Yeah I don’t think people forget, it’s just that even though I love the movies. They didn’t do a good job of showcasing Peeta as a character at all, like they took away 80% of his personality and strengths, especially in the first one so that’s why people tone tend to understand him as much movie wise. People have been calling Peeta weak and useless for a long time, and it’s mainly because of the movies because they don’t really show how smart he is, I think catching fire does a better job than the first one but again with them taking out Peeta’s disability of losimg a leg, he seems weaker at points in this movie as well. Although I do love Josh as Peeta, I think he kills it. I think it’s just some of the directing decisions that kind of undermine his strengths and importance. I even saw a reactor saying that Peeta is so bad at acting and talking and that he should leave it to katniss, because he’s dropping the ball which shows a lot because the whole point is that that’s what Peeta is good at.

I think it's sadly the patriarchy and I don't use that term often. Those that hate on Peeta probably do because he has the strengths usually assigned to women. He is caring, smart (interpersonally), sweet, loyal, and although he is physically strong he doesn't need to show it. He unlike Gail just loves Katniss and wants her to be happy. He doesn't want war because he knows war costs lives, very few years end with no casualties. Everything he does is calculated but not for his own gain and not out of hate but out of what is right. Gale as it says is running on punishing those who hurt him and Peeta (maybe because he was raised in a better class) just wants to do what is right and best. He wants to protect Hamish and Katniss and he knows he has to volunteer to do that so he does. Yes it means he might die but it's worth it to protect his new family. I know it would be repetitive but I would love to see the events of the hunger games book from Peeta's perspective. I would also love to hear the thoughts of snow about Peeta. Because I would think after reading the ballot of songbirds and snakes he would either sympathize or hate him for reminding him of his past.

Fun fact: Collecting the bodies in the arena was added some time before Katniss was ever in the games and she says in the books that they started doing that because one year a tribute cannibalized another tribute and the Capitol didn’t like it.

This is one of my favorite movies, but it still makes me so mad that they left out all of Haymitch's backstory. He was in the 50th Hunger Games, the second Quarter Quell, and the rule for that Quell was that double the amount of tributes would be reaped, so there were 48 tributes. In his games, the arena was surrounded by a cliff, and to prevent tributes from killing themselves the gamemakers made it so that anything that fell down the cliff would bounce back up to the spot it came from. Haymitch discovered that after accidentally knocking a rock off the cliff. In the finale, it was him against one of the district 1 females, and she was winning. He had managed to stab her a few times and destroyed one of her eyes with his knife but she had sliced his stomach open with an ax. The books say that "he was struggling to hold in his insides." When he realized that he couldn't win, he got an idea and started running towards the edge of the arena. The female pursued him but by the time they got there they were both exhausted. Haymitch collapsed to his knees by the cliff while facing her, and since she was too exhausted to walk any more and had lost too much blood she threw her ax at him as a last-ditch effort to land a killing blow. Haymitch fell out of the way just in time after she threw it and the ax fell down the cliff. Haymitch was "convulsing on the ground" and minutes away from death, and the female tribute was just waiting for him to finally die because "she knew she could outlast him." Then the ax bounced back from the bottom of the cliff because of the suicide prevention and "buried itself into her head." Haymitch wins! And as a reward for "using the arena in an unintended manor and making the gamemakers look foolish," Snow had his parents, siblings, and girlfriend murdered. Kinda makes sense now why he's a drunk and has so much sympathy for Katniss, huh? Especially considering she showed up the gamemakers in a much more damning way. The one thing stopping Snow from doing the same to her family is the fact that it would 1000% instantly start the rebellion if he did.

The film is already almost 2 and a half hours. Adding anything would require taking something else out. Adaptation is a really tough job - but it's _so_ much harder when it's a first-person story. In first-person, the protagonist can take an aside to explain something to the reader. No can do in a film - something that the book could do with a single paragraph could take a film an entire 5-8 minute scene, and even then it'd be tough to do without upsetting the flow of the film. There's a _lot_ of details they had to take out to make the film fit into one part. I'd say they did a pretty good job of prioritizing what needed to be included most.

