Hey thanks for the video! I plan on grabbing the apex trigger the maxwell and the 13lb spring do you have rhe links to these or the name of the maxwell and spring? Also any light suggestions that will be flush with the end of the gun ?
@@JakeCamo Pretty sure it’s just their awesome social media girl dropping the perfect hilarious comment. But if they legit do it, it would be a legendary “own” 😂 I’d have to eat my words on that one. Heck, I’d make a follow-up video about how S&W is an honest company.
This review is just so honest - and I can sort of see why channels don't make reviews like this because companies won't back them. But this kind of info is what people really want. It also points customers to the right product. Love that S&W came in and commented here. Legendary if you actually put it in your next email.
I can't believe they haven't teamed with Apex to make a true metal (steel) version of the M&P. With an Apex trigger it would be right there with Canik and Walther
@@Blrdddd22223Probably. I’ve got a steel framed Walther and love it. But most of ecosystems-holsters mags etc-is built around the M&P series, so for me a steel M&P would be super enticing. I’m hoping they’ll come out with one. If not, I might just have to get the new 5 inch steel PDP…Or both lol
Yep, it’s the perfect team-up. If Canik can team up with Taran, then why can’t S&W team up with Apex? 😅 S&W unwilling to admit their triggers aren’t good enough maybe?
@@NightwoodGuns Very true, it would require some humility on S&W's part! Mec-Gar makes white label mags for tons of companies, so if Smith is too proud, there are ways to hide the relationship.
I’m glad you’ve been enjoying! I’m stupid for doing it, tbh. There are good reasons why people paywall honest info. I’m keeping this up for as long as humanly possible because it’s barely sustainable. As long as I keep getting sponsors, I can do it.
I really don't think $750 is alot of money for an M&P performance center pistol. VP9s at my ffl are anywhere from $750 to 1k. Glock MOS are $650-750. And Glocks suck. PDPs are about $700. So yeah, M&P with a comp thats optic ready. Good price for an accurate gun.
Wait until you find out that he graduated from ASU Summa Cum Laude. He's a screenwriter and a twice published novelist who just happens to be a gun nerd. 😁
I happen to agree this is one of the better channels I’ve been to. It’s honest and direct and is not working for the industries. I have very special interest because I lost the use of my dominant arm 12 years ago. I had to go to using revolvers I currently use a chiappa rino 357 2 inch. He uses because the recoil is nothing with this particular revolver. It’s Moon. Let’s concealable I basically carry across carry bag. If I went to a M&P like this, it would need a lot of attention on the recoil and and would have to have a red dot mounted on it to help me rack the slide. I did contact Smith and Wesson. And they don’t have any intention of putting safeties on this gun in the near future. I’ve been trying to avoid going to a.DA/SA SYSTEM
I love how passionate you are. You can tell that you don't just want to have a RU-vid channel, but you want to experiment with guns and you want to get information out there. I really enjoy watching your channel.
@@FiringLineShooting Thanks man. Thats exactly why I’m here. I’m also a consumer and a guntube viewer who got burned a few times and wanted to do better. I’m doing my best, making some mistakes, and improving along the way 👍
I know you have the BUL Armory Axe Tomahawk... as do I, and I j just picked up the Carry Comp. So, how does this compare to the BUL, IYO? I'd love to see a comparison video!
OMG- thank you, I’ve been looking at the M&P 2.0 Compact 4” barrel pistol anti like it a lot. Then came the M&P Comp and it obviously works but I rather wait a couple years until the perfect it Thank You for having the heart of a teacher and I greatly appreciate your sobering experience and comments about this pistol 🔫
I’m not sure how many thousands of rounds you have to put through them to get the optic to pop off but I have 4 M&P’s all with over 20,000 rounds on them with the original optics that I torqued on there years ago and I’ve never had an issue. And I rack my pistol off of the optics at least 75% of the time.
21,000. You are close! 🙌 Jokes aside, I think it’s more of a QC thing. I’ve seen 4 fly off. 2 of them I knew the person and I am certain they were torqued properly. All of them failed in the same way. Granted, I’ve seen hundreds of people in person whose optics didn’t get yeeted.
