I was in an abusive relationship for nearly 20 years. I wasn't allowed to watch my Cubs during that time, and 2016 was the year I was finally divorced and able to watch my first full season since marrying in 96. To watch my Cubs go all the way was the cherry on top. I can't tell you how therapeutic this series was, especially after being told for so many years that my love of baseball was not *feminine* enough. Thank you for this. You guys are golden. 💙🧡

Cubs fans here. Y'all skipped too far into the 10th, missing the two (2) key WS winning rally starting plays. Swarbs leads of the inning with a shift beating single. For his efforts, he is lifted for pinch-running Almora, who very wisely takes second on a deep fly ball out by Bryant. This removes the double play possibilty and allows Cleveland to walk Rizzo. The rest is history.

That’s exactly what I was thinking!! Also something that often gets glossed over is why Michael Martinez was up to bat. Since Heyward made it to third, Terry Francona didn’t want to risk Coco Crisps weak arm so he put in Martinez. Go Cubs!

I watched this game on the scoreboard screen in the stadium of the Cubs' AAA affiliate in Des Moines, Iowa. I was on short term disability while recovering from a stroke and my wife had just left me. But I was at Principal Park (Sec Taylor stadium to us old timers) with some great friends who were nominal baseball fans at best but had jumped on the Cubbies' band wagon. It was a magical night where 'troubles melted like lemon drops away above the chimney tops.' I've returned to that night hundreds of times in my head since then. For one amazing evening all was right with the world.

@allen5448
@allen5448 4 года назад
cyberpimp29 But you’re going to tell me that being down 3-1 in the WS then making it go to game 7 and in that game 7 a blown call from the Ump led to ross error that drives in 2 runs. Rajai Davis hitting the tying homerun and this leading to extra innings, on top of that both teams had a curse on that game 7: Cubs with 108 years drought of winning a championship (Most In the NL and arguably American sports history). Indians with a 68 year drought (most in the AL). Don’t get me wrong 2011 series was one of the most dramatic series ever witnessed but it doesn’t compare to the 2016 one. This comes from a White Sox Fan.

When this happened, I’m covered in sweat, I couldn’t eat the whole game, I’m sick to my stomach. You have Fowler hitting a leadoff HR. You have the early hook on Hendricks. You have the Ross error after Lester comes in. Then you have the Ross HR off of Miller who was lights out most of the season. The Davis HR. And all of this after going down 3-1? I was at game 4 and the ride home on the Red line was complete silence. Seemed like the kids had to be down 3-1 before they realized there was nothing left to lose, just go play. There is a video somewhere on youtube called “The Rebuild”, basically covering every move the Cubs made from the moment they signed Theo, when they had lost 100 games, and that train just kept chuggin. The team was ready by the second half of 2015. Whats a shame is how quietly that young team went in the next three seasons. Everything has to come together though. The Cubs have struggled to keep their pitching staff in order.
@cyberpimp29
@cyberpimp29 4 года назад
The team Theo built in 2016 was quite old - especially as you noted, the pitching staff. Thats why it was one and done. As a Cardinals fan, though, I still have to hand it to Theo. Breaking the 'curse' was a monumental task...

You nailed it. The fall and redemption of David Ross in this game is epic. Final game of his career, didn’t even start. Maddon said he wouldn’t put Lester into a dirty inning, then just did it anyway. Rossy wasn’t warm and ready to play then took a dirt ball to the face, fell on his ass and not 1 but 2 runners come around the bases to score. He’s absolutely flustered. Comes up to bat against arguably the best set up man in MLB those couple of years in Andrew Miller. Absolute beast. Ross sees him shake off on a 2 strike count and knew what he wanted to pitch and smacks that homer. Final at bat of his career. Incredible narrative right there.

