushes on that side, is growing up and through and heaving up my patio stones and alongside our home's foundation (it can break up concrete), and is heading for our front yard. It is profoundly difficult to kill. Burning doesn't kill it, you can poison it but it will grow back, it has no problem with harsh winters, and its roots are very strong and wood-like and grow horizontally up to four feet deep, so to remove it you have to use a pick and shovel and completely open up the soil, and if you leave so much as a nib of root, it regenerates-- believe me, we've tried. There are dozens of videos posted here on RU-vid by people trying to figure out how to get rid of running bamboo. Some mortgage lenders in the South are even requiring removal before approving home loans because of the damage it can do-- this stuff is a nightmare. For now, we mow it close to the ground, since the current owner next door is unfortunately pretty do-less, barely bothers to mow, and won't coordinate with us to remove the bamboo plants from their yard, so renting a backhoe for large scale removal attempts would be a wasted expense. In its native countries, it has natural enemies such as insects and animals that eat it, but in the States we have no such thing, so do yourself (and your neighbors) a favor and avoid it like the plague.

@astridexplorer5096 I should have clarified. They make specific barriers built for bamboo. These are a dense polycarbonate sheet that goes anywhere from 2 to 4 feet deep. They are used by cities to stop roots from going under roads, sidewalks and buildings. They are professional grade and had your neighbor installed a bamboo barrier around the entire perimeter of their plant to begin with it would have not escaped containment and taken over the neighborhood. Once you allow it to do as you have stated, you are basically owned by the plant. I'm sorry that happened to you. Also, I was speaking more so on large properties (such as cattle ranches or farms). No running bamboo is suited for any property less than 20 acres+ in my opinion. For those smaller yards, stick with a tiny clumping bamboo like graceful (textillis gracillis). Take care

Rule of thumb: If the name of the bamboo begins with Fargesia then it's a clumping bamboo. If the name begins with Phyllostachys then it's a running bamboo and should be avoided like the plague.

Fir multiple reasons I don't worry about it being invasive,n ot even a tiny bit, I live practically at the Arctic circle... 6 months of ground frozen solid and no sun at all around December and January, add 1m or more of snow... So getting bamboo to grow at all requires quite a bit of work and money for the heated and lighted greenhou

Running bamboo of the shorter varieties absolutely survive extremely harsh winters. I do not recommend them in any form, but if you put them in pots be aware that they can and will send roots through the drain holes into the ground and take over your property.

HELP! Is my lucky bamboo clumping or something else entirely?? I've had mine growing in water for 28 years now & I'm seriously thinking about a much more natural & biodiverse environment for it come this spring. Snails, black worms, freshwater clams, shrimp, fairy shrimp complete with a good pump/ filter system too. (It's about fricking time? OR if it grows in swampy areas I gotta rethink this choice.) PLEASE, any & all knowledge about lucky bamboo is _greatly_ appreciated. 💕

You should get away with clumpers like Fargesia Robusta Campbell or Fargesia Winter Joy in zone 7, maybe in zone 6, but don't expect to grow as tall as in more temperate zone. Some of the more recent cultivars of Fargesia are very hardy, they'll survive down to minus 20C or even lower with very little leaf drop.

😂, bamboo are known to hold the land and prevent soil and earth washing away from rain. Yes, they do grow tall and this can prevent sun light to other plant but this is the same to pine tree or other tree that grow very tall. A good example would be the red wood tree in California. No other plant grow there other than red wood. Another tree would be the sequoia tree in California. Those forest is bare of any other plant other then those tree.

Not always true! Our clumping bamboo turned Ito a running one once it was pot-bound, and found its way out of the structure. This year we will dismantle the structure, pull the entire hedge over, chop it into sections, rebuild the planter with stone, replant half back in, and donate the rest!