The three finger salute is described better in the books. It’s a sign of respect and honor in farewell, usually used at funerals. As the uprisings begin, it’s used as a symbol of rebellion, after Katniss used it after giving Rue a sort of flower burial, which is also viewed as a rebellious act as you aren’t supposed to mourn fellow tributes. It makes them too human. So it starts as a respectful farewell, and becomes a symbol of revolution.
@reductosmash2483
@reductosmash2483 Год назад
Well...yeah...but it's never used as a "sign of rebellion," it's just becomes associated with the rebellion, but its original meaning is never changed. Yes, it conveys respect, honor, and admiration, but it also conveys unity and solidarity. That's why it's used at funerals: respect, honor, and admiration for the dead, unity and solidarity with the grieving family. It's used heavily during the rebellion as a sign of unity and solidarity amongst the districts and respect and admiration for everyone willing to lay down their lives for the cause.
@missjenna6449
@missjenna6449 Год назад
@@reductosmash2483 Yes, that’s…why it’s a sign of the rebellion. The symbol is used solely by those involved in the uprising, inspired by moments Snow considered rebellious - a volunteer from District 12 was dangerous for him, treating Rue as a friend in the arena was dangerous for him. The man who is shot in District Eleven isn’t shot for using the symbol as a farewell. Something can become a symbol and still retain its original meaning.
@reductosmash2483
@reductosmash2483 Год назад
@@missjenna6449 No, it's a sign of unity and cohesion amongst the districts. The salute is just used to keep the unity between the districts strong throughout the rebellion. But it's never a "sign of rebellion," just a sign of solidarity. High-fiving is a sign of being excited. If you are playing a game with a teammate and you high-five because you did something good, does that mean that the meaning of high-fiving gets changed to "a sign of playing a game." No, it's still just a "sign of excitement," it's just temporarily being applied to the situation of a game.

@jennacantrill3486 10 месяцев назад
@@reductosmash2483 Super late replying to this because it got hidden in my spam folder, but: have you read the books? This isn't a symbol of unity of the districts, because it's a symbol originally solely used in District 12 for funerals. The Districts don't have enough communication with each other to have a unified symbol. The first time anyone outside 12 saw it was when Katniss volunteered, and the second was when Katniss mourned Rue, which she wasn't supposed to do. That's what the other Districts associate the symbol with, Katniss rebelling against the Capitol and mourning another tribute. The only unity it shows is the unity against the Capitol - making it a symbol of rebellion. Which is why the man in 11 was shot.

Off-topic for most of the video, but I've found that "what's your favorite color" conversations can be so incredibly impactful if you really care about each other's answers, especially if you have nuanced ones. My boyfriend doesn't have just one, he's a fan of earth tones and foresty greens which says so much more about him than an answer like "blue." Meanwhile, I have a very specific favorite color: Deep sea green. I think that's why the one in this movie is so sweet, because Peeta has a specific kind of orange that he likes and he has a reason for it. It takes a little talk that most people don't take seriously and makes it into a genuine attempt to acknowledge each other

The woman who sacrificed herself for Peeta was one of the morphing. After her games she and her district partner were hooked on morphine. They loved Perta because he would talk to them during training and he drew them pictures. The male morphing died at the cornucopia at the beginning but the female gave her life for Peeta. I think she did it partly for the rebellion but mainly because he was so kind to them when everyone else pretty much dismissed them. X

