Yea same here. Never had an issue with any of my Mossberg 500s. Used to be a hobby of mine buying $100-$150 used 500s cleaning them up and selling them. Currently have 5 in my stable. I love the 500, best bang for the buck. Versatile, can convert from a 500 to a 590 and back easily. I’ll keep my eye out for this issue tho I can see where it could happen.

I got one used and put some new parts in - I understand the plastic safety switch issue they had but how the guy busted the firing pin I have no idea. Anyway, the firing pin replacement required more disassembly than I was comfortable with but all the other new parts and accessories were easy to do at home.its been my goto gun ever since.

@@niclavalliedrums8537 slightly thicker barrel, and the metal trigger group. A 500 slugbore barrel is thicker than a 590a1, so in essence, if you put a 590 trigger assembly and a slug bore barrel on a 500 you can say it's "built better".

590a1 is the only one that is rated for military/police use

3 years in the Army 6 years National Guard, I carried the M 203 much more cumbersome and heavy than a shotgun and didn’t drop them.

@soundspartan, so if you knew your M16 could malfunction from a simple eight inch drop onto a hard surface, you'd have the same confidence in the weapon? And, because you never dropped your weapon in four years of service, you believe you've eliminated the risk. Your attempt at safety analysis and risk mitigation is comical. Why not loosen the lug nuts on your car. If you manage to drive for four years without an incident then you should declare there is no risk from driving with loose lug nuts.

Had a 500 for 40+ an 88 for 20+ and have run thousands of rounds through each. Had my 500 so hot dove hunting I could smell the wood on the forearm. And never a problem. Although I make it a point not to drop my weapon. Interesting video though

Yes your right we were taught to treat our weapon like our penis to always keep it as close to you as possible and to always keep it clean every chance you can when in the field but may I point out not everyone went in to serve and are typically just home bodies, just everyday people. You see I am a NRA instructor and teach many people self protection with a weapon in and out of their home as well as handgun instruction so they can get their state issued concealed carry permits and after 20+ years of teaching it I can honestly say that almost none of the non service people will act like a military prepped person will and especially when scared for their life, when fight or flight mode kicks in and there knees begin to knock they most typically try to run for safety and will most definitely drop their weapon a time or maybe even two if they even stop to pick it up after the first drop. You were in the service so you know that teaching a regular person how to control their fear and make it work to their benefit when their senses get heightened during that fight or flight mode and how to control their breathing and then dig down deep inside themselves to try and control their heart rate so as to lower their blood pressure well some people just can’t do it. They are going to be as scared after day 10 as they were the first day you tried to teach it to them. Moral to this long blast is not everyone is a marine and not every civilian can be taught what they really need to know! Thanks for reading and God Bless us all....

My 500 has the safety peened down on FIRE! In RED , Forward. Metal safety. My safety is my right index finger. It's the only safety I trust . So it's the only one I use . Thinking about a metal trigger upgrade, I know the plastic is fine. I like to shoot fast , especially if a animal isn't going down .

My 500 is the breacher. I keep the mag full, chamber empty, and safety on. I don't make a habit of dropping any firearm, so I've never had to deal with this condition.

This shotgun is still a great firearm, and regardless of this issue is it still a dead reliable shotgun. Don't throw it around and it will work every time.

it only had 2 rounds through it, not 2 boxes, even a gunsmith said it is a reject, mossberg will not take it back or fix it... i use it as a pry bar now and it works great as a pry bar

'Mossberg' makes some great weapons. No, they are not as heavily built as the 'Remington 870' line of shotguns, but they are still great never-the-less. I do agree with Koshunae that treating these firearms with a little respect will go a long way in keeping them reliable.

Hank Schrader my 2 older ones are wood stocks not the plastic so a plus to me but my boys both of there's are bout 4 years old and been dropped once or twice each and never had an issue at all.

Careful with your Remington! I've heard that if the fall off a cliff while holding the 870 in a certain way, your thumb can become lodged in the magazine tube because of the faulty lifter and then left for dead.