Great job Brett!!! Love the truthfulness and being picky, this really gets to the nuts and bolts of things and allows us to weigh the Pros and Cons. In the end, we get to make the decision to purchase or not. Did I purchase it based on your recommendation? Yes, but with the caveat that I changed out the spring, the trigger and of course added a Holosun SCS so that I did not have to either buy or rely on the plastic plates. I added a light and the only thing to "resolve" is the lack of stippling on the higher parts of the grip module. Brother, you were so spot on that I just had to give you your props publicly!!! I'll let you know when the amount we accorded reaches my account. 😅😂😊
I share the peeve of S&W not putting suppressor height sights on the new Preformance Center M&P's. I have the older V port version and those models can with suppressor height sights.
S&W has terrible suppressor height sights though. They are just standard white 3 dot. With the terrible plastic plates s&w come with the scs is the best option on this gun unless you want to spend an additional $70-90 on metal optics plates.
@@Jeeper906 This is actually a good take. Though I’d prefer if they would have just put the lower 1/3rd Night Fisions on it. That way it would be good with all combos.
Hi, I like all your comments are very honest and very much to the point, abit of a backstory here. i’ve lost use on my dominant arm about 12 years ago. Because of my issues of racking the slide one-handed, I I started using revolvers, which were much easier for me to control. I’m considering moving into that arena now with a semi automatic, but some of the issues that you have addressed here really Home . since I can’t do the work myself can you recommend a good gunsmith? Who does this kind of work on this particular model,, the only downside I have with this particular model is, even after the work would be the fact that Smith is not going to manufacture a safety. Preferences to keep one in the chamber always, in the event of an emergency situation, but I think I can train around this, any suggestions will be helpful with a really good gunsmith who is working with this new model, and incorporating the changes that you talked about others that may be I’m not aware of.
Nonsense about plastic optic plate. The screws hold the optic, not the plate. All this nonsense about plates and after market plates. I have them all.... no difference at all, EVER. 6K rounds a year through many of these guns and NEVER a problem because I use quality screws with loktite, to spec. Dumb mythologies keep being perpetuated.
I’ve seen 4 M&Ps yeet optics in person (granted, out of hundreds) but they all failed in the same way. Recoil bosses bend or crack, they start to lose zero, then the screws shear. Keep on using plastic, I’m not here to force a metal optic plate on your gun. But I run metal and recommend metal.
Solid ass review! Love the channel and content, thank you It looks like the 2.0 basic optic ready version is the still the move for the price and performance. Add Apex trigger and optic and you’re done. As a side note to anyone, the American Guardians models (blue label equivalent) come with metal optic plates and 3 magazines as well as trijicon night sights
It's just a fad. To me, it makes sense on a competition gun for split times but I rather have the full velocity on a defensive pistol. To each his own. I do like all the cuts on the slide. Buffalo "CREEK" ammo? Really? Uh-huh.
I am very elderly. With that came increased sensation (recoil sensitivity), loss of some strength and aging vision. Iron sights don't matter much, although at close range I was able to use the iron sights of this same model pistol, which I purchased over the metal frame for its' increased concealability. I put an apex trigger on the pistol and it gave no improvement in trigger pull or pull weight, so I took it off. After 400 rounds the plastic sight mount for my Holosun 507C broke. The only negative I have for this pistol. I have ordered a metal sight plate and a Timney trigger, and, after watching this video, I have ordered the 13 pound recoil spring. I had completely given up on 9mm because of the pain involved in shooting the round, but I am very happily and comfortably shooting 9mm again. Except for the cheap sight plates, this pistol is a 10 out of 10.
Can someone please tell me what magwell that is? It looks really nice without being gigantic like a competition magwell. And the fact it uses factory baseplates is fantastic. Edit: scrolled down and saw that it's an SLR Rifleworks magwell.
I know the dimple itself is an import thing but that doesn’t preclude higher texture. And even then, this is a US made gun so that shouldn’t even matter.
