I just watched this movie the other day and so started watching YT reactions of it. And so far I've found that just about every guy (8/9 I've seen) reacts the same way - saying that her coming is ruining "the guy trip" and blames her the whole time for her being there. And every single girl sides with her - that she is in pain and doesn't want/need to be alone and is just asking for comfort from her supposed boyfriend thus wanting to accompany him on said trip and just be with him. It's been a fascinating POV find for sure.

The sister killed herself and her parents by attaching a hose to the car engine, and dragging it into the house, and went further by taping an extra hose to her face. There is a theory that the cult did this, since you see flowers around Dani's picture, and the sister looks shellshocked and terrified, and the tape can either imply determination on her behalf, or force. As much as I hate Christian, he didn't deserve his faith. He was raped, and murdered. He was a bad boyfriend and friend, but he didn't deserve what he got. I think the final line of the screenplay sums the film up perfectly: "A SMILE finally breaks onto Dani’s face. She has surrendered to a joy known only by the insane. She has lost herself completely, and she is finally free. It is horrible and it is beautiful."

Apparently the Director, Ari Aster, was going through a break up himself when he originally wrote this movie. He also mentioned how they did go to Sweden and studied the architecture and traditional clothing the people wore here. The person who designed the traditional outfits said that every outfit was hand made and all were different. She said the hardest thing to create though was that flower dress Dani wore at the end of the movie and it was very heavy. The actress legit had a hard time walking in it. While I'll never see this move due to having a very weak stomach, I do like all the hard work the production team did to make this movie as authentic as possible.

The disconnect with thinking they are both toxic when Christian and everyone around Dani is gaslighting her into believing that her genuine concern for her sister's actions was actually mind boggling and really misses the whole point of the movie. It's kinda funny how you missed the message Dani got from her sister in the beginning. Her sister was bipolar and she sent a message saying "I see black, I'm going home and mom and dad are coming too" that's why you see the pipe on the girls mouth, she also put it in the parents room. i actually love this movie a lot! christian is an awful boyfriend, manipulating her when she's vulnerable. i know he didn't want to break up with her right when that awful family tragedy hit, but it would've been kinder. he has zero empathy for her throughout the movie, and that helps drive her towards the only people offering empathy- which just so happens to be the cult. notice how christian said "a real attestupa?" he knew what it was, and didn't warn her after knowing her sister committed suicide as well. everyone else is also at fault there, but... he's her boyfriend, he's supposed to care about her mental state. anyone with a shred of compassion should've warned her, but it's a horror movie, so we don't get that. the first time i watched this movie, i had to sit and think about it for like an hour afterwards, it's very intense.

Lol your reaction was everything 😭😭😭😂😂😂😂… this movie is a hell of a psychological ride … the way I look at it is the girl Danny, I think her name is was already broken when she got there. Cults pray on people who are emotionally compromised, people with no family, people who have experienced trauma, and people who are out cast who are longing to be excepted. For Danny she was emotionally drained from trying to keep her dying relationship alive. She hated feeling like she was a burden. Then her sister kills her self and her parents so she’s literally morning over 3 people as well as the state of her relationship because deep down she knows that her boyfriend is only staying with her because her family died. So when the guy invited his friends he knew that Danny’s bf would likely invite her out of guilt. I believe getting Danny to join after her parents died was the icing on the cake to the original goal. The cult doesn’t kill everyone that goes there. I think there main goal is actually to bring in new blood for procreation as well is getting others to join them again for procreation and to replace the people they sacrifice. If you notice they only killed the people who disrespect there cultural beliefs. Like the first group that freaked out during the suicide sene. They didn’t hear them out and immediately wanted to leave. The maze runner guy peed on the ancestral tree of ashes he was killed next. Then the black guy because he went through the book after being told not to. And finally Danny’s boyfriend. As the may queen she was given the deciding power to choose weather or not she wanted to sacrifice her boyfriend. That’s why he was ultimately killed. It was the ultimate break up. When she starts crying and then stops and smiles that was the point she officially cracked and excepted everything that has happened because she had found her new home and family. The reason why is because when she’s in pain she doesn’t have to bear it alone ( pun fully intended lol) . Whenever she’s in pain or others are in pain the people mimic it and help carry the load so that the emotional toll isn’t so heavy

I love this movie. I can't stand the horror genre, but as someone raised in a cult, I find cult stories somehow really satisfying and therapeutic. Seeing/hearing other people condemn the crap I was raised in is validating. I did watch a detailed breakdown of the cult elements and meaning of this movie before seeing the movie itself, which definitely affected my experience watching it.

