My biggest issue with the end of net neutrality is that it has the potential to sequester information based on class. "Oh, you can't afford the news site package this month? Well that's too bad. Good luck doing your University assignments." Limiting access to what is functionally a newage library based on how much you're willing or able to pay for it is downright Orwellian.

I normally like how Funhaus tries to be nuanced and not take sides on stories like this, but I really don't think this is the time for that. Net Neutrality is so incredibly important to the internet as we know it, and I don't think that it is a good idea to give anyone who is unfamiliar the thought that it is anything but.

Think about school students. Homework is assigned through online quizzes or online copies of textbooks. Research databases are used instead of physical books. Students basically need the internet and that is why I think it should remain a public utility.

I really appreciate Bruce bringing up some contrary points at the beginning of the podcast. I wanted to just add to the point that people who oppose Net Neutrality and want the free market to decide are often operating under the assumption that "well if your ISP is throttling your traffic, some upstart will build their own ISP and you can use that". I seriously doubt that would happen. Creating an ISP is insanely difficult and expensive in today's world. I mean shit, Google tried to get their own service going but ultimately failed, at least the first time around. I can understand why people might have this view of less government regulation but it's too late, as far as ISP's go, to let the market dictate it.

Dude Soup always fucks me up because the discussions are relatable enough for me to want to chime in. Occasionally there's that sweet, sweet moment that someone says /exactly/ what I'm thinking and I get to see that discussion play out. Other things that fuck me up include: the fact that I reflex typed "Dude Supe" instead of "Dude Soup." Good podcast, lads.

I hate how people use the the argument “We don’t want someone regulating our internet”. Guess what someone is always going to regulate it, I’d rather have the government do it. That’s like letting companies regulate water, we regulate those companies because in the past those companies would fuck the consumer. Without competition these companies don’t have to care about what you think.

I know some have gripes about the more serious topics that have been popping up on the podcast lately but I really enjoy these segments. There's still plenty of funny to go around and I appreciate the diverse and genuine opinions that the gang is able to provide.

We should start charging more for water and stop treating it like an infinite commodity that will never run out. $105 for a barrel of water.

I enjoy the fact that Funhaus is talking about this, the conversations that this group has are always well thought out and they always have information to back up their points. They all have their own insights and thoughts and never only think about one side, they see the problem/issue as a whole. These podcasts make me love this group even more.

It breaks my heart that with the end of net neutrality might be the end of funhaus. I'm here to play a bit of devils advocate against net neutrality: paid prioritization is a huge potential asset to smaller hedge and private equity funds who lack a direct fiber optic connection to the stocks as opposed to big banks; we can also look at the deregulation in airfare way back in the 80s and look at the number of airlines, options, and prices nowadays, it's exponentially cheaper not only due to technology, but to increased competition that prompted the take down of the barriers of entry into the marketplace...I digress, this subject has been beat to death and I just wanted to shed some light on an otherwise grim political decision

This time last year I wrote a part over this for my English comp 2 class. What really bothered me was the number of students that had no idea about net neutrality and didn't care even after being told the issues that could come from it. Ignorance is bliss to a certain point.

Call your Senators, let them know you support Net Neutrality! 202-224-3121 and tell them to vote “HELL NO!” on their shitty tax bill as well!

As someone who works for a smaller local telecom company that provides internet service too (our only competitor is spectrum BRUCE!) maybe some will find my knowledge interesting. Firstly the reason there are not more small local company's has nothing to do with traffic but the finances these big companies have, spectrum could offer free internet to all of the areas we serve and it wouldn't even be a drop in the bucket to them, but would drive us under in days. No matter what we charge spectrum will ALWAYS charge 5 to 10 bucks less a month for the same service in areas we both serve but over $100 more in areas we don't. We would have to put in our own fiber to serve those areas which costs ALOT, however, the second we do spectrum will under cut us and few of their customers will go through the trouble of switching providers, so we have no reason to put in new infrastructure. Our ability to grow to new areas effectively stopped the second spectrum rolled in, new companies who don't have any existing infrastructure have no chance at competing. Thankfully the company I work for has been in the area longer than spectrum and we have pretty good customer loyalty. Also we are NOT excited about net neutrality at all, it won't make us more money (Netflix isn't going to pay us to give them a fast lane where they definitely will pay spectrum). Ultimately the only people who will benefit are the few big internet companies, don't buy it when people say it will help smaller companies, we wont be able to take advantage of it without loosing customers.