Yes, you offer helpful info; as usual, I didn't know about the backboarding. I am considering getting one for range toy only because of its aesthetics. I have not done so yet because it didn't have manual safety. I avoid pistols with no manual safety or not have the option to install one. The 2.0 may be.
I really like this offering as well as the Shield 2.0 Carry Comp... If they would offer with a manual safety, I would consider one or both...just my preference as options are a good thing. Those big window dots rock, but for edc, I would use the Holosun SCS-MP2 Gr. for this pistol...lower and no plate to deal with.
Let’s be honest. How many folks here have bought any firearm and have not changed a single thing? If we were all carrying around the factory piece with no personalized changes, mods, upgrades, etc what would we have to talk about or post? There would be no need for the aftermarket. Trigger and iron site upgrades are all easily accomplished and personalize your firearm - both in this example better than a stock Glock. -which to the average consumer, is an upgrade. It’s legos folks. Great platform with some above average features and room to take it to another level if you choose to. Regardless, good video with some strong points!
I appreciate your take. You make a good point 👍 My intent is not to bash the gun, just to share my picky observations. Maybe it’ll help someone prepare for the costs of potential upgrades if they decide to purchase. 😎
Apex trigger, SLR Rifleworks Magwell, Calculated Kinetics optic plate, Holosun 507 Comp, Ed Brown guide rod with 13lb recoil spring, Night Fision Lower 1/3rd co-witness sights, Streamlight TLR-7 HL-X. Makes it go from “meh” to monster.
I’ve wanted an 2.0 for a bit and the cool factor of this one sold me. I went with the metal. It’s definitely not my SF PDP, but it’s better than my G48. For me it’s a good blend of the 2. Did I mention the cool factor?! 😂
@@CQNikAhiii Only because you can get a better grip on the longer grip with rougher grip texture. The aluminum frame itself would not offer any benefit.
Fair overview of the plus and minus of the Carry Comp. Smith did make a very attractive product, still has the issues you mentioned. Great on them with the way the port handles the gas as well as the loaded chamber indicator correction for optic users. The plastic plates are terrible. Well done overall. One of your best and fairest reviews.
What recoil spring and guide rod did you go with. As well as what magwell? I went with the metal frame, I shot both and I felt like the metal frame just shot a little better to me. But I have noticed that it is oversprung for sure. I’ve also been wanting to maybe do a rpm system but they don’t have anything specific for this gun yet. Any idea if this is the same setup as the competitor model?
I’m running the Ed Brown rod and spring 👍 My competitor DPM kit fits and functions in this pistol. But I’m working with DPM to get an exact fit and springs for the comp. SLR Rifleworks Magwell, btw. The compact one doesn’t require a basepad swap
I was a police officer for a time. My first issued weapon was a Glock 22. I didnt like that gun. Full size Glocks cut the web of my hand so i prefer the 19/23 models. Not a problem with the 20/21 large frame guns. But our chief thought it would be cool to get the 22C ported models for some reason. He wasnt a gun guy and i wasnt impressed with the decision and neither was anyone else. But that 22C was a way nicer shooting gun. Still cut up the web of my hand of course. But follow up shots placed where you needed them were a lot faster. The fire from retention drills sucked due to the afterbirth coming up at you from the ports. But other than that i enjoyed shooting it. Which is good when it is in your best interest to get good with a particular weapon wether you like it or not. Then one day i just mentioned how i wish i could carry my Beretta M9A1 instead and my chief says "Why dont you? Just go tell Steve (city clerk) how much to send and where to send it to for your holster and mag pouches" So for a year i was getting slide cuts in my hand and a face full of muzzle blast for nothing thinking personal weapons were a no go. But yeah those ports do help even if you can handle the recoil without them. Plus plastic frame guns jump around more than aluminum or steel framed ones. Thats the trade off. The nicer it is to carry the less enjoyable to shoot. I did have a Glock 20 at one time. That gun recoiled a lot less than the the Glock 22 did even with real 10mm ammo in it.
