Watch This Before You Buy A Porsche 718 Spyder

I jump behind the wheel of a 2020 Porsche 718 Spyder, the third generation of the Boxster Spyder.
From the moment it launched, I fell in love with the looks of the 718 Spyder so I was super excited to experience it. Finally this generation of the car is nearly mechanically identical to it's hard topped brother, the GT4. With a naturally aspirated 4.0l flat-six engine putting out over 400hp, it should be one of the best cars you can buy under £100,000.

This video illustrates what I've been saying about car reviewers for years. They're only good for a year or two, still excited about new cars, and able to express their enthusiasm without clouding it with supercars experiences. Once someone get behind the wheel of the very best of the very best, or at least the fastest of the fastest, it's only natural to look at other cars has a little less. That would be fine if you're speaking to an audience of fellow car reviewers or people who have driven everything and can relate. Most audiences however, consists of dreamers like myself, who wants to know just how great it is to get behind the wheel of a car like this one, 400 horsepower, convertible, mid-engine Porsche, and loving it for what it is and not at what it is not. Very few reviewers resist the jading that is quite natural.

There’s another perspective though. I’ve owned a Boxster and a 911 and will be buying something newer in the next year or two. Eligible vehicles were a 911, a Spyder and a GT4. I want a manual transmission for the driving experience and I thought a Spyder was the perfect car for me but the long ratios are really making me think twice about it, it’s a valid issue if you want to play on those medium speed curvy roads. Rowing between second and third while staying in the power band but not driving too fast is the sweet spot experience I’m after. I’m really starting to think that if I want that crisp mid-engine handling with the kind of driving engagement I’m looking for that I’m going to have a Boxster S in my driveway. I’ve driven the base Boxster with the T4 and couldn’t care less about the engine sound, they are awesome to drive and have more mid range torque than my 911 S. My 911 S sounds awesome between 5k and 7k but it’s not practical to drive like that. The midrange push from the turbo actually makes for a more fun daily driver. So these little details will matter a lot to someone that has owned cars like this before. What is important I think is to bring it out in a way that is factual and technical and doesn’t just sound like elitist whining.

@@wallymcguire2033 get a BBR tuned mx5. Go for the Mk3. 300bhp. Manual. Short ratios. Add under chassis bracing. Or an mk1 tuned to 200bhp. But be warned: to test drive one is to buy one. And especially so if you are used to modern Porsches.

@@wallymcguire2033 Replacement gear set from RPM Technic will sort the gearing if you go Spyder/GT4/GTS. Boxster T or S are fantastic and already pack enough punch for the road. I agree on sound, STG is simply a whiner in this regard, there is nothing wrong with either the 4 or 6 pot 718s other than the OPF quietens them down.

This is genuine open question and not a criticism - I was wondering whether you (& other RU-vidrs) have become blasé with cars? You get to experience these incredible machines so frequently that the “meh” factor is closer to the surface than someone who may only ever get to drive a special car once in their lives. Again, not a criticism, it is human nature to a certain extent.
@86Rikki

Yeah that has to be the case. I’ve gone from a Z4 to a base F type and I am blown away and totally in love with it. These guys are driving super cars on a daily basis so they’d think my car is slow and not wow enough.
@rssimracing5057

I think its alowed them to realisticly compare 🤷‍♀️ I drove a basic A3 and was blown away because I own a 300 quid shit box. But that means that I couldn't realisticly give criticism and compare an amazing car against other amazing cars and my opinion would heavily outweigh the information and any unique personality of a car would be flattened by my own rose tinted glasses. But I do understand. I asked a guy who drifts Mercedes for a living if it gets boring. He said "It doesn't get boring, just normal" Thanks for listening to my TedTalk

Yeah I totally get your point, whenever I drive my mates RS3 that’s tuned to over 400bhp I’m blown away yet he’s had it a year and finds it boring on most drives now. 981 Spyder wasn't a GT4 underneath. Suspension was not the same. 718 Spyder however has the same suspension as GT4 (which adopted from GT3), and is 3k cheaper than GT4 in the US. I personally would take 718 spyder over 981. Exhaust is an easy fix; suspension is not. JCR Titanium pipe sounds amazing. Just my opinion.