Y'know it was always my dream to come work for you guys ever since I first found you guys back in the early-ish days of IG. Even went to school for editing and A/V production and shit. You guys might not think that much of funhaus, but for some of us it's our dream job.

I'm so glad you guys mentioned that sometimes ISPs will change prices without telling anyone. I remembered that I just got my internet bill a few days ago, so out of curiosity I looked at what I was being charged versus what was offered on my cable company's website and realized I was paying for 300 mbps download at a rate $10 higher than a 400 mbps plan they had. I called my provider to ask about this discrepancy, the guy on the other end said "oh yes, I see here the price of your plan did change, but you 'qualify' for our 'special offer' to get on the 400 plan at the rate you saw on our website." He literally just flipped a switch and I got faster internet for $10 less per month. That would have never happened if I hadn't watched this podcast and looked into it. This is why when Ajit Pai claims that companies can be trusted to not take advantage of the consumer people say he's FULL OF SHIT. If you've been on your internet plan for a while, you should check your prices again to make sure you aren't being taken advantage of.

At about 34:00 Bruce says “I don’t understand how anyone can trust a company.” Meanwhile I’m sitting here asking “how can anyone trust the government?” It’s a difficult issue and there are passionate people on both sides. Net Neutrality, Title 2, and the FCC only regulates ISP providers and not the companys supplying the content, allowing FB, google chrome, twitter, etc.. to collect and sell your info for profit. Before NN, the FTC controlled the internet protecting your search and purchase history from being collected and sold for profit. NN's name sounds good but what it does is transfer the power of the internet from the FTC to the FCC. FCC requires company to ask for your permission to sell your data, in other words the terms of service that you HAVE TO AGREE TO, to use, allows them to collect and sell your data. FTC protects the consumers privacy while using that service, not allowing any one from collecting and selling your info

Capitalism isn't the problem, government is corrupted by politicians with special interests in corporations and kick backs. True capitalism is the best system for a free market, but what we have is far from it's true, pure form.

Funny update to this in 2019. Received an e-mail on my comcast account at 12:01am on New Year's Day that they will be introducing a "data pay plan" for their internet service. So, instead of just giving me the internet I pay for... I get to pay them like I'm using it like a god damn phone. Exactly why I laughed at people when they said, "less government interference will make for good free market business." Yeah, that works if you have business that want to give people things for fair use. Problem... The telecom companies don't give a flying fuck what's fair or if you can afford it. They know it's a necessity in most households. Now they've given them free reign to repeatedly and consistently fuck people over. This is going to screw so many people. Internet is impossible to function without at home. Kids have to study and do homework. Parents need it for work and everyday life events (bills specifically). I can only imagine that this will be step 1 in a several step process where they try to flood people into actual buildings to use the Internet and you'll have to buy passes to get into those places. That's what the end game feels like. Just more and more push until people have no choice or options on what they want to pay or where they can go for important everyday tools. Just leave it be when it's working okay. Change just for change isn't change at all. It's stupidity,

I've been bingeing on old Dude Soup podcasts recently. There was a point where in back to back podcasts, Lawrence would say, "Oh... I shouldn't have said that" after saying something hilarious and out of place. I could count on him to say it! It reminded me of Hagrid in Harry Potter, whom I love. It hasn't happened in the most recent ones, so it must mean Lawrence finally got this whole professional video game journalist thing down now.

