Gosh I sure missed chatting with you guys on here. Honestly, the days that I get to plan, film, and edit are the days that fill my cup up so much. :) Annnyyyway, for all of the new beekeepers and....there is even some info in here for more experienced beekeepers! I hope this video helps give some light to the grand debate of should you start a hive with a 5 frame nucleus colony? A 3 pound package? How about a 10 frame deep? Each option has different pros and cons for each beekeeper and experience level sooo I hope this helps! And if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!! Oh ANNNNND I live in Michigan so anything I say here could be different for states down south! If it is...let me know! I'd love to hear your opinion and experiences on the topic too! And finally...we have a few nucs left! So go to the link below if you wan to pick up a BeeFit nuc this spring!! Okay byyyye :)

Feed and give pollen supplement and drawn comb and you will be able to collect honey fr them Then feed sugar for them to winter on .

Better yet, don't be greedy. Leave them enough honey to make it thru the winter.

Your doing a good job teaching bee keep its hard to video tape and work bees at the same time. I did a few of swarms last year and editing and up loading . Was different for a old guy like me. Leaning editing for a 66 year old was tuff. Anyhow thanks for sharing. Gary in PA

There is so much to learn in beekeeping but that’s what makes it fun! My best advice is to jump in and learn as you go. It is so much easier to understand the information you are reading that way

Always buy a nuc , its more money than a package but the best value imo. Especially an overwinted nuc as you know they can survive winter ( assuming you bought from same climate as your own). In my country shipping nuc is no issue

I believe it all depends on price and nectar flo and pollen.. For all new beekeeper should get nuc the queen has frames to work on while bees build new comb ... package bees have to start from scratch... There's a lot of thought that should go into before getting bee's

You probably can't get nucs yet in late March so only packages are available. But package started in late March will be the same progression as a nuc you purchase in April. So if you like doing the work and want to save a buck, buy a package in late March. A nuc purchased in April that is already established will be about the same comb wise as a package started in March. Now if you have frames of good drawn comb already on hand to give the package, it may be the best bet as the queen can start laying almost immediately!.

So I am pre-new beekeeper. Because of foundation expense. Can I use partial pieces of foundation? When and where in the hive.
@beefitbeekeeping
@beefitbeekeeping 5 месяцев назад
A partial piece of foundation in the frames? Is this plastic foundation? If there’s a way you can cut the plastic foundation in half and then keep it attached to the top bar in the little groove that is usually inside a wooden frame then yes we could. Or you could just go full in on using plastic foundation (make sure it is pre waxed) in half of the frames in the hive and in the other 5 frames that fill up that hive use starter strips to make them foundationless. The reason I say half and half is because I would be a little nervous to start a brand new hive fully foundationless without any guidelines for the bees to follow. If you spaced out plastic foundation for every other frame that would force the bees to draw out each plastic frame and each foundationless frame correctly or it would interfere with comb on the frame next to it. I hope this makes sense. If not let me know and I’ll incorporate it into a video!!!

@@beefitbeekeeping Yes, Thank You for quick reply. And yes that makes more since than my thoughts because after they get half way down and there is no guide from the frame next to it they would or most likely would, do whatever. That also aligns with other videos i have seen. I didn't mention i am down in Texas just 80 miles N. of Austin. Y'all take care! I have package bee's coming from Georgia. Your thoughts on package bees is pretty common, so i'm hoping i can beat the odds and get a good start from them. Besides the cons you said about packages i may put a queen excluding entrance to stop her from leaving.

O fogot to tell ya look up Blue Sky Bee Supply there in Ohio. Best place to get honey bottles where I get them and lids. And I use 7 mil laytex gloves to work hives. Its hard for a bee to sting through them. And I use a Kent Williams hive tool Kent is master bee keeper. Just for a few things for u too think about.

I had a package of bees arrive with the queen cage not secured. I couldn't see it and thought it was missing. The bees were calm which told me there was a queen there somewhere. Since I didn't see the queen cage (lots and lots of bees), I thought she was loose. I did my usual spray with sugar water (bees need water and food from the long trip by mail) which calms them and bunches them up. I poured them into my hive. Thinking the queen was loose, I thought I would just leave them alone for two weeks and before inspecting for brood. When I went in to inspect I saw no queen and no brood but bees were still acting as if a queen was present. In a queenless hive, the bees are agitated Very loud. After pulling some frames, I noticed a ball of bees at the bottom of the hive. Not ever seeing such before, I reached in and brushed the edge of the ball. Low and behold there was the queen in a very small plastic queen cage the likes of which I had never seen before (I had always gotten the wooden screened box style). For two weeks the bees took care of the queen in her cage which now caused me a problem. The colony was two weeks older with no brood on the way. Any nursery bees were maturing into foragers and older bees were starting to die off. Would there be enough nursery bees left to care for the first batch of brood? The hive was a ten frame with honey and pollen stores in place. I put in a sugar water feeder and a small pollen patty. The goal was to give them plenty of food to, hopefully, keep more bees in the hive taking care of brood and not out foraging. These are Russian variety which are known to be pretty tough and for rapid build up. Still another week to go before I dare peek inside to see how she is doing. The lesson is to not make an immediate assumption without a more diligent examination of the potential cause(s).
