And or people were so close to death they couldn't acknowledge you. The Horse in the song doesn't even want to continue.
This version originated with American folksinger Jean Ritchie, who was about to sue Bob Dylan for cribbing it's melody and chords for his "Masters Of War," but Dylan's management quickly settled with her for $1000 USD -- a fairly grand sum back in the 1960s. FWIW, I've been playing it since long before Andrew and Emily were born. 😎