A friend just decided to get a spyder and directed me to Sam’s video - the second I heard the voice I yelled “Seen through glass”. She was impressed at my Kreskin impression though I’ve been a big fan of the channel for years. Anyway, she picked it up yesterday, insisted I drive it home as she was anxious about taking it on the freeway. I found it’s handling fantastic as well as the throttle response. I have 7 classic Porsches and love it’s refinement. For her, the car will be fantastic for our Porsche events and drives as she is a bit tentative. The car looks and performs beautifully and hats off to Sam as he was apparently the deciding factor in her making the jump. Love the channel - keep up the great work in putting us in cars and a mindset we would otherwise not experience.

oooh Sam, harsh words about the Gen 1 Spyder, my dads first dip of his toe into the world of Porsche, it was fantastic, really quite aural and alive, it had bags of personality over a standard boxster, he used it as his daily, took it on numerous runs through Europe, down to Southern Italy on one run, over the Stelvio pass ( on a day that had more cycles than cars so it was a steady drive!), the roof wasnt even that much of a pain after a few goes it all worked, he wishes he had have kept it forever, but alas Porsche wanted it back to help get him the next car, which he dutifully bought, which then led him up the garden path for a Speedster, they took him to launch night at hotel, let him sit in one, spec a very personalised one, then he asked to pay the deposit and was told "Geoff, this car isnt for you...." bit harsh I thought, and I know where I would have told the sales team to go, but he stuck with them, now has his allocation on a cherry red Targa Heritage edition coming in the autumn.

I guess my problem with cylinder deactivation is that it adds unnecessary weight and complication to the engine and the engine isn't inherently balanced when running on 3 cylinders. Without that, and if the body was full aluminium, i reckon they couldve lost 100kg. seems quite heavy at 1500kg. carbon tub would be even better but then ur into 911 turbo prices

Great taste, heritage interior with the carbon buckets and the metallic grey finish really bring out the car to me. The only problem being a grey 718 Spyder unfortunately screams James Dean , so I'm probably a no go on that. I do think it would be epic with some GT4 long tube headers and maybe a Sharkwerks gearbox update if you have the dough. Really just a lesser expensive compromise to the 991 speedster which, by all means would be the dream.

Your comments are spot on. I have been driven a Spyder 718 for two years on race tracks and left some of the Cayman GT4 behind me. What a joy, a convertible overtaking a true race track car. By the way, there is a video with the famous German, Walter Röhrl, comparing a 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman on the race track. Both equally fast! If you challenge the car and drive it at its limit, what a great performance. How often can you do this on a regular road?! Now, after two years, I am going to trade my 718 Spyder for a 981 Spyder. Indeed, I got „bored“ a little bit, as you have mentioned in your clip. Struggling for a while before making the decision, your video convinced to change the gen 3 for a gen 2 model. The 981 provides you with way more emotions, particularly because of its sound and but also its agility. With a light motor tuning (in the 911 its has 400 HP), the car has equal performance as the 718 Spyder. Last but not least, on the race track I am going to use an older Cayman 981 GTS which has respectable performance and is more designed with a fixed roof for this sort of driving. Sorry for my English. Greetings from Switzerland, PD

Nice vid again Sam. I am actually glad that one RU-vidr has now actually said the new 992 Turbo S (is mental and quick etc.) and this Spyder or Coupe 718 GT4 (is a brilliant drive) BUT are becoming boring after a small period of ownership. Its not just the sound but they are becoming too everyday cars which is probably for the market as the majority of the owners will be senior in age and not drive these machines anywhere near their limits. WIll the GT4RS variant of the 718 due next year perhaps be different? OR will the sound again be a major factor? I for one will be chopping in my 718 GTS 2.5 (thanks porsche with the release of the N/A) for a GT3 991.2, if I can make the numbers add up. In my opinion, if you want a proper porsche then this really is the sweet spot.

Sharkwerks can re-gear the car with shorter gearing and can put a proper exhaust on it .. for a price obviously.

So you have to ship your car to the USA to have this done!!! 20,000usd later you might as well have bought a better car to start with!

