Watching **CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY** For The First Time! (Movie Reaction & Commentary) 

Burton was completely against using CGI if he could help it, and this is another example. All the squirrels you see? They're real. In fact, they're rescue squirrels that Burton specifically hired someone to train them to do all these scenes. He even named them. If you really want specifics, the real ones are whenever you get a close up of one, when they first attack Veruca's stunt double, and when that one squirrel pushes the dad in after her. Also, apparently this is supposed to be ironic. She exploited nut workers to get what she wanted in the beginning, tried to do the same thing here, and it backfired.

The bucket house is actually the reason the movie got the green light from Roald Dahl's widow. Why? It's based off of Dahl's famous writing shed. It's common knowledge that Dahl hated the original, so naturally she was protective of any future adaptations. But when she saw the house, and found out they'd designed the Bucket house like that on purpose? That sold the deal for her.

Say what you want about the oompa loompa flashback, but it's here for two very good reasons. 1. It shows Wonka wasn't making it up and did not in fact kidnap them like people assumed the original did. 2. Also, it shows he was there for another reason, and found them by chance.

Got to love how they show the realistic collateral damage something like a golden ticket hunt would cause on people like Charlie's dad.

Sad to see how despite how crushing it is to hear Charlie say they should give up the ticket for money, you can see they're already accepting it as the truth. They're so close to starving, and literally can't afford to think they can survive on chocolate alone.

Regardless if you find this Wonka off putting, this is actually more realistic considering he now has a back story. When you lock yourself away for 15 years, not to mention never getting closure on what happened between him and his dad, which made him bitter and misanthropic, this is actually close to what would come out of it.

According to people who suffer from flashbacks, this is actually a realistic depiction.

This whole scene with Wonka and his father is based off when Tim Burton visited his dying mom and found out she made a scrapbook of all his movie posters. And now I'm wondering if that in any way influenced his work on Big Fish

Cinematography note here: the further they get inside the factory, the colors drain away. Do with that what you will. It's not just Wonka that's getting washed out, the factory is too. He just made a huge technological invention, and there's no joy in it other than for advertising candy.

And yes, wonkas backstory got the thumbs up from Roald Dahl's widow. Also, Wonka has braces because it's a nod to something similar Tim Burton went through as a kid.

My favorite thing in the movie is how all the oompa loompa songs are made as different music genres. a small detail I think is often overlooked

Willy Wonka is really what would happen if you gave a kid unlimited money and said "come up with the most creative candies you can." Like everything he does and the way he acts is one kid one-upping every kid around him.

A version where everyone survives, and the parents are stuck with the results of their parenting style. Augustus: mom didn't stop him from overeating. Veruca: dad wound up in the garbage because of him spoiling her. Violet: blue because her mom pushed her to pit herself above the others. Mike: let technology be his son's only babysitter, and never stopped him.

Shows something you wouldn't think about: free advertising for life because the last ticket came from your candy store.

Say what you want about them playing the dementia trope for laughs, but according to people with family members who have dementia, they all learned to treasure every moment of clarity like it's the last one. Like Charlie's doing here.

That Twilight part 🤣 "He does not look alright." "How long have you been 17, Will Wonka?"

That's right, even after saying no, Charlie still hesitated. Yes, even though he wants away from his life of poverty, he still said no. He knows he's giving up the chance of a lifetime, and he really doesn't want to give it up. But he still does because he's so close with his family. Basically what I'm saying is because Wonka had no support system, he's now walking away empty handed.

Something else I never knew there was an explanation for: Violet's clothes don't rip because they're soaked with blueberry juice.

My best bet on why the factory was so grey on the outside was not to spoil the colorful and unique atmosphere inside. Classic trick in design.

“Are all these play by the same actor?” If your meaning about the Oompa Loompas in the film, that is a resounding yes. Every single Oompa Loompa is played by Deep Roy. Even his salary in the film was $1 million.

I love this version, and Johnny did an amazing job… for some reason this Wonka is oddly attractive lol

Naturally some things had to be updated to be relevant, and making Mike Teevee a genius because of technology was a brilliant way to do it. Also establishes he just did it because he could. You can see he got no real enjoyment out of it.

I never watched the original movie, but I grown up watching this one, people criticized it quite a lot but I think it's a very solid movie.

And yes, it's implied they made that puppet room just that day

Ooh, perfect timing on this reaction given Johnny Depp’s win two weeks ago! Anyway, I thought this was a pretty good reboot. It stays true to the book, but with a few changes from both the book and the 1971 film. This movie also came out around the time when Johnny Depp was coming off from the first Pirates film, which showed that he was a box office star back then. I can’t wait for the new Wonka film starring Timothée Chalamet in December 2023! The first footage was shown at Cinemacon (an event for theater owners that takes place in Las Vegas) during the Warner Bros. panel and reactions from people who were able to see the first look was really positive based on what I’ve read. As usual, keep up the great work with your videos Sophie. They never fail to make me happy after a long week. P.S. I hope you have a wonderful Father’s Day, tomorrow too! :)

While I'm still gushing here, let me talk to you about all the Oompa Loompas. You ready? They were all played by one guy, named Deep Roy. He went over every individual shot you see the Oompa Loompas in, so they could get this effect.