@@larryfoster2227 Funny you should mention the 870 elevator. While training in the sheriff's dept. we had a guy get his gloved thumb stuck during reload. Non issue for me because I never wore gloves, neither did he after that.

I have unloading from truck in a case ! Also if you trip in the woods it's better to drop then hold on so think things through

I had my glock in my shirt folded on the bathroom counter while I took a shower and when I got out I forgot it was in the shirt and picked it up, well my glock hit the floor (loaded one in the chamber) and all it did was knock the rear sight to the left wich was easy to fix

I had this same issue with my 870 express tactical. I changed out the extractor to a non-MIM one from Brownells for like 20 bucks, and replaced the spring/follower with a higher quality version of each. Now it works borderline flawlessly. Now, that's some extra work/expense and shouldn't need to be done in the first place, but it's definitely something to consider. I still keep a 590a1 as my HD shotgun but after doing those things the 870 is actually worth a shit.

@@melektaus2906 I have never had an issue with an 870 of course most are wingmaster but the express has never failed to feed with exception of trying to do it....and as far as 500 and 88,590,835 I have never had an issue at all like this but I did get the 500 to pop after 8 drops from almost waist high and it has to hit literally perfect....a well molded bead of epoxy will fix the issue..I would trust my life to any of the mentioned above...go ask jerry michalek how many times his mossberg has failed ....and look how old it is he throws it around....this was something someone did to try expose a flaw he clearly doesnt care for mossberg.... he probably the one to go out and get the most expensive benelli he can and uses and the guy comes to the range with the 88 and wore his ass out shooting so he wanted to make a point..I want to go buy six to just c if it was these 3 that did it come on sale that shit to someone buying someone showed u that shit and u ran with it.....

just ignore it. This is an unrealistic problem that out of thousands of rounds through a number of 500's I have never ever seen. This guy went out looking for a problem with his shotgun and had to more or less make one up. You will never see this in the field.

+Jon Walker A reproducible problem is a realistic problem. Just ask any testing engineer who is responsible for ensuring that something is up to the task, whether it be software or hardware. It's a fool's argument to say, just because one has never experienced a problem with a given thing claimed by someone else, that the claim is invalid. I can envision many use cases where this claimed problem would result in failure and possibly even the death of the operator. Running at Port Arms when you slam into the door the fleeing suspect quickly shut behind him, and now he's in the middle of the room with no exit, so he turns toward you, and you're jammed? That was a very short drop needed to cause this failure. Not much of a bump. I'm so very glad dochinson made and posted this video. I'm already designing the fix. If you ever said what you did at Ishmash they would have angrily beaten you and then banned you permanently from the entire complex.

Adam Churvis it is also a fools argument to manufacture a problem and then expect he company to be at fault for said problem. if you go about looking for problems then you will find them. if you put gravel in the striker channel it will fail. well then glock needs to fix this problem right? no, it is an unrealistic issue does not need mending. the Mossberg 500 passed military trials which I assure you included dropping numerous times. This has never been an issue and still isn't. You have to drop the gun a very specific way several times in order to reproduce this malfunction.

It's only after this point that engineers, through customer feedback, learn of elements of the thing that should have been tested but were not. Most of the time, with experienced design engineers and testing engineers, these additional tests could not have been guessed during prototyping because the failure would have seemed virtually impossible at the time. But now new tests must be added to the regimen, and the potentially failing things replaced, retrofitted, or refunded. A very close example to this shotgun lifter issue is the safety issue that happened with the well-tested Remington Model 700 trigger mechanisms, which would occasionally fail. Almost eight million rifles recalled because only a few of them failed, but it was a failure that could now be tested properly, and the test failure discovered a flaw that could be designed around to solve it -- again according to these same tests. Accidental discharges are important to fix no matter how rare; I argue that any design flaw discovered at any time is important to fix if it can leave the operator vulnerable.

ffemt917 Could that work yes. But you shouldn't have to do that to a new shotgun that is supposed to be made to be a fighting gun or defensive gun. Adding things only create more chances for something to break. I just use another brand of shotgun now for duty or serious use.

