I would love a Sulcata tortoise. But I live in western Washington and know I live in the wrong climate. I did get to know my mom’s California tortoise with the unlikely name of “Fluffy.” She had a well fenced and walled off backyard and California Fish and Wildlife approved her adoption application. He quickly learned to associate the sliding patio door with food and run over for breakfast! Sometimes he’d scratch on the door for what seemed like he just wanted companionship.

Very first example of where Not to live if you want to have one of these Epic Buddies? MY state. Minneapolis here, to be exact. I have been on an animal video binge for the last hour because animals are Far superior to anything else for reaffirming why life and living is miraculous in spite of all of the dumb stuff humans have going on. For some reason I laughed then cried when I saw Skippy giving kissed and Tilly G lifting his face to the morning's over zealous greeting. Reptiles are a very unique species that are unlike any other animal out there. I have two unexpected bearded dragon rescues-first, Kreggles who is tiny and very disabled in his limbs, whose history is murky even though I had to rescue him from my own young teenage daughter who was 15 at the time. He started out being the favorite of a breeder that my nephew knew and he was forced to give him up and hand picked him for Kreggles' care. Then my sister who passed suddenly last May had him and spoiled him greatly. She fell on hard times and my nephew took him back. My nephew made some bad decisions and had to drop Kreggles off at my daughter's father's house where she took care of him in a tiny 20 gallon tank with No UVB and just a log hide for an entire Year! When she decided she wanted to stay full time for the summer she asked if she could bring him. This was the first I'd ever even heard Mention of his existence. I have cared for hermit crabs, a Madagascar hissing cockroach I named George Harrison to quell my fear as I had kidnapped him from neglect and needed to make peace with his bugginess. I've had blue lobster crayfish, mystery snails and a pair of teeny little African water frogs named Pancake and Waffle who loved giving each other piggyback rides, so I was familiar with the process of approaching the unfamiliar. It took me No time at all to see that this little animal was suffering in improper husbandry, which my child was told not to bother to upgrade because he was old and just going to die. Because Kreggles was disabled and did not have MBD, it was very difficult to figure out what he needed outside of heat, light, food and space. But even then the info is often "trending" and isn't fully truthful. There's some pretty viscous human behavior going on in the dragon world where even 'reputable' blogs, pages, channels and groups will follow the same lazy 3 page-in Google search and spread this lazy research as gospel. No one seems to have learned from the several year debacle starting in 2014 in which the "fact" that mealworms would eat holes in dragon's stomachs if you were to neglectful as to choose those as a source of feeders. The attacks were [ridiculous] brutal, shutting down anyone who had the gall to abuse their beardie with them. To me this is Obviously lack of critical thinking but even today similar care abuse is rampant over many choices that are perfectly fine. My motto became "research the research you've researched, then research that again." Computers are a blessing and a curse because of this. Crazy, but No One is referencing their local Herp Society for facts. They are relying on site admins and moderators who have the permission of their 'followers' to censor whatever conversations have been banned from discussion; eg. cohabitation, loose substrate, mealworms etc. I stick around just so that I can pipe in and remind Everyone-even the power drunk managers, that the bottom line is getting to Know your animal. Because they are silent it is so much harder than common pets to know how they are doing. Little Old Man Kreggles has a Huge array of expressive ways of communicating. If he is insulted, like if I accidentally drop his worm in his bath and try to feed it to him afterward he will muster up all of his strength, push himself up on his shoulders-tip his head high and close his eyes Disappearing me. I'm Gone and it's Over. He will sit like that in deep insult for as long as he's still where the 'offense' took place!! Indeed that's just a funny personality trait, but he has many looks and colors and stances that translate to a language that an owner can easily become fluent in should they Actually Invest The Time. Not only did I have to break my summer-loving kid's heart by telling her that being gone for 3 days without securing care was unacceptable ownership behavior-but that having an animal of this type is a Very involved intimate obligation that I was willing to make but in order to do so she had to relinquish the title of ownership for me to do so. Tears all around but she gets great joy from seeing how well he is doing in his custom 40 gallon with its lowered lamps and vintage scarf 'ceilings'. My landlord packed up his adult daughter's juvenile beardie and walked it across the street to my apartment before I could even agree to take a "normal" dragon on. She'd bought him for her young girls whom she only has every other weekend and my landlord felt he was seriously in danger of neglect. So, Link became Pixie and he's joined my weird little pack over here. Bearded dragons are only second to turtles in the horror that is the pets-as-accessories tragedy that is going on. Beardies surpass turtles in popularity right now, so pairing the big box misinformation as starter pets with the tangled "help" that is available in the dragon world and we have an epidemic of neglected, sick, abandoned animals being tossed aside right now. Many-Too Many- are by parents who do not want to be reptile caregivers who are passing this live accessory idealism down to their children!! Sorry for being so long winded but I really wanted to share my story and Thank You for posting such ever important information. You are saving lives with this!! You've made my night and extended my hope for these majestic creatures!