That game has to be a top 5 World Series games. Everything you mentioned and so much drama. The Cubs being down 3 to 1 in the series. Almora pitch running and tags up. It was literally one of the best overall series in History. Yes I am a Cubs fan and Yes i may be biased but I've seen some world series in my days and there is nothing like a game 7. And then to have it be tied in the 8th. Going into extras, rain delays, two teams who had big droughts. The agony the celebration it really had it all. And even the fact that the Indians came back to score 1 run with 2 outs and looked like they were going to steal 2nd and try and squeak in another run but luckily for us Cubs fans that didnt happen.

Around the 8th inning my brother and I were atop the stairs listening to the game, I personally never saw the Raji Davis homerun I only heard it and moms reaction, I asked did the Cubs just hit a homer and found we tied it. Came down and watched the 9th, but then with the rain delay we had to go bed, by this time it was about midnight. I remember hearing the Cubs winning the series atop the steps, I was super upset, it was the first time in my life I actually saw my team lose a big opportunity like that. The SB Nation video on this game has an interesting bit about how the only reason Martinez had to bat was because they needed his arm in RF (and Guyer's in LF as opposed to Crisp's) in the 9th, which they only needed because Fowler got to third on a throwing error when he stole second. The Cubs didn't end up scoring in the 9th, but Martinez being put in as a DR ended up costing them the game in a way.

Remember, Martinez came in as a defensive replacement for his arm in the place of a red hot coco crisp. Imagine if it's Crisp up to the plate there... could be a different history book moment.

Skipped the most important part of the game: Almora's tag-up from FIRST in the 10th...nobody would've done that and it arguably won the game and the season

Yes. And really it's actually kind of a right prediction if you factor in no World Series in '94 because of the strike. So it just got pushed back a year.

Craziest part of this game was a tweet back in 2014, predicting Cubs vs Indians in the 2016 WS and the game would go into extras in game 7 and the world would end with the score tied. Then the rain delay made even more eerie hahah i remember it like yesterday

Huge Cubs fan here. They skipped over the 9th inning but did any of you say Shit we lost when Kipnis hits that foul ball in the 9th. Omg when he hit that I thought it was a HR for sure and everytime i see it. It brings dread in my mind.

As exciting as the Game 7 itself is, you also have to take into account how it got there as well. Chicago found themselves on the short end of a 3-1 series lead after game 4.

As an Indians fan, this may have been the cruelest hate by the baseball gods. 95 was on Hargrove resting the team all September and the big hitters were flat by the WS. '97 was a close series and the Tribe was trying to come from behind then blew the clinching lead. '16 was the soulkiller. The Tribe had a 3-1 lead in games, and we know the history of the Tribe blowing 3-1 leads. Then Francona just kept trying to force the issue with Kluber. It all backfired and the Tribe were getting crushed and by the 8th inning, the hope is gone. When Rajai hit that homerun, it was like "ah, I see what the baseball gods are doing, they want to drain every ounce of curse out and then the Tribe finally wins." Hope was born and every Tribe fan felt a corner was turned. W forgot the gods were cruel to us. That rain delay seemed to kill the momentum, and it went back to the Cubs. Every Tribe fan believes had that rain delay not come, we would have won the Series. I don't know. It happened. This series is when I began to lose faith in Francona, because I felt he mishandled so much, especially after getting up 3-1.

Speaking of the Cubs, you should react to the David Bote walk off grand slam vs the Nats (8/12/2018). That's a fun one.

I wish you guys had commented on the bottom of the ninth, in which Madden inexplicably leaves Chapman in, but Chapman uses his slider to somehow get three outs. He had been working on his slider in the NLCS after the Montero grand slam gave the Cubs a big cushion.

This series right here was so important because I feel it just kicked off a later decade of so many legacies of failure being erased, from my Nats and the Astros in baseball, the Eagles and the Chiefs/Andy Reid in football, the Raptors in Basketball, and the Blues and my fucking Capitals in hockey, all started here.

David Ross has later said that he hadn't caught Chapman much and wasn't comfortable calling anything but the fastball; his thought essentially being "he throws 100 mph, I can't call for a slider and that be the reason we lose"
