Should we quit our jobs and head out for an adventure while we are young? Or should we build the nest egg and RETIRE so we NEVER HAVE TO COME BACK? Could we work AND go cruising? A few months ago we interviewed 5 cruising couples who were in their "freshman" year of cruising. Today, we hear from the Seniors. Experienced cruisers with over one hundred years of combined experience give their answers to the questions: Should we GO NOW on a sabbatical? How practical is it to WORK while cruising? Should we WAIT until retirement?

After completing cardiac rehab following two heart attacks the same night and a double stent procedure a few days later my cardiologist advised me to go live my life and not to worry about having another heart attack because neither he nor anyone else could predict if or when I'd have another one. Glad you are going to get started on the lifestyle you desire.

Our situation, we retired early at 58. We bought a the boat and learned: Cruising is truly my life style. I loved it. Cruising is not my wife's life style. She didn't care for the passages. She liked the destinations. She found the fun to suck ratio didn't balance well for her. We were out for three years, a winter in the Bahamas, two winters in the Keys, summers farther north. Family issues forced us back ashore and now at 64, I'm dealing with health issues. The plan is to beat the cancer, find a smaller boat that I can readily single hand and meet my wife at all the cool destinations. My goal is to expose the grandkids to cruising, to circumnavigate the Caribbean. You know about a cruisers plans!

I am 50. Had originally planned to own a sail boat by age 40. Just bought a 44 monohull this summer. 1 kid in college 1 headed there next year. My wife acts likes she's excited but I can tell she doesn't share the passion. She would prefer to take vacations and pay for charters with a captain. She fears the sea and wants to go back to business school. I dont give a shit about proving myself to anyone anymore. I have money but I don't have extra time and my health is not so good, I am an epileptic. She is my partner and best friend but i feel my dreams may drift away.

What part are you in and what are you on? I lived worked in the PI '82-89 and loved it. I have alot of sailing and racing experience but want to do some cruising before it's too late. I keep putting it off for 2-3 years and now at 62, I can't do that too many more times. I've heard great things about Puerto Galera, Mindoro area. I've corresponded with some PGYC people (Puerto Galera Yacht Club) and they seem very friendly. It's a very safe harbor/bay and they frequently have races. I'm betting it's cheaper there than Subic too. But I haven't been to Subic since '89, way before their Yacht Club and I've never been to PG so what do I know?. I did a big dive trip to Tubbataha reef in the Sulu Sea and it was phenomenal. I spent most of my PI time working in Zambales, Luzon (28 miles north of Subic/Olongapo) but did get to do some fun things: Diving, sailing, windsurfing, barhopping, motorcycling, etc. I've always wanted to go back to explore so many places I missed because of my work schedule. My wife (of 23 years) encourages me but something always gets in the way. I'm hoping we get a cat, sell the rental properties and break away. Not sure whether to fix and sell the F-9A (31') Tri I built or mothball it (store it) for a while as we cruise. It's too small and light to do any real cruising (mostly just a racer, daysailer and weekender). Just a little tip for learning to sail well - One of the best things you can do is hook up with some racers, even if you don't plan to race on your own. Racing sailors will know all about trimming the boat for speed and safety. It doesn't have to be a big boat either. You could learn more about actual sailing in 4 weekends than bubbling around for 4-6 months on your own. With 7000 Islands to explore in the PI, I think you should spend a season or three doing some island hopping there while you learn the ropes of sailing. You are in a true paradise and you might not realize it.

Seeing this confirms the mistakes I've made in life, the biggest was waiting to buy a real sailboat until I was 50. Lasers, hobies, trailerables are not the same. Cruising is something I should have done when i was 28 yrs old, even if I had to return to raise kids on land for a bit. Instead I am still waiting for my daughter to get into college. I am worried though that my wife does not share the same enthusiasm for a host of reasons. I am seeing how having waited was a bad idea. To those of you who are young and may read this, GO DO THIS THING!!!!