The three fingers sign is something people from district 12 do as a sign of respect at funerals for those who have passed. That is why Katniss did it as she was walking away from where Rue’s body was. When it was broadcast it became associated with katniss. I think people also do it at the second movie’s reaping both as a sign of respect for Katniss as it is now associated with her and also as it’s original meaning (a sign of respect for the dead) since people assume either her and/or Peeta will die these games
@reductosmash2483
@reductosmash2483 Год назад
Although it was definitely used at funerals, its meaning isn't really directly associated with funerals, death, or dead people, and its meaning never changes. It's a sign of general solidarity, unity, admiration, and respect, long before Katniss volunteers. 12 salutes her after she volunteers for Prim as a way of saying "we thank you and admire you and respect you and love you for this beautiful act and we're with you and we're proud to call you one of our own and good luck." They weren't implying that she's 100% definitely about to die, they were just conveying their respect for her. It's frequently used at funerals because it has two dual meanings: respect and admiration directed towards the dead, and solidarity and unity directed towards the grieving family. So Katniss giving the salute in the first games wasn't just to honor Rue but to say to the citizens of 11 "I'm sorry for your loss, we're all experiencing this pain as one, and I'm with you" as a display of unity.

A few responses/explanations to some of the things you say/ask about: 5:25 -- Remember, they're both only 16, so moving in together might be seen as a little too soon in any scenario. 7:22 -- The three fingers to the lips then holding them up is a sign of solidarity in Districts 11 and 12. Everyone in 12 gave it to her after she volunteered for Prim, and Katniss gave it to the citizens of District 11 after Rue's death, which led to the riots. After that, the Capitol (albeit, understandably) saw it as a sign of rebellion. 7:28 -- Don't you dare apologize for crying. I'm a grown ass man AND I knew it was coming because I read all the books and watched as many trailers as possible before the movies came out (this scene is heavily featured in both the teaser and the official trailer) and I still bawled my little eyes out. 8:05 -- She gotta just keep reading or else Snow will instantly retaliate against her and/or Peeta and/or her family and/or his family. 9:29 -- Everything about the Capitol (even the names: Coriolanus, Plutarch, Cinna, Flavius, Octavia, and in future movies Cressida, Castor, Pollux, etc.) is modeled after ancient Rome, and Roman elite regularly threw up at lavish events to try as much food as possible. It is described in texts as "sticking feathers down your throat" but it's debated whether they actually stuck feathers down their throat to throw up or if that was just an expression. 10:15 -- The blood backwash will be explained in the next movie. Remember that when you watch it, because a lot of people don't make the connection. I've had to explain it to a lot of friends. 15:46 -- Finnick real cute. So cute that Snow wanted to prostitute him to Capitol elite after he won his games. He refused because he was happily dating his girlfriend, Annie. In retaliation, Snow rigged the reaping so that his girlfriend would be chosen. In a crazy twist she ended up winning because the finale was the gamemakers flooding the arena and just seeing who could last the longest before drowning. Since she is from District 4, the fishing district, she was the best swimmer and won, but the whole experience of the games and watching the remaining tributes slowly drown in front of her and her very nearly drowning herself made her have a bit of a psychotic break, which Katniss comments on when talking to Johanna after the birds scene. Annie is the one Mags volunteered for, and you can see how much intense PTSD she has when her name is called and she instantly starts to fall apart before Mags volunteers. 16:48 -- During filming, they actually filmed in a hotel and forgot to block off the elevator from stopping at any floor other than the one they wanted to go to, so the elevator ended up stopping and the actress who plays Johanna was totally nude in front of innocent hotel guests waiting for the elevator lol 21:01 -- In the movies, they just make it that everyone can swim, but in the books they mention that over half of the tributes are still stuck on their platforms by the time Katniss, Peeta, Finnick, and Mags leave because so many of them don't know how to swim. Peeta couldn't swim either in the books. Katniss knows how because her dad taught her while in the woods in between hunting lessons and Finnick and Mags are from the fishing district. 21:30 -- Probably snapped his neck? Idk, that doesn't happen in the books. Peeta only ever kills one tribute in both of his games, and it's Brutus (the bald District 2 male) right before Katniss blows up the arena. They never mention it in the movies, but in the books Brutus kills Chaff (the District 11 male that kisses Katniss after the tribute parade) while the whole endgame is going on, and later after hearing the cannon and seeing Brutus covered in blood, Peeta thinks he killed Katniss and goes ham on him. 22:09 -- She could see it because of the "shimmering" that Beetee points out during training. In the books, when Katniss destroys the pyramid of supplies in her first games, the explosion destroys one of her eardrums and has to be reconstructed. She's afraid that the gamemakers will remove the visual cue if she points it out, so she lies and says that her reconstructed ear could hear the force field. Also, in the books, the blood infection that Peeta gets in his leg during the first games doesn't heal quite right even with the medicine Katniss gets for him and leads to him needing to have it amputated and replaced with an artificial one after they win. The movies remove the lasting injuries that the Victors have to deal with after the games. 23:12 -- Yeah, trees have "veins" of basically pure water throughout their trucks and spiles can tap into them. You'd normally have to carve part of the tree out so that you could get straight to the "veins" without the bark clogging the spile, but this is advanced Capitol technology so... 24:20 -- In the books, they point out that they breathe in some of the fog and have to gargle with water and snort water because the poison boil things had formed in their mouths, throats, and sinuses. **shutters** 25:27 -- They always do that. They just don't show it in the first movie. But, interestingly, collecting the bodies started just a few years before Katniss's first games (74th games). If I'm remembering correctly, sometime between Finnick's games (65th games) and Annie's games (70th games), one of the tributes began cannibalizing the bodies of dead tributes and the capitol audience was so disgusted by it that the gamemakers started removing the bodies after a tribute died from then on. Which contributed to Annie's psychotic break, because after she was the last tribute remaining in her games, they waited until the runner-up's body had been collected before draining the arena and declaring her the victor and the draining process took a long time too because it was an entire arena that was draining, all the while she was desperately trying not to drown after hours of fighting to keep her head above water. Yes, it took HOURS for the rest of the tributes to finally drown, and when I say flooded I mean FLOODED. The arena was so flooded that the tributes couldn't even climb trees because literally everything was completely submerged. 28:29 -- They have a much better and less sus cover story for splitting them up in the books. They need to split them up so that Johanna can get Katniss's tracker out, and in the books, like I said, Peeta has an artificial leg and reduced mobility, so they say that Katniss and Johanna are the fastest ones and the wire needs to be taken to the water quickly. Hope you enjoy!