As a fan of Roald Dahl, this is my favourite version. I LOVE the set, and the characters(grandpa Joe is especially perfect) and the way they perfectly turned Dahl's Oompa Loompa songs exactly how I thought they would sound. Though it's charming, the only thing I think could've been improved is Depp's Willy Wonka(this is the only person I prefer from the 1971 film). All round my favourite Roald Dahl film adaptation

Fact: the production of this movie were shot in pinewood studios in London where Tim Burton's Batman (1989) took place.

FYI this is NOT a remake but a faithful adaptation of the original book.

Got to give it up for who ever was in charge of casting. It's like this Augustus leaped right off the pages of the book. Some fun facts about the guy that played him: he's actually wearing a fat suit, actually does speak German, and didn't speak a word of English when he was cast. Also, come on. You mean to tell me biting the ticket hasn't happened more than once? The fact that it's Augustus it happened to just adds to the character.

They literally could've gone in any direction with Violet. She's literally just described as being beastly, and having bad manners. Tim Burton just took that and ran with it.

The toothpaste is called Smilex. It's a direct reference to Tim Burton's Batman, which is what Joker called his brand of poison.

This opening sequence here is not meant to be realistic, it's supposed show how a kid would imagine a chocolate factory to look like.

Also if you ever saw the TV show "The Good Doctor" The main character playing DR. Shaun Murphy is the same actor that played Charlie here.

More commentary on automation. Yes, it means some jobs disappear, but it also means a need for new ones, like keeping the machines going. Edit: okay, am I the only one seeing a parallel for what happened with Wonka, regarding this?

Only movie to do this. Denying the Bucket family. And given what we've seen of Wonka's past, we understand why he does it. We don't approve, but we get it. Walked out on his dad at a very young age, and every adult he's come into contact with since has let him down or tried to take advantage of him. What reason does he have to think the Buckets are different? All it takes is that one moment to see Wonka's entire worldview shatter. He let the world make him bitter. He knew how bad people could be, but it also tainted his opinion of all other people in the world as well.

The Gobstoppers are there to show that Wonka does actually have compassion, he just shows it the only way he knows how. Through his candy. And you also know this is made with compassion in mind, because it doesn't make any business sense.

Personally, I never believed Johnny Depp was guilty because in France, where I live, Vanessa Paradis, his ex, is very famous and everyone would have known if he had ruffled one of her hair. Also, you should know that Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are Tim Burton's favorite actors and he often make reference of his owns movies. Fun fact : I learnt in another réaction that the moment where Willy Wonka bumps into the elevator door the first time was in fact, an accident because Johnny Depp didn't know the door was close

I honestly think Veruca and Violet were the worst, but other than that the kids were tolerable. Just don't feed Mike's ego, and as for Augustus... I mean, he's greedy for food but that's kinda it, he's really not so bad at all, just put the kid on a diet lmao Also I thought it was great that even at the end of the movie they took the house and put it in the factory. They really do just love it that much, it's more home than any giant factory room and that's something neat to think about. Personally I've always loved small, old and sometimes even cheap and dingy looking places like that. I've always loved the cheaper gas station convenience stores for this reason. I'd hate to live in a place like that, especially because of the bugs you'd likely get, but as a hangout or a shop it's pretty nice in my opinion.

I recommended this movie to you once, thank you!💕 What's funny is that when I first watched it years ago, I didn't like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at all. It's probably some that disturbed me a little at the time, like the chocolate madness of Angustus, or the transformation of Violet. And yet, last year I gave him a chance, and I haven't regretted it. The sets and the visuals are beautiful, the serious scenes work very well, and Charlie's family and Charlie himself are extremely endearing about the way they act through their situation. And of course Johnny Depp does a masterful job of capturing Willy Wonka's personality, making him both funny and quirky, making him my favorite character in the movie. ❤️❤️❤️ Well if I had to detect flaws, it would be that the film lacks a bit of development and logic. Like, do the kids who lost like Violet and the gamer kid come back to normal afterwards? Because I would be worried about the guy (well, he certainly looked for it, but still, it looks like a sheet of paper). And how did Willy Wonka's dad move his house like this after his son was gone for a short time? And how does Willy know his new address?🤔 Its few inconsistencies tickle my mind every time I watch the film... But that doesn't spoil the viewing either. With such good actors, sets to die for, it's just hard not to fall in love with this film (and once again, we have Johnny Depp!)🤩

If you thought this Veruca was insufferable, see the original Willy Wonka movie. That one makes this Veruca look like Charlie 😂

I can remember seeing a trailer on TV for this movie when I was a kid, and me, my mom, and my sister went to a store to buy a VHS copy of the film and put in the VCR to watch and I didn't like it. I thought it was really depressing and dark and like everyone else immediately thought it was a remake.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: This film blows the so-called "original" (which basically doesn't rsemble the book at all) out of the water. One of the few examples of a book adaptation film that hit just about all the right notes; the only really new bit was Wonka's apparent "daddy issues" and that was a tad awkward, but at least it explains his apparent problem with family matters. Arguably the best change, though, was the Oompa Loompas. The ones in the Gene Wilder film look like somebody's personal sleep paralysis demon come to life, and their songs are not only boring and lifeless but don't resemble those of the book in any way. They actually look good and somewhat believable here, and the musical numbers in this film are not only hugely faithful to the book but each given an awesome spin of their own (easily my favorite being the one for Mike). Also yes, the Oompa Loompas are all played by the same person - and he went out of his way to do every single bit. Absolute legend.