When you look around you realize that even on a good day, life is short. We're are all in the same line. As we age, the earth seems to spin on its axis faster day by day. It isn't easy to unplug from the "energy" the merry go round generates, but it's approaching the time to give it a go. So, we bought our traveling boat, have added some of our own touches and look so fondly forward to stretching our legs in '22. Your escapades and those of the others in this inspiring, rewarding community have put a BIG smile on our faces and packed us full of awe and wonder. There are no boundaries.

Too late now, as I said in the other video, just bought the boat and I'm packing up whatever I want to store for a while right as I type this. I figured I keep stuff that I would like to have in case I find that boating is not for me, so going to hold onto a select few items until then. As I see it, might as well try it, then at least if it doesn't work out, I know that I actually went for it and not just dreamt about it for years.

We retired at 55, 22 years ago. We had a close call with being greeters at Wally World. We have had so much fun with our lives, I wouldn't change a thing. When I inquired of a gentleman who was fishing on the Oregon coast one Monday morning. He told me that when he was 40 and a school teacher he had an epiphany and instead of asking how much money he needed to earn to live his life, he changed the question to how little did he need to live on. He wound up owning a glass shop in Yahats. He changed my life. I only wish I had gotten into sailing when I was young, but that ship has sailed.

Thanks for all the great info. I’m 61 and Jennifer is 58, and we bought our very first sailboat this year, a 93 Hunter 40.5. We motored it 400km from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. That gave me a lot of practice to learn how to drive a 40’ vessel. I’ve driven smaller motor boats all my life but nothing is like a 40’ sailboat. Our friend Craig helped in stepping the mast and rigging and sails, and then we were off with no one to teach or help us. Thank Goodness the first day was very light winds, and from then on we sailed every weekend. Our plan is in 2 to 3 years buy a Catamaran and explore off the beaten path, cross the ocean, South East Asia, Caribbean, Europe, Australia. Wish us luck :)

Thank you for asking the right questions. A news reporter wouldn't have the experience that a sailor has to intervierw sailors. A question I have is How can we leave the world a better place as we travel? Haitians burn their fruit trees for firewood, and don't have enough to eat. Also if you give them chickens they eat the hens, and don't have eggs to eat. Going small, and going now is very good advice so you can learn to sail, and handle a larger boat. A 27 foot corsair on a trailer could be a good weekend fun vessel, and you can keep your job. In Florida we have many places to launch, and explore. THe Keys, and Bahamas are near by.

Great vid guys. You are absolutely right about no one way to go cruising. Me, I am on my third iteration. 1) All in - 38 yrs old and single, working as a professional aerial tramway engineer (ski lifts). Always saved for the future thinking I would need it for family until one day I noticed that I was getting boney fingers. No sailing experience but read all the books and had the big dream so I jumped in with both feet and bought a simple, solid little no frills double ender for $25k. Best choice I ever made. Learned the ropes as I took it around the world in 4 yrs (94 to 98) spending only $9k/year. Came home to Colorado with a huge smile on my face and started saving for the next boat. 2) Work/Sail - Fell into a consulting job building ski lifts in the Caribbean Basin (yup) - we called it an experiment in conservation for profit before the word eco-tourism was invented and we got our arms around as much rainforest as possible getting tourists to pay for it with guided tours of the canopy, zipline rides and even a bobsled run in Jamaica. 15 yrs in the Caribbean, 10 of them on my 50 ft cruising trimaran/office which I bought in California. When it was time to work I docked the boat and lazer focused, when it wasn't I sailed and explored. Often difficult but always rewarding. Lost the boat in St Maarten during Hurricane Irma 2017 (thankfully insured). 3) Retired - on the best boat I ever had which you saw in Annapolis as you drifted by in your dingy and we chatted. It is a one of a kind Maine Cat 40 that is 4.5 ton with carbon fiber rotating rig, all electric winches, maxed out solar, lithium, etc. I have put about 5,000 rewarding miles on her in the western Caribbean and East Coast. Never enjoyed sailing this much before as there are lots of things to tweak and she is easily and safely single handed. (6.5 knots boat speed in 5 knots wind, biggest day so far - 230 nm). Always lots of boat work and maintenance is a little expensive (nothing new there) but she is very comfy on the hook so I avoid marinas and have her set up for long trips. I am now headed to Panama and contemplating another trip around the planet. All three adventures have been equally rewarding and I wouldn't trade any of it. So if you have the dream people - Don't Hold Back!

