I write this so often on a Bon Scott performance with AC/DC. I grew up in Melbourne and as a teenager in the mid 70’s saw them so often live with Bon. We all knew that they were something special even then. I have never wanted to see them live since he died and have never bought an album since. He will always be their front man to me, and always with that naughty twinkle in his eye. My 15yr old friends and I never went backstage, we just knew that he was a wild one but also a great guy. Broke my heart when he died. He is and will always be a legend in this country.

@@hockeyrules160 The statue is in Western Australia, in Fremantle where he grew up and is buried. I mean no disrespect to Brian, but he just isn’t their front man to me, and it will always be Bon. And he was a devil with the ladies, which is why my young friends and I never tried to go backstage. We were middle class little girls who dressed a little provocatively for a show but we never did anything and our parents wouldn’t have let us out of the house if we looked like hookers 😂. The guys at the gigs were always respectful and well behaved and we never had any trouble. My ears used to ring for days though, it was the best time!

@@wildwillie5408 Believe me, he had charisma dripping off him, which was another reason he had girls falling all over him. 100% agree! Bon Scott was everything a lead singer should be, in a band of that era. Brian brought vocals, and drew attention. But Bon brought those plus raw sex appeal (despite the fact that he was actually kind of gross, unwashed and unhygienic! AS a teen I thought he was the sexiest man ever! LOL! ) danger and godly rock appeal. No contest really!

Agreed. There's nothing wrong with the later performances, but for a true perspective of the song at the time it was written, it's much better to listen to either the studio version, or at least a live version that's close to when it was first performed. I saw them in 1979 on this Highway to Hell tour not but several months before Bon Scott died. Saw them in a smaller arena, slightly smaller than this one, and it still is one of the best live rock shows I've ever seen, and believe me I went to to a whole bunch. Just amazing. And at some point this one heavyset bouncer looking guy put Angus Young on his shoulders and literally walked him up and down every stair in that arena through every section. He came right by me and I got his stinging sweat in my eyes from him flipping his head around while he rocked out, and I could see how beat up and battle-scarred his guitar was and all the worn decals and scratches on the back of it. His solo went on for easily 15 minutes. And meanwhile the band was just rocking so hard down on the stage and Bon Scott was always having the audience right in the palm of his hand. He just had that energy coupled with a sense of humor.

Thank you for your reaction. It is interesting to watch your two reviews of this song, from performances 30 years apart, and with two different singers. Prior to AC/DC, Bon Scott was in a progressive, folk, & blues band called Fraternity. In those days he was something of a hippie poet, and a prolific letter writer while on tour. Consequently, he had the ability to rhyme without losing the message. His tongue-in-cheek lyrics became a signature feature of AC/DC songs. My point is that I think his vocal performance was perhaps enhanced because he was singing his own carefully crafted (and heartfelt) words.

Bon loved Johnson as a singer and when Bon died, his parents urged the band to go on. Bon died feb 19th and Johnson was officially in the group on April 1st to finish the album the band just started a few week before Bon's death.

Bon Scott is THE singer of AC/DC!

Bons singing facial expressions were in part to keep some of his false teeth from falling out. He was great! Got to see him in concert before he died. What a future he had ahead lost.

Bon Scott has the advantage of authenticity. Highway to Hell is about the band’s early days in Australia, touring, with long distances on the highway, often to hell-hole towns. Bon Scott lived it. He feels it, and we hear that reality in his voice. Authenticity. And I remember back in the days before AC/DC became internationally famous, blasting AC/DC on my car stereo on long drives down highways in Queensland in tropical heat that created mirages on the road. We could relate to that song.

I love your reactions, your insightful analysis and knowledge are both first rate. I was just a kid, here in Australia, when these guys were playing the pubs and clubs, before they got really huge. I even had a Rotty x named Bon and like the man himself, that dog was brilliant and I remember being heart broken when I heard Bo Scott had died. The band however didn't fold and in true Aussie fighting fashion, they came back bigger and better than ever. Rock in peace Bon Scott, both of you.

Bon had huge charisma... just an awesome performer. He was a huge loss but Brian has been superb.

Hey thanks for playing this. I wish reactors would play all songs originally sung by Bon Scott with Bon Scott performing. Another thing that I wish reactors would pay attention to is when the song was released. If it’s a 40 year old song please play studio versions or live performances from 35-40 years ago when the band was in their prime with their original members. I saw a reaction today of a 44 year old REO Speedwagon song that was recorded live just in the last few years. I believe that there is only 2, maybe 3, original members in the band now. It just does a disservice to the band and the listeners. I really enjoy your reactions.

When Bon Scott's earlier band Fraternity were touring the UK they shared the bill with a band called Geordie whose singer was Brian Johnson. Truth stranger than fiction.

I saw AC/DC live in '79, in Nuremberg, (West) Germany, while serving overseas in the US Army Infantry. It was an open-air concert that started at 10am, first with local bands, then later in the day with Cheap Trick, Molly Hatchet, Scorpions and AC/DC, the headline group was The Who, who finished out the concert with a laser show. And it all it took place in the same stadium where Hitler and the Nazi's held their rallies.

Its just so unbelievable to think Angus still jumps around on the stage like this lol. I saw ACDC live with Bon when they were just a pub band.