This seems to be the consensus. Matt Farrah was saying the same exact thing. I know for the mountains I drive, I would definitely want that. But never mind, I’ll just be over here in my Miata. 😂

Particulate filters ruins the sound. If you upgrade the exhaust, which I think you should always do on a GT series, its incredible.

Agree with you...if you want the ultimate Boxter / Cayman, it has to be gen 981. Sound awesome, slightly prettier, full of character.
@Maximumrandom69

718 spyder is prettier and drives better than the 981. The only thing it needs is an exhaust - just like every other new car nowadays.

Max X It's not pretier. Rear end and lights look much plainer, actually seems older...whilst I agree the steering is sharper on 718, Without removing PPF's completely, it will never match 981 for sound. Spit and crackle unmatched!

This seems like more a true spiritual successor to the speedster than the “GT3” Speedster to me, thoughts?

Ian Clennan 991 Speedster a big whale compared to the compact noble 718 Spyder. If you live in England and want to drive B roads then this is the most ideal car Porsche currently sell
@maurosquertazzi6545

True, because the 991 Speedster is the ultimate and only real Speedster ever, not like its predecessors ! The only one which can cope with it is the 356 Speedster.

@STG, Sam i think you can address the shortcomings that stand between the Spyder and perfection. 1 - Short gears from DeMan, 2 - Lightweight flywheel from Ninemeister, 3 - an inconel x-pipe cat back exhaust from Kline

It's indeed long-geared, but we need to learn and start to use all the gears, even the 1st. Then it all makes sence.
@gky3019

adrianius pakius those gears will never make sense, it sucks that porsche needs to defend the 911, and therefore dont make the cayman what it can really be...

GKY I’m collecting a 981 Spyder in a couple of weeks. Sharkwerks in Fremont swaps out the 2,3, and 4 gears but I’m not sure I need that.

One reason the gearing is long is because of distance do want to shift 10× to go 5 miles and less wearing on the clutch . In Germany there are long distances between towns . You need shorter gearing when are turning alot.

I own the first Generation Spyder. Wouldn’t trade you even for the 2nd or 3rd generation Spyder. The 1st Generation Spyder was based on the Porsche 550. Keep it simple and light. My car is about 400 pounds lighter and whenever I drive it the handling brings a smile to my face. Sure the second and third generations are faster and brake better but the overall driving experience is better in the first generation. A friend of mine has a original 356 speedster and he feels my generation Spyder is closest in comparison to his car.

I have a 718 GT4 in the US. Sound is incredible; tall gearing complaint overdone; the car has plenty of torque at 5000 so shifting there is still a blast; on a track amazing; every minute in it has been a joy.

You’ll always have to mod/tune a 718 or Cayman yourself to compensate for Porsche’s sandbagging to protect the 911. A new exhaust and gearbox mod are totally worth the cost, and it’s one of the few cars where you’ll recoup a lot of the money spent on modding upon resale as everyone knows they’re essential. When set up properly, this is as good as anything on public roads. I’ll definitely look at a lightly used one next year.

The first thing that confirms that it is a proper driver's car is it has NO buttons on the steering! That itself is so refreshing to see in an age where the steering is loaded with unnecessary buttons

Got the 981 spyder and I personally would not change it just for a stiffer ride all the time , if I want that type of ride , I just press the sport+ button . But the sound track of the the 981 engine is to die for !! !!! So much better than the 718 !!!!

I’m from the US, where you can find plenty of full-size, two lane back roads. I’m always impressed by how fast you Brits go on those narrow roads. When I come across 1-1/2 lane roads here, I proceed cautiously around the blind corners. I agree about the look of the car - exquisite. Too bad about the gearing and exhaust note, although I would buy one if I had the extra cash.

It would be awesome, if you could make a video of the 981 spyder. I am heavily considering it, and would love you comparison with the 781. There is no great content about the 981 on YT, I believe it will grow in value and become very interesting for a lot of people.

As a road car the 981 Spyder is as near perfect as you will get. Fast, agile, unbelievable sound, better looking (to my eyes), ultra rare and £20-£30k cheaper. Pick one up now, it’s the bargain of the century