Excellent episode. Lots of options and you don't have to do it the same as others. Not everyone wants to or should circumnavigate. I had equal loves for the ocean and the mountains. I tried quitting my career job in my 30's to start a business teaching rock climbing, hang gliding and white water kayaking. It was financially successful, but I found turning my hobbies into work took most of the fun out of it. I went back to my corp career after a few years. Then after early retirement I live on my sailboat island hopping between the Bahamas to Grenada for 6 months each winter. Then I put the boat on the hard and go back to my summer home in the Colorado mountains during hurricane season. repeat next year

Wait, this cruiser life isn’t a temporary gig? I was hoping you’d tire of all those lovely sunsets and dolphins and come back to Bay Area TV stations and do your news and weather reporting! In all seriousness, I completely agree that there is no wrong answer for whatever plan one family makes together. I certainly have a belief for what is best in my life, but I’m happy for others that can live differently as long as they are happy and make their dependents happy too. My wife has no interest in the life style (nor can she do it easily for medical reasons) and my young kids need stability, friendships, and a good education. I’m staying in my home till I retire, kids are out of the house, and I can take these golden handcuffs off. Someday, God willing, I’ll live along a coast and if I’m lucky, I’ll get to bum around the Caribbean or Hawaii and Baja for no more then a couple months a year. The rest of the year, my boat will be sitting at a dock and I’ll be taking my wife, family and friends for sunset cruises or weekend trips. And that will be fine.

@jdunn501
@jdunn501 2 года назад
@@stevenr8606 just from normal resort travel to Hawaii and various islands of the Caribbean, Hawaii does seem to lack the large numbers of natural anchorages and has a lot more current. What would be somewhat intriguing is making the effort to get to the non-populated Hawaiian Islands or going South from Hawaii to the Line Islands and then on to French Polynesia. But all of that is much more open ocean Blue Water sailing with long passages. While I’m intrigued by such endeavors, my wife has less then zero interest. The only chance I’d ever have of doing something like that is, in retirement, to join on as Crew with some other mature sailors in Hawaii and then fly home after a couple of months from wherever we end up. Besides the immense distance what makes Hawaii a difficult place for cruisers?

GREAT video!!! I have done all this too. My advice: Try it. If you like it, continue. If you don't, don't. The fact is: Most people, who try it, sooner or later, move on to other things. That's OK. Finally, DO NOT spend a lot of money right away. Start small and go from there. If you decide to move on, you have not spent a lot. Too many newbies go out and immediately buy brand new boats only to discover that the cruising life is not what they imagined. On the other hand, older boats will require a LOT of repairs, often immediately. And seek advice from people who have been there and done it. Do not trust boat brokers who are only interested in selling a boat to you.

great video. I think there are a few more types you can cover on this subject. We are a family of very small means trying to get to cruising...and with kids, or very low income/assets/jobs you can do from your boat...we can't relate to any of these people from the stance of where we are and where we want to be. These people, like most youtube channels, bring quite a bit of assets to the table when they start/cruise. A good show would be to do something similar to this but with families, and another with "poor" people like us. People we of little means can connect to. Again, good job! Nick

Hi Mark, What Nick and Megan said is correct. We have both with with our jobs for a while. I've been working remotely since around 2015 (Patrick was remote even before that). Patrick is a self-employed software consultant so he can work when/where he wants. Mine is more complicated since my job is a regular FT salaried position with a software consulting company, so I'm restricted based on the project I'm working on. The company is very flexible, but I had to work within the US most of the time since my projects were with government contracts (and the government restricts where I can work). My current project has no restrictions though, so I can be anywhere in the world! Since I had a lot of remote work experience and am a valued employee (so I've been told), my company worked with me to find a more flexible project. Regarding our Starfish Enterprise/sailiing experience, I'll be happy to share more if you have particular questions! We're also on Instagram (starfishenterprise) if you want a visual "story" about our experience.

