This is 2nd leg of Ran-day's journey south, heading from Manchester-by-the-Sea towards the Cape Cod Canal and ending in Westport, Massachusetts. A big issue with this trip is about timing the tides in the Cape Cod Canal correctly. We have an early 2:30AM morning start to get to our target on time to avoid currents that would really hamper the trip.

Ran-day, I really like how you teach us old sailors by revisiting simple things we tend to forget and new update ways on pdf charts. That was extremely informative. Being old school, paper charts is a must have. Saying that, I do like the idea of electronic charts. One more thing, I like how you explain to us in simple terms. Thank you for sharing. Never new about MRASS before. We have something similar in aviation to turn on runway lights for non-towered airports. Click 3 times for low intensity, 5 times for med, and 7 for high.

This was a perfect example of the flexibility ketch rigs offer. Running a mizzen and roller furling head sail gives you the ability to quickly and easily fine tune the boat's speed and balance in blustery conditions. Captain Q has rightly pointed out the significance and benefit of this design - something that is not typically appreciated by people who only have sloop experience. Experienced sailors understand the importance/value of a design that makes shorthanded sail adjustments quick, easy, and effective. In the real world, wind direction and intensity is constantly changing. Being able to adapt quickly with precision and with minimal effort is of paramount importance to the short handed sailor. Randy's boat is designed well with that in mind.

Loved watching your boat moving thru the water under sail! I experienced 10 consecutive sunrises and sunsets under sail last month while just two of us bareboat chartered a 41’ sloop from Grenada to Antigua and back to Grenada nonstop for 665 nm!(I will never afford my own boat so yes, I’m a “credit card captain” and damn proud of my sailing accomplishments thus far!) Sailing is truly living! Love watching you and Captain Q! Plz don’t stop!

Nice video. I'm an old diesel mechanic and in my opinion, those old Fords are great, low tech, which I think is a huge positive, and very reliable if you look after them. Another plus is that you can get spares for them just about anywhere you go. The boat's looking great; thanks for the upload Randy.

I am pleased you had a very enjoyable passage. As you described a sensible location for access to your boat. Your videography of the trip was very good. I remember paper charts. Our chart drawer on the bridge was stuffed full for the east coast. I think then the cost was ten maybe fifteen dollars per chart. 👍🏝⛵️Captain Q and friend appeared to really enjoy the trip. Really enjoyed this video! Yes there are magical movements. One for me was on a crossing from Antigua to the Med, in the middle of the ocean in the middle of the night, being overtaken to starboard by the Americas Cup J Class Endeavour. Sails were lite. I looked on the AIS and sure enough it was her. And for some time watched as she slipped away into the night.

Randy...as a new boat owner myself, I can say I agree with everything you say. I struggle fixing things, and doing boat yoga, but it nothing to the sight of a sunset/sunrise/moon rise/milky way in the sky while out at sail. I am daily thankful that I can experience this, I am just mad at myself for not doing this 30-40 years ago.

Yeah we would be coming out with that on the nose… thankfully it cooperated that day… I did have some good and accurate wind forecasts (minus the small craft advisory which wasn’t issued until 4am or so)

3:36 Nigel Calders's book on charts is a must for anyone who actually wants to learn about charts and proper navigation. "How to Read a Nautical Chart". And anyone who doesn't keep paper charts on board is a fool. Because your GPS WILL go down, at some point.

I was at Tripp's marina for a couple of years. I loved it and the beach. Lots of ticks, however.

I should clarify. Tripp's is on the edge of a large area of pristine coastal dunes. The ticks are there. Take a walk sometime when your boat isn't taking on water.

The canal trip reminds of my one and only East river trip, we hit 14knts SOG at one point on a Swan 46. I use on phone Memory Map as personal plotter as you can download NOAA charts at $10 for the year. I had most the east coast lots of Florida and the great lakes on my old phone. I prefer Memory Map as it is NOAA charts as opposed to the Navionics version.

I took my grandfathers boat through the cannal before I was a little kid but I do remember how to current just ripped in that area it was like going down a river

Great video -- setting out at night, at the helm with the crew sleeping (stars!), sunrise, calculating the canal (I did not know there was a difference in the magnitude E-W!), sailing instead of motoring, triggered some fond memories! Buzzard's Bay can be.. a thrill, depending on the wind and waves. Walter Schultz gave you some great tips... did you do the work he recommended? Also, from a former ketch owner, your mizzen looks just a bit raked aft compared to your main, no? Otherwise looks wonderful.
