Sir..How to Set the Feet & Inches Units of Measure in SketchUp. How can use Feet & Inches in Same Sheet, Same Time… 1’=12” but I can’t Draw 1’, 11” Lines…
I’ve been playing with free versions of SketchUp for nearly 15 years, and I have most certainly developed many bad habits. My favorite tip from this video was “group early and group often.” Now that I’m in my 60s, and near retirement, maybe I’ll have time to learn how to use the tools correctly. Thank you for the tips!
i've been using Sketchup for years and the Group and Move tools took a bit to figure, but are the biggest tips for me from your tutorial. The BEST thing i learned was to be able to type the dimensions of a line or square in the lower right box that opens right after you draw something. This way your models can be dimensionally accurate. The next big thing for me was using the measuring tool and placing pick points and points to draw to. I really like SketchUp to mock up all kinds of ideas and concepts.
Navigation hint for the Mac trackpad users: Two fingers drag to zoom, +Shift to orbit, or +Ctrl to pan. Gets around the missing middle click option. Thanks for a great video. I was causing myself issues with click and drag.
Enjoyed this. After working in CAD (solidworks & autodesk) 5 years ago, I was tempted to run with my physical draft right into 3D model from scratch. Having the free version, where all useful Solid Tools are hidden, did not make this easy- of course, LOL. So this little reminder to go back and maybe do the longer and simpler process was appreciated (as much as I didn't want to xD). Thanks for your time and clarity!
Great video! I’ve spent hours trying to get the basics right in the free version before deciding if I should job in the the paid version. This video has given more confidence to keep going! Thanks….
Starting in 2D view can work well depending on what you're doing. I use to stay in the 2D view when sketching out the top down of a building's floor, but something more complicated like a chair seriously needs you to start in 3D. A good skill to have while 3D modelling is simply to be able to identify when to use 3D and when to use 2D. Another tip that I would tie into this is simply not feeling inclined to eventually combine the finished model into one solid model, but keep using separate groups for each separate object in a hierarchy of groups. This allows you to focus on one bit of the model at a time, and allows you to use the 2D view technique for each individual part of the model, however I personally find doing that specifically time consuming and often doesn't get the most accurate results.
Thank you so much (didn't catch your name?)!! I just started using the free online one today because I'm mapping out a relative's farm to show where the electrical cables are buried. This video answered many questions about the program. I wanted to actually work in only 2D, and you showed me that. Who knows where I'll go in this program, so I subscribed just in case! I also appreciate the humorous tangents you went on ... academy awards, etc, haha. Definitely a bonus.
Hi John 👋 Really happy to hear that you found the video useful and that you've subscribed to the channel! We put a lot of effort into our videos and we're glad you noticed. Best of luck on your projects and happy to have you in the SketchUp School family!
Thanks already 1:37 in and you have helped me with starting in 2D vs 3D as this is my first time and I am just looking to import my builders floor plans to play around with a few things and figure out how to put furniture in , and maybe shape some future projects.
Awesome! Glad to hear that tip was helpful! We have a few upcoming videos that will continue to help you with the type of project you are working on, so stay tuned (and subscribe if you'd like)! Also, if you run into problems that you can't solve easily here on RU-vid, be sure to check out our Video Course Library which will walk you through everything you need to know: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library
I did learn somethings that are going to be great as I learn SketchUp. I definitely would have tried to start in 3D since that is the model. Thanks for providing such a great resource
Yes - we are actually just about to post the updated version. Subscribe and turn on your Notifications so you're alerted when we publish it in the coming days.
In over 20 years as a drafter and designer I have used AutoCAD, ProE, Solid Works, Inventor, and CAD Key. I have to say that hands down SketchUp is the least intuitive tool I have ever used. Maybe it is because I was trying to do mechanical design work in this software but it was painful.
Yeah, it seems like folks who come from a traditional CAD drafting background have a lot of habits from those programs that make the transition to SketchUp feel less intuitive than those who come to SketchUp without that background. Lots of changes in how to do things in SketchUp vs. traditional CAD programs.
Yes, you should get a 3-button scroll wheel mouse. Beyond the tips mentioned in this video, the only other recommendation is that you consider streamlining your learning by checking out our Complete Intro to SketchUp course in our Video Course Library: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library
Is this link to the pro version? I won't be starting there…actually just need to do an elevation drawing to get a basic mock up drawn for engineers to get idea of what I am proposing. I was hoping the free version would accomplish at least that much, and I can get a grasp of how it works, take it from there.@@SketchUpSchool
Ok, got the periferal mouse…and tried to download a free app to my MacBook Pro…I was unable to find a free version that didn't say trial version. Do you have a legit site to download from…and do they all try to charge a dollar or whatever? I did find one that looked free, but they charged my cc a dollar and it never downloaded. I canceled but thinking there is alot about this I don't know and ways the consumer might be in danger. Thanks alot if you can help as I'd like to get started.