24:00 Well i guess billy has never been too therapy before... Its called shadowing. You mimic the emotional response. Its showing the person they aren't experiencing the emotions alone. Thats been a theme of this whole movie. Danny is alone. She has no one. Even her own boyfriend doesnt care when her sister murders her parents & commits suicide. She stumbled into the perfect cult of family that accepts loners. That prays on their lack of having a foundation in life.

Making it seem like she can express herself with them and that only they can understand her - which wouldn't be too hard since her friends barely even notice she's there and have no regard for her feelings whatsoever. That's how cults work, breaking down the individualism and making them feel like they're have no where else to go. I suppose if you'll ask them they'll say they were giving comfort to their May Queen.

Lol what? How is this a thriller? A slow, methodical film about a girl whose family just died being manipulated into joining a cult as the cult kills everyone she knows is thrilling? Horror films don't need demons, or serial killing thrashers, or jump scares galore to be considered horror.

At the beginning, we see the firemen turn off the cars in the garage and we see two pipes going from the exhaust through the house, one into the parents' room, one into the sister's mouth. It was carbon monoxide poisoning for all three, silent, and I dare say the sister used some of her meds to render the parents unconscious too. Christian is not a good fit for her. He cannot handle high needs people, a lot of people can't, which she was before the deaths of her family and he should have broken it off long before that happened. After that, he was trapped because he was scared she would top herself so on that front, you have *some* sympathy for him. He wasn't a completely terrible person (like Mark), just not a good fit for her and he is an ass but not an assh*le. I feel bad for him being drugged and raped though, that's wrong in every way. If you want a really good movie, I really recommend The VVitch again, Honestly, the best "horror" movie I have watched in years. Just be ready for Puritan English accents and dialect from the 1600s if you do. #BillyBinges

Okay, so the thing about this movie is that some people see Dani as the 'bad' person or Christian as the 'bad' person - when neither of them are good or bad. Something that gets very obvious immediatly, is how the relationship between the two is practically already over, but neither of them acknowledge it, even before the tragedy. The way Dani copes with things is by clinging to the only person she has left - Christian. And Christian, who very clearly didn't still want to be with her, is too scared to cut the ties after the whole tragedy happens. The way hE reacts to Dani, is by avoiding. He's very clearly overwhelmed. Now, let's imagine, what would happen if he was really a good boyfriend, caring, loving, etc. It wouldn't help her situation a lot. Sure, it probably would have helped a bit, but the way she reacts and the traume she has experienced- that's not something a good boyfriend can help her with. What she needs, is actual therapy. He can't be her therapist, he's 'just' her boyfriend. Also - he might have been a bad boyfriend, but that doesn't mean, he was a bad person. When it comes to all these friends, we're only shown the bad moments of their personality, to make the difference between the cult and Danis' friends more noticable. But Christian probably wasn't a bad person - just someone who isn't confident enough to actually understand what he wants and act on it. (In my opinion, even if he was a bad person he would never deserve that, but some people might argue with that) Another thing that I see mentioned quite often, is Christian being druged and r*ped. He was, btw, there's definitely no use arguing that, but what some people seem to think, that he 'sort of' agreed, since he kept looking at her, and when he was asked if he would like to mate with the other girl - since his answer wasn't shown - people seem to think he said yes, and that apparently means, he wasn't assaulted. He was. He was drugged to the point of not being able to give consent anymore - consent is something, anyone should be able to revoke at any time and that clearly didn't happen. Also, I don't think they would have drugged him, if he had said yes, he wanted to mate with her - but that's just my own interpretation.

I like these kinds of movies because they are challenging. There's nothing wrong with simple, audience friendly movies but that's not enough for me. For example, you mentioned you didn't understand what was going on in the beginning. There are two running vehicles in an enclosed garage, there are firefighters there, the engines were running, there are hoses attached and leading inside the house, there are dead bodies inside the house, and Dani's sister had sent a message that sounded suicidal. Unless you've never heard of people killing themselves with vehicle exhaust before, it's a simple puzzle to put together. But it makes for a more interesting way to deliver that information to the audience. The simpler but more boring way is to have a scene where someone calls Dani and tells her "Your sister killed your parents then killed herself by running their cars' exhaust into the house while they slept".
