I haven't read the book but from what I've gathered and I think had been confirmed by the director, the events really happened but the movie is a satire, so it is making a commentary on society. The fact that everyone is so clueless and self consumed, Patrick is able to openly kill people and no is the wiser.

I would say it isn't even that people are clueless, it's also got some class warfare in there; rich wall street pricks covering for one another because rich people protect other rich people. Or like, the realtor just cleaned up the closet with dead bodies and put the apartment back on the market because it's more profitable to do that than to have to deal with the cops. (Like how companies use child labor and irresponsibly allow thousands of workers to die because it's good for business, because the fine is a drop in the bucket for them.)

In the book, it’s ambiguous, so it makes sense that the movie ends with ambiguity. I find it odd that Mary Harron didn’t intend for the ambiguity in the film when it was literally there in the novel. That said, I think that her choice of which possibility is true, is the better choice in serving the satire/messaging of the whole thing.

The book is infinitely darker. Hollywood would only allow it to be turned into a movie if the tone was lightened and made more comedic.

As it is established multiple times throughout the movie, nobody can accurately recognise anyone else, because they are all so alike, so no one's testimony or alibi is credible, because nobody ever knows who everyone else is.

This movie is so goddamn hilarious 1 - "We should do it, we should get married." "I can't take the time off work." 2 - "You're compliment was sufficient, Lewis" 3 - "Oh jeez Patrick - I mean, Marcus" 4 - "No Lewis, it's not me, you're mistaken" 5 - "Don't touch the watch" 6 - Of course, the ICONIC "I have to go return some video tapes"

There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who look at Christian Bale and think of Batman, and those who look at Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne and think of Patrick Bateman.
@Hereticked

A lot of people fall into the trap of being overly literal in their analysis and focusing on the "did he really do the murders or not?" stuff, and that completely misses the point of the film. A movie like this demands engagement with themes and the metaphorical. Whether he really killed all those people, imagined the murders, or it was some combination of reality and fantasy by an unreliable narrator is secondary to the point of being meaningless. The point that the film is driving at is everyone around him in this hedonistic, capitalist, Wall Street shithole is more or less just like him. They're all fail sons awash in greed, excess, fake jobs and basically doing nothing but going to useless meetings and eating at overpriced restaurants. Patrick Bateman and Paul Allen keep getting mistaken for other people because they're all the same empty vessel. And even the people who aren't psychopathic killers like Patrick are oblivious or indifferent to his murders because they're focused on the mundane, shallow, spiritually dead pursuits that make up modern consumer culture. This is the core of being an "American Psycho." There is no punishment or catharsis for Bateman (he will never be caught) because the society in which he lives is built upon letting wealthy psychopaths get away with their crimes. He is trapped in this cycle of insecurity, misanthropy, violence and self-loathing.

Fun fact: In the novel, the "don't touch the watch" quote is actually, "don't touch the Rolex". However, they weren't able to use that line as Rolex did not want to be associated with a psycho like Patrick Bateman
@treetopjones737
@treetopjones737 9 месяцев назад
In the American Psycho novel, the Paul Allen character's name is Paul Owen, and that's too random and specific of a detail to change without there being a reason. Paul Owen could exist in the movie version, and as the surnames are so similar, Paul Allen could often be confused with Paul Owen, and that might be exactly what Bateman did. It's possible that Patrick killed Paul Owen thinking it was Paul Allen. That's why nobody believes Patrick's confession, as Paul Allen is still alive, and everybody is too self-obsessed to notice Paul Owen is missing or even notice his existence.

Patrick did indeed kill Paul Allen, but throughout the movie, people frequently forget each others names/faces. None of them take the time to truly know one another, Bateman can't cope with being just another forgotten face and realizes how vapid his existence and career really is
@andychow5509
@andychow5509 8 месяцев назад
Exactly. Paul Allen's family hired the private detective, and they also cleaned up his apartment and had is sold quietly without advertising it in the news. Everyone is ultra selfish and only care about themselves, they don't notice obvious things. In the book, Dorcia's (the restaurant) chef and co-owner was in the same frat house in university, and good friends. His brother gets a reservation at Dorcia, and when Patrick asks him how he pulled it off, he's shocked Patrick didn't know. All along Patrick could have had unlimited reservations if he only had wondered who the chef was or kept up with his old friend. Everyone talks about the restaurant, no one about the chef. It's one of the details showing how superficial everything is.

Fun fact about Willem Defoe’s scenes when he’s interviewing Bateman, it was done in three takes, the first where his character ABSOLUTELY knew that Bateman killed Allen, the second where he was suspicious of Bateman killing Allen, and a third where he wasn’t sure if Bateman killed Allen, and they were all inter-spliced with each other to throw off the viewer and reiterate how much of an unreliable narrator Bateman is.

This isnone of those films that takes a couple viewings to follow everything. In the directors commentary she says it wasnt her intention to make it seem like everything was in his head. The point about how everyone mistakes everyone for someone else is to show how superficial everyone is. That everyone is following the same trends, haircuts, glasses etc.. so everybody looks like everyone else and since nobody cares they easily mistake Patrick for Halberstram etc.. and Halberstam for Paul Allen in London etc..

There are those sureal psychosis scenes like the ones with the cat and the ATM, the cops and all, some murders are real, other are not. All the characters keep mistaken them for each others, his lawyer is mistaken Bateman with Allen, Allen thinks Bateman is Halberstram etc. In the book the author emphasizes this a lot, they all have the same cards, the same outfits from the same brands, they all eat in the same overhyped restaurants, etc. This shows how the characters are totally interchangeable, with no real personnality. The main point is : Bateman wants to get caught to be redeemed. He desperately needs this redemption because this is the only thing that can save him, as he has absolutely no control over his mental illness and behavior. He keeps telling other characters that he kill people, but no one ever listen, no one cares, because they are all shallow, egotistical and only concerned by themselves. My confession meant nothing". Bateman can't be redeemed and this is his tragedy. If you liked the movie, read the book. It's way more deep and even more satyrical than the movie. It's hilarious too. Also "Glamorama" from the same author, which takes place in the early 90's fashion scene is a great, fascinating novel.

@@yasminareacts I'm not a big fan of Batman, but for some reason I love Batman '89; it's a top 10 all-timer for me. And I say I'm not a big Batman fan... but man, there's a LOT of great Batman media out there. The Animated Series is in the conversation for best cartoon of all-time... and I definitely recommend Batman '66. I didn't like the show, but the movie is the dumbest, stupidest movie ever; I love it. I don't want to color how you feel about the movies but I do want to say that you'll probably hear that the 3rd movie, Batman Forever, is bad. I think that's a misrepresentation. While I don't think it's good, the worst thing a movie can be isn't bad, it's boring, and Batman Forever isn't boring. It's weird, and maybe more than a bit of a mess, but I appreciate a lot of what it's trying to do, even if it doesn't really come together to form a good movie. Also, the soundtrack fucking *slaps*.