Hey! Thanks for you videos! I only wonder why its better to start draw in 2D? Im always using top view and parallel projection to make floor plan, never used 2D option for start. Thank you!
The truth is that you should do whatever is most comfortable for you. But in our experience, for new users, it can be too much to try to bend their mind around navigating and drawing in 3D perspective view... and is much easier to get a handle on the basics in a 2D view to begin with.
Hey Alex nice tips there! I am curious which company's mouse do you work with, can you recommend a good mouse? (that gaming Razer Death Adder I bought 5 years ago is no good). Thanks
Hi David - we offer all of the courses you need to go from 2D into a 3D model in our Video Course Library on our website. You can learn more about it here: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library
Random question but since Sketchup is now a subscription do you think Sketchup Pro 2021 is worth upgrading to? I currently have the 2017 Pro version which I purchased. Thank you for your videos and expertise. 😊
It depends on what you are using SketchUp to do. If you use LayOut to document your designs, there have been enough changes that I think the upgrade is worth it. Also, there may be extensions that only support later versions of SketchUp - so that would depend on the types of extensions you may want to use. If you want to follow up with this discussion, send us an email to team@sketchup.com and we'll be happy to continue to help you figure out whether the upgrade is worth it. (If you reply here we don't get notified and may miss it)
You've come to the right place: We offer a Complete Intro to SketchUp course in our Video Course Library on our website. You can learn more and sign-up here: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library
just watched this, i have some background in these programs but its been awhile. im wanting to use sketchup for construction design of equestrian facilities. fencing, barn, arena, property layout. whats the best tutorial/coaching that will get me going to start working in the free program?
We have video courses, but they are recorded using SketchUp Pro which has a different looking user interface than the free, web-based free version of SketchUp... so unless you would like to learn using those courses (you can learn more at www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library), we unfortunately don't know of a course that specifically covers the web-based free version of SketchUp.
Is there more on the free version? I don't want to spend money until I feel confident on a product that I can use Had a go at the free version entered details like measurements, entered metric and in the measurement box it was still in imperial measurements. So that put myself of. So still searching how to do. This is a wonderful tutorial sounds simple. Will keep searching and I'll have a look at the show more above Cheers
Yes, we will be releasing several videos soon that explain more about SketchUp Free so be sure to subscribe and click the notification bell to find out about those videos when they are posted.
@@SketchUpSchool thank you for that. I just want try before I buy, it does take me a while to come grips. Until about10 years ago I used VectorWorks for about 8 years Cheers
Yes, you can create a simple 2D floor plan using SketchUp Free. We have a RU-vid video that outlines the process and while we use SketchUp Pro during the video, we also point out how it can be done with SketchUp Free. Take a look at that video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KVDnb47KBy8.html
@@SketchUpSchool Yeah it's good, as you point out, if you get these small aspects wrong at the start, there'll affect your workflow for evermore. Nice work cheers!
Is this only for paid version of Sketchup as this doesn't look anything like the personal cloud-based version I am using. I've stumbled at the first step - as I haven't downloaded anything onto my Mac, I can't open the Sketchup > Preferences to select Plan.
Hi do you provide any online classes? I bought sketchup online course in udemy, but I feel it very difficult,if you are making any please let me know or if there's any alternatives with your recommendation. Thanks
Yes, we offer a comprehensive set of SketchUp course in our Video Course Library. You can learn more and sign up for a free trial here: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library
I wasn't two minutes into this video and im already stopped in frustration. Sketchup is now web based and doesn't have the menu options shown. Trying to find how to set up in a 2d template and I'm lost. Thanks for the awesome video.
There is a free web-based version of SketchUp, and then there is the paid, desktop application version that we show in this video. If you want to follow along using SketchUp Free, we have another version of this video that will work better for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yEGqe_CQ_wc.html
What are the benefits going from pro to studio? I’m renewing my licence and tempted to go to studio but don’t want to waste $$. If I sign up for pro now and decide on studio later will I still be eligible for the $500 promotion? I’m taking a screenshot in hopes I can speak to someone during the week.