Love my G22. 12 years and not one malfunction. Shoot it as good as any of my 9s. Never letting it go regardless of where all the trends go. Not discrediting anything you said just adding my 2 cents.
@rich1958 The two I was issued never malfunctioned either. 15rds of .40 is also not something to be ignored. I'm not sure the big drive to dump .40 in favor of 9mm by police is a good idea either. The chances of having to shoot through auto body and glass for a cop is at least 50/50 or more. A civilian is more likely to come up against construction materials and the idea is to not shoot through it so 9mm makes a lot of sense. As for the Glock they're not my thing but I feel their advocates who are sold on the product do have a lot of merit in what they're saying. One criticism of the Glock I don't understand , and it's not important apparently, is that they're ugly. I think they're kind of, well they're not sexy, but they're definitely a badass looking pistol. Also my longest serving CCW pistol was a Gen 2 Glock 23. 12 years. My former brother in law needed a gun and he really liked it a lot so I sold it to him with a He's My Daughter's Uncle discount and got something more to my taste and liking . A Walther P99AS. Which I like better but it's not a better gun. Costs less to shoot though lol
Good stuff! If this gun's comp reduces muzzle rise by ~10%, what about the slide comp/expansion chamber on the original sig xmacro? Also ~10%? I think you mentioned once before to not rack the slide with the 507Comp due to its glass bulge? I understand that "return to zero" (where the gun sits after the action cycles) is king regarding speed of follow-up shots (moreso than muzzle rise or felt recoil) and ammo load choice, slide mass, and recoil spring weight will all play a part, among other factors as you know. For self defense ammo, I know your XC and Bul guns reign supreme in the 2011 platform but what striker gun setup that you've shot or owned has yielded the fastest follow-up shots? Thank you sir
I’d say the Macro comp is probably 15% 😅 Yeah, just don’t rack the 507 comp on a steel bar. Otherwise it’ll be fine 👍 As far as striker guns go… The Walther PDP Steel Frame is superb. For a modded option, the M&P 2.0 with Apex trigger and Monsoon Tactical Lucky 7s ports is hard to beat.
Just got myself a 13lb spring from Ed Brown. Metal carry comp. I shoot New Republic 115grain. Ive had folks saying that the lighter recoil spring can cause damage and only really meant for sub sonic rounds. What are your thoughts?
I mean, change OEM stuff on your gun at your own risk. But I haven’t seen any signs of abnormal wear on mine. I have the prototype DPM System en route and I always prefer that since it better protects the gun with the progressive springs. But the 13 lb spring will be fine. 13 lbs is not a super light spring especially with the “comp.” If you are going to shoot a steady diet of +P or +P+ then I’d switch to a heavier spring.
You noticed The exact same things that I noticed. I got in arguments with people because I said that I was super disappointed with the compensation. And they didn't see it ..I also noticed that it seemed like the biggest problem was that it was oversprung. I never got my hands on other recoil springs to try before selling the one I had, but I figured that getting some Springs from DPM systems would probably make it feel a lot better. Just like you, I was super super excited to see Smith and Wesson release this gun... But I was disappointed in the way it felt, especially since the one I actually shot was the aluminum frame one. Why the heck didn't they release it with a steel frame? And why the heck didn't they just put lower 1/3 co-witness sights on it?
Regarding you saying that it’s just a matter of time before the optics plates fail, have you personally encountered the optic shearing off due to the plastic optic plates? If so, at what round count mark?
@@brennanbrennecke3323 Since the CORE was released I’ve seen 4 pop off in person. Two of them I knew the people and I’m confident they had it properly torqued. Both were around 2-5k rounds and they were fairly early on in the CORE release. The other two were randos so I have no idea if they over/under torqued it. And then I saw one fly off of a 10mm after about 40 rounds. Properly torqued. It’s never happened to me because after seeing those happen, I just skip right to a proper plate. That being said, I’ve seen hundreds of people running them without issue but not many people but a substantial amount of rounds through their guns. Just not something I’m willing to risk, personally 🤷♂️ Same with Glock’s OEM MOS plates.