I've been so excited to see this :) The movie series didn't give enough time to Johanna and her story, the books tell a bit more and you can infer some things if you rewatch it after finishing the series.. but, Jena Malone did incredible playing her.

The reason why district 11 is majority black is because the districts have been separated for so long, they aren't allowed to travel between districts, so everyone in one district looks so similar, district 12 tends to have people with black hair and grey eyes

When you watch Mockingjay Part 1, pay *real* close attention to the scene that starts with Finnick saying “President Snow used to …”; read between the lines with that, (slight spoiler) even if the camera is looking at Beetee and President Coin.

I think the reason the peacekeeper didn't recognize Katniss is that she is supposed to be way dirtier back in twelve than when she had been prepped for the cameras and public, he was also probably just blinded by rage and didn't care who he hurt even if they were capitol darlings. Please correct me if you know otherwise, this is just my theory from what I remember of the books :)

21:03 Fun fact: besides the people in District 4 (the fishing district), most people in the districts can’t swim. The Capitol’s not maintaining public pools for them (except maybe in the training centers in 1 and 2). Katniss only knows how because there’s a lake outside of District 12 that almost no one knows about, and when she was little her dad took her there and taught her.

Effie has to be my favorite character because of how much she changes throughout the movies. Even in the first 2 books, she starts out like every other capital person and then she is completely against the games. The look she gave katniss when she had to pick her name, the only name in the pot 😫😫😫 Also I was dying when you saw cinna and you were like wow I’m surprised he’s still alive and then he’s IMMEDIATELY killed 🤣 I love these videos!!!! 💕💕💕💕💕