Hi Kara - with Studio (only available for PC) you get V-Ray for SketchUp and Trimble Scan Essentials. If you need both of those things, then Studio could be worth it. If you only need V-Ray for SketchUp (along with SketchUp Pro), then you don't have to upgrade to Studio as you can get V-Ray for SketchUp a la carte (from the Chaos website) with SketchUp Pro for less money. If you need more help understanding your options, send us a message at team@sketchupschool.com and we'll be sure to answer any other questions you have.
@@SketchUpSchool oh wow, thank you for responding to this. I was trying to work with vray for years and it caused issues for me. Took so long and often shut down. Now what I’m reading here is that it’s integrated with sketchup studio?
@@SketchUpSchool I ended up getting enscape because I was so frustrated, I was ready to quit my business. Seriously. So it seems like pro is probably just fine with my work flow now
What version should I download that will work with my Mac since I am on a MBP that has High Sierra on it? Are there older versions that still are available?
SketchUp only offers the previous two versions for download (2022 and 2021). I believe you would need SketchUp 2020. You might contact SketchUp to see if they have a solution for you: www.sketchup.com/contact-us
Hi Alex, there is a major shortcut missing from Sketchup: toggling the Select Tool! Imagine if no matter which tool you are using, holding down the Space bar would toggle on the Select Tool. Is there a way to customize this?
You can press Spacebar to switch to the Select Tool, but then you need to hit a key to go back to the other tool (the key for that tool). As far as making it into a toggle, I am not aware of a way to do that.
Hello, I just bought the newest version, I am also new to this. When I opened sketchup 2021, it only gave me the option of Files, open files, templates. How can I open the area where the colored axis are and start to create model?
We don't have that sort of playlist yet... but we would be curious to find out what specific topics and questions you would like us to cover/answer related to woodworking and CNC routing?
@@SketchUpSchool It would be amazing to address a bit more the ability to construct and edit furniture pieces. Additionally, to post process Gcode to a cnc such as Xcarve or Avid cnc.
Great tutorial and one of the more understandable on the tube! Question... what precision do i need to use for woodworking? I'm designing a flag case and drawing in the height of the triangle then querying the length of the piece. If I set the precision to 1/16" for ie... I could be off by 1/32" give or take. Is that correct? I'm confused. H. E. L. P.
That's right: If you set the precision to 1/16, then SketchUp will round to the nearest 1/16 which means things could be off by 1/32 or less. (And happy to hear you liked the video!)
Loving SketchUp, however, after drawing the 2D walls and grouping them as 'Exterior Walls', I'm unable to push/pull them into 3D walls. I'm seriously stuck, and I've watched several videos and I still don't understand where I took a wrong turn. Can someone point me in the right direction?
A really great up to date video! I am about to embark on a new career to draw property plans here in Spain. I used to draw them by hand so I have a great knowledge of 2D drawings and my students when I taught engineering used to use Sketchup some years back but this is all new to me now. Thanks so much for a great video and especially sharing the notes in pdf to keep. I was going to start with free version and then go Pro, as they say, when my work takes off. Can I still access the 2D plan drawing modules in the free version? Thanks again Sally
Really happy to hear you liked the video! Be aware that the Free version has a different interface than the Pro version. So there will be an adjustment that comes with switching from Free to Pro later. As for your question about accessing 2D plan drawing modules... I'm not sure I understand. Can you explain a bit more? (Please email team@sketchupschool.com with more details as we don't get notified of replies here and are likely to miss your response... we will better be able to help you if you send us a message)
Hello, I'm facing thins problem in SketchUp I'm updating a scene after offing profiles but when i click on the scene the profiles are on again. can you please help me

Really useful - I didn't even know you could start off in 2D. What a difference! I've found all the videos I've tried so far lose me as soon as I start as I can't conceptualise the 3d from the beginning. I want to design gardens and flowerbeds (often unusual shapes as I have to stick to the owner's original bed) - is there any way I can do this with Sketchup?
Glad this video was helpful! And yes, SketchUp is great for designing unusually shaped garden beds. The best way to learn how is to learn the fundamentals of how to draw and edit in SketchUp - those skills will be all you need to then learn to draw the types of shapes you need. Of course, you could try to teach yourself here on RU-vid, but if you want a more structured approach, I recommend our Complete Intro to SketchUp course which is a part of our Video Course Library. You can learn more about the Video Course Library here: www.sketchupschool.com/video-course-library
SketchUp ensures any extensions you install via the Extension Warehouse are safe - that message is there just so that the extension can access the files that run SketchUp, which it uses to operate.