Bruce plays such a goofy character in the funnies that i sometimes forget how sharp he his, its refreshing to see the boys use some of their smarts in this podcast. Good job guys i recommend this to all my friends, keep it up

Internet should be considered as a resource to be provided to everyone--government should regulate the providing of it to ensure it is even and fair, but that is a fallacy in and of itself. There is no good answer in the system we live under.

Would suck if Funhaus ended after the net neutrality stuff, but we're lucky to have gotten so much free content already, thank you guys for that.

Hey guys, working in infrastructure, what is going to be the deal with that? New ISPs will almost definitely not be able to function because at some point, somewhere their data will cross a line or a server owned by another ISP, no new ISP is going to install a nation wide network before attaining a customer base. So if one starts up in California, it has to transfer across country - hits Comcast the second it tries to leave the state, comcast then can hold it to ransom "Oh you want to connect to Amazon.com? No sorry, thats on our infrastructure. 5bn a year to rent this service" They can gouge and destroy each other, you may end up with fragmented service availability with the big 3 destroying anything else but having a deal among each other to pass that data freely, not to mention packet labelling or encryption to pass restrictive firewalls will slow down the internet a fuck load, that takes over twice as long to verify and process than a regular packet.

These conversations about policy and corporations always remind me of Mr. Robot. We talk and posture down at the level we are at financially, but the guy with the most money has all the power and that person can do some scary stuff with that money. Like get rid of a certain aspect of the law so they can make more money. For example, net nutrality.

My problem is that everyone on the internet talked about Net Neutrality ONCE and then forgot about it completely. AND NOW that the problem becomes imminently closer, EVERY BODY comes together and is "Save the internet" and "Fuck Ajit Pai!" And it's like you said the same thing 2 or 3 months ago and have done nothing about it since then, or at least have not voiced anything about it. This is not a shot at Funhaus, rather, it's just my opinion and what I've seen from content creators I like and watch and other creators with large influences. They cared at the start and then fucked off, and now that it's so goddamn close to being a real thing, they actually care about the problem. It makes me angry because I've personally gone out and sent emails, talked about the issue with my friends, and have done all that I can for it within my power as a sixteen year old.

I appreciate the devil's advocate guys; exposing the audience to both sides of the argument is very important. Thanks!

@ Adam if you were the one to ask why isps tend to have local monopolies on providing internet, one of the main reasons I’ve heard that is is because of the high cost of getting wire to people’s homes. This can be seen in how many of the companies that provide internet now were originally phone and cable companies.

James just explained genetics to me in a way my teacher never could, now i fully understand why i have the eye colors i have (blue) and my parents are both brown eyed. LOL im 34 years old btw :) that "difference" has always been in the back of my head, thank you James and thank you Funhaus. I sincerely wish the USAs neutrality issue will end up for the better no matter what happens to it. I live in Sweden but consume alot of content from USA, plus Twitch.tvs main servers are in the States so if you lose this battle and the companies start nickel and dime all aspects of the WWW the whole world will be affected even if the EU don't change the laws about net neutrality. We will all be affected.

Lets not forget about school. Now a days kids NEED internet to complete projects, research, check grades. And businesses have all billing online now. There are certain things we NEED the internet for. Taxes, healthcare, directions, just information in general.

The scariest part to me is that the Internet is completely tied to me being able to do my college courses due to most homework and assignments being submitted online so if there's the decision to strangle internet to all the college campuses and websites there's the possibility that all college kids are going to have to spend crazy amounts of money just to do their work and keep up with the learning they're already paying a crazy amount of money for to start with

Heres to MCTV in NE ohio. My bill randomly dropped by $5 a few months ago and my speed was doubled. When i called to pay my bill they notified me of the change. I love this local company.

Telecommunications Act of 1996 permitted the consolidation of cable and media companies. Before that law passed, we had locally owned and operated TV stations and over 50 major telecomms companies, today; we have 6 major telecomms companies.