I have an SCS on the way for mine. I like the direct mount, low sitting dot is quicker and feels more natural for me on my g49 mos and pdp pro. Great review!
I do like the M&P but the complete breakdown is a pain in the ass and I wouldn't recommend this pistol for a bug out tool imo. But it really is a nice shooter.
Just mentioned them in the vid. Apex Forward Set metal trigger, Holosun 507 Comp, C&H optic plate (but I prefer the Calculated Kinetics plate), SLR Rifleworks magwell, Night Fision Lower 1/3 sights, Ed Brown guide rod and 13 lb spring.
Really appreciate your non-biased top tier reviews. Refreshing to get real pro/con information compared to many others. Also, S&W really needs to start adding that dimple to all 2.0's for the loaded chamber indicator area.
So would you say get a regular 2.0 for nightstand, ccw, duty use? I love smiths newer stock trigger (thousands through my shield plus so im super used to them). Wouldnt be using this for competitions.
2 questions: what magwell is that? If you”ve shot the previous PC model with ports, how do they compare? I’m considering both the new carry comp metal and the older ported factory ported version. I do have 2 competitors that have been ported by Floyd’s and really enjoy them.
It’s the SLR Rifleworks magwell. And yes, the original ported model is more efficient. But the ports can spray spalling that could hurt you if shooting from retention. Something to consider. Floyd’s porting is better than both, though.
Nice. I shot the Shield version and it seems like not a big reduction, and being 4" not 3.1" meh though looked cool and I would like the longer barrel. And boy, do I have a review targeted right at you Brett coming soon.....
I love this gun. Its great, but i still tell everyone to wait atleast a year after release to buy one..they always have issues with the first few batches. For some reason all manufacturers use their customers as beta testers.
@@NightwoodGuns that's awesome that you got a good one! Look up other videos on this gun. Multiple RU-vidrs have reported issues. It's the same with the Springfield echelon, Walther PDP and the Sig p365 fuse.
As always, if you want the real deets, Brett is the one to go to. I was a little sus with all the overwhelming positive reviews from other channels. Glad to know that that suspicion is well warranted!
My mistake. This gun is perfect. It is revolutionary, even. Smith and Wesson is the best company and every guntuber is great. Except for me, of course. *blinks twice* 🫥
I have limited trigger time behind the MR920P, but the comp does seem to perform a little better. Still nothing like the Radian, but it’s okay. I will say, the M&P is more likely to be reliable than a Shadow Systems 👀
@@NightwoodGunsthanks for the reply! I’m currently able to get the M&p at 50% off msrp so it would be much cheaper then the SS lol could dump it into the apex
@@judahlion5826 Nope, it definitely would have made the video if it did. If you change anything OEM on your gun, I always say YMMV and to test your individual setup. Tolerances can vary, and you may grip the gun differently than I do.
@@NightwoodGuns I ordered a 13# spring from Ed Brown. The ED Brown website states that the 13# spring is mainly for target shooting lighter loads, while the 15# spring is for self defense loads. Are you using the 13# spring just for target shooting and lighters loads or are you using the 13# spring for self defense loads too?
PDP is a great gun. I had issues out of the box that lead to a bad first impression. I’ve already gotten pushback on this video (that I thought wasn’t too bad), so I’m not thrilled about the PDP fans jumping on me about my issues 😅
I have a m&p 2.0 with an agency arms 118 single port comp. I 100% agree with your conclusion that the guns are over-sprung, as I had to go down to a 14lb recoil spring to get the recoil impulse to my liking. I used the gun at a Steel Challenge match last week and found it to be a joy to shoot when tuned properly. its been perfectly reliable with the comp and spring tuning, and i've had over 3K rounds through it in that configuration.
I wonder what a person who calls you picky, thinks gun reviews are for. They are not supposed to be a commercial. (I'm looking at you Sootch). Well done sir.
Apex Forward Set metal trigger, Holosun 507 Comp, C&H optic plate (but I prefer the Calculated Kinetics plate), SLR Rifleworks magwell, Night Fision Lower 1/3 sights, Ed Brown guide rod and 13 lb spring.
