I have a buddy who uses an acoustic electric with Fuzz, and every other effect that can pickup the signal. Some stuff doesn’t work, but most effects do. He gets his own unique tone.
I also bought my High Road at a Bros Landreth show - the guy in front of me in the merch queue grabbed the last one, so Joey ripped his off his board after the show and signed it!
Rhett, one of my favourite videos you've done in a while: long-form content, effects-based deep dive, a topic you're clearly passionate about. A very fine Compendium - great job!
I consider it a completely different monster to what we usually associate 'fuzz' with nowadays. I use my MK1 clone as more of a super distortion just for the meanest tone possible
I have 4 different MK1 clones and they are all very different. The more simple the circuit the more important each component is. Reeves Electro has made a few great examples.
The individual octave circuit found in the EQD Hoof Reaper was also released as a stand-alone pedal called the Tentacle. For around a hundred bucks you can use it to add an analog octave up to any other dirt pedal as instructed in the video.
Hey Rhett, I'm happy that you've gotten the T.W.A.N.G project up and running! That being said, I would like to propose a joint venture between our foundations. I represent T-P.A.I.N, which is the Tone Paint Addiction Intervention Network. So far we have managed to rehabilitate and provide ongoing therapy and temporary housing assistance for a bunch of guys we found living in a dumpster in the alley behind the Murphy Lab. I look forward to working with you toward a better future for the tone obsessed. 🤘
@RhettShull Can you make a video for the Red Hot Chili Peppers (John Frusciante) similar to your Kurt Cobain vid? I seriously think he is one of the greats but most people don’t agree. His solos are so simple but have all the goods
@Rhett. Two thumbs up way up. This format of comparison is good to hear differences. Keep doing it. Great episode really appreciate all the hard work you did. Keep rocking.
What about the Game Changer Audio plasma Fuzz?! Im curious if its really in line with a traditional fuzz? Is it a gimmick? Can it be tamed? Ha CROM! Arnolds only words in Conan the Barbarian lol. The secret of steel.
Lmaoooo you know they'll be people in the comments like "the centura is a little woodier than the ryra but the ktr just has THAT mojo...mmm tasty" or some blues lawyer boomer stuff like tht
Wow, great video! Curious as to which one of these pedals or one you didn't list would most mimic the fuzz tone from the old Kustom 68-70 K200 A-4 model, on the amp its called a "Harmonic Clipper" that has the fuzz as used by John Fogerty, CCR? Very unique sound, the amp also has a "Selective Boost" much like frequencies you'd get from an old Fuzzwah pedal but its on a switch instead of the variable pedal. Man, if that pedal also had the same vibrato as the Kustom A-4 it would be the end all pedal, in my mind anyway, lol
T.W.A.N.G. actually had me going for a minute. I felt so seen. Finally, there was a cult for me. Alas, once again, the faithful must face scorn and ridicule from the RU-vid elite ;) xoxo
it's a cool pedal, personally i don't like it, but i own it, and i appreciate it for what it is, and i agree that it would be nice to see some of these blues youtubers (or youvalvers if you're on the other side of the pond) try some more experimental kinds of fuzzes like the Carcosa, or some Seppuku or Dunwich stuff, nothing against the classics, and in the end, all the fuzz stuff is based on something classic anyway, but there's not really any sort of hidden gems in here, some great classsics, and some...objectively terrible pedals coughLIZARDQUEENcough i own that one too, and it is hands down one of the worst circuits ever "designed" and by designed, i mean, taking 2 good DIY builders' circuits and mashing them together with very unsuccessful results. it is so bad, and even though i don't feel bad for myself for owning it, i do feel compelled to urge people to not buy it...its so awful, just get a Foxx Tone Machine style pedal
I just got my Sola Sound Tone Bender Professional MKII from being on Macaris wait list last week. So far it is my favorite even over my Boss TB-2W Tone Bender. I paid a lot of money but damn they are very good.
I personally am not a huge fuzz user, at least not as much as I used to be when I was really into the my bloody Valentine/Siamese Dream era pumpkins brand of shoegaze. I now would rather utilize fuzz pedals that clean up with volume knobs like the chase tone bc109c, benson germanium fuzz (which has an impedance knob) and the warm audio warm bender. Would love to try the Mythos Golden Fleece or au79. Seems similar to a germanium fuzz face.
Starving the voltage to a circuit cuts the headroom. Thus raising the noise floor. It's like a weird type of compression that I should shut up about and go make a new circuit.
Bought a 1966 arbiter for $1200 bux. Best fuzz I've ever heard. Gotta get it down to like 65-70F or put it on an ice pack if its too hot. Sounds insane on my 68 super lead.... Takes all the curves and spits out something colorful. Also the knobs act totally different depending on if its ran thru the THD hotplate or if its just ran in to x2 basketweaves @ 8 ohms... If you got paper voice coils WATCH OUT. You gotta either use an attenuator or run it through 2 cabs because this thing is a speaker burner.
I bought the octahive v2 a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. It can do the lower gain fuzz, ring mod type of octave effects, and even becomes gated with certain settings. I was torn between that, the octaland, and the DBA octave clang that just got reissued. Id still love to try the others, but ended up pulling the trigger on the beetronics. I love how small it is with my crowded board. Now I just have to figure out how to fit the benson germanium preamp when it arrives, if I decide to keep it, which, based on all the demos ive seen, is very likely.
Can you upload that drum break somewhere or even a pay what you want link, would love to play over it. So fire! Half way through the vid, I'm subbed on another page dw.
I used to hate Fuzz. But then I got an Analogman Sun Face, and everything changed. Now I have numerous. The Sun Face is still up there, but I also adore the Wolf Note Over Fuzz pedal from Midnight 30. Very small maker, but insanely versatile fuzz tones covering a huge range.
“what i have access to” while speaking about pedals can be translated to absolutely everything when you’re friend with Josh Scott I guess :’) great video as always ! :)
I like this style of comparison of a type of pedal. The more the better! It's a good resource if somebody (such as me) is in the market for the next pedal to put on their board.
Golden Fleece and the FZ-1W are straight fire man. One of the best out there though... S.S.B.S Mini. Chefs kiss on that one. Almost forgot... SilkTone. Most versatile fuzz there is. Well... for fuzz...lol.
Rhett, absolutely loved the video but I missed KingTone. I think you should check them out. Jesse, amazing guitarist formerly of The Hoax, makes amazing pedals that you definitely will love.
"All fuzz sounds the same" if thats the case All distrotion sounds the same All overdrive sound the same Distrotion and overdrive sound the same All compressors sound the same All hall reverbs sounds the same All ...ugh people piss me off
The "Shigeharu" actually says Columbia (コロンビア) on the label. I think you may have misidentified that one, Rhett. [ Edit to add: So far, I've only had the budget to buy an EHX Octavix and a Deluxe Big Muff 𝛑, which is fun with an expression pedal for the mid sweep.
Helluva nice list of pedals. I think I have something from each category but if there was 1 category that was not included it was maybe "fuzzstortion". The ThunderClaw pedal might fit here. Golden Fleece might actually belong here? Velvet Fuzz by Wampler? Just a thought but seriously - great job!
I don’t get it Rhett. I was only 5 min into your video when I was sure that you weren’t playing the pedal you were speaking about when you cut to the guitar playing only. It’s the same fuzz each time. Why? What is the point? JJZ…(°¿.°`)