Boat is smallish but then again we raised 3 kids in a small bungalow and 1 bathroom.😳 We should be ok on the boat 😆. We bought the boat last summer, starting to outfit/upgrade it, planned this purchase several years earlier, planned our retirement some years even earlier, bought our first boat more than 10 years ago, sailed that small 26’ boat every weekend and most summer vacations etc, chartered some bigger boats in the Med a couple of times too. Point is, start small and local/charter and see if you like it.Then move up to something bigger. This sell everything, all of a sudden, and buy a boat and learn to sail on the fly - well that could be wonderful or maybe a flop! You need to know what makes you happy and go for it! For us, that is waking up in your own bed wherever you travel, being outside and feeling the wind on your cheeks, not answering to someone else’s schedule…. Go for it but work your life into it by trying sailing and planning your escape. I get the feeling the O’Kellys took a similar approach. Cheers to all the people watching this video and reading the comments - wishing you all the best of luck for a great transition to liveaboard life. 👍

Eh, they are all small on the ocean. Having had big and small boats, I can firmly confirm that 33ft is the optimum size for ownership, while 40-45 is the optimum for livability. Lol. So on some days you’re happy to have a small boat and other days happy with a bigger one! Regardless, I do hope we see you out here this season!

That’s really nice of you to say. We aren’t the types of people that care much about that sort of thing…doesn’t matter much. Based on meeting so many viewers, we are pretty sure we know why there are fewer subscribers than might otherwise be expected…. A HUGE portion of our viewers watch on smart televisions, and the RU-vid app on those TVs doesn’t make it very easy for the viewer to “like” or “thumbs-up” a video or even to subscribe…and that means the algorithms are less likely to promote our videos. Also, we don’t often ask viewers to like or subscribe or whatever within the videos. At the end of the day, we are blown away that so many people watch and reach out and comment…and become real friends in real life oftentimes. It’s friggin amazing! So, whatever…we don’t have so many subscribers….who cares? Those that we do meet and interact with are fricken amazingly cool folks! Quality over quantity? IDK. Anyway, those are our thoughts on that. Still almost 100k? That blows us away.
@MariyaKondova

You not constantly asking people to subscribe or like is another think I love. I recently discovered your channel as I am trying to make a sailing sabbatical a reality and we know that it comes at a cost. Your channel has definitely some of the most useful and real content for people pursuing some kind of sailing dream. It feels like your content is really meant to help people with similar projects and even though you don't care that much about the number of subscribers I truly wish you that your channel gains more popularity. Although almost 100k as you said is an amazing achievement, definitely something to be proud of! Keep up the good work, be healthy and enjoy your lifestyle. Who knows, maybe someday our paths will cross somewhere on the ocean. In the mean time, I have many videos to watch, I still haven't seen. ;)

Excellent episode. My wife and I never went full time, but did get out for months on end. Frankly, I don't know how people manage to maintain a RU-vid channel. I barely found time to snap a few photos. After a shipwreck we've gone back to our original small boat, which we never sold. Still dabbling and considering a bigger boat. Now we have a much better idea what we'd need on the next boat.

@@TheOKellys Okay everybody. Long story short. We were in The Gulf of Mexico trying to beat darkness and a storm. Both caught us. The plan was to take the channel to the backside of North Captiva Island and anchor on the sheltered side. Did not know that a storm had changed the channel since we were there last. Charts were no good and the bouys had not been relocated yet. Ran around and was getting beaten up by the waves. Abandoned ship in a large Sea Eagle kayak we were towing. Paddled about a half mile in the dark and landed on the island. Tow Boat US couldn't get it off and it broke up in the night. We were fine and it's just stuff.