LooseCannon H Mossberg used to be my favorite shotgun before this. They are still fine for bird hunting or for a plinking shotgun but not for defensive use. I mentioned in my other comment why I bought a few to make sure it is all of them and not just one. You say you've never had this issue. Have you ever dropped you Mossy on its side as shown. If not you can not speak on this issue. It is a fact it does it as I show and the part they sent did not fix it. If you drop any of these shotguns from 1 foot or more on its side it will jam. Try it on yours if you like.

I go to the internet to learn, I speak from my experience. . You call me "internet expert" yet you use "factual data" to back up your case. I started using Mossberg 500s in 1975 and was given a 590 in 1988 to use in bowling pin matches and early tactical shooting matches. That`s 41 years of falling, bouncing and holding the gun while dropping to the ground, this has never happened. That`s my experience. I asked a former Marine firearms trainer and he said this can happen on well used Mossbergs, the "Elevator Assembly" wears out and needs to be replaced..He also said in a life of death scenario it would be more likely your shotgun being hit by an in coming round then this pin popping out. Finally, I dropped my newest Mossberg repeatedly, on the 5th drop this happened. The gun has to be perpendicular to the floor and when I racked the slide the pin popped back in on first try. No disassembly needed. You said Mossberg sent you a replacement Elevator, did this fix the problem?

LooseCannon H The replacement did not fix the problem. Also I have done this to several of my own new Mossbergs and to friends Mossbergs and it happened with both. Also when racked it jammed the action up because of you wasn't expecting it to do this you would rack it hard. The reason it didn't in the video is.m because I babied it. You can say what you want but I prove that it does it in the video and can make more videos showing it also. It's a fact it does it as shown no questions asked. New or old any Mossberg 500,590, or 88 will do it. Now I'm tired of arguing with so either watch video proof and accept it or you can find yourself off my channel.

LooseCannon H I've been in combat, and I can report for certain that people have dropped their firearms during a firefight and did not die. I got shot in the leg once at a full sprint with 100 pounds on my back, which caused me to faceplant right onto my weapon, and I didn't die. I picked it up, got to cover, and shot the prick that shot me. I still didn't die. If my weapon had jammed after I dropped it, I might have died. The guy in the video has a point; you don't. He said right in the video that he uses them for shooting, but not self defense, so apparently that's why he buys them. I'm glad he showed me the flaw. I may or may not do something to fix it, but at least I know about it. I would definitely address it if I was taking my shotgun into combat.

The shotgun test is a pass-fail test, not a competitive test to identify the BEST gun. The test is nothing more than a minimum standard a gun has to meet, it has nothing to do with what is the best gun. All a company has to do is submit a gun for the test and if the gun passes the test, then they can bid on the contract. Since Remington and the other shotgun makers at the time could not produce a gun as cheap as Mossberg they would not be able to under bid Mossberg, so only Mossberg bothered to submitted a gun for testing. If you know you can't beat another company's price, why bother spending all the money to submit a gun that you know you can't get the contract for. All the Mossberg advertising that "Only Mossberg passed the grueling Government test....." was at best misleading advertising, if not unethical. Only Mossberg submitted a gun.

Technically it was the 590A1 that passed all the military tests. The 590 failed towards the end so Mossberg made the 590A1 as a military grade version. I wish though, if my 590 had a steel trigger guard I’d feel more secure with it lol

40belowful I tried that and it didn't work.

Use a black washer bigger than the pin then put jb weld in the center of the washer . Then Paint jb weld black .That will weld the washer to the pin and the pin will still move but without popping in ..If you need to take apart in future just use a punch and hammer off washer.

that's a GREAT idea. I've not shot mine much since it's a '15 model & I have many shotguns BUT I will do this as a simple fix just in case.