Great video as usual. We are a couple of years away from heading out the second time. Our first was a transpacific cruise thar spanned 2 years in the early 90's , pre kids. We came back and started a family, a success business and health careers. We sold out to go the first time but will be keeping the dirt home this time. This time we will be retired, the kids are gone and the financial burden will not be like it was the last time. As all but one of the folks interviewed said .. just go..you will figure it out. As 30 year olds we were definitely younger than most cruisers and funds to do what we wanted to do were much tighter. We have stayed in boats the entire time so the move back aboard will be easy.

Wonderful video and so nice to see some old friends on here too 🙌✨ Some of the best advice ever - take it slow, real slow 🙌 Be ahead of maintenance and plan maintenance schedules so your time on the islands are maintenance free - this includes constantly replacing items on the boat as you go - this will save one a lot of frustration and it’s a sweet space to be in when one is actually looking for chores to do on the boat verses the boat demanding your time. Get involved with the locals of islands - this is a massive advantage getting all the inside tips such as where to buy stuff and it’s really fun making new friends with different backgrounds. Well done guys - great questions and interviews - we don’t have time to watch many channels and we do enjoy catching up with yours. 🍻

Great episode. Working towards it. We have our 970 tri in The Gorge (you know what I'm talking about). Have to keep working, but, perhaps, in five to seven years, we'll taking short Spring sabbaticals (Bahamas), followed by another the following years. After that, in nine years, I'll finally pull the plug and, if all goes as planned, a cat and six months a year on board. Hard to beat The Gorge in the Summer, as you know, so six months on (Caribbean or wherever) and six months at home. That's the plan anyway. Would like to go now, but not really possible.

The wifey & I are waiting 7 more years, then considering going full-time in retirement. No sabbaticals for us since we have a good situation currently. Even thinking about just chartering at the 7 year point (and continuing to travel around the world); this way, chartering (might) lead to us wanting to do cruising full-time (or not). Cruising would be cool, yet we could be happy anywhere.

@TheOKellys
@TheOKellys 2 года назад
You certainly know you better than I know you, but one thing to think about is that smaller boats are easier to sail. Really, smaller and lighter is easier to work on, clean, etc. So there is a perception out there that you gotta have a big cat to go cruising. Or a big monohull. It’s not true. Yes, there is less comfort on a smaller boat, but also, doing pretty much anything on a 30 foot sailboat is 1/4 the work of doing it on a 50ft boat. Something to to consider if you do have a burning desire to get out here.

The Delos videos pulled my husband in, and the Wynns videos hooked me. The OKelly’s video on how they picked their cat was our bible for looking at catamarans for us, and we’ve had our Lagoon 380 for 3 years now. Great video. If you are single and have the means, do what you want and can afford. On the other hand if you are not single then you must look at the relationship and do what is best. My wife and I had a family when we were young. We had careers that were "boots on the ground" that we loved. The option for working remote or seasonal was not an option. Today we are retired but once again we must decide what is good for he relationship. Myself I would be sailing in a heartbeat but that does not work for the relationship. Today we are home based RVers, We travel 5 days exploring the wilds of the PNW and spend 9 days home. It works for us. Thanks to RU-vid, I can enjoy seeing many of the places from my wife's office computer monitor. Life is fragile but also good.

@@TheOKellys There's probably a reason why I haven't found any youtube channels for solo/singlehanded sailors out there. lol :) Plus it's probably harder to do camera work with just one person I'm thinking. I think if you do it as a couple, just the act of sailing together could really challenge a relationships strength. You really need to be in a healthy place with someone to be able to endure hardships like you can at sea, and to also be able to spend 90% of your time with them too. There's not a lot of places to find alone time out there. I'm sure as a solo sailor that finds crew once in a while, I would guess there is a huge trust issue that goes into selecting someone that will share your home with you while you make your crossings. Hopefully family could fit that bill for short spans when you need them. :) Maybe its easier than I imagine to make friends with someone who shares your passion of sailing to crew for you long term.
